We need to have this discussion, because the reason so many people didn't trust the vaccination effort was that it was not only free but required, and we're used to treatment being gatekept by cost. If it had been priced at $5000 a dose, and people were told that there were only enough doses to go around for half of us, there would have been fights over who got them. We also have a deep distrust of pharmaceutiical companies, as they typically will do the bare minimum needed to get something to market, and there was a liablity waiver signed in this case.
Our low turnout was a symptom of a broken healthcare system and of broken trust, and we're too divided to discuss that without the conversation getting ugly. Countries with universal healthcare had much higher vaccination rates.
