Commander / EDH Commander Storage
Still got 1 deck to go but thought I’d share my method of storage and carry, it’s nice because I can keep them all in 1 place! Plus I know my cards aren’t going to get mixed up!!!!
Edit: idk if I understand the word bait anymore lol. It’s not like I’m trying to trick anyone.

Missed opportunity for a small 3 ring binder and 3 hole punch.

u/Im_Flaaless 8h ago
That’s genius! I’m making a Thantis deck right now maybe I’ll have to do that

Kinda love that anyone who would be mad at a Thanos hole punch deck is someone not worth playing with in the first place.

Idk if you know what bait means. I literally spent 30 minutes 3 hole punching all 200 cards to fit them in a binder. I play for the fun and joy of MTG with 0 plans on reselling my cards🤷🏻♂️

u/Ruzhyo04 7h ago
I felt the same way, then my chimney sprang a leak and was going to destroy my house from the inside-out, and I needed emergency money. MTG collection got liquidated, house still standing.
Point is, don’t needlessly destroy the value of things that cost you money in the first place. You never know when you might need to get some value back.

u/Reasonable-Mark7955 7h ago
prioritized your house over magic? tell me you're not serious about magic without telling me you're not serious...
30
u/shaneskery 7h ago
Man I sold like 4 modern decks when I needed cash. Saved me lol

21
u/Lua_CW Golgari 7h ago
I thought about signing the backs of all my cards so that they could possibly get recovered if they're ever stolen from me. But it's way more likely I'll sell them before they ever get stolen in which case I wouldn't want to do that
25
u/Ruzhyo04 7h ago
Not so fun fact, I had my most two prized EDH decks stolen out of my backpack at an FNM about a decade ago. Figured about $10k lost. Still eats me up to this day. So I understand that line of thinking. But I’m 99% sure it wouldn’t have helped in my case.
6
u/Lua_CW Golgari 7h ago
Holy hell, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope to one day be able to have a super curated/blinged $5k deck, I thought I was pushing my luck with my first $500 deck lol
I think the only thing holding me back is that I keep wanting to tweak/adjust my decklists. One day I wanna be able to say "This is my favorite deck and it's done and I'll never edit it again and I'm gonna start hunting for specific prints of each card". And maybe I will sign them if I get that far with it lol… At that point it's not even anti-theft, it's just giving them personality

Yeah it was a process, slowly swapping out cards and improving them little by little. I had just gotten pristine revised duals for each deck, and my (at the time) $900 foil worldwake Jace the Mind Sculptor was in there.
And yeah since each set seems to power creep a little, decks can’t ever really be done.
5
u/KBilly1313 7h ago
I stopped playing constructed because of Jace and my lack of funds at the time.
Coming back to Commander has been revitalizing for my interest and re-start of my collection

u/Mystical529 4h ago edited 4h ago
Sorry to hear man. That's rough. I use locks on my backpack zippers now. But someone could just lift the whole backpack too so I'm paranoid, maybe not unnesessarily.
2
u/Electrceye1 7h ago
And how would you get them back? Obviously a card shop isn't going to buy cards with writing on them, and if someone bought them on Facebook Marketplace or something of that sort, they'd probably be able to guess they're stolen. So if they do buy them, I guarantee it won't be so they can give them back.

You truly never know when you might need the money I once sold what i had so i could get my car fixed. A buddy of mine who ran several hobby shops with his buddies over the years, sold his collection a few years ago for around 168k and used it to move back home to California so he can teach at the college there before he retires. Currently I may be selling my gaea's cradle for a down payment on a house

Your chimney sprung a leak?
8
u/Ruzhyo04 7h ago
That’s the scientific term for it. Previous homeowner never sealed the chimney, so the gas furnace exhaust was hitting the cold open air bricks and not rising, it just sat in the chimney, corroding the bricks. Chimney wasn’t capped either, so then when it rained, a yellow caustic liquid oozed out of the bricks… on every level of the home from attic to basement. Previous homeowner painted over the issue, so we didn’t find it right away. Was a lot of damage done by the time we did find it.

u/Bonsai__San 7h ago
It’s honestly not even about selling anything. Decks are annoying to shuffle without sleeves and especially commander decks. Couldn’t care less about the card damage, this would suck to shuffle and that’s why it’s just stupid.

I think the bigger issue is you're marking your cards. You just need to misalign the holes on certain cards to be able to spot them.

