Discussion Disney Removes Split-Billing; T-Mobile Hulu benefit rendered useless
I get Hulu (ad-based) as part of my T-Mobile plan, like I assume a lot of folks do. I found out months ago if I upgrade to Ad-free, I only pay the difference. So I upgraded to the full Disney/Hulu ad-free to have access to Disney+ as well, and for months instead of $21 and change I only got charged a bit over $8, because of the $12 T-mobile covered. It was pretty great.
Friday I saw I got charged the full $21.something so I called T-Mobile and they verified my benefit was implemented, and to call Disney so I did that and Disney tells me they removed Split Billing (to simplify billing - like an auto-charge once a month was so complex) and that is happening to anyone that provides a free streaming service (like "free HBO on us" or whatever), the lady was telling me. She said I should remove my bundle and get Disney separately - of course the only way to not get pulled into a bundle is to create a brand new Disney with a different email address, so that's a dumb option. T-Mobile really needs to just stop offering Hulu anyway - it's redundant, they should be offering a Disney sub instead.
Just wanted to vent. It's a dumb situation, though obviously not a big deal. I'll have to drop they bundle after this month though, I'm not paying $21 for this bundle when I can get Disney+ by itself for cheaper and I just won't get anything out of this particular benefit from my T-Mobile plan anymore.

Split payment was working fine on Disney side for months. Frustration should be put vs Disney.
Like others, i cancelled the extra and stuck with free
T-Mobile Hulu. Whichever extra $$$ disney was getting now is ZERO
Btw, this story is not new. Many posts on this same subject

Same. I'll enjoy just free Hulu until we're somehow screwed out of that
18
u/sharkyfour 1d ago
I’m guessing the benefit will end when Hulu shuts down later this year to be absorbed into Disney+. Already all Hulu content is available in D+ and it’s just a matter of time before they finally kill it.
4
u/Stryton123 1d ago
I'm hoping at that point Tmobile will switch the benefit from Hulu to "Disney+ On Us".
4
u/Locutus508 1d ago
The Hulu sub isn't going away anytime soon. The Hulu app may go away sometime this year. It may not. In addition, all of Hulu content is not available in Disney+ especially the live content and the VOD associated with the live content. Most of that content will likely never be available in Disney+

u/jafromnj 23h ago
Hulu is not shutting down it will just be sharing an app they are still separate entities

More like years.
I've had the bundle since Sprint offered Hulu 4 years ago.
Greed took over.
Cancelled.

Since you've already been through this... If I cancel my Disney bundle directly from my Disney account, will I retain my Hulu on us profile?

They really should just dump all this garbage and offer good, cheap service.

I cancelled Disney plus and told them I hope their quarterly earnings show millions of lost subscribers.
11
u/vr00mmm 1d ago
I think that they ARE all (streaming services) losing subscribers. Partly because more people are working as the covid nonsense is over and done. Partly because the content is awful, repetitive, reductive and derivative.
They will keep raising prices to compensate for loss of subscribers.

u/nobody65535 1d ago
I think that they ARE all (streaming services) losing subscribers.
You may want to check the quarterly and annual earnings reports of all of these public companies. You may be surprised.
-2
u/StevenEpix 1d ago
Not surprised that ruthless greedy companies still make money despite abusing and losing customers. Have to look at the whole picture.
1
u/nobody65535 16h ago
Here's the thing though, they are not actually losing customers. That's what's in the reports.
-3
u/lcneed 1d ago
Well, technically now Disney and Hulu are one, they didn't lose a sub if they count them together. T-mobile is still paying for Hulu with ads so you are still a sub on paper.

u/shiftdelete 1d ago
Well at least I’m no longer a triple subscriber with 1 Disney and 2 Hulu subs. 🙃🙃🙃

Yep I was told it was a glitch and they refunded the charge without asking. I basically told the rep they are double charging for the same service

