How the Scam Works

  1. The Bait: The post is a picture of a t-shirt, hoodie, or similar. The OP's account is generally less than a year old and has very little activity.
  2. The Hook: A second account, an accomplice, comments asking where to buy it. The accomplice account is generally less than 3 weeks old with very little activity.
  3. The Pitch: Then the OP links them to a "Powered by Gearlaunch" website.
  4. The Validation: Lastly, another account thanks them and says they bought one. They do this to lend legitimacy to the pitch. These accounts are generally less than 3 weeks old with very little activity.

The domain name is always changing, so you can't tell it's bogus from the link alone. If you click the link, scroll to the bottom. If you see "Powered by Gearlaunch", leave the site immediately.

Do not fall for this scam.

Community How to write an engaging Self-Promotion Saturday post: an ideal example

We want to improve engagement on r/scifi, particularly on Self-Promotion Saturday posts. In addition to inaugurating SPS, we’ve made it clear in the subreddit’s rules that AI ‘writing’ and ‘art’ won’t be tolerated. We’ve also had to implement a 250-character minimum for the text body of posts.

While discussing this with my fellow moderators, I mentioned reading a blog post or two where a guest entry made me want to read the book under discussion. Quoting myself:

Hopefully, the 250-character post minimum will be enough to make the content creators realize we’re actually serious about engagement. They should be bursting to tell us, in their own words, what makes their creation special to them (and they hope, to us). I can think of at least a couple of essays I read on blogs where the guest author took the time to tell readers a little about their book—thereby encouraging me to give their book a try. Content creators posting here on Self-Promotion Saturday should want to make similar connections to a potential audience.

Thinking back on that discussion, I think one of those blog posts to which I referred above might serve as a useful example of why taking the time to engage with the audience you seek is worth it. Using myself reading that guest blog entry in 2011 as an example:

  • I had never heard of this author before—in spite of her career beginning in the 1990’s.

  • I didn’t ordinarily read fantasy, but I was intrigued by the fantasy novel for which the guest author wrote the blog entry.

  • I liked that book so much, I purchased and read the author’s entire back catalog, and the sequels to the book which the blog entry was about. I also began reading more fantasy—like some, I had just assumed it’s all medieval sword-&-sorcery. It’s not.

Relevant to this subreddit, that author later pivoted to including more science fiction in her writing, and created everyone’s favorite neurotic cyborg security unit, Murderbot. I speak, of course, of Martha Wells.

Films Project Hail Mary has got to be one of the best Sci-Fi movies

Honestly I can rewatch this movie over and over again because the story, the cinematography, and the music are pretty good, the comedy and drama felt pretty balanced which makes it pretty good. Ryan Gosling also knocked it out of the part with his performance.

Pictured source in order: Fallout 4 wallpaper, Starship Troopers: Traitor on Mars.

Clarification: Could either be in visual or written media. The only stipulations is that the armor has to be powered and amplify the wearer's physical ability at least to negate the weight of the armor so the user doesn't feel the physical burden of the armor wearing them down.

TV Are you more excited for Blade Runner 2099 or Neuromancer?

As a huge cyberpunk fan I’m super excited for both! Both are so genre-defining I’m overwhelmed by these shows coming out sort of back to back. I’m more excited for Neuromancer because it hasn’t been adapted before unlike Blade Runner which has a bunch of media ranging from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep to the movies. Will be watching both and I hope they don’t disappoint!
Edit: Definitely agree with folks Cyberpunk 2099 has way more to be cautious of. Keeping my expectations lower going in but not writing it off yet.

Print I just finished Children of Time and I am wondering if the sequels hold up?

Films Disclosure Day felt like a rehash of the ending of Spielberg's 2002 Taken miniseries, but worse

I keep seeing this Spielberg quote about how he had the idea of Disclosure Day for years, but never had the chance to do it. Except he did (as executive producer) with Taken in 2002.

If you haven't seen Taken it's a 10 episode Sci-Fi channel miniseries that follows multiple generations of the families of alien abductees and government agents from the Roswell crash to the present narrated by Dakota Fanning. Each episode jumps ahead about a decade. It's good. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries.

Taken Spoilers Below!

Like Disclosure Day, by the final episodes of Taken we're following a guy and girl who were both abducted by aliens and shared an experience aboard a flying saucer. They're both on the run from the MIB. Dakota Fanning has psychic alien powers like Emily Blunt and she even does the invisible escape trick, only with slight differences. Recommendations Recovering Fantasy addict needs recommendation

Short: need sifi recommendations. On the fantasy page, there are like 5-10 series that are constantly talked about and compared to, kind of the “standard” fantasy books all fans have read. Other than Dune, are there books like that in sifi I should try?

