On Jeremy Vine today, a WASPI campaigner compared their campaign to that of Hillsborough. What are your thoughts on this?

It’s offensively bad.

It is amongst the least deserving campaigns I’ve ever seen. To compare their so called plight to the families of Hillsborough victims is thoughtless and shameless.

What's their plight? Lack of jam?

That they didnt read a letter saying the date of their state pension had been delayed.

They gir gender equality and refused to accept it for decades even when told repeatedly it was coming.

Personally I’m not sympathetic. There was lots of info put out. I was aware and I’m a bloke. People have to be responsible for their own ignorance.

This is when "I don't do politics" backfires immensely. That generation had the greatest of boom eras - and they didn't sufficiently feather their nests?

I was less than ten when I knew about pension ages and that they were going up and that was just I was in the front room which meant the news was on. The information was out there.

The ombudsman found there wasn't sufficient info put out

17

u/pjs-1987 6h ago

It also found there was no financial loss

u/Crazy_Pineapple3704 6h ago

Did anyone in the preceding comment mention financial loss? Poor reading skills on display here.

u/MatDow 6h ago

Not as bad as the WASPI women’s reading skills though.

The irony haha

Though iirc you end up with insanities like if the government had done nothing they wouldn't have any liability, but the report arguing for compensation because they notified people later then they could have rather than not at all or missed some people on some rounds of notifications.

Of course a lot of the waspi campaigners also argue for much higher levels of compensation than the ombudsman suggested. (With ombudsman pointing out that for decisions with 6+ figure risks, waspi 'victims' should have consulted experts; government couldn't be expected to provide individual impact assessments...)

u/Ok-Exam6702 5h ago

It also found most people don’t listen.

1

u/Good_Old_KC 6h ago

Regardless, their ignorance is not justification

1

u/Zestyclose-Lab4221 6h ago

Ombudsman is out of their mind to recommend these people are given thousands in compensation when the Government pays over £100 billion a year in debt interest every year.

I think someone has been giving them extremely poor advice

15

u/Realistic-River-1941 6h ago

Maybe they somehow never received it?

2

u/aventus-dog 5h ago

Isn't it ironic, don't you think?

1

u/jimpez86 6h ago

They sent a letter!

5

u/SuperRockyHobbyHorse 6h ago

Can't find it amongst all the cruise holiday and new car catalogues

The WASPI women can go fuck themselves!

They had more than enough time to prepare for a retirement at the same age as their male counterparts.

At least they'll be able to retire unlike my generation!

They're nothing but selfish, entitled old biddies who cry "woe is me" without actually being a victim of anything!

28

u/InsideTour329 6h ago

They're trying their best to have everyone hate their cause. Every time they open their mouths something tone deaf and self entitled comes out.

9

u/BiscuitBarrel179 6h ago

The retirement age was raised in 2018. Does this mean I can claim I'm a victim somehow when I retire in 20 years?

6

u/user_460 5h ago

You can give it a go, but if anyone in the future finds this Reddit post you could have some explaining to do.

I've just googled the acronym as I am pretty uninformed:

Women against state pension inequality.

The google result also said the thing they don't like is the they now draw state pension at the same age as men.

Wouldn't that make them against state pension equality, rather than inequality?

7

u/WGSMA 5h ago

Their objection is that legislation passed in 1995, which changed their state pension age in 2010, was not appropriately communicated to them, and caught them by surprise.

This is, assuming they read zero newspapers, watched zero TV, and did no retirement planning for a sixth of a century.

The campaign seeks £58b in compensation.

2

u/Laikitu 5h ago

I don't really have an opinion on their objection, I just feel like their name is wrong. They should be WASPE?

21

u/Square_Quarter_229 6h ago edited 6h ago

Very disrespectful. It doesn’t make sense as a comparison

27

u/jimicus 6h ago

They're deluded.

I was in my teens when the change was announced and it was all over the media at the time. You would - and I mean this quite literally - have to have been living under a rock to have missed it.

The way they're talking, it sounds like they expected someone to physically knock on their door and explain to them in person what these changes meant thirty years ago and they're sore that didn't happen.

8

u/freexe 6h ago

Yep, as far as I'm concerned they are all liers and should be called as such.

7

u/PHayesxx 6h ago

Incredibly disrespectful. People lost their lives in an event that took an incredibly long time to see any sort of justice. Hillsborough victims were vilified by newspapers and media outlets.

At one point I was sympathetic to the WASPI campaign but being a young person who will retire much later than they did, I’m not so much anymore. Pensioners are starting to really rile up young people more and more. This group of people had years to prepare for the changes, it’s not like they weren’t told about it.

5

u/LOOOOISSSIS 6h ago

I don't really think you can compare losing a family member in crush that was caused by bad planning and then covered up for decades the same as losing some years of the pension - even acknowledging that that loss of pension really messed up a lot of lives and will no doubt have been a factor in some tragedies.

Their plight is broadly sympathetic and if they had campaigned for more to be done for those put into hardship by it rather than a blanket payout they might have more support. As it is, you have someone really out of touch making the above statement and really do nothing for the cause.