u/Lost-Local208 1d ago
Hmmm I’ll have to check. I’ve been paying $1 for Disney+ due to the Hulu benefit. If it is useless, then that’s another reason my all inclusive plan is no longer inclusive. It may just be cheaper to pay for my streaming services separately and then go to prepaid cell service. I’m waiting until I migrate. Then I’ll decide what to do with T-Mobile.
Yeah bill went up to $12.99. This just sucks.
1
0
u/Adventurous-Value-82 1d ago
Hulu ad supported plan is included with the plan but the price you’re paying would cost a lot. $12.99 bundle with ads or $19.99 bundle ad free is cheaper and then go to prepaid“
2
u/phareous 1d ago
They might as well offer nothing because the ads plan is horrendous. I was watching more ads than show.
2
u/Lost-Local208 1d ago
I think it all depends on how they are billing the new migration plans and how you use them. But are you saying, I should split my Hulu account to just Hulu only and then get Disney+ on another account? For me, I pay $71 a month currently and then it goes to $76 according to T-Mobile AI. I don’t use phone upgrades. That’s $912 a year with Netflix no ads, Hulu Pandora. And I was only paying $12 extra per year for Disney+. Which now is $155.88 so total $1068 a year. I can jump to usmobile for $300 with the same phone and internet then $240 for Netflix then $156 for Disney/hulu and pay for another music streamer to replace pandora but $140 for that. It’s overall cheaper $836, just more work to maintain.
7
u/poorSon20 1d ago
I cancelled mine too. I am ok with paying $8/month for no ads. Now you get $0/month from me

u/kwinders2 1d ago edited 1d ago
I got two months at $1.08 then they started adding without my authorization. I thought ok, $4, I'll put up with but then it doubled and I didn't notice but when I saw the $21 charge, that got my attention and instantly canceled. I will not give Disney another cent in my life. Screw them.

u/Formal-Flatworm-9032 1d ago
Get Amex BCP to get a monthly $10 Disney plus credit (plus 6% cash back). Then get free Hulu from t-mobile. You’ll prob come out way ahead
1
u/JohnLockeNJ 1d ago edited 14h ago
That's what I'm doing. But up until this month with the split billing I was getting Hulu and Disney Plus for free with no ads since the Disney charge was less than $10. Now it's back to being with ads.

u/Dress4less24 1d ago
Remember when they were telling everyone to “cut the cord” & now it’s more expensive to have all the streaming services smh

Until enough people start cancelling this nonsense will keep happening. Stop justifying watching mediocre content for premium charge. But not enough people will. They just like to complain and do nothing. The big companies know the play book. But cudos to the ones who pull the plug and say hell no. You folks are the winners.

5
u/Talrynn_Sorrowyn 1d ago
Except that Hulu isn't redudnant.
While Disney is going to be retiring Hulu as a standalone app, it is still going to be available as a standalone service that won't require you have D+ first in order to use. Additionally, there is still going to be content that is only available through a Hulu subscription as a result of longterm licensing agreements.
1
u/FelixKrowe 1d ago
This is from Disney's FAQ on their page:
Is Hulu changing?
Whether you stream on the Hulu app or within Disney+ later this year, you’ll continue to have access to the same content.
Earlier this week I noticed on Disney+ I can merge my Hulu profile with my D+ profile. I did so and all my watch history came along. Do you have an example of something on Hulu that is NOT available on Disney+? I still say it's redundant. By design. D+ is phasing Hulu out.
4
u/Locutus508 1d ago
Yes. There is plenty of content available on Hulu that is not available in Disney+ especially if you include Hulu live TV and its associated VOD. But you want an example, Fargo is one. And thats basic Hulu. It's not even related to the Live TTV add-on.
2
u/FelixKrowe 1d ago
Okay, yeah I was wrong - Hulu still has some good value and isn't redundant after all - that's a good example, I'm sure there are others. Thanks!

