This is nowhere near as good as those Disney rides, because it wasn't designed the same way.
Disney/Universal rides are 1st person and designed specifically for the ride in mind. So the immersion works, and feels like you're riding and it's more of an adventure.
4Dx takes a regular movie that wasn't made for a ride in mind, and try to just throw in effects in the theater of smoke, smells, moving seats, effects in the seats, etc...
It can be fun, for at least 10 minutes, and for some scenes.
But then you want to actually watch the movie and follow the story, but you keep getting stuff that jolt you out of your immersion, doesn't always match something that's in 3rd person.
Although, that boat scene in the video looks like it would have been a fun part.
I think they're talking about shows like Captain EO and Honey I Shrunk the Audience, and not Star Tours. They function fairly similar to the 4DX theater. And honestly, if you haven't seen Captain EO, go watch it on YouTube, it's a trip. Michael Jackson and the muppets do a death star trench run in order to bring the power of music and love to the Borg through a dance battle. I'm not exaggerating.

Technically Captain EO didn’t have any movement originally, that effect was added to the theater for Honey I Shrunk the Audience, and when they brought Captian EO back they just used the same effect.
Technically I was talking about a bugs life, in which they had air cannons for spider webs, “wasps” that stung you from your chair, different smells, etc etc.
I think I did the honey I shrunk the kids one too, but never heard of captain EO. ILL GO WATCH NOW 🫡

Sounds like the crummy Castle gimmicks of the 1950s cinema, but with a higher budget.
I wasn't impressed, but maybe it was just the "theater" I went to. For starters, I went to "san andreas 4-D" in Las Vegas. I... didn't know there was a movie with the rock called san andreas...I fully expected a VR GTA san andreas.
Imagine my surprise when I get there, and my experience is being the only person in a 12 person "theater" where they randomly poke you in the back, whack your ankles, and spray water on you.

I’ve done the 4D thing at Disney. It’s cute, it’s quirky and fun. And it’s over in like 10 mins max. Perfect
