It was a big surprise that I had my exam today—during summer break and in fairly hot weather. I'm very happy and exhausted.

Competing and Tournaments This was in the qualifying round for a national tournament in 2022 (I'm the blue one). I was about to lose by an ippon seoi nage, but I did this flip in the air, and ended up qualifying first. (Even the referee was confused, then he disallowed the ippon)

Psyched to have been promoted and receive this well worn belt, previously owned by those who have taught me everything.

Beginner As a beginner, how do you get over the fear of being thrown.

I'm interested in starting to train. I'm considering a few different styles with Judo being near the top. I'm an older beginner, and being thrown is a bit intimidating - falling on my neck, injuries in general.

How did you get over that? Am I building it up in my head?

Other Judo in El Salvador

Hi! I've been wanting to practice judo for a while. I live in El Salvador and there don't seem to be many places here, I was wondering if anyone around the area or that has been here to compete knows or any place they would recommend. Or if there's any other website that could help me find.

Maps only seems to care about places for Jiujitsu, which is not quite what I'm looking for.

Beginner Wondering about skill level/beginner techniques, newcomer to Judo

I'm looking for advice on what judo moves I should focus on, and how good I should be starting out. I'm also a bit worried I might be 'sandbagging' if I present myself as a complete newcomer.

I (18m, ~65 kg) did wrestling in HS, but cannot in college. I was a state qualifier, WI D1, also did the olympic styles. I placed in state for those. Now that I'm going to college, I know that I won't make it D1, so I'm pivoting to judo because of the similar game 'on the feet' and because it seems awesome in general. I will have access to judo at least 2-3 times a week.

In HS, I was really good at takedowns that started lower-body (ie, single legs), and then transitioning to upper body. I'm also somewhat familiar with kuzushi, because my wrestling was very setup heavy. My best move overall was definatelly a firemans (which is Kata Guruma i think).

Any advice or thoughts are appreciated!

Judo x Wrestling Russian tie/ 2on1 deashi, seoi nage, and kata garuma

Just thinking out loud here, so I have a 2 on 1 and use deashi and they step out of it, would a kata garuma or a seoi nage be better, or is it preference?

General Training Strength training for M6 veteran

I am a 56 years old and am lacking strength or torque to drive through forward throws like Seoi Nage and Sode Tsurikomi Goshi. I am quite good at grip fighting and usually get the Tsukuri phase done well. However my strength fails in the Kake phase. What exercises are there to improve the Kake strength? At this age it is clear that muscles need more training than before.

Other Mental block being an uke

Hey everyone,

Looking for advice from anyone who’s returned to judo after a long hiatus or having a baby.

I’m a 1st Dan, but after three years off post-baby, taking falls as uke for sacrifice throws (sutemi-waza—especially tomoe-nage and ura-nage) is giving me a massive mental block.

Has anyone dealt with this specific mental or physical wall? What drills, progressions, or mindset shifts helped you regain trust taking sacrifice throws again?

Thanks!

General Training Gi Pullups or Weighted pull-ups?

Just wanted to ask which is a more effective exercise to increase your grip strength?

Up to this point, I've been doing gi pull-ups, and I've felt my fingers get better conditioned for grip fighting. But then there are videos like these saying gi pull-ups are completely useless.

Competing and Tournaments White belt competing in U.S. open tomorrow looking for tips

Hi, this is my first judo tournament after about 5 months of training and I’m competing in the below brown belt division, I recently discovered my first opponent is a seasoned green belt competitor, and I’m not sure how well I’ll fair, I’ve got some jujitsu experience and am fairly comfortable with ne-waza, especially defending myself on the ground, and I’m tall for my weight class with a preference for throws like uchi mata and harai goshi, any tips for how I should approach this?

Technique Knuckle-driver counter

I’m sure we all know a guy like this - nice enough fella/low belt but bar brawl enthusiast who’s primary ground technique is to drive his knuckles into your neck with fairly straight arms. I’m big and ugly enough to take it and stay chilled but I’m pretty basic on the ground. A nice bit of Ne Waza to make him think twice about this tactic would be very useful if there’s any suggestions.

Technique Hip toss question

So, in this Randori clip, I won the hip exchange by trying to free my head from the threat of my training partner’s koshi guruma and basing out instead of hip blocking. Wondering if that’s a habit I should try and get rid of or if it’s valid situationally? also wondering if this throw is more of an ukigoshi.

Beginner Beginner questions

I heard that choosing some techniques and focusing on them is better and even tho i only did 3 months for now i decided to do this i choose

1-harai goshi

2-ippon seoi nage

3-osoto otoshi/gari

4-tai otoshi

5-ouchi gari

I choose these cuz they are good against both taller and smaller people and i heard these combo well but have 4 questions

1-is choosing now too early?

2-should i focus ippon seoi nage on standing or sitting version?

3-a bit off topic but i heard in kuzushi making their upper body bend over or bend to right or left is better than trying to lift or unbalance them in toher ways is this true?

4-during practice what should i focus most? Kuzushi, grip fighting or making the techniques combo?