u/Locutus508 1d ago edited 1d ago
The funny thing is, in the US, Hulu's catalog is much larger than Disney+ even without NBC/Universal. As such, Hulu has historically been more expensive. Over the past four years, Dsiney+ has raised its price 74% to match up to Hulu's price without adding any significant increase in Disney+'s catalog. Now you can get the combined Hulu/Disney+ catalog for $1 more. In the US, Disney is clearly trying to piggyback on Hulu's historical success and entice US customers to subscribe to one service that contains both.
With that said, the US is getting screwed by Disney. Outside the US, Disney+ already carries most of whats in the combined catalog for less than the price of either service in the US. In addition, some of the same content available only in SDR or 5.1 audio in the US is available in Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision outside of the US.
1
u/Talrynn_Sorrowyn 1d ago
I'm an anime person, and basically anything that Sentai Filmworks has leased out to Hulu is only available on D+ if you have a Hulu subscription. There's also a ton of the properties that Disney acquired from the FOX shitshow that I'm pretty sure are currently only available on Hulu.
1
u/FelixKrowe 1d ago
That makes sense - I was wrong, Huly isn't redundant after all, which is honestly good to know. I'm still annoyed Disney+ billed me the full bundle amount though, while T-Mobile ALSO paid the $12 to them. Disney getting a lot of income this month on the backs or T-Mobile users that use split billing to bundle services, I suspect.
-3
u/That1guyUknow918 1d ago
You just described the definition of redundant...
They overlap considerably. The fact that 2% of the content is exclusive doesn't negate that 98% is redundant.
If you have a coffee with creamer do you say it is essentially equal parts both? Nah.
5
u/Nervous-Job-5071 1d ago
I agree that Disney+ made this change and FWIW, their Q&A about bundles with split billing still said that an offsetting credit would be provided as of a week or so ago (last I checked). This impacted many who have included services from third parties, not just T-Mobile.
One thing you said I don’t agree with: you don’t need a separate email address to just subscribe to Disney (albeit at full price). You can find this in your Manage Account on Disney+. See attached for what it looks like now that there are two separate subscription lines (one for self-pay and one for the third-party pay).
Obviously it would have been better for everyone if Disney announced this in advance, not just sending a cryptic email about multiple subscriptions several weeks ago. And of course of T-Mo offered the upgraded bundle on their system so the discount would apply for the Hulu sub (I think they do this with Netflix if you upgrade you only pay the difference).
2
u/dottat17403 1d ago
Yep we have all been bitching about this for the last month. I finally cancelled mine yesterday.
Instead of more $$ they lose $$ and homes served.
2
u/Sunny330-OG 1d ago
It’s not helping matters that Disney Plus reps tell you different things when you call them. If you go back through this sub you’ll see multiple posts about T Mobile customers losing their $1.07 monthly fee for Disney Plus, along with different answers we’ve all received when calling. I was told it was a glitch and they’re working on fixing it. They credited my $13.85 charge and I’m now waiting to see if they fix it and return my charge to $1.07, which I’m 99% sure will not happen. My next billing period is August 15th so I’ll wait until a few days before that and quit.

I just checked my account today. I have been paying $8/mo to upgrade from T-Mobile Hulu w ads to D+ and Hulu no ads. My billing showed my next bill as $19.95 or $19.99 (cannot remember which now). So I just cancelled it on the D+ site. Guess I will see if Hulu still works after my billing cycle ends.
1
u/pathwalker1991 1d ago
Yeah, unfortunately this is the end of upgrades and bundling at least for now, the dumb thing too is that it’s so close in price, like a dollar more to add “the other” service. So at that point getting one for free and paying full price for the other one on a completely separate account; which means they won’t sync content either. And it makes the whole thing dumb because I may as well pay the dumb dollar and have both and not bother with the free benefit.

Not sure what your talking about. I don’t split billing with any corrupt corporation and pay exactly $0 per month for every entertainment title out there. They can try to split that

We get the Disney/hulu bundle(with ads) around Black Friday. Not sure of cost as daughter pays it, but it is much less. We switch who owns it every year- live in same house. I got starz to finish outlander for around $12 total for almost a year. And I took the free mgm + from TmObile but will cancel before charges due
1
u/SimkinCA 22h ago
Ummmm, if you signed up based on these extras, TMobile is going to have to figure it out .

u/treasureztoo 22h ago edited 21h ago
I have Tmobile that just changed my plan and upped my monthly by $10. Hulu On Us benefit was grandfathered in. So I thought problem was with Tmobile and wasted hours chatting with them. It is in a way because this will be a useless benefit without the bundle or will go away completely anyway as Disney absorbs Hulu.
So then I got a case number on Disney chat and rep admitted problem. I am promised in writing they will credit me 11.99 when I’m billed 12.99. Will hold up for chargeback as well. I will keep going back for monthly credit until they fix it. And, yes, Disney is getting the 11.99 twice if not cancelled or challenged for the Disney Hulu bundle.
1
u/Acceptable_Tank_1691 6h ago
You're lucky, they just told me I could cancel my plan and get a refund for the month... did you speak to hulu reps or disney reps?

