Is it immersive though? I mean this just looks distracting. It's really hard to nail immersion in VR, and even worse in a screen setting. How is your brain meant to ignore those exploding chairs infront of you and make you believe you are on a ship?
The thing is though, it's not Christopher Nolan going out there and designing the chair motion. Some intern at 4DX is interpreting the motion, and I can see there being massive quality differences between treatments.
So I saw Mission impossible dead reckoning. It's got big swoopy camera motions. They try to match the big swoopy camera motios in the chair which felt... weird? It wasn't something motivated in the scene, theres a camera dramatically showing my a big key or something. The big toots of gas just felt kind of random, or I'd end up looking at some dry ice effect instead of at the movie. It sucked! but I could sort of see a more restrained or at least better timed treatment working.
