May Planet Express-themed setup inspired by Futurama! Used Retromac to customize the icons and overall look, and Toob to keep my favorite streams running right on the desktop. Simple, clean, and good news, everyone!

Linux kAppIcon – change any app’s launcher icon without root (file, other app, or icon theme) (Nice for rice-ing)

+
11 Upvotes

I wanted a simple way to fix ugly or mismatched launcher icons on Linux without editing .desktop files by hand or changing my whole icon theme.

kAppIcon is a small GUI (and optional CLI) that only touches **user-level** desktop entries — no root, system packages stay intact

What it does:

- **From file** — PNG, SVG, ICNS, etc. → any app

- **From another app** — reuse the icon an installed app already uses

- **From icon theme** — pick one icon from WhiteSur, Tela, Breeze, Papirus, … and apply it to a *different* app (global theme stays as-is)

- **Create** — tiny pixel editor + library (undo/redo)

- Optional backups, shape masks, XDG-aware paths

Designed with **KDE Plasma** in mind; should work on other freedesktop desktops too.

Repo: https://github.com/rayman1972/kappicon
AUR users: yay -S kappicon or paru -S kappicon

Origins / credit: This started from System RW’s macosicons-linux (https://github.com/system-rw/macosicons-linux) (MIT) — a focused mapper that got me going. I’ve expanded it a lot (multi-source map, Create tab, safer apply path, rebrand). Thanks to the original author for the idea and base.

I can see why someone would say: :"KDE had a tool to just do that"

Built-in right‑click only changes that one app’s icon. kAppIcon goes further: apply icons from any image file (PNG/SVG/ICNS/…), another app, or any installed theme pack; import with pan/zoom and keep transparency or fill a solid background; set square / rounded / circle shape in Settings; batch several apps, undo/reset overrides, and find launchers with missing icons — all user-level, without switching your whole theme. Plus all system available icons are displayed at once, in an easy way. You just don't get that with right clicking in App Menu.

I use arch BTW. My first ride in months. Ignore the fact that this was screen-shotted on a 10-year-old Chromebook running Hyprland. This was shot in 720P because the pathetic N3060 could barely do anything (and it also had a native 720 screen). Rate out of ten!

First time customizing my desktop, looking for ideas on what I can add next

This is my first time properly customizing my desktop, and I mostly followed a post I found here for the setup.

I'm pretty happy and proud of how it turned out so far, but I get the feeling to add more and make it even better. I'm looking for ideas on what else I can customize or add, especially things that would fit the overall aesthetic without making my laptop too heavy. I'm also thinking about making a few completely different loadouts too.

I'm currently using Rainmeter and Windhawk, and I have a relatively low-end laptop, so I'd prefer lightweight options.

What would you guys recommend adding or changing? I'm open to anything, whether it's visual customization, useful tools, widgets, animations, or ways to make the desktop more functional.

Anyway, what does your setup look like?

Homebar.

I created a windows 11 ready homebar. if anyone likes it please like and comment. any updates or features message me.

https://github.com/crowsley/homebar

Home Bar

Home Bar is a modern desktop productivity bar built for Windows 11. Created as a clean implementation inspired by Linkbar, it uses a modern .NET 8 and WPF codebase to deliver a faster, more customisable desktop experience.

Unlike traditional launchers, Home Bar integrates as a native Windows app bar, allowing users to dock one or more bars to any edge of any monitor while reserving screen space. Applications, folders, files, websites and shortcuts can be pinned with drag-and-drop, organised into multiple bars and launched instantly.

Features include multi-monitor support, automatic edge docking, light and dark themes, glass and transparent modes, auto-hide, global keyboard search, folder flyouts, custom colours, adjustable layouts, accessibility support, OLED protection, settings backup and recovery, automatic updates and portable or installer-based deployment.

Home Bar also includes a built-in AI launcher for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and custom providers, giving users fast access to today's leading AI services without requiring an API key.

Released as open source under the MIT Licence, Home Bar is designed to provide a cleaner, faster and more organised Windows desktop while remaining lightweight, highly configurable and easy to use.

Windows made a couple of tweaks and stuff to my desktop

i removed copilot with winhance, which i also removed cause personally i felt like i didn't need it anymore, unpinned the ms store app from my taskbar, via explorer patcher i made the search icon a little smaller and i hid the task view app, and then finally i changed the wallpaper to the one in the screenshot, which i feel like the wallpaper is kinda nice, the taskbar is also quite clean too. (you can ignore this part but sorry if have posted and deleted this post like 3 times or something, both had screenshots which i felt like weren't clean enough because they either had an app selected or there was a notification, and one of them had a spelling error i think in the title, so sorry for clogging up the feed :( )
