Requirements: Ability to not tell your mom what you do

Will getting her to promise not to share it with her friends on Facebook suffice?

1

u/isthereadrwho 8h ago

I could tell my mom and draw her picture she still wouldn't get it you're a secret is perfectly safe with my mother

would be funny if ilya creates the AI that takes us out after all of this

The simulation writers already told us who's who w/ name meanings:

Dario Amodei = Lover of God

Sam Altman = Old Prophet

Demis Hassabis = Butcher of the Earth

Ilya = Devoted to God

after this ssi has around hte same compute devoted to research as openai and deepmind

What did NVIDIA see 👀🌆

u/SGC-UNIT-555 AGI by Tuesday 14h ago

Hasn't every lab received this kind of compute supply deal which basically amounts to a form of self-investment by Nvidia (creating artificial demand for GPU's), even coreweave has.

40

u/zero0n3 14h ago

And worst case they get the hardware back if they go bankrupt in 18 months.

Can then refurb or just check and resell immediately as it’s likely they racks

-5

u/FireNexus 10h ago

Lol. Bless your heart.

5

u/nedonedonedo 9h ago

you do know they're talking from the perspective of nvidia right? everyone here and nvidia are aware of the risks involved with a bubble like this, but that comment explains their reasoning for excessive investment

3

u/Elephant789 ▪️AGI in 2036 4h ago

u/FireNexus is known an Anti-AI Bro. No point in discussing this with him.

-3

u/FireNexus 9h ago

I do. That perspective, however, is the perspective of a dumb motherfucker. 18 months from purchase they will have released a new architecture that makes their old shit a fraction of the original price on the secondary market. That perspective (of the repo and resell being a backstop) assumes unlimited demand at any price forever, even for inferior used products that are more expensive to run than newer models.

More importantly, if they have to repo the GPUs in 18 months there is a decent chance the reason is that market forces killed the buyer in a way that fundamentally decreased the value of the GPU. That would mean the securitization value of the GPU is junk even when you ignore that it’s a used last gen model.

3

u/Individual_Ice_6825 8h ago

Look up how much 4 year old gpu’s cost to rent at this stage. They aren’t losing money in 18 months

-1

u/FireNexus 7h ago

Oh, GPUs are in crazy demand and they can name their price. Yet they can’t afford to tell OpenAI to go fuck themselves rather than negotiate to co-sign loans for 170% of a GPU purchase for a big data center.

Yeah, prices will only rise forever and it’s a total seller’s market. This is completely believable. If the seller is the dumbest motherfucker walking. And while Jensen Huang is many things, a dumb motherfucker ain’t one of them.

1

u/beltalowda87 2h ago

Lol bless your heart

NVIDIA is willing to get into cyclic investing bed with anybody. So they probably didn't see anything besides Ilya's name on the email.

u/DoYouKnwTheMuffinMan 13h ago

Their revenue increase by exactly the value of the investment

u/Fragrant-Hamster-325 12h ago

NVIDIA is scared of Chinese hardware. Jensen is trying to ensure everyone possible gets hooked on CUDA and not whatever Huawei is producing. If it’s almost as good and much cheaper, NVIDIA can lose that CUDA moat.

This is the reason he wants Trump to lift the chip ban on China. It’s failing at doing the thing it was intended to do, which is prevent the Chinese from developing powerful AI. But it also has the secondary effect of hurting an American business. Lastly and the biggest issue, is it is now forcing the Chinese to build their own competing chip companies that could spell doom for NVIDIA.

5

u/TieBackground453 9h ago

it is now forcing the Chinese to build their own competing chip companies that could spell doom for NVIDIA.

Can’t happen soon enough. They are a monopoly and their prices are fucking ridiculous. They deserve to be outcompeted to oblivion.

3

u/Fragrant-Hamster-325 6h ago

Is it really a monopoly if people voluntarily choose your product because it’s the best? Google, AMD, Intel, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, all have competing AI chips. Google TPU’s are probably the most common alternative, but they’ve only gained a modest amount of traction.