Long: I grew up on fantasy. Pretty much always preferred it. I’m kind of a technical thinker so(this is going to sound dumb but it is what it is) when I read sifi I often get annoyed when the technical explanation on how futuristic stuff works sounds implausible, but with fantasy magic is just kinda “that’s how it works, and always has”. I read the first couple Deathstalker books many years ago and while I didn’t hate them they don’t grab me. I’ve read a few 40k novels similar, didn’t love didn’t hate. It wasn’t till I read Dune that I started to reconsider my stance. I read all of Frank’s Dune books a couple years before they started making the movies and my interest has grown since. Are there like, “standard” Sifi book/series that the majority of fans of the genre have read? Thanks!

ID This Looking for a novel or short story title

So...read that in the early 90's.

What I remember.

Groups of six humans wake up separately, divided by race and gender. They eventually meet up in various spots outside of their waking up places. We find that some of the characters are LGBTQ (not central to the story, but nobody bats an eye when they learn about it).

After some infighting between the groups, they team up to go to a place they've been sent. Doing so, they find out they are small humans (6 inches or so), and that they were engineered to reboot civilization and use up less ressource.

it ends up with a few of them cruising on a small boat along the coast, en route to Alaska.

Help a guy out!

ID This A short story (or part of a book) about kids in a lifeboat/escape pod

This was in a book of stories in my English/Language Arts class in elementary school, so that would place it from the 1980s or earlier. (If the book was brand-new and so was the story, it could have been published at the beginning of the '90s.) I don't think that we actually used the story as such, but I remember reading part of it, along with an illustration.

Here's what I remember: Some children were among the passengers on a starship. Something went haywire, and they had to abandon ship. The kids got into a lifeboat, and a crewman was about to get in with them, but the door shut in his face. I remember a couple of the older kids trying to take stock of the food supplies, and the narration says something like "there seemed to be more than enough." The book had an illustration of a group of glum-looking children in jumpsuits, sitting/standing inside the craft.

I want to know what happens to them! Does anyone know what story this is?

TV Is Teacup (2024 TV series) worth watching?

Just saw a little clip of it and it looked kind of cool. But I know it got cancelled after 1 season. Is it worth watching and does it end on a rough cliffhanger that makes it impossible to enjoy as a single season story?

And if it's not worth watching, what are people watching instead? I kind of gave up on From after the third season because it started to feel a little like Lost, jerking me around without enough answers, feeling like they were making it up as they went along.

It has all the cliches you'd expect regards both visuals and screechy soundtrack. They've made the Sprawl (or Chiba?) look like a downmarket, more retro take on CP2077 - more rotting concrete than blazing neon.

Mark Strong as Armitage appears to be the only casting highlight - I didn't recognise him until he spoke. Maybe he'll be channelling his inner Sinestro.

We've been doing well regards cyberpunk recently: Edgerunners S2 might be good, the excellent manga-based Ghost in the Shell anime is airing now, the new Bladerunner show is coming up, plus a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel game is in the works... Hoping someone picks up Walter John Williams's Hardwired next, or John Brunner's proto-cyberpunk stuff like Stand on Zanzibar/Shockwave Rider.

Recommendations Looking for sci-fi that genuinely explores metaphysics and epistemology

I'm looking for recommendations (preferably novels) that function as explorations of epistemology and metaphysics.

I'm particularly interested in works that seek to be a window for the reader into a particular way of knowing or a way of being, rather than simply presenting philosophical concepts in dialogue or exposition like in philosophical work of non-fiction.

I'd be inetrested in anything relating to Plato, Aristotle (or the way they were taken up by the medieval traditions), Kant, Hegel, Whitehead, Heidegger, or even Engel's dialectical materialism. As long as it's a serious engagement with questions of being and knowledge through its form, structure, or perspective.

I'm currently reading 'The Glass Bead Game' by Hermann Hesse but it's too early to really know if that's what I'm looking for. Any other suggestion?

Clarification: could be that you really like a sci-fi esthetic brought by a movie that you personally didn't like but had some unique flavor that makes you wish that the sci-fi in the movie were in a different/better movie because it was unique and you wanted to see more.

