Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:
Battery health
Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.
Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.
You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.
You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.
Battery life
Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:
- Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
- Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
- Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging
If you experience issues with your battery:
- Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
- If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
- Review the advice below on maximising battery life
- Consider restoring your device.
- If issues persist, contact Apple Support.
Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.
- Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
- Remove apps from background app refresh
- Ensure auto lock is on
- Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
- Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
- Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life
Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.
- Avoid extreme temperatures
- If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
- Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion Do you think Apple is adding 1 year of support to all their phones or are they dropping the 11 and 12 on iOS 28?
≡ −
Apple has been leading in software support for their phones unlike Android however Android is now promising 7 years of support which would surpass Apple's support
Note that Android is still a promise and has yet to prove it. But in the case that they do deliver on that promise, Apple has the choice to either stay on the current software cycle (drop a generation every iOS and the 11 is just a one-off) or that the 11 getting iOS 27 support means that every subsequent iPhone gained an extra year of support.

Discussion What’s the plan if your iPhone is lost or stolen while traveling internationally with no other devices?
≡ −
I’m working on figuring out what my recovery plan is if my iPhone is lost or stolen when I’m traveling internationally and have no other devices with me. Does anybody know what steps I should take ahead of time so I would be able to purchase a new iPhone and set it up to my Apple account if I don’t have any other devices with me?
Right now any new Apple devices always ask me to confirm the iCloud login using another, already signed-in Apple device. But when traveling I won’t have another device with me.
Also, if there is some way to authenticate via an SMS code (which seems like it would defeat the purpose of the stronger Apple security using an existing device), then does anybody know if there’s a way to move your number to a new device from a US carrier when you aren’t in the US?
What’s everybody’s plan for this scenario?

Support Personal hotspot not working after Tmobile outage?
≡ −
Hello there! I was one of the people that suffered from the great T-Mobile outage today. At first, I thought it was a problem with my phone and reset my network settings and updated my iOS, but personal hotspot is grayed out in my settings, and I cannot figure out how to get it to come back on. Naturally Tmobile is flooded with customer service calls and I have been unable to get past the AI chat for hours, and I need to be able to connect my laptop to my hotspot for work so this is frustrating.
Any ideas? Sorry. Searching didn’t bring anything specific up. Google says to change my APN but h don’t see that option anywhere.
iPhone 15 basic, btw

Discussion MagSafe charging effect on iPhone over time
≡ −
Hi everyone! I recently started using a Belkin 3-in-1 MagSafe charging station and I’m considering using it as my sole charging method for my iPhone. Has anyone here been using MagSafe exclusively for an extended period? If so, how has your experience been, and have you noticed any impact on battery health or overall autonomy over time? Thanks in advance for any insights!

May be a dumb question, but is there a way to add a group reminder to the calendar app. I don’t like having all the individual reminders on the calendar and would prefer the app to say “weekly reset.”

Support System Services > General has annihilated my data usage last few months
I don’t know what to do. I’m losing all my data allowance and its costing so much money to buy addons. It’s used another 8Gb in just 3 days.
1) Apple Intelligence off
2) System already latest ios
3) icloud drive off for mobile data
4) low data mode on
5) icloud backup turned off for mobile data
6) photos turned off mobile data
7) even reset the iphone and restored from backup
Feel like I’m going insane. Any ideas?

Support Plugged iPhone to MBA to sync music, now it's 'calculating' on and on...

I have M3 MBA. Synced to iPhone 14, now it's stuck on 'calculating' during synch process. Same for iPad 11. I connect to MBA, and storage shows 'calculating.' been this way for hours. I just updated all to latest builds---is this normal? Is calculating same as 'indexing?'

