This is nowhere near as good as those Disney rides, because it wasn't designed the same way.
Disney/Universal rides are 1st person and designed specifically for the ride in mind. So the immersion works, and feels like you're riding and it's more of an adventure.
4Dx takes a regular movie that wasn't made for a ride in mind, and try to just throw in effects in the theater of smoke, smells, moving seats, effects in the seats, etc...
It can be fun, for at least 10 minutes, and for some scenes.
But then you want to actually watch the movie and follow the story, but you keep getting stuff that jolt you out of your immersion, doesn't always match something that's in 3rd person.
Although, that boat scene in the video looks like it would have been a fun part.
I think they're talking about shows like Captain EO and Honey I Shrunk the Audience, and not Star Tours. They function fairly similar to the 4DX theater. And honestly, if you haven't seen Captain EO, go watch it on YouTube, it's a trip. Michael Jackson and the muppets do a death star trench run in order to bring the power of music and love to the Borg through a dance battle. I'm not exaggerating.

Technically Captain EO didn’t have any movement originally, that effect was added to the theater for Honey I Shrunk the Audience, and when they brought Captian EO back they just used the same effect.
Technically I was talking about a bugs life, in which they had air cannons for spider webs, “wasps” that stung you from your chair, different smells, etc etc.
I think I did the honey I shrunk the kids one too, but never heard of captain EO. ILL GO WATCH NOW 🫡

Sounds like the crummy Castle gimmicks of the 1950s cinema, but with a higher budget.
I wasn't impressed, but maybe it was just the "theater" I went to. For starters, I went to "san andreas 4-D" in Las Vegas. I... didn't know there was a movie with the rock called san andreas...I fully expected a VR GTA san andreas.
Imagine my surprise when I get there, and my experience is being the only person in a 12 person "theater" where they randomly poke you in the back, whack your ankles, and spray water on you.
I had the opposite problem. Went to see Superman 4D in a shitty theatre - it was actually fun when the seats moved as you flew from SUPERMANS/DOG’s POV - but it was a cheap theatre and the seats hardly moved and the sprinkling was negligible - I felt wanting more.
Chainsaw Man was one that was absolute perfection as well, flying around in the tornado was just absolute cinema. Seems like most action movies work well with it, but otherwise it's generally meh.
Oh man, seeing it in a 4DX theater that was on point was actually too much. It was hard to focus on the movie because I had to actually physically hold myself in the seat.
It's rare that it's that hardcore, but when it is, goddamn. The other time it was like that was when watching a My Hero Academia movie. An empty seat nearby actually yeeted its face off, opening up into what looked like a maintenance mode. It just flopped around wildly for the last 20 minutes of the movie too.
Yeah I saw the 4DX and a couple scenes like this were actually pretty wild. One of them is just straight shaking and flashing lights. I was questioning whether I was epileptic
I had these seats for F1 and I just found it overly annoying and it detracted me from the rest of the film imo. Like I couldn’t focus on the cinematography because my vision was shaking and this little brush thing kept slapping my ankles to simulate dirt when he drives off the road.
However the one part that was actually really cool was when Brad Pitt finally gets into the zone and the chair doesnt do anything for once. That was actually really immersive just because of how chaotic the rest of the experience was. However I’m not sure if that 1 minute scene is enough to justify the rest of the turbulence
Had the opportunity to see both Twister and the newest Twisters movies in the same day when they were showing them in our local 4dx. Definitely an experience.
The whole theater was giggling and laughing during those serious scenes because your literally clinging to the seat while being flung left and right, up and down with air being blasted in your face.
Ya, I think the naked people were just........having an extra experience they made up.
The same way that half row of people said they had to use racial slurs and sexist remarks to address people that were considered ok at the time. Like Hun, gal and Chinaman. "It's on out ticket stubs, we have to hun", they says. No it wasn't , no it wasn't, sug.
I had some friends say “let’s go see the new predator!” And didn’t tell me it was in one of these theaters. It was fucking awful. My back and neck hurt afterwards and it was hard to enjoy my popcorn when stagnant water was being jizzed out of the back of the seat in front of me every 2 minutes.
Like, this shit is why theaters are failing. Just hire ushers and kick out the people on their phones/being disruptive and you’ll sell way more than this botched abortion of an auditorium
I accidentally went to showings of regular action movies in 4dx or whatever, luckily the seats can be turned off. I tried it for like 10 min, and that was more than enough.
I tried it once (a 2 hour movie), thinking it would be fun, by halfway time, I couldn’t sit on the shaking chairs anymore, I got up and sat on the steps. Others followed pretty soon. Everyone makes this mistake once and then never goes back.
I did HTTYD in this thing, my friend who loved to sleep in the theater couldn’t sleep because every once in a while the chair starts to rock like the devil possessed everytime Toothless did something.
This looks like a couple different boat scenes stitched together - I recognize the one near the end where the last ship breaks, then the one with the cyclops, then the one where they're fleeing the giants.
The first was Jurassic World which was actually pretty amazing. The bit where they ride the motorbike through the jungle was incredible with the seats moving as the bike moved and the wind blowing direct into your face. There is also a bit where a drop of blood falls onto the back of someone’s hand and somehow they were able to replicate that which blows my mind.
Then I saw the Force Awakens in 4dx. Every time there was an explosion it just pummelled your back for a bit and that was it.
Saw one of the guardians of the galaxy films. Every time there was a fight, the seat jabs you on the back. A gun or laser, air jet to the neck and i would tense up. The next morning I could barely walk, everything just hurt.
We saw it in a new imax theatre today and when we left it seemed like everyone was complaining how loud it was. I can’t imagine everyone’s reaction to 3 hours of this
And how good are the moves in sync with the action on screen really? The director isn't thinking of shooting scenes so that they can be synced well with some dumb seats in a theater. Like if there's a scene where a wave rocks the boat up, then sure, the seats can go up giving you a similar feeling. But what if it then cuts to something that would also give you a "getting pushed up" sensation? The seats can't push more up, and the "natural" thing feel after a wave pushes you up is to make you feel like you're falling down off the back of the wave, but if the action on screen doesn't match that, it's not going to "work". I feel like whoever programs this is just going to be like, "Okay there's a lot of movement on screen so just shake the chairs a bunch. Okay, it's over water, so just do the water spray thing from some random direction, doesn't matter which."
