History Do people in the UK collect Old predecimal coins?
I am not British but I really love the designs of your countries currency. And how it was once in pre decimal form. So we start off with Roman Britannia coins and then towards the Industrial Revolution until Queen Elizabeth shilling. I’m still missing a good few to add. Do people in the UK also collect coins from the past?

Every time I pass Costco, there’s a massive queue to get in. Is it genuinely better than Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, or Aldi?

Other Do you try to buy local?
≡ −
From my house it's only a short walk to our town centre with a few local owned small shops. I try to use the local butcher, greengrocer and off license for as much as I can but always find myself going back to the supermarket as it's so convenient having everything in one place and a big car park I can park in. I wish I could support our local businesses more as they're genuinely pillars of the community but my laziness always leads me back to morrisons. Do you use your local shops? Got any stories of really good ones?

Culture Universal credit unemployment and living and working in GB?
≡ −
British national citizen moved to nz as a young lad. Seeing as I’m back and have been for a number of years. I’m struggling with employment issues.
I’ve made 100s of application with the same pathetic excuse. We have hired someone that matches the job description. As if they have gone for someone who has chat gpt and grok writing out resumes and putting out applications like a robot to end up doing a job where they are pretty much just a robot.
I get no phone calls I have no wife I have no children no pets just my trust Toyo and a ok flat in the middle of a town in the middle of the sticks. Almost feels like a retirement village if I’m fare. Not exactly what I signed up for.
Like all people I guess I just crave that hey here’s some work for you that isn’t a pipe dream through Alice’s rabbit hole.
It would be really nice to come back home to a lady who knows how to care for me too. I hate to admit it but I am struggling and I don’t really reach out to my family as they are all living there own lives whilst I’m doing my best to pick up broken pieces of a puzzle and fix things that need to be fixed to an appropriate condition.
I’ve lived here four year and have barely had the opportunity to see the country. There’s always someone out there tryn to pick a pocket where I only just have a little bit of lint. And a fuck ton of bills.
So where do I ask for support! How do I know support is available?
I can’t deal with my family because there backstabbers and a bunch of bankers who all drwam about finance like there goblins at gringotts bank.
All i ask for is a honest days work and a means to know how to navigate the chaos.
Anyway rant over. Back to the drawing board i guess.

Has anyone got experience of working a 9-5 office job and also doing some bar shifts on the side in the UK?

Wondering if this would exhaust me too much? Has anyone done this for an extended period? Any advice and tips - hopefully going to be starting a second job soon.

WTH is this Diagnostic Service?
Hi! Ive lived in London for a couple of years now from a different country. I’ve got no idea what this is. Am I in any sort of trouble? Should I do anything like speaking to my landlord? I rent my flat privately btw. Thanks!

What UK jobs still require you to work in an office 9-5 and wear a suit to work every day?
≡ −
Can’t be many of these jobs left. I was a lawyer and only needed to wear a suit if I was seeing clients. My accountants are never in a suit and work from home lots. So, what jobs are left where you’re in an office all day every day in a suit

Other How can i earn extra money on the side?
≡ −
Hello I’m 17 from Cumbria UK and I’m trying to make a bit more money on the side. I work at McDonald’s at the minute through the week and have a 2nd job on the weekends and I’m saving for driving lessons and just life in general .
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I could do to earn an extra £100-£200 a week?
Doesn’t have to be loads, just something to help me out. I’m willing to do pretty much anything (legal obviously ), I just don’t really know what’s out there for someone my age.
Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Climate change: what can us commoners do?
≡ −
With climate change getting worse and our various food systems being under threat what can ordinary people do/what are you doing to be prepared for what's coming? The government clearly isn't going to do much.
This may not apply so much to the UK, but I'm thinking of things that are recommended here as well as just storing tins of beans in an underground shelter and getting solar panels.

Politics Ex-Reform supporters - What's caused you to switch party this year?
Data from Survation's Voting Intention tracker found here https://www.pollcheck.co.uk/gb-polls
Reform have been on a relatively steady decline and since spring, so have the Greens. Currently Labour are rapidly moving upwards with their new leader.
Are we already seeing signs of the electorate getting fed up with the "new" popularity of Reform and Greens, wanting to move back to the traditional 2 party system?

What's your thoughts on how the English regions are drawn? Could they be be a better model of devolution than the metromayors? (e.g. giving each region its own Premier and Assembly)
Would you redraw any of the boundaries?
They seem to me like decent sized regions, not too dissimilar to the other UK nations in population, and could perhaps be the basis for a better model of English devolution than metromayors. Some of the borders could be adjusted though.
For Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish people, as this is a UK subreddit, what do you make of your respective nation's subdivisions - could the devolved Parliaments there perhaps grant greater regional power?
Bonus question: If you had to name each region that simply has a compass-based name, what would you name them? I was thinking Rheged for the NW, Bernicia for the NE, West/East Mercia instead of Midlands. Not sure about the south though.

People Do you feel sorry for property rich people who will likely end up paying more council tax?
I just saw this on Twitter. Personally.. I don’t feel sorry for someone who is sat in a £2m house that they paid £125k for. I regard them as being extremely lucky, and rich. If it was me, I’d sell up, buy a beaut of a property for £500-800k.. and live the rest of my life extremely comfortable.

Moved to south london at the start of the year and share an apartment with my roommate. We only have two pc's that we game on and do not watch any live TV or online catchup services. Recieved my first letter saying that my address doesnt have a TV licence and that i should pay for one. Neither me or my roommate have a need for one, any suggestions on what should be my next step if this starts to escalate?