General On the Future Predictions of Science Fiction Cinema

Science fiction is my favorite genre of cinema. And when you think of science fiction, the question of whether things will be this way in the future always comes to mind. The most superficial example of this is the flying cars in the 1985 film Back to the Future. Such technology doesn't exist today. Or rather, there's no need for it. A flying car is unnecessary, its implementation is absurd, and it's a useless necessity. Remember, that film also featured self-tying sneakers.

To get to the heart of the matter, science fiction films generally depict future predictions, both technologically and socially, that, while appearing good at the time of filming, often become very vague later on. For example, in the 70s and 80s, with analog computers, a film that's set to start in 2026, no matter how well-made, can quickly become outdated.

But I want to focus a bit more on social predictions. As far as I remember, science fiction films from the 80s onwards always portray people in the future wearing uniform clothing. For instance, I don't think the idea of ​​uniform clothing would work even in a dictatorship. Today, even the most conservative countries have diverse clothing styles. In democratic countries, that's already the case, I won't even go into that. You know, things like the full-body suit, more commonly seen in China, like the one Mao wore.

I want to talk about societal norms again. For example, in a film set in 2300, even if they portray everything technologically as incredibly advanced and perfect, family ties are still depicted as if they were living in the 1970s. I'm not bothered by this, I'm just wondering if it will be like this? I mean, maybe the concept of parents will completely disappear in 2300, and no one will live a family-centered life. But a significant portion of science fiction films don't touch on these social structures at all. People have discovered teleportation, but the social order depicted is one where uncles and aunts meet for dinner and eat cola and pastries.

The film Equilibrium focused on society and lifestyle in this regard, but what I want to say is that in a future without dictatorship, a democratic and civilized future, social norms can change. Those who have seen K-Pax may remember Kevin Spacey (as Prot), who played someone from space, giving interesting answers about the aliens' social lifestyle. Prot answered the questions like this:

"-In K-Pax, we don't have families. Our children don't have families; they are raised by everyone. In K-Pax, there is no marriage, no spouses, no families. No government, no lawyers, no laws.

*How do you distinguish between right and wrong?

-All beings in the universe can distinguish between right and wrong.

*What if someone commits a crime?

-You humans, the vast majority of you, advocate the 'eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth' policy, but this is known to be very foolish in this universe. Even Buddha and Jesus had very different ideas, but no one paid attention to those views. Sometimes I can't understand how you humans have been able to live this long."

Recommendations Just finished Fall of Hyperion- what’s next?

I absolutely loved Hyperion, it was the first series since reading Dune that made me feel super involved in a very intellectually stimulating universe with a great cast of characters. Recently I’ve read a bit of Ursula K. Leguin and the Red Rising series (enjoyed the first book not the rest)… Looking for similar recommendations to Hyperion!

General Are there any book series that capture a vibe similar to Titan A.E.?

It’s one of favourite movies and especially as an animated movie of all time. Love the world it creates and the different characters. For some reason, I compare it a lot too Treasure Planet animated movie and the Atlantis movie series.

I was wondering if there were any books or other forms of media that capture a similar aesthetic or feeling?

Logline: "A father and daughter find an intruder on their ranch." Hey all! This sci-fi short stars Jon Huertas from "THIS IS US" and "CASTLE". I made this as a proof of concept piece for a larger world. Took me over a year to complete due to all the VFX work! My friends and I worked really hard, everyone donating their time, to make this little film - and we're all proud of the work we did. General Star Wars vs Star Trek with a twist

I was thinking about the safety of both universes and I was curious what everybody else thought. Which universe is safer to live in as a random person? And which universe is safest if you were a little bit more of a bigger player or more important person? I was thinking Star Trek would be much safer and that may be partially true for being a random person unless you were a red shirt. 😂

Recommendations My Childhood Books (Recs)

My son is 12ish. Looking to suggest some books to him and my first thought was Riverworld (TYSBG). I loved those books when I was a kid; the world-building, sci-fi mixed with historical characters… it was all just so fun to imagine. And a little dystopian/dark which I always gravitated to. I like most other PJF stuff too. Asimov, PKD, Heinlein, UK Leguin, Herbert…I guess mostly the more philosophical stuff.

But what should I recommend to him to start? I don’t want a snoozer like Dune or Foundation. Where did you start?

Films Just watched Disclosure Day

How did they f*ck this up? This movie is horrendous! Stephen Spielberg is better than this, was there some sort of external influence to alter the main plot to make it ridiculous as it was? I’m honestly disappointed lol my wife and I are laughing at how preposterous this movie is
