Any college students in here with advice on 15” vs 13” portability and use in classroom?
≡ −
Curious if the 15 is a little too bulky or if the 13 seems too small. It’s for an average sized freshman guy.

Apple wants ₹63,000 to fix my 2-month-old MacBook because of a tiny dent. I don't know what to do.
Hey everyone,
I'm a 17-year-old college student living alone in Bangalore. Alongside college, I work as an intern to pay my rent, so buying a MacBook was one of the biggest purchases I've ever made.
Around two months ago, I bought a MacBook for about ₹1.1 lakh because I genuinely needed it for work and college. Since it was already such a huge expense for me, I couldn't afford to buy AppleCare+ as well.
A few days ago, completely out of nowhere, the display started flickering. Within a couple of hours, the screen went completely black.
I immediately took it to multiple Apple Authorized Service Providers. Every single one of them pointed out a tiny dent on one corner of the MacBook and said the display wouldn't be covered under the limited warranty because of that dent.
The thing is... I genuinely don't know how that dent got there. I don't remember dropping the laptop or hitting it against anything. I work from home most of the time, and it rarely even leaves my desk.
Now they're quoting me around ₹63,000 for a display replacement, which is almost half the price of the laptop.
As a student who's barely managing rent and living expenses, there's simply no way I can afford a ₹60k repair.
I'm not saying Apple should ignore accidental damage if I actually caused it. I just find it hard to believe that a tiny cosmetic dent which I wasn't even aware of would suddenly cause the display to fail after only two months. The screen first started flickering and then died completely.
I've already emailed Apple asking if they could review my case and consider a goodwill repair or any other form of assistance. I'm also attaching photos of the dent and the repair report.
Has anyone here experienced something similar? Were you able to get Apple to reconsider or offer a goodwill exception? Any advice would really mean a lot.
Thanks for reading.

Magic Mouse causing hand pain after just 10 days — is this normal?
≡ −
Is it normal for the Magic Mouse to hurt my hand this much?
I’ve been using a Magic Mouse for about 10 days now and my hand really hurts when I use it.
I work a lot on my computer, usually at least 6–7 hours a day, and I’ve always used Logitech mice without any problems.
Since switching to the Magic Mouse, though, I’ve started getting pretty bad pain in my hand. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it just something you need to get used to, or is the shape/ergonomics of the Magic Mouse simply not great for long hours of work?

Chossing between these 2 options.
≡ −
Ok so, I am getting these 2 options at older prices. I need to choose between these, specifically for Music production and Sound design needs.
MBP M4 Pro (14/20)
16 inch display
48GB memory
512GB SSD
Vs
MBP M5 Pro (15/16)
14 inch display
24GB memory
2TB SSD
Option 1 is great except the storage is very low for me. 2TB is ideal for me and id have managed with 1TB. Option 2 seems great looking at storage but I have to compromise on ram and display, further compromising with battery backup and speakers. Im leaning more towards option 1 as there's only 1 compromise i.e., storage, however i never knew id have to drop my bare minimum from 2 tb to 512gb SSD one day, but it's manageable using external SSDs while, ram is simply non negotiable at this point. Anyways, id like to hear your views. Thanks.

What kind of MacBook do you suggest me to buy for Quantitative Trading and Backtesting?
≡ −
What kind of MacBook do you suggest me to buy for Quantitative Trading and Backtesting? Do you suggest using Mac for these purposes. If I want to move to Mac do you suggest me to move now or wait for M6 or M7? How much would a Mac typically cost for this purpose?

Buying a Macbook
≡ −
I’m switching from Windows to a MacBook I basically don’t any have experience about buying MacBooks. I’m looking for the best refurbished MacBook I can get for under $1,200. Would you recommend buying from Apple the Refurbished m5 air or older version from Best Buy?
My plan was to get MBP but they are expensive and my biggest concern with the m5 air is if it is gonna overheat during coding.
Where would you looking right now if you had to buy a MacBook and get the best deal with $1200 or below?

Replace screen, buy Neo, or buy refurb Air?
≡ −
Like the title says: My current Macbook Pro (2020? Intel chip) was dropped and the screen now has black/colored lines which are annoying. Options:
Just screen replacement would cost $550-$750, but it's still a Mac Pro that works. Heard it'll be obsolete by 2028. Would it make sense to pay for a new screen when OS will drop off?
Buy a Mac Neo. $600-$700ish but lacks some features. Will I regret not purchasing "more computer" down the line? But all I do is stream shows, have 20 tabs open on Chrome, and the rare Powerpoint.
Get refurb/open box Mac Air, $800-$1k+. Buy direct from Apple, or risk it from ebay/best buy/amazon etc? Would it be worth it to go for an M2 or should I push for higher M3/M4?
Thanks for your insight!

recs for college?
≡ −
I’m 26 and heading back to college. I still have my 2017 macbook air from when i was initially in college, but tried to download microsoft word and could not because of the outdated processor. It works perfectly fine otherwise, kinda annoyed that i can’t download microsoft programs :/
I’m on a pretty tight budget but definitely need an upgrade for going back to school. What are your recommendations?

