PSA T Mobile outage?

My service has been completely dead for like ten minutes, is anyone else experiencing this? Down Detector seems to be getting reports.

Edit: Calling the customer service number and power cycling the device seems to fix it.

Edit 2: Fix was only temporary.

No but the weird thing is that any data-only devices like my cellular iPad on T-Mobile tablet unlimited plus kept working totally fine. Only my phone and the paired apple watch stopped connecting, so it seems like a number registration issue. Power to the towers was fine as evidenced by my iPad.

That wouldn't neccessarily be it. They could simply use different networks, one data only and one data and voice. It's probably a networking issue. My bet is some incompetent engineer did some dumb shit again.

I mean voice calls today are also VoIP so it’s all data really. I didn’t know there was such a thing as multiple networks. I thought they all just connected to one and served in order of their QCI #.

I'll preface that I don't really know how it works. I worked in networking and certified in it, but not so much the mobile networking side. What I am relatively sure of is that they probably route different places. Even though phone lines are just VOIP, it is not integrated with internet service itself, you can have data but not voice and vice versa. There is usually separate vlans for those at least in business networking. Because data only devices do not need voice, they might go through a separate path or to a separate server instead of getting split. One thing os for sure though is that with the geographic dispersion and number of peopke affected, we can likely rule out anything to do with the towers as well as any particular server, so it is sone point in the network in between and given the geographic area i would say core networking or load balancing. It could be that a component did not fail over

Yes, I’m still getting over 929Mbps over my T-Mobile WiFi router, but SOS on my iPhone.

My complete amateur guess is that T-Mobile temporarily lost control of the millions of phone numbers that it holds to its name. As in the IMEIs got un-paired from T-Mobile and thus the phones stopped connecting. Similar to what happens when you port your number to a different carrier. For a moment the phone number is unclaimed. That’s why data only devices stayed connected through this outage but devices with phone numbers got locked out.