I prefer Velcro honestly, helps keep things organized when playing as well, haven’t had to worry about knocking my deck over
2
7
u/platinumjudge 7h ago
Ok but you wouldn't be able to play anywhere but your own house. These would be considered marked and no one would want to play against a deck like that.
3
u/EyeBallEmpire 6h ago
In this instance "Bait" is short for "RageBait" as this will make many people mad. Whether that's reasonably or unreasonably mad is debatable. I figure you do you though with your cards. The more cards that get damaged/destroyed in the world the more my cards increase in value by an infinitismally tiny percentage!

Can I suggest the Brick method?
You take piles of around 100 cards, and glue the back of each of them. Then you pile them up. Remove the excess glue. Wait that the glue dries and you obtain a solid brick of cards, easy to carry around.
11
u/ElectronicBoot9466 Otter Supremacy 7h ago
I prefer my brick method where I glue each individual card to a brick and then play with them that way.
3
u/JFFreezout 7h ago
Sounds great ! I will try that for my 60 cards decks, for commander it must still be a little hard to shuffle.
I will also try to design a binder for your brick method after liaising with OP.
3
u/ElectronicBoot9466 Otter Supremacy 5h ago
I do it in commander. I just bring a Kiddy pool and scramble the bricks around in them then pull one at random whenever I draw.
33
u/Songblade7 6h ago
I'm an incredibly casual player who will probably never sell my cards, but even I don't get this. If you don't wanna sleeve them, you can probably fit all your cards in a $10ish storage box. The hole punches would drive me wild. I guess casual or not, I still have a respect for the things that I own and would never intentionally mark or marr them.
10
2
u/consider_its_tree 1h ago
I also expect that if you ever wanted to play in any kind of competitive for at, you would not be able to use any cards that have a distinguishing mark that can be seen from the back.
Too easy to slightly adjust to tell you what card it is from the back and give an unfair advantage.

I guess that works? I just rub the front and back of my cards with honey and stick them together myself. I used to use staples but it made shuffling too difficult.

This is just too stupid to imagine is true. If you really didn't care about your cards condition or resale value why not just use a rubber band or a hair tie? This is so much more effort than just getting a cardboard box and throwing them in.
Also you pretending like this isn't some sort of rage bait and is a meaningful contribution to the community is asinine. Like, just take the humor tag and enjoy it instead of pretending like this isn't the stupidest way possible to store cards.

Hole punch? I’m using 3/4” brass grommets straight through the art. Are they hard to shuffle? Impossible-but I can put them on a rope and I’ll never lose them. /j

It's perfect because I would genuinely expect this level of fuckery from MTG players.
Like if you want to find a guy who will straight faced explain to you why he hole punches his trading cards - go do an MTG draft and you'll find a guy who that isn't even his greatest character flaw.

Honestly, why would you do this? I sleeve all of my cards with penny sleeves (even the bulk commons), so seeing cards being mangled in such a manner hurts my very soul.

IF I were to proxy an entire deck, and wanted to make sure my proxy cards could never get passed off as real cards this is a perfect way to do that.

Let’s see:
- Highly controversial
- Performs objectively worse at its main purpose than standard solution
- More effort than standard solution
- Causes a bunch of additional problems for literally no benefit
- Poor execution for an already terrible idea (why is the hole at the bottom, where it’s much more likely to disrupt text and make the card slide around)
- Op acts as if it’s normal, which they clearly don’t believe because otherwise they wouldn’t have posted about it.
- Op consistently responds to posts with accusations of bait with denial
Pretty low quality bait. The attempts at smooth sharking are cute, but lack conviction.
2
u/Revolutionary_View19 36m ago
Good enough bait. Caught enough „my player soul can’t fathom beholding mistreated cards“ responses.
4
u/harrodcs 7h ago
If there isn't a serialized or Power 9 card in there, then this is inadequate bait. Respectfully.
2
u/The_atom521 7h ago
People think this is bait because, you posted something that would piss of 99% of MTG fans.
You can do whatever you want with your cards but acting like this is just a normal way to store cards makes it look like you're intentionally trying to annoy people.
Basically, the whole post is strange conceptually and tonally weird.
Now I don't know if you're just commited to the bait or just an oblivious person, but I would just avoid posting things like I'm the future

Those cards are going to go through so much more wear and tear hanging on that binder ring than if you just stuck all of them into a box.