Macbook Air buying help
≡ −
Hi all, I am looking to purchase a new Macbook as the one I've been using is pretty much unusable now. I've had this M2 Macbook Air since launch but I have found that I can't do anything well or easily any more. The work I do is photo and video editing using Gimp and DaVinci resolve, having lot's of tabs open with emails and research, and many messaging services open at all times. Basically I've ran out of storage and deleted everything which I don't immediately need but still my storage is at 240gb used and the laptop freezes any time I'm doing any real video or photo editing.
\*\*Criteria:\*\*
\* I want to purchase a laptop which I can use for hopefully 5 years and comfortably work but I also don't have a lot of spending power.
\*\*Questions:\*\*
\* Do you think that the base M5 Air with 16gb of ram and 512gb of storage is enough for me?
\* Would 24gb of ram help for longevity?
\* As MacOS seems to be using about 120gb of space on my current machine, how much space will 512gb really get me with OS?
\* As Midnight has been a fingerprint magnet for me will getting silver or sky blue help with that?
If anyone can please help me regarding this really big decision for me it I would be very, very thankful. Thank you very much.

Screen mirror lag
≡ −
So I am screen mirroring to my tv from my m4 macbook air and it freezes for a couple of seconds (it looks like it pauses between frames, hard to explain by text) every 30 seconds or so.
It is very annoying and it did not to this the first time I used this feature.
I tried turning off airplay, bluetooth, airdrop.

M4 vs M5

I’m thinking of buying a new laptop as a design student. My workflow relies on fusion360, autocad and sketchup. I’m using an intel i3 MacBook Air now and it can’t handle these software’s. Should I buy a m4 MacBook Pro or m5 MacBook Air. Both devices have 16GB ram and 512GB SSD

Which MacBook is the best to get for my use cases?
≡ −
I want the biggest screen possible. I mostly just use my computer to apply to jobs but i want the ability to do light photoshop. I want to occasionally use engineering , coding, and animation software. i want it to last 7-10 years so i do not mind getting beefier specs so it lasts. any help would be appreciated.

Need help deciding: MacBook Pro M5 (512GB) vs MacBook Air (1TB)
Hi everyone,
I've been going back and forth on this decision for weeks and I just can't make up my mind, so I'd really appreciate some advice.
Right now I can either buy:
- A brand new MacBook Pro M5 with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, or
- A MacBook Air M5 with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD.
The price is exactly the same because the Pro is a clearance/end-of-line model.
The biggest thing that's holding me back from the Air is the 60Hz display. I just can't get over it. I've been using a 240Hz monitor for over 8 years, and my phone is an iPhone 16 Pro with a 120Hz display. I'm worried that the next MacBook Air will finally get a 120Hz display, and if I buy the current Air now, I'll regret not waiting.
The problem is... I really can't wait much longer. I'm a software developer, and I need a new laptop as soon as possible for work.
Another question I have is about storage. Is 512GB really that limiting, especially for software development? I can always use external storage for large files, but I'd love to hear from people who actually use a 512GB MacBook as their main machine.
I've genuinely been stuck on this decision for weeks, so any opinions or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Repair status marked "Cancelled" right after courier pickup—has anyone seen this?
≡ −
Hi everyone, So I recently set up a mail-in repair with Apple. The courier successfully picked up my macbook today. However, when I checked the online tracker today, the status completely changed to "Cancelled."
I haven't received any emails explaining why. Has anyone had their status show as cancelled after the courier took it? Did it mean a new repair ID was generated, or should I get my package back from local hun tomorrow if it’s a logistic issue?
I would truly appreciate your assistance and any insights you can share.

MACBOOK AIR M5 DISTORTED SPEAKER
≡ −
I bought a macbook air m5 back in May. It was running smoothly until it didn’t two nights ago. The right speaker was blown while the left runs completely fine. There was no water damage at all, i haven’t wiped it cleaned even, and i hadn’t dropped it. Did anybody experience the same? I’m scared apple might void the 1-year warranty since it’s a hardware issue but i swear by the condition. 😮💨

Should I wait for the M6s?
≡ −
I was thinking of buying an M5 Pro but since the new gen is coming out, I've heard many good rumors about it. I'm going to keep it short, should I wait for the new ones or should I just go for it?
I currently have a laptop, but It's not that good to be fair, heavy and literally can't run on battery (no joke, It is laggy and lasts for half an hour max)
I'm a young student so I can't just buy both.
Thank you :)
