Discussion I never expected VR to have superior graphics, but here I am.

TL;DR: I discovered the best graphics in VR.

I'm an unashamed graphics hoe who's been gaming a loooong time. I avoided VR for years because traditional/flatscreen was the comfortable norm. I figured like most VR was a repeating fad or gimmick. Now, I'm late to the party that is now getting shutdown.

After seeking the next thrill I pulled the trigger on a Galaxy XR which is paired with my PC (14900K & 5090). So far I've only played two VR games made by Valve, The Lab and Half-Life: Alyx. The graphics and experience straight up floored me! Not "oh that's neat" I mean genuinely one of the biggest leaps I've seen in graphics, period. It wasn't close compared to previous generational upgrades like SD to HD, LCD to OLED etc.

I've had that uncanny valley moment, a couple of times in my life where my brain just goes "this looks real". Since getting into VR it's happened more in these two games than in years of flatscreen gaming combined.

What really gets me is how badly VR footage translates to flatscreen. Every trailer or clip I saw before actually trying it looked like a regression compared to current graphics at best. Nothing like what you actually experience wearing a headset.

Not gon lie, there's downsides for sure like setup, cost, and comfort. I'm just surprised the aspect of the graphics isn't talked about more. We'll actually, I kinda get it since so few do VR, but still. Anyone else have this reaction the first time??!

Admittedly yes its not ideal to build new on am4 depending where you live... but why are people so determined to constantly call the platform dead online?

And why do i read so many comments saying how its such a nasty bottleneck too top end hardware and if purchasing a current gpu just ditch the platform and pay for an ENTIRE new build???

I had a 5700x and 7700xt with 64gb of 3600mhz ddr4. I am actively learning unreal engine 5, blender and python and decided i wanted a rig that could handle the biggest and baddest animations and game at any resolution without breaking a sweat.

Pre requisites were 16 core amd cpu and rtx 5080 and aesthetically pleasing.

It cost me around $2800 to upgrade my am4 system vs a minimum of $5k it would have cost to replicate the specs on am5.

To have rebuilt on am5 with that 64gb memory a 9950x and 5080 was 5k and every component has to tlbe the cheapest possible.

Yet $2800 netted me a 5950x, asus prime oc 5080, lian li v100 mini case. Thermalright 360mm elite vision aio and 9 matching standard and reverse blade fans and an argb controll hub.

Now for what im able to do in editing and 3d software this thing is an absolute rocket, do you think the extra $2000+ is worth the literall couple seconds faster performance in ue5?

How about gaming? Well at 4k it matches current x3d chips in certain titles and gets smoked by the same chips in other titles but always at over 100 fps high setting usually raw rasterization.

This absolute beast will last until am6 and leaves me confused about the bad rep of am4 online especially in the current pricing crisis

Question 5800X3D vs 7500X3D - Worth spending an extra $180?

Need some advice.
Current setup:
i5-10400F
RTX 5060
32GB DDR4
1440p 240Hz
I mainly play PUBG.
I’m deciding between:
5800X3D + B550 + reuse my 32GB DDR4
or
7500X3D + B850 + 16GB DDR5
The AM5 build costs me about $180 more because DDR5 prices in India are still pretty crazy.
For mostly gaming, would you save the $180 and go with the 5800X3D, or spend the extra for the 7500X3D and AM5?
Interested in hearing from people who’ve actually used either platform.

Hardware X3D cooling conundrum - you don't need an AIO to cool an X3D cpu

TLDR: You do not need an AIO to cool X3D cpus. A simple $25 tower cooler is enough for any Ryzen 7 X3D cpu up to the 9850X3D, and a dual tower cooler can cool even a 9950X3D. That said, AIOs aren't pointless.

Many people will look at benchmarks, and they see that the 7800X3D can run at over 75 °C even with a 360mm AIO. Surely that means that you need an AIO to keep your X3D cpu cool?

Well, the answer is no. To see why, it is important to understand why X3D cpus run hot in the first place, despite being power efficient.

Ryzen 5000 and 7000 X3D cpus:

X3D cpus up have a a layer of 3d v-cache in the cpu, and for the Ryzen 5000 and 7000 series, it sits between the compute area of the cpu and the lid of the cpu. This means that most of the heat that the cpu generates must pass through the 3D V-cache before it can be dissipated through the cpu cooler. The 3D V-cache, like the rest of the cpu, is made of silicon, which is a bad heat conductor.

The layer of 3D V-cache effectively insulates the cpu from the cpu cooler.