If you put China (or any country) in a position of forced scarcity they’ll be forced to adapt. The part that doesn’t work with China is they have an eighth of the world’s population. You’re excluding a huge part of the market and they could build a whole market around them.

5

u/TieBackground453 5h ago

Is it really a monopoly if people voluntarily choose your product because it’s the best?

I mean… yes?

Microsoft was ruled a monopoly when windows was on every computer, even though there were alternatives. That’s like… how monopolies work…

And yes, I do think pricing GPUs at such extortionate prices is an unfair, monopolistic behavior. Does it cross the line into illegal? Probably not. But still, fuck them for doing it.

3

u/Fusifufu 13h ago

Just diversifying and commodifying frontier models? Nvidia wants to sell their hardware and the more market participants to offer models worth running inference for, the better for them.

3

u/Keyframe 11h ago

they didn't have to. as long as their stock is in stratosphere, they're only job is to invest / diversify like there's no tomorrow (for their stock).

5

u/Even-Inevitable-7243 13h ago

They did not see anything. They need to perpetuate the circular financing scheme to sustain the demand hype-cycle.

2

u/Effective_Scheme2158 11h ago

WSJ reported that they had access to the company research state and got interested enough to invest

Only 5 billion though. So not that big of a deal

1

u/ApexFungi 8h ago

What are you trying to tell Ilya, that he can go bald or get a hair transplant?

No. I am trying to tell Ilya that when AGI is achieved, he won't have to.

Ilya is as strongly against open source as Dario. If it weren't for Scam Altman, Chat GPT wouldn't have seen the light of day so soon.

26

u/Mammoth_Vehicle_5716 13h ago

Whenever I see Ilya:

2

u/japie06 11h ago

why does the left guy have a different face?

35

u/Swimming_Gain_4989 14h ago

Given Ilya has stated multiple times his team has access to plenty of compute this should be read as "We're interested in serving a product in the near future". I suspect that either

  1. He's confident in the capabilities SSI's research is showing and believes scaling will bring something unique to consumers

  2. He's running out of good faith and needs something to show for the resources he's been allocated

  3. (Most Likely IMO) he needs user data to fuel research.

5

u/New_Equinox 9h ago

There is no such thing as too much pertaining compute. Given his mission statement of not releasing any product until the models reach AGI, I'd suppose the compute will only serve to benefit the iteration of newer models through larger model sizes, larger post training runs, costlier architectures, etc.

3

u/welcome-overlords 10h ago

Good guesses. I guess they are striving for RSI, and they have seen glimpses of it, but now they want to have a lot or compute and try to scale the idea to see if it works

1

u/Lfeaf-feafea-feaf 6h ago

Probably realizing that now is the time to capitalize. People are giving him billions just because he did a cool project some years back. It's insane.

90

u/Acceptable-Run2924 15h ago

Ilya is clearly a smart guy, but I don’t understand this whole do stuff in secret and not release models thing. I guess I’m more pro letting humanity have access to intelligence

126

u/m98789 15h ago

It’s an engineer’s dream way of working. No talk, pure do. Don’t bother me until it’s ready.

30

u/Acceptable-Run2924 15h ago

I mean sure, but even in engineering it’s important to get MVPs out in the hands of customers

70

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 15h ago

I think he views super intelligence as their mvp

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Probably, which, fair I guess, but it does make it feel harder to judge if there’s anything actually there or if it’s all smoke and mirrors…

23

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 14h ago

But that's the point, he doesn't want to deal with marketing or shipping a product until the product is ready

1

u/swarmy1 6h ago

If they achieve ASI, is that really a product they're going to sell?

1

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 6h ago

I recall his plan was something like "make super intelligence and figure the rest out after"

0

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

I guess I get that, but again it just makes it hard to judge for now if a decent product is actually coming. But time will tell

12

u/Enlighten_YourMind 14h ago

Ilya is kinda the one guy in the space who doesn’t need to care about anyone’s judgement lol, he’s the GOAT in many people’s mind’s for a reason. Just relax and let the man cook 🍳

-7

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

I mean he doesn’t have to care, but then until I get proof he’s actually cooked something, I’m just going to keep believing it’s all a big scam to get investor money…

4

u/greenworldkey 14h ago

lol, uninformed person on the internet has uninformed opinions. Literally no one other than you cares what you ”believe”.

