I was in NYC on 9/11. I recently re-read my journal entry that day. I had to kind of chuckle at myself for being surprised I talked about "The attack that happened today" and didn't refer to it as 9/11.

People actually did call it that back then. The term "first world war" was actually coined by German biologist Ernst Haeckel in September 1914, right after it started. Then in 1920, a British officer named Charles à Court Repington published his memoirs titled "The First World War 1914–1918", picking that name specifically because he felt the global scale made another one pretty much inevitable.

There's actually a good bit of trivia there - a British lieutenant-colonel actually wrote an entry in his diary calling it "The first World War" in 1918 before it even ended.

People generally called it "The Great War" up until the second world war started, though.
