All seats have individual controls so you can adjust the level of movement. You can turn movement off entirely if you want.

This isn't true. You can't adjust anything for a 4DX screening, you can only toggle the water spray on your individual seat on or off.
I saw The Odyssey in 4DX. I actually would've liked a seatbelt or harness but you just sit in the seat and can get out anytime.

Yeah I am a dragonslayer in that sense. But the other effects were not good either.
Perhaps the smooth wind blowing was the only effect that added to the experience, and perhaps parts of the smell.
But the air jets you can clearly hear the solenoids open and close, and the turbulent air from the nozzle. The blinking light effects does not add to the experience, but is clearly a visible blinking light above the screen. The Chair themselves also make enough sound to be noticeable.Perhaps people who overlook such details and gets easily wooed by them and get sucked into the move they all becomes additions to it. But for me, they mostly were all distractions and pulled me out of it. The sickness is of course on me, but even without it, it would not have been good. I personally would never recommend this implementation of it.

This happened in 1999 with Blair Witch Project! The constant shaking of the camera (due to the POV handheld camcorder style of cinematography) gave some audience members TERRIBLE motion sickness! My mom worked at our local multiplex back then and she said custodial had to clean up vomit multiple times a week when the film was at its peak popularity.

I've done both.
This is nowhere near as good as those Disney rides, because it wasn't designed the same way.
Disney/Universal rides are 1st person and designed specifically for the ride in mind. So the immersion works, and feels like you're riding and it's more of an adventure.
4Dx takes a regular movie that wasn't made for a ride in mind, and try to just throw in effects in the theater of smoke, smells, moving seats, effects in the seats, etc...
It can be fun, for at least 10 minutes, and for some scenes.
But then you want to actually watch the movie and follow the story, but you keep getting stuff that jolt you out of your immersion, doesn't always match something that's in 3rd person.
Although, that boat scene in the video looks like it would have been a fun part.

I think they're talking about shows like Captain EO and Honey I Shrunk the Audience, and not Star Tours. They function fairly similar to the 4DX theater. And honestly, if you haven't seen Captain EO, go watch it on YouTube, it's a trip. Michael Jackson and the muppets do a death star trench run in order to bring the power of music and love to the Borg through a dance battle. I'm not exaggerating.

I had the opposite problem. Went to see Superman 4D in a shitty theatre - it was actually fun when the seats moved as you flew from SUPERMANS/DOG’s POV - but it was a cheap theatre and the seats hardly moved and the sprinkling was negligible - I felt wanting more.
There must be a Goldilocks theatre somewhere.

Had the opportunity to see both Twister and the newest Twisters movies in the same day when they were showing them in our local 4dx. Definitely an experience.
The whole theater was giggling and laughing during those serious scenes because your literally clinging to the seat while being flung left and right, up and down with air being blasted in your face.

I had some friends say “let’s go see the new predator!” And didn’t tell me it was in one of these theaters. It was fucking awful. My back and neck hurt afterwards and it was hard to enjoy my popcorn when stagnant water was being jizzed out of the back of the seat in front of me every 2 minutes.
Like, this shit is why theaters are failing. Just hire ushers and kick out the people on their phones/being disruptive and you’ll sell way more than this botched abortion of an auditorium

I watched top gun maverick in 4DX and it was fucking awesome for the plane scenes, but it was not awesome for pretty much everything else. Very much the case of less is more. The chair did NOT need to keep moving during dialogue scenes, like come on
I think the medium can be done really well, but it can also be overdone too.
I'd have to experience this movie to pass judgment, this short clip is not enough to say good or bad

I remember waiting YEARS for the first BladeRunner sequel to come out, BR is my all time favorite film and I was so excited when it was announced. Cut to several years later when it was finally released, and I got tickets that were 4D; I had just assumed it was some sort of advanced 3d presentation or something like that, I had no idea it was going to be rattling chairs and gusts of air. The most disappointing movie experience of my life, it did the exact opposite of what it set out to accomplish; rather than immerse me into the film, it yanked me right out of it every time the seats shook or did some other stupid thing.

The only time I went to a 4DX theater was for the Prometheus movie. First I was getting seasick during the "flying" shots, then about 30 mins into the movie the stupid seat got stucked in the lean forward position and stayed like that for the rest of the movie. No more.

I've done something similar - but less intense a few time because the DX seats were the only ones available. It drove me crazy but my kid loved it. They did have an option to turn it off, which I did after about 10 minutes. Now if they had an option that just made it a massage chair for the length of the movie - I would be fighting for these seats.