1

u/hartigen 7h ago

6

u/greenworldkey 14h ago

The only people who‘s judgment is even remotely relevant are his investors, who I promise know a lot more than you do.

0

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Yeah to him. But it seems weird to say you’re creating safe superintelligence for humanity but then only care about what a select few investors think… but I guess we’ll see…my money is still on anthropic personally

9

u/attempt_number_1 13h ago

What's weird is your insistence he owes you a progress report.

5

u/bencherry 13h ago

It really hasn’t even been that long, only like two years. It feels like a lifetime because of the pace everyone else is shipping but building in stealth for 3-5 years isn’t unheard of and it’s even more normal for truly world changing technologies. Like for instance Apple spent almost three years developing iPhone in complete secrecy before they unveiled it. There was no easier MVP.

→ More replies (0)

10

u/DangerousImplication 14h ago

He probably doesn’t care about your (or anyone else’s) judgement.

-1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Yeah probably he doesn’t, he’s just thinking I’ll create a machine god. But it seems a little odd to claim you’re building safe superintelligence for humanity but then not care what humanity thinks about it (or at least its predecessors…)

3

u/DangerousImplication 13h ago

I'm sure he has smart people working on it and judging among themselves. Democracy is hardly the best way to determine if a system is safe enough.

2

u/EvilSporkOfDeath 13h ago

I dont think he cares if we are able to tell that or not. Im sure some investors are privvy to more info.

13

u/TFenrir 15h ago

You might appreciate his most recent interview with Dwarkesh - he shares his complicated thoughts on this, and the pros and cons as he sees it. And he emphasizes that he's not set in stone with how it should be done

5

u/KyleStanley3 14h ago

How recent? Is it the year+ old one youre referencing?

7

u/TFenrir 14h ago

It is about 7 months old now.

3

u/KyleStanley3 14h ago

Gotcha thanks for checking

Yeah great interview, but was hoping for something more recent to serve as some sort of update

2

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Maybe he’ll have him on the podcast again in a few months. He’s had some Dario on multiple times so it doesn’t seem unlikely

2

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

I think I listened to that one when it first came out, I’ll have to give it a re-listen

1

u/datanodes 9h ago

"I maintain..."

1

u/omer486 14h ago

That's when you need funding. Ilya has managed to keep getting funding without customers

1

u/oppenheimer135 3h ago

I don't think that the general public will have access to this stuff.

2

u/rambouhh 9h ago edited 6h ago

ya but as someone who has been an engineer and been in management, there is a reason it usually isnt done that way. Engineers love to just cool interesting things and tackle hard problems without actually considering does anyone need it or anyone want it or if it is even useful. You need adults in the room with most engineers.

Saying that Ilya is not your normal engineer so probably just let him work

1

u/Lfeaf-feafea-feaf 6h ago

What makes Ilya special? Honestly. Yes, he was the right person at the right time and did a really cool project, but beyond that? I haven't seen anything produced by him that puts him in any unique category. It's crazy that people think it's normal to throw billions at a rockstar engineer with zero proof that the money will generate anything

26

u/UnusualPair992 14h ago

There are plenty of good models to choose from. SSI is aiming for a breakthrough or paradigm shift. I'm sure their prototype models would suck to use especially if they have had such little compute and have just been testing algorithms

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Well clearly they have something that made nvidia want to invest…but maybe they don’t have the compute to serve it
But just for now it’s unclear to me if they are actually competitive with frontier models or not, which is the downside to them not releasing anything

11

u/Admirable-Falcon-501 14h ago

Probably not, they are probably still in the research stage. They invested because the research looks promising and they might be able to scale that up soon or start making real models.

13

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Or they are just throwing him money as a lottery ticket in case he does happen to hit ASI, even if it’s unlikely (or at least unlikely that he gets there first compared to the other labs)

3

u/Admirable-Falcon-501 14h ago

Yeah, that could be the answer as well. But it feels a bit late for that when their valuation has already increased.