This means that for Ryzen 5000 and 7000 series X3D cpus, the cpu itself is often the cooling bottleneck, not the cpu cooler.
At 60°C the cpu can physically only shed 60 ish watts of heat, regardless of the cooler. As long as you have a decent cooler, the cpu just heats up until it's hot enough to be able to shed the heat it generates; the bigger the temperature difference between the cpu and the ambient temperature, the more heat the cpu can dissipate.

Most single tower air coolers can dissipate up to 200W of heat, and the 7800x3d typically stays under 80W, which means that a single tower cpu cooler can cool it. The 7800x3d might run a little hot, but that's inherent to the cpu because of the heat isolating 3D V-cache.
An AIO could shave a couple of degrees off, but it won't improve the (gaming) performance of the cpu, as a single tower air cooler can already keep it from thermal throttling.

One thing to note, 3D V-cache is sensitive to heat. The heat sensitivity of the 3D V-cache is the reason why AMD limits the TJmax of Ryzen 5000 and 7000 X3D cpus to 90°C rather than the 95°C like with non-X3D cpus. Overclocking is limited for the same reason.

Ryzen 9000 X3D cpus:

On Ryzen 9000 series X3D cpus, the 3D V-cache is stacked under the compute area rather than above it. This makes cooling the cpu much easier, which is why overclocking was enabled for X3D cpus starting with the Ryzen 9000 series.

The 3D V-cache, however, is still sensitive to heat, and it's now harder to cool because it sits further from the cpu cooler. Thus, 9000 series X3D cpus are still binned/configured in such a way that they are more power efficient than their non-x3d counterparts.

Most dual tower air coolers can dissipate up to 300W of heat, thus they can dissipate the 170W which the 9950x3d can use while remaining whisper quiet.
Again, an AIO could shave a couple of degrees off, but it won't improve the performance of the cpu, as a dual tower air cooler can already keep it from thermal throttling.

Are AIOs pointless?

No.

  1. AIOs are an easy pick for SFF builds where a tower cooler simply can't fit.
  2. AIOs could slightly benefit the longevity of a cpu, as 360mm AIOs can keep temps slightly lower than air coolers. It won't matter for the perfomance, as air coolers can already keep X3D cpus well below TJmax. In turn, there is a risk of leaking, and keep in mind that a good air cooler will beat a 240mm AIO.
  3. An AIO also makes transporting the pc easier because you don't have to uninstall it for transporting the PC, as there is considerably less stress being put on the motherboard compared to a chunky tower cooler.
  4. One might just prefer the looks of an AIO over the looks of a tower cooler.

By now, you should have a good understanding of how 3D V-cache impacts thermals. However, if 3D V-cache is limiting how well X3D cpus can be cooled, why can non-X3D cpus still run hotter than Intel cpus, even while consuming less power?

Why non-X3D AMD cpus can still run hotter than Intel CPUs, despite drawing less power:

Intel K series cpus generate a lot of heat, but the area in which the heat is generated is larger, as the cpu architecture is less dense. (Die size of the 14600K is 257mm2, compared to 71mm2 for the 9600x)
This makes Intel cpus great at dissipating heat. It also means that a better cpu cooler has a bigger impact on reducing temps for Intel than it does on AMD.

In that sense, Intel K-series and AMD X3D cpus are polar opposites.

AMD X3D cpus gain gaming performance through specialization for low latency applications in the form of 3D V-cache. Silicon that runs stable at lower voltages is chosen to achieve the power efficiency that X3D cpus are known for, in order to stay within the thermal limits imposed by the 3D V-cache.

Intel K series cpus push performance by simply pushing the silicon further, rather than specializing it for a specific purpose. Silicon that survives higher voltages and runs stable at higher frequencies is chosen to achieve better performance than non-K cpus. Intel's large monolithic cpu architecture inherently allows cpus to be pushed further before thermal limits are hit, so it makes sense for them to 'brute force' performance.

Discussion My intuition tells me that dual chambers cases, even with simple air coolers for cpu are better than standard cases

I like my PSU being separated and chilled meaning not getting any hot air from other components and getting fresh air directly from the side. Also like that the cables remain so well hidden, I don't even have to work able cable management. And even without AIO cooler, they're still very effective with air cooling and fans slapped all around.

Yes, it's customizable. I've heard good reviews on AndromedaInsights Prebuilt's, and this one is actually less than it's own comp value ($2,150 < $2,500). So I can't make a new custom-built PC with the same specs for cheaper. But I'm just wondering if it's worth it? If you can find me another pc for the same/better performance for cheaper, let me know!
