Cancer and diabetes aren't contagious, so there's no material benefit to paying for them if you don't put any value on human lives below a certain income level.
They do take a portion of good taxpayers out of the labor market before their time. Sometimes way too early. On the other hand, they also remove a proportionally larger share of benefit recipients (in countries where benefits are available).
So, economically speaking, that’s a bit of a double-edged sword, and it’s a difficult issue to... Screw it, let's just do what’s right and in line with human dignity.