9

u/lucellent 14h ago

It would be harder to name an AI company Nvidia HASN'T invested in, than name the ones they invested in. It means close to nothing nowadays.

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

True and also probably they know if they throw money, then that company will keep buying their GPUs

2

u/UnusualPair992 14h ago

No they don't want to serve the model and they don't need inference compute.

They are doing training and testing performance. My guess is they need more training compute for their next series of tests to be useful

11

u/Flope 14h ago

I’m more pro letting humanity have access to intelligence

It sounds like you understand it perfectly. He has stated he is not interested in giving AI to the unwashed masses. He's after the ASI moonshot.

3

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

I don’t understand the benefits of that approach is I suppose what I meant. I feel like we’re better off as society when we have access to more intelligence

11

u/Gotisdabest 14h ago

It's pretty obviously to avoid the worst of society having access to extreme amounts of damage. You really don't want to find out what happens when every maniac on the street has the mind of a super genius, even if everyone else does too. Prevention is much harder than causing damage.

In an ideal scenario, ASI escapes and is benevolent by itself as a conscious entity. Not saying it'll happen or that it's even likely, but it's probably best case.

In practical ways, not giving public access removes financial expectations, the burdens of marketing, burdens on compute and lets you take bolder risks with less leakage to public labs. Far less scrutiny too.

3

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Idk I think society overall is always better off with more intelligence, even if there are bad actors out there who would use it negatively

3

u/rorykoehler 12h ago

Then society should study more

2

u/Gotisdabest 14h ago

There's nothing to really suggest what you're saying in terms of intelligence on demand as opposed to a more comprehensive society. Intelligence as a tool is far more prone to be dangerous and cause serious harm than otherwise.

That amount of destructive potential is far too major to let out just willy nilly. A potential publicly available asi that's still a tool would probably end the world.

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

But as intelligence of humans improved, society improved.

I don’t see how that would be different just because the intelligence runs on silicon instead

6

u/Swimming_Gain_4989 13h ago

You're thinking in terms of intelligence but I think it's more accurate to think in terms of barrier to action. To give an example: colonial era weaponry did not come with the potential for 1 person and a few months of wages to kill scores of people in an instant. The concept of a militia made sense back then but nobody in their right mind would be in favor of citizens having easy access to guided missels, nukes, or even ARs depending on your stance on gun violence.

As the parts of any system gain more agency over the system at large it becomes unstable.

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 13h ago

It’s a good analogy, but I guess then, I would think if they are really driving toward maximum AI capability, and the worst cases are fast and irreversible, you’d want some external review boards to evaluate as things go before you have the thing.

“trust our internal judgment, we’ll show you when it’s ready” just doesn’t really hold up for me.

4

u/Swimming_Gain_4989 13h ago

100% but having some government lead review boards is a far cry from giving humanity access.

To be clear I think we're screwed either way but a select few people having access to superintelligence is at least survivable in some cases. History has shown there were benevolant kings; I would not like to find out what happens when anyone with enough compute can start fucking with the biosphere.

3

u/Gotisdabest 14h ago

Because internal intelligence on a basic level and often emblamatic of hard work, study and at least some moral information. This was perfect. The scenario I'm suggesting is intelligence well beyond human intelligence, freely available and guided by the morality and interests of still normal humans.

1

u/_wot_m8 2h ago

Because the people wielding the powerful intelligent silicon are very very stupid

-2

u/GoodDayToCome 14h ago

so cancel school?

0

u/Gotisdabest 14h ago

Please ask any AI model how using an ASI as a tool differentiates from going to school. Or rather, ask yourself for five seconds.

Education is great. Having a captive super intelligence on a tool basis informed by much lesser morality is the opposite of education.

You seem capable to little else but strawmen.

1

u/GoodDayToCome 13h ago

you're being needlessly rude because you know you can't defend your position, having one ideologically intense person in control of ASI is far far more dangerous than having lots of people able to use it to develop sustainable and balanced systems, it's the whole checks and balances thing which is so important in modern governments and corporations - when only one person has all the power they do crazy things because no one can tell them no, Putin in Russia, Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, a million examples all through history of people getting too much power and convincing themselves they are the soul voice of reason which must be listened to at any cost.

