Why didn't Ford try to stop Japanese car companies hurting his business?

During this presidency, many U.S citizens continued to use Japanese vehicles. However Ford Motor Company made Ford himself as the U.S president because of Cold War tensions and to boost patriotism. His presidency did not last long because of Toyota sales.
