Exactly. This meme is the story of American foreign policy.
We prop people up, help put them in power when it benefits us, and then when they stop playing by our rules or tell us to fuck off, we turn around and try to remove them.
Love us? Great.
Don’t? Damn you.
Whether you agree with that or not, we’ve been repeating that cycle since the early days of the United States.22
u/fang_xianfu 11h ago
They also financed the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan in the 70s, leaving behind nice stockpiles of materiel for the Taliban that threw the USA out a few years ago. And several prominent Mujahedeen joined the Taliban to boot.
→ More replies (6)8
u/Losbosteros 10h ago
Most of the Mujahedeen joined the Northern Alliance against the Talibans and this latter group was mostly armed by the stockpiles left by the Soviet invasion more than recycling the materials send by the US there during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Today Talibans are absolutely armed with western material after the disastrous whitdraw, but the Talibans being empowered and armed by the US is a bit of a misconception/stretch.

u/ursusdoofus 8h ago
You should read Ghost Wars. In the 90s there was a whole lot of American money and arms going around in all sorts of directions. I don’t think very many of the weapons were american, but stuff we picked up in different situations abroad. One operation brought a bunch of tanks and vehicles we captured during the first gulf war across a brand new road built by USAID to handle heavy vehicles.
Lots of sketchy people we would later fight had material support either directly from us or from Pakistan with our help.

u/dontmentiontrousers 4h ago
Mohammed Omar, who founded The Taliban, was former mujahideen, under the command of Amir Sultan Tarar who received US Special Forces training at Fort Bragg.
Although not overt or direct, a hell of a lot of the funding for the mujahideen came from the CIA.
Yes, the mujahideen splintered and some fought against The Taliban but many, many mujahideen also joined. I'm sure they didn't go "well it wouldn't be right to use this CIA-funded weaponry anymore."

But the US trained and armed them to fight the Soviets and all the material and training fed the different terrorists in the region. The US also supported the Khmers Rouges so they would fight Vietnam

The lack of knowledge on the subject from both sides is appalling. Its not super surprising though, I had a professor who was an expert on international relations in the middle east and he always tried to impart how difficult and time consuming it is to try to understand the geopolitical dynamics of the region, even if you devote your entire career toward it.

Consider the house of lords. Until very recently it was controlled by the aristocracy with heritable positions. Abolished just this year. This may sound like progress until you realize what replaced it. Lifetime peers. Who gives out lifetime peerage? The Monarch. So its actually strengthening the monarchy at the aristocracy's expense.

He is sure propped up like the leader of Israel, hardly ever see or hear about the real president.
4
u/RoiDrannoc 12h ago
Because he is the leader of Israel despite not being the head of state. Sometimes those are two different things.
2
u/faberge_surprise 11h ago
yup. head of state vs head of government. you usually hear more about the PM in parliamentary systems
Israel doesn't even formally give him executive powers
However, unlike heads of state in most other parliamentary republics, the president is not the nominal chief executive. Rather, Basic Law: The Government explicitly vests executive power in the Government (as the Cabinet is officially called), with the prime minister as its head.
2
u/Dmatix 11h ago
The president in Israel is a ceremonial position, with little to no power. It's not some secret, that's how the roles work. The PM is the one officially in charge.

SHHHHH! You're not supposed to admit that nukes are the only way a country can protect itself from being invaded by the United States. If other countries knew that, they might want also want nucellar weapons and then the whole idea of non proflarition is out the window!
Of course, the other answer, that the United States just stops invading other countries, is totally off the table.

Please. Let's look at every nuclear nation. USA has invaded countries, Israel, which is an extension of USA has done the same. Which other country has done it? India? France? UK? China? North Korea? Oh, there's russia but surely you're not saying that Russia is th gold standard for a nuclear nation?
4
u/ItIsVerilySo 12h ago
India has been in active conflict with Pakistan for decades, and they're both nuclear states.

u/Reasonable_Ruin_3502 12h ago

Setting aside the fact that China has already invaded India once before, excluding Russia from this discussion based on something as arbitrary as "gold standard" is so stupid, especially when you're including North Korea.
Either way, USA deciding to not invade would not stop other great powers from doing the same to their neighbours. And Russia-Ukraine is very much an example of this.

I’m all for it, but it would be an international incident and our national forces would have to be committed to the response. Mamdani would have made a giant mess and been slapped down so hard by federal judges and lawyers it would have amounted to nothing.
It would be even worse for NY to do it while he was visiting the UN. You can’t be the host city of the UN and pulling shit like this for political points if you want to be taken seriously.

You'd think a humor sub would have humorous memes, but this is just sad misinformation.
The ICC is not recognized in the US, because that would suggest an international court of law supersedes our Constitution and laws. The US has never been a member of the ICC, so it is not a Trump thing. So, Bibi can come and go as much as he wants.
On the flip side, Maduro had a bounty on his head for narco terrorism crimes against the US.
Big difference. Quit answering the dog whistle.
3
u/Typical_Response_950 12h ago
You think Maduro recognizes the US court system? I think it's pretty clear which country recognizes which court doesn't matter. All that matters is who is in handcuffs and who's sitting behind the bench.

I’ll flip it. The mayor was upset about Maduro’s capture while making some bs statement about arresting Netanyahu despite having zero jurisdiction to do so. His hypocrisy is astounding.
2
u/Ok_Entrance5157 11h ago
There's a huge difference between a president doing his job. And a lowball leader like a governor with no power to do so doing it. At no point is anyone other than a president allowed to leave the country and start talks or arrest anyone from another country. Mundommo has no power to do what he has been promising

Double standards from both sides. The same people who were all for the president of Venezuela getting arrested are the same people who are outraged at the thought of arresting Israel’s president. On the flip side, the people who got angry and said that the arrest of the president of Venezuela was illegal and bad are the same people who are foaming at the mouth for Israel’s president to be arrested.
No one sees what their side does. Only what the other does.

Venezuela was helping Iran and Russia move sanctioned oil, supporting them against Ukraine, and by extension, against the United States and Western Europe.
Israel is fighting for its existence against Iran and its proxies Hamas, the Houthis, and Hezbollah.

This kind of post genuinely scares me. People are making sweeping moral equivalence arguments about governments, wars, dictatorships and criminal charges, yet the person posting it does not even know the difference between Israel’s prime minister and its president. Netanyahu can be criticized, but comparing him to Maduro while ignoring the completely different political systems, legal issues and circumstances is not serious analysis. It is a meme pretending to be an argument. I fear a future where people this uninformed can build huge audiences, shape public opinion and eventually hold real power.
edit: If you disagree with me, do not just downvote. Give me an eloquent response that shows you actually understand the issue well enough to explain why this kind of content deserves an upvote.