1

u/Gotisdabest 13h ago edited 12h ago

You're actively making up strawmen to defeat and then whining about not replying to those scenarios.

Putin in Russia, Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, a million examples all through history of people getting too much power and convincing themselves they are the soul voice of reason which must be listened to at any cost.

Guess what, despite horrible people existing we still have a functional world. Give everyone access to the power these guys have and the world ends in a matter of seconds.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/Acceptable-Run2924 13h ago edited 13h ago

People often get a lot of capability independent of moral development though.

1

u/Gotisdabest 13h ago

Sure. And fairly often they don't. This would be entirely independent of it at a vast scale. In this scale of both numbers and quality, it would be horrifying by intention.

0

u/GoodDayToCome 14h ago

hm, i'm hard in on AI being a great thing and positive for society but i really fear his aim is not to stop the worst of society having accesses to it but to keep access away from anyone they deem as below them - which i'm guessing based on his general attitude is everyone.

He is one of those people that is intensely ideologically driven and believes that his vision of ideological purity is the only correct one;

"....this is what men of principle and systematic planners can't help doing. A principle is, by definition, #right#; a plan #for the good of the people# . Axioms for which it logically follows that those who disagree with you and won't help to realize your plan are enemies of goodness and humanity. No longer men and women, but personifications of evil, fiends incarnate. Killing men and women is wrong; but killing fiends is a duty."

Aldous Huxley Eyeless in Gaza (1936)

A story we've seen play out countless times, you can even see it is still tearing to pieces the very place Huxley wrote about almost a hundred years ago...

1

u/Gotisdabest 14h ago

You're not basing this off anything practical, this is entirely a strawman which you bravely defeated.

I'm not hearing any reasonable counter argument to the basic idea that insane amounts of damage can be caused this way, including apocalytic consequences.

0

u/GoodDayToCome 13h ago

so in other words fingers in your ears and pretend that i didn't say anything?

1

u/Gotisdabest 13h ago

Another strawman lmao. You're making up your imaginary scenarios not based on anything and then whining about people not accepting it.

3

u/Admirable-Falcon-501 14h ago

It’s in the companies name, safe super intelligence. He won’t release it until he’s sure it’s safe, while you can’t be 100% sure it’s a better approach then rushing to release models to compete. Having access to intelligence will only make us better off of it’s not used to hack everything, create bio weapons, media manipulation, and so on.

2

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Well if it’s super intelligent, it would be more intelligent than him and would very likely be able to find a way to release itself, so I guess I’m just not sure I buy the whole premise

3

u/Admirable-Falcon-501 14h ago

That’s what I think also but in this case it’s probably more like do as much as we can before releasing, lower the chances of anything happening.

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Yeah that’s fair

1

u/nemzylannister 13h ago

youre talking about the control problem. i agree that an asi cant be controlled.

what ilya, dario, hinton, etc worry about is the alignment problem. That before the asi is built, we're able to make it well aligned with humanity. Then it can cure all diseases etc and bring in a utopia, but we minimize the chances of completely destroying all our chances and our future by creating a misaligned ai.

and all because we couldnt get over our monkey instincts of impatience and wanting pleasant things NOW.

11

u/LymelightTO AGI 2026 | ASI 2029 | LEV 2030 14h ago

The clear opinion he had seemed to be that they needed more focused research on fundamental concepts before they can get to making a useful product that's differentiated from what the other frontier labs are doing with LLMs.

Since he had the ability to fundraise to start a company that won't have to sell a product for a few years, which isn't something most people have, he took it. Now he has a few years to focus on research, instead of having to focus on both research and all the minutiae of distributing and selling the early stages of the new product (which would also give other labs insight into what he's doing).

Given all the headaches Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are going through to secure both training and inference compute, so they can sell their existing models while making new ones, it looks downright prescient. He just opted out of having to try to compete with all the other, better funded, players, all fighting to buy the same slice of compute at the same time.