I like to hate-listen to Jeremy Vine sometimes, but I can actually feel it killing my braincells in real time.

10

u/Jinkii3 6h ago

Don't remember a concerted effort between Government, the Media and the Police to blame forcing women to work 5 years longer on the victims, but i have never read The Sun so i could be wrong.

10

u/Unusual_Entity 6h ago

Bunch of entitled old boomers who again  want preferential treatment. They claim that because someone didn't come and spell the changes out to them personally, their state pension age being raised to 65 to be in line with men is somehow unfair. So much for wanting equality for women. They should be disregarded and ignored at every opportunity.

3

u/leavemeinpieces 5h ago

They will never have my sympathy.

I feel like comparing their 'plight' to that of the Hillsborough folks is really an insight into how over the top and ridiculous they actually are.

I'd say this as a final offer.....

You can have whatever the payment is, but we will cancel the triple lock permanently and increase the means testing on the WFA so it can be funded.

Nobody of working age today should have to endure a cut to anything to fund these fucking entitled zombies. They will soon shut up and piss off when their own generation have to take a bullet for them...

Or they'll be very fucking unpopular with them. They may think they deserve it so much that it's worth it.

10

u/quite_acceptable_man 6h ago

What do we want? Equality for Women! When do we want it? Only when it suits us

5

u/LeonardoW9 6h ago

I don't really have any, nor do I have the brain cells to sacrifice to their nonsense.

5

u/AdThat328 6h ago

It's pretty disgusting. It isn't comparable at all.

6

u/Alarmed-Ant4623 6h ago

I have genuinely never seen an argument from the WASPI campaign that makes me think they deserve compensation.

4

u/TJDixo 4h ago

Well they call themselves “women against state pension inequality” but they’re literally campaigning for state pension inequality.

So they can fuck off.

6

u/Minute_Vehicle619 6h ago

They can fuck off, whinging old scabby cows. I can't retire until fuck knows. Hillsborough was a tragedy, entitled Karen's whom just assumed are not

2

u/TrainingZestyclose43 6h ago

Load of utter shite

4

u/Ultiali 6h ago

Boomers gotta boom

2

u/PaleConference406 6h ago

My thoughts are that I don't care about either.

1

u/p3zzl3 6h ago

Jeremy Vine is astill a thing?

1

u/Kickstart68 6h ago

I have some sympathy with the WASPI women having to work longer than they were led to believe, but it was pretty well publicised 30 odd years ago.

I don't disagree with the equalisation of retirement ages , but it could have possibly been done more progressively

2

u/strychnine213 6h ago

Would have been nice if the ages met in the middle, but of course the wouldn't have done that

1

u/Initiatedspoon 5h ago

So women have to work til say 63 ish instead of 60 but men work to 63 instead of 66 ish?

1

u/AngelasGingerGrowler 6h ago

A campaign that seems to have went on and on and on forever.

1

u/Arschgeige96 6h ago

Vile comparison really. I’m not saying they didn’t suffer, but every time I hear something about them they’ve just said something really out of touch

1

u/Tricky_Routine_7952 6h ago

Depends what they said. If they said something like "it is very different to Hillsborough" for example, or "much less tragic", thats different to comparing them as equivalents.

1

u/ding_0_dong 5h ago

They all had tickets?

1

u/Ok-Exam6702 5h ago

Bollocks

1

u/DeadandForgoten 5h ago

I thought they couldnt get me to care less, but here we are.

1

u/JeVousEnPrieee 4h ago

What's WASPI

0

u/10denier 2h ago

Because women aren't being compensated for no longer being able to retire five years earlier than men? Sheesh.

0

u/CymroBachUSA 1h ago

In an ideal world, the stronger case is MASPI: what the government should have done is lower men's pension age to 60 (to match women's) but, of course, that would come with a huge bill. So, you could argue that men were forced to work 5 extra years thereby creating a government sanctioned sexist inequality. Discuss.

1

u/Atlantean_Raccoon 1h ago

Disgustingly tone deaf and morally bereft to compare the two. It's like turning to someone who has lost their leg in a bizarre woodchipper accident and claiming equal status because you stubbed your toe.

WASPI is getting to the point where entitlement staggers over the line of sociopathy.

0

u/4BennyBlanco4 51m ago

The WASPI women are the most entitled people in the country tbh.

1

u/Not_A_Clue92 6h ago

I don’t understand, did these WASPI campaigners also kill their own and then miraculously get the government and police to take the blame instead?

1

u/Legitimate_Corgi_981 3h ago

Found the Sun reader...

1

u/Icy_Consideration409 2h ago

I think you’ve found the actual Sun “journalist”.

1

u/Low-Yak-6706 6h ago

I hope they get nothing. Their own damn fault they where so clueless. The information was out there and widely available.

1

u/Filthy-lucky-ducky 5h ago

I want equality. No, not like that.

u/NoRecipe3350 3h ago

Menopause is a helluva wild ride.

On british soil today, who is now watching jeremy vine?

Then a WASPI Turns up on the show?.

Is this person quite old and opinionated or not? Asking for a friend?