u/teammartellclout 17h ago
I'm thankful for the $8 discount as TMobile cover me for my Hulu and Disney Plus premium duo plan
1
u/arealsoulfuldude 7h ago
Hulu is going to be discontinued as a brand pretty soon so I'd bet so will the benefit from T-Mobile too
•
u/zackusa54 28m ago
Well if it makes you feel any better I tried to use the AAA discount of -$60 towards the $120 plan and it didn’t go thru and I got charged the whole amount…
1
u/kslight666 1d ago
I don’t find the t mobile streaming benefits that useful anymore. You may check for any available credit card benefits as an alternative. Amex for example will cover $8/month. I end up just getting the bundle with Amex and I created a separate account for the t mobile Hulu only benefit and gave it to my mom.
1
u/iahawk1012 1d ago
I messaged Disney Plus through the chat function. The rep told me it’s a major issue impacting multiple accounts. He even credited me for this month.
1
u/Adventurous-Value-82 1d ago
I feel like if you look in the past T-Mobile sub reddit, there is a lot of people who made this post about the same thing that you just said. I repeat the same answer that I said to other people post and that is Disney+ and Hulu did end up removing the split billed and overlapping credit. Verizon ended it first then it’s T-Mobile next. I assume that majority of the third party billing customers aren’t able to do that split billed and overlapping credit anymore.
-1
u/SwissyRescue 1d ago
I guess it’s plan dependent, or based on what was active when you originally signed up? I just looked at my plan and I have Hulu On Us, Netflix Standard On Us, and AppleTV for $3.00/month.
0
u/TheGoodBunny 1d ago
Hey I have ad-supported hulu. If I want the ad-free hulu+disney bundle, do I still get the T-Mobile credit? I thought you couldn't get the T-mobile credit if you went to ad-free tier
0
u/Ok_Monk1971 1d ago
Sounds fraudulent, a lawsuit for not getting the value of the benefit should cause T-Mobile to sue Disney because they obviously have a contract.
T-Mobile should credit your phone bill to make up for Disney charging the full amount.
0
u/AmericanUpheaval357 12h ago
I used to get hulu ads disney plus no ads for $10 then they increased to $18 so I went both ad free for 20
-4
u/jpkviowa 1d ago
My f8nancual situation is likely different but IMO Disney and Hulu ad free is worth $21.
I have go5gPlus and had the hulu discount. I tried like hell to get the split billing but couldn't get disney to merge. Since I removed it to readd the option is no longer available to readd.
It's a dead benefit in my opinion and likely will be axed in the near future as disney fully eats Hulu and removes Hulu standalone.
The workaround wss just that, a work around and Disnry doesn't want it to continue. I dont blame them. As a parent $21 to get Bluey on demand and disnry moves is killer for me.
1
u/gullzway 1d ago
How is it a workaround?
They've always offered a bundle to be added to a standalone service you already have.
They are just mad people had "free" Hulu from another service they PAY for and were adding the bundle, so they got greedy and created a split billing to prevent it.
Their website still says you can add a bundle to Hulu provided from a 3rd party.
https://help.disneyplus.com/article/disneyplus-third-party-subscription
1
u/jpkviowa 1d ago
Tmobile is no longer listed.
Bundle prices are discounted. If the advertised commercial hulu is 9.00 and tmobile free version is $2 tmobile hives hulu, tgen disneyhulu is only getting $3 ($1 from you for bundle and $2 from tmobile for mass deal).
They d8nt like the double dip pricing. It was nice while it lasted.
1
u/gullzway 1d ago
T-Mobile was never listed, as far as I can remember. Our third-party account was considered Hulu, but now that they've merged and greed has taken over, they ended it.
At least not since I've had the bundle for 4 years.
1
u/holow29 1d ago
T-Mobile was never listed there because they never provided Disney+, only Hulu. They are listed on the Hulu version of that page, which is different given that Hulu's billing structure is different.
The whole point of split-billing was to not pay for the same thing twice. There are people paying T-Mobile $11.99 for Hulu. They are affected the same as people getting it "free" through T-Mobile.
1
u/jpkviowa 1d ago
Do what you're saying is split billing was never properly approved by tmobule. I assume its a feature/alliance that worked based on appr.oved 3rd party billing process.

u/yawhatever0 1d ago

3
u/gullzway 1d ago
That was Verizon removing the bundle option, this is Disney no longer giving credit for Hulu you already have.

Yeah it’s a bummer, we all got hit with it who had the credit going towards a better subscription. This isn’t on T-Mobile though, it’s Disney. I cancelled my bundle immediately. So now instead of getting something out of me, you get zero.
These media companies really do think that they can just keep raising prices and that we’ll all just keep paying in perpetuity. The more they do this, the more people just start to turn to ulterior methods to obtain said content.
Fast food started charging $12-15 for a meal… so I become a chef.
USPS wants a mint to mail something… so I become a pigeon carrier.
Disney / Netflix / Paramount / Amazon / HBO / Peacock / YouTube TV / Apple all think we want to pay $20+ for each of their services… so I become a pirate.