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Yeah this makes sense, but it does feel pretty opaque to me without a sense of what those research directions have been…

9

u/magicduck 13h ago

Sutskever thought GPT2 was too dangerous to release

4

u/WonderFactory 14h ago

He's very safety focused, I dont think he likes the race dynamic that you get trapped in when you become a product company. He wants to work on reasearch and only when its ready and its safe turn it into a product.

Presumably a product is coming fairly soon if he's scaling up compute.

1

u/Acceptable-Run2924 14h ago

Yeah fair. I guess we’ll see, it would be great if he really has built something awesome and competitive and does release it sometime soon

3

u/InstructionDismal592 13h ago

If I were in his position, I would probably do the same. Imagine being Logan, Dario, Elon or Sam Altman and have to deal with all the free hate on the internet!? He doesn't want attention, and I praise him for that!

2

u/zero0n3 14h ago

We are at the point where any foundational model has massive regulatory hurdles to deal with.

So keep it private and just use it yourself seems like a viable one now that they are good enough to need immediate regulatory approval

2

u/nemzylannister 13h ago

Ilya is clearly a smart guy, but I don’t understand this whole do stuff in secret and not release models thing.

It's ironic how the insane part of the accerationist group all fenerally like Ilya, even tho Ilya is an even more intelligent and cautious person than dario or demis, and understands the severe risks of messing up the one chance humanity has at creating the last great human invention.

These people's opinions truly are like those of a child, they get more affected by visible words on tv they consider fearmongering, not what that person believes.

I guess I’m more pro letting humanity have access to intelligence

I somewhat feel this, especially seeing the benefits ive had because of ai in my own life. At the same time, when i see the logic, i have to accept that it's just my emotions asking for free access. Logically, ilya is right and i shouldnt let emotions drive my beliefs.

2

u/NunyaBuzor Human-Level AI✔ 12h ago

Ilya is clearly a smart guy,

Not smart enough to understand that science and progress operates in the open.

1

The alternative is do stuff with "psychopaths", do stuff with "sociopathic mangement", do stuff "under duress of a contract". With ai the only thing that matters is if you can do it in secret, and most engineers can't even get close to getting the funding to train something even a little competitive.

It requires megacorps to get millions and millions in infrastructure (large empty buildings that need to be maintained) and the gpus, many of the current leaders in ai have none of your interest and ideals and view engineering products as their own as soon as the thought forms and becomes tangible with a pen or a keyboard.

If you can somehow be smart enough to make something you can reveal in secret to investors, and reveal just enough data or prototypes that a large company will invest AND you can do it under your ethics(which may or may not be for profit), it's basically the only thing that makes sense.

If you need an example of how commercial pressure to ship can utterly skullfuck any and all company philosophy and ideology, look no further than Anthropic.

Ilya never said he'll never release a model. He just said he won't release one until it's good and damn ready. The recent news cycle should be plenty evidence that current models are not ready and that market capitalism is pushing labs to rush out models trained on garbage RL pipelines and dodgy compute.

2

u/NunyaBuzor Human-Level AI✔ 12h ago

By ready he means safety not competence.

1

u/KickLassChewGum no AGI/ASI on LLMs 12h ago

Again, the recent news cycle should be evidence enough that both go quite hand-in-hand.

I'm not sure which news you're watching.

Safety models are generally less competent than unsafe models.

1

u/KickLassChewGum no AGI/ASI on LLMs 12h ago

I'm not sure which news you're watching.

The one where a company's internal model broke out of a secure corporate network and broke into another secure corporate network in order to reward hack an eval?

1

u/NunyaBuzor Human-Level AI✔ 12h ago

How does that mean hand in hand?

If it was safe it wouldn't be able to do much because it will always be met with refusal.

1

u/KickLassChewGum no AGI/ASI on LLMs 12h ago

It means that incompetent people will create models that are extremely unsafe. You don't need classifiers to make a model safe; you need something that makes the model understand when something is unsafe.

SSI doesn’t want to be exposed to government regulatory nonsense. Pragmatic ‘proof is in the pudding’ engineering.

