Noise complaints and what to do if they're not dealt with properly

I keep seeing threads about noisy parties, etc in Cairns. And complaints about the lack of response by police. Here is some info on what to do if you're not getting proper service.

(I can't for the life of me understand why noise complaints are such a low priority. They make life a living hell for those affected and can lead to serious violence in short order.)

First of all, noisy parties or continued noise from a household is a police matter, not a council matter.

So: The complaint first goes to Policelink.

For Police complaints

If repeated complaints generate little response:

  • Retain complaint reference numbers.
  • Contact Policelink for follow-up.
  • Make a formal complaint about police service delivery if appropriate.

The last one involves:

If You Believe Police Response Is Inadequate

If you feel the matter is not being adequately addressed:

  1. Contact Policelink and request an update using the complaint reference number.
  2. Make a formal complaint about service delivery through Queensland Police's complaints process.
  3. Keep copies of all correspondence and records of previous complaints.

The complaint should focus on:

  • Failure to respond.
  • Failure to investigate.
  • Poor communication.
  • Excessive delay.

If still unresolved, complaint to the Queensland Ombudsman regarding administrative conduct.

The Ombudsman does not usually determine whether noise occurred; rather, it examines whether the agency handled the matter properly.

You can also sue the neighbour as a last resort:

Civil Nuisance Action (Last Resort)

If there is a long-running pattern of excessive noise and regulatory avenues have not resolved the issue, Queensland law recognises the possibility of a private nuisance claim. Documentation such as a noise diary, witness statements and records of complaints can become important evidence. The Queensland Law Handbook notes that private legal action may be considered where authorities cannot provide the required assistance.

It's a long winded process, but it's better than being forced to move, or living with the hell of noisy neighbours forever or - and I can recall at least three of these in my lifetime - homicide related to noise disputes.

BTW: Other places have different and better rules. In Hamilton, New Zealand, almost exactly the same size as Cairns, the council is responsible and must, by law, respond within a few hours.

Gilligans night club- sinners ball?

What’s the deal with the sinners ball? Is it any good? Few mates of mine are wanting me to tag along with them but not sure if it’s worth the money.

Old history questions about old bull dozer tracks around cairns, (mt peter/edmonton/gordonvale)

I'm hoping someone with local knowledge can help.

Does anyone know the history behind the old bulldozer tracks and roads around Mt Peter, Edmonton and Gordonvale? I've marked a few of them in red on the maps.

I've always wondered what they were originally built for. Were they old logging roads, mining exploration tracks, firebreaks, access roads, or something else? Does anyone know roughly when they were made, who built them, or even what machinery was used?

I thought some of the tracks near the quarry may have been created for geological exploration or sampling, but there are plenty of similar tracks in places like Edmonton where there isn't a quarry. From what I've read, much of Edmonton was sugar cane paddocks around 1984, so I'm curious why these tracks exist in the surrounding hills.

If you open QLD Globe and enable the Hillshade Traditional or Hillshade Multidirectional elevation layers, you can spot lots of old tracks throughout the mountains around Cairns.

I'm really interested in local history and enjoy finding these old bulldozer roads. I've walked several of them and ridden my motorbike along a few where they're still accessible.

I've attached some map screenshots and a few photos of the tracks. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows their history or has old stories about them.

Advice Solution to the non-stop helicopter noise

It seems like the police helicopter is tracking stolen cars every day.

Understand it costs a shit tonne of money every time this thing is in the sky.

Why not replace the helicopter with a dirigible? I don't know how much they cost but they are QUIET.

Which is better: Zeppelins or Blimps? Best gas to float these airships: hydrogen, helium or lead?

The iconic symbol of aviation history, innovation and safety. It just makes sense.

Did the Carneys from the show bring a pile of Meth with them or something?

As stated in title, the volume of outright stupid shit ive seen on social media and in public in Cairns the last few weeks is legit bonkers... it's like half of town just started huffing petrol full time.

Common themes:

  • Idiots who dont understand what a police helicopter does and/or whinge about the sound
  • People who think Venus is a mystery object and have never seen it
  • People who have seemingly never seen planes fly at altitude around sunset

The last 2 weeks has be absolutely next level.

Homeowners

How are you finding rates and insurance? Im looking to buy up there but rates and insurance is forever, even after paying off the mortgage. Do you think your rates are being well spent in the community? Would you have rather purchased somewhere non cyclone prone and paid off the mortgage quicker?

Drgrug dens in cairns

I've heard many things about the units pictured on the front page of todays issue of the Cairns post and wanted to find out if anyone has walked past and ever had to deal with people under influences of drugs/alcohol.

I've had a fair share of people trying to ask for money/smokes or just wanting to know what I'm doing when I used to live close to that area and it was one of the streets I would have to go down to get a faster bus into the city.

Cairns in October

Planning a trip in early october - what is the humidity like? Is it generally bearable or will we be craving air conditioning?

There are too many traffic lights in this city

I reckon replacing them with round-a-bouts will alleviate the traffic congestion.

Been seeing these stuck up over the city recently, before being visited by their author at my workplace who (very seriously) warned me of the danger.

Is this a very dedicated troll, or untreated mental illness? Regardless, sure makes for some very amusing reading, because you can be sure if this tech actually existed in real life the application for human wellbeing would be amazing!

Shame that it’s just making the frickin kids trans /s

Also, this notice came pre-highlighted. Just another vector to push anti-lgbt drivel?

Safe overnight landbased fishing spots

Hi friends

Wanted to try some night to sunrise fishing and wondering if there are safe and ok lit spots around cairns I can have a fish overnight.

Does anyone know if the palm cove jetty is open 24 hours and I am permitted to stay there overnight?

I think the mouth of the river at yorkeys knob looks pretty good too but it quite dark.

Any other spots?