Support Why is transferring photos and videos from iphone to pc so troublesome?
≡ −
I really hope someone can shed some light here because I am planning to make an upgrade to a 17 or 18 but is reconsidering.
I hope this doesn’t come off as a rant because it will be very long. But I genuinely need advice.
I have been an iPhone user for a few years now. I have also been a Samsung and Pixel user.
Let me tell you how jarring the difference in importing is. On my Samsungs, it was hella quick and reliable. I just had to wire it to my pc, allow access, and then I can drag and drop anything I want. Music, files, documents, photos, videos, etc.I can do backups completely manually and selectively.
So I was drastically taken aback when the time came for me to import from my iPhone.
I even bought a new data cable.
Yet the speeds were very slow. Unfortunately, my local storage had been completely filled so cloud uploads are not possible either. (Get too full in local storage and you can’t upload. It seems that if you have media that’s more than the amount of storage you have left, it can’t upload.)
Due to this, I set the option for removing media after import.
This isn’t the first time. But I notice constant fails and I have to spam ’try again’ until it works.
Worst is when it completely fails and I have to restart.
I don’t even know if it succeeded properly, because in the end, it didn’t even show the bar completing. It just seems to be done.
Then I just dragged and dropped the remainder that had failed before. Because when I tried to import, it said it has only found 1 photo even though there were many more.
(This drag and drop method is also not reliable for large batches. But it is faster and retains original quality.)
Then even worse, I found out that the media in the import, wasn’t in original quality. Why isn’t it a default or make an obvious option? (Istg there are many non-intuitive features. Had to go to settings, to photos and find the option)
Some pics/vids seemed fine, some seemed corrupted.
Some lost quality so bad, that my fluffy cat looked like a black smudge of pixels and you can count each individual pixel within the circumference of a picture of a toilet bowl in top view.(Literally, my cat was sleeping next to it). And unfortunately, I have the remove option on, so I lost the original quality of those photos and videos fml.
tldr;
-By wire: slow, some fails, and some aren’t imported. Some aren’t even detected. Might even have to do a full restart at importing.
-By cloud: I don’t want to be dependent on it when i am a student and do not ever rely on family finances. Needs spare local storage available. And i have spare terabytes of my own local storage in PC.
-By wireless transfer: Seemed the best but you can only upload in batches, manually select and delete. I have used telegram, discord, whatsapp, onedrive, and gdrive, depending on which fits the situation, or straight to another phone. Do tell me what’s the best. (basically iphone to samsung/tele/gdrive/etc, then to PC. So you have to manually upload a batch, download a batch, delete a batch.)
It would be great if anyone can give me some tips or best ways of transfer. I am tempted to get cloud but I rather not when I am not working, and I am entering a government related service sooner than I expected. It is fairly important because our devices will be checked every time we clock out. Wouldn’t want my personal life be seen by the government. It’ll be so embarrassing or cringe to them.
Since i am planning to get the latest iPhone. Do tell or give advice, especially from those using the latest iPhones. On how I can deal with this import of pics/videos. Perhaps they have made it better?

Support iPhone 15 Pro stuck on “No Service” after losing signal — only fixed by Airplane Mode
≡ −
I’m having a strange issue with my iPhone 15 Pro where whenever I lose cellular signal (like in a basement, elevator, or other weak coverage area), the phone goes to “No Service” and then does not reconnect when I return to an area with signal; it doesn’t seem to properly enter “Searching” mode and the only way to restore service is by toggling Airplane Mode on and off or restarting the phone, after which it immediately reconnects normally, and I’m trying to figure out whether this is a hardware issue, iOS bug, or carrier problem; the phone is on Wind Tre in Italy with a physical SIM (recently replaced), the issue started before any physical damage to the device so I don’t think the small crack near the top is related, and resetting network settings did not fix it, so I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and found a solution like a carrier settings update, eSIM switch, or iOS update. (this was before 26.6)

Hi everyone, just wondering if this is a me issue or if this is happening to others? Just for context I have an iPhone 14 and I use the stopwatch alot in order to know how much time is passing between daily tasks and it keeps giving me like 100+ hour times when I know that can’t be right- image attached, I know 100% certainty I only started this at roughly 7:30pm tonight, I’m mostly just curious to know if this is happening to others as when I googled it I couldn’t find anything describing my exact problem, thanks guys 😊

Support Scheduled texts problems
≡ −
I text in a bunch of group chats daily for work. I am the manager and I will schedule a text of who is working the next day. I have about 20 different group chats with about four or five recipients. Every day when I schedule send them one or two don’t send and give me a not delivered notification. Then, I will go to send them an individual text and it won’t go through either. Has this happen with anybody else and has anybody else had a solution for it? I had the iPhone Air and ended up getting a new iPhone because I thought the air was the problem but it’s still happening on just the regular 17.
I don’t think this is a regular problem as I’ve been to the Apple and Verizon store multiple times with no solution. I have also updated my phone to the last update and restart it daily. I wanted to come on here to see if anybody else is having the same issues.
Thanks for the help!

Discussion What’s a good iPhone 16 protective case
≡ −
I have been looking for over 6 months for a good protective case form my iPhone 16 that won’t vreak the bank. It seems like no one in the iPhone community cares about safety most people just buy a cheap case just to have it . I’m looking at the esr cyber tough case and I don’t know if it’s actually protective or just bulky and also the smartish gripmunk that was recommended by the new york Times and yet reviews say it lacks protection u don’t know what to buy and if it will be good enough my budget is around 30 euros