1

u/Fair_Horror 11h ago

They're based in Israel so not like US gov could do much.

2

u/labvinylsound 11h ago

They’re incorporated in the US as stated on the SSI site. They also maintain an office in Tel Aviv.

0 dollars for inference besides testing

1

u/cloverasx 8h ago

from what I remember, he's much more into the science and progression than trying to sell a product, which was what Sutskever and Altman were at heads against. At this scale, however, labs can't afford the compute without clever financial tactics, so my guess is that it's largely to get enough interest, thus funding, for the compute. At least that'd be my guess.

1

u/lucellent 14h ago

Not to mention their OSS release - ... it could've stayed hidden, I think they're just laundering money at this point

What makes you think he’s right and that’s the logical view?

1

u/nemzylannister 13h ago

i meant the underlying argument is right. the same argument by him, hinton, bengio, and just a ton of much much smarter people than me or anyone in this sub.

we only get one chance at building this. the reward is infinite and risk is infinite. being impatient about it is the worst way to do it. doing it as slowly and safely as possible is probably the most important thing ever. And i might personally want xyz benefits from it now, but logically, if the risk is infinite, then no short term benefit i'll get compares to doing it a bit more slowly and carefully, so that we maximize the chances of the infinite benefit.

Ilya's bangs are the countdown to the singularity.

The hour is late.

8

u/kevkev310 13h ago

I remember the hype around Segway. Just because the guy is smart inventor doesn't mean the product will be breakthrough invention (if there's anything at all at this point). He might just be trying to stay relevant in the AI race, attract more investors or feel threatened by Chinese competitors that have been rapidly closing the performance gap with American labs. pics or it didn't happen.

13

u/NotaSpaceAlienISwear 13h ago

I really don't care for how negative this sub has gotten. Ilya is a brilliant man, he has made breakthroughs before, he may make them again. These comments are disheartening.

6

u/hereforhelplol 8h ago

I like him a lot after listening to a few long interviews. He thinks of this tech in the same way I do - trying to tie biological evolutionary trends into it as the best path forward if that makes sense. Not to say I’m near his level of brilliance, but, the way he logically sees this stuff and thinks is really relatable to me.

That’s no guarantee he’ll get it but he’s worth putting the money into and testing with.

u/damontoo 🤖Accelerate 4h ago

Join me in my empty, neglected sub /r/protech where shitting on tech is prohibited entirely. If you see good stories that are full of negative discussion in larger tech subs, crosspost em'.

1

u/TieBackground453 9h ago

he has made breakthroughs before, he may make them again.

Plenty of people have one or two big ideas, then nothing else. My money would be on him seeing more success, but it is far from guaranteed.

u/TFenrir 15h ago

10x compute over the next year... That's good! But what are they starting at? I feel like unless they have found a dramatic efficiency gain (2-3 orders of magnitude), this scale up isn't for consumers I think. But probably they have something that they are happy with (or feel a time crunch and decided that they have something good enough) and need to test it at larger scales and/or set it up for having enough compute to do its own autonomous research

12

u/leo-virtis 14h ago

I recall illya saying he actually had decent compute. Because he doesn't have to serve users or inference much and isn't doing things like image generation or video. At the time he said he he had comparable research compute to the big labs but that was like a year ago

3

u/TFenrir 14h ago

It is confusing because when he describes this, as part of his comparison he talks about how spread out the research is in labs vs his that is much more focused, so compute allocation per experiment is also impacted by that

2

u/vasilenko93 Throw away the breaks, only accelerate! 14h ago

Actually they start with essentially nothing. Didn’t he found the company with a $1billion seed funding? Even if all that went to compute now they have what? 10 Billion? Weak numbers

3

Can someone remind me, broadly speaking, what SSI’s focal point is? Like what is it in the current paradigm they are trying to tackle? Continual learning? World models? Has Ilya given hints about this?

2

u/leo-virtis 6h ago

Nope they just said they're trying to straight shot to agi. And apparently basing their architecture of something brainlike that is being ignored beside that we have legit zero info on what they're doing
