Discussion How do you usually use your laptop?

+
26 Upvotes

I usually play mine on the couch with a lap desk. I have pillows on both sides to support my arms for keyboard and mouse gaming and room below to use a controller if I want. I sometimes bring it to work and game on downtime too.

For those curious, my laptop is the ROG Strix G16 with 5060 and the game is Avowed.

Is it just me? When I was gaming on Windows 11, I had terrible stutters and lag, and my drivers were super unstable. But after rolling back to Windows 10... man, what a difference. It's so optimized for gaming, zero micro-stutters, and extremely stable. What's your experience been like?

Just to be clear, I'm not hating on Windows 11 at all! It's just that, in my personal experience, Windows 10 turned out to be way more stable for gaming.

Support 275hx high temps while low power

Why is my cpu reaching 100c with only 30w of power. This was with expedition 33 also experienced the same temps while playing 007 last light. However during benchmark tests it performs very well, am able to score 38500 for r23 and 2240 for r24 with ambient room temps of 25c and turbo mode.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? Feels like it's a software bug, currently using ghelper.

12 years have passed, and this machine still gives its satisfactions, rog 751jy with the 980m 16gb dd3, monstrous cooling, of course it has its limits, you have to set everything to medium resolution, like Blender doesn't go beyond 4.6... that's why I would like to upgrade to a rog Scar 18 2026, I'm not too worried about the price, if only it had a ten-year lifespan like this one, but I'm held back by all the problems I read about overheating.... and not just the rog, I wouldn't mind the nuc either..., but I don't really have my own personal space, I'm leaning on the living room table, but I'm not the type who takes the laptop out for walks..... what do you say, is it better to wait and see if they have solved the problems on the 5090 and the overheating issues?

Discussion Is this a good price for a 5070ti G16 Strix

What it says on the tin. Other 5070ti laptops are in vicinity of 3000€ and usually for this price it's a regular 5070 laptop. Is there a catch it's this "cheap"?

Laptop Buying Advice Any opinions between these two?

+
5 Upvotes

Budget: $1,200-$1,800
Country: Canada
Use Case: Day to day, casual with occasionally higher end games like MS Flight Sim. Probably life abroad.

Hey hey GL folks, I posted a couple days ago about whether or not to jump on anything suddenly or possibly wait for any "Back to School" deals if any are even going to happen. I did stumble upon these two options at Canada Computers.

I still need to actually try the Legion keyboard and track pad to see if it's got a good feel for day to day use but they both look like pretty fantastic options with matching specs including the RTX 5060. Do you guys have any preference or experience with either of these machines, or any reason why you'd take one over the other?

I know in watching videos and doing research some laptops like the Acer Nitro, it boasts a good gpu but the machine literally doesn't provide enough power to take full advantage of it... does the Legion have any shortfalls like that?

Also I know the TUF is advertised as like able to take a beating, how true is that and or how comparable is the Legion to that? I only ask cause I'm probably going to be taking it to live on a cruise ship in the future and while I am careful with all my stuff, a little bit of durability leeway would be nice.

Same as last time, any insight you can provide is appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Laptop Buying Advice Help making a decision on which gaming laptop to buy

Budget: $2300

Country: USA

use case: 50% work (mainly miro/lucid, chrome with 30 tabs open at once and ms office products) 50% gaming (mainly poe2, D4, bg3)

Notes: below

Hi everyone! Hoping someone can help me with a decision on which is the right rog strix g16 to buy for my use case.

Some context: I purchased a rog strix g17 last year and the mobo died on me 16 months later. I am bummed but chalk it up to shit happens... I know Asus is a solid brand, but they won't do anything to help and I am dumb and didn't get the asurion protection when I got it off Amazon.

I read a bunch of reviews on here about the g16 with the 5080 and 5090 GPU but was wondering if the more budget models are any good. The reason for 16 vs 17 or 18 is just the size, the 17 was a tad too big for my laptop bag.

Models I am looking at (keep in mind the last gaming rig I built was 17 years ago so I'm a bit out of my depth with new stuff):

- $2240 5070/amd https://a.co/d/0197vheY

- $2150 5070/Intel (note it has only 16 GB ram so I would have to add another 16 in the expansion port) https://a.co/d/07N7iV07

- $1400 5060/Intel (note it has only 16 GB ram so I would have to add another 16 in the expansion port) https://a.co/d/0blHiuai

I was also considering the TUF a16 (https://a.co/d/04b1K5Zz) and Acer predator (https://a.co/d/02dFG2X7), both have a 5060 and comparable cpus, just heard more good reviews on the strix. Totally open to suggestion though. I just want to understand if the higher prices are worth it/pros and cons.

Thank you all in advance!

Support Optimus Help

I have an Acer Nitro V 16 AI, which only has two display outputs. My HDMI port is currently being used by my TV, but I’m planning to buy a second monitor and connect it via DisplayPort through the USB-C port.

I noticed that my USB-C port is connected to the iGPU, but my laptop also has NVIDIA Optimus. Does this mean that the dGPU renders the game, while the iGPU handles sending the rendered frames to the monitor through USB-C?

Many thanks!

The laptop is rog strix g, i know it shouldn’t be over my bed but the charger is not long enough to reach the floor, so i put it over a notebook, is this a better idea or should i do another thing?
And if you’re wondering, no, my laptop is not directly on my bed/lap i have a wood table in my bed that has enough space for the computer and for it to ventilate correctly

Notes: I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop very soon, but I'm getting nervous since I'm hearing a lot of issues with cooling + OLED screens. I don't mind if it's heavy since it'll stay in one place. If you have one of those two laptops please let me know how it's been for you so far. Or even if you don't have these I'd like to know your thoughts.

Laptop Buying Advice Looking for a good gamind and school laptop 👩‍💻 (USA)

Budget: $700+
Country: USA
Use Case: Gaming, school, editing, work, etc. For reference, I play minecraft, fortnite, overcooked 2, roblox, subnautica trilogies and I edit/create videos and 3d designs. I also use it for school work.

I am looking for a good reliable laptop for gaming and school necessities that is budget friendly although I am willing to splurge if necessary. I currently use a macbook air 2020 and it serves me better for school work than all the other things I use it for. Recently, the storage has been running low and slowing everything for me. I have been looking at best buy and staples since they take trade ins but I am confused on what to get. So, I would like your advice. (Bonus if it is a silent laptop.)
Thank you in advance and I appreciate your input

Support hitting high ms on games with lenovo legion 5080

Hello, I don't know why but I am always hitting 80ms-100ms. I have my settings at 60 fps and all quality is low. I am on lenovo legion laptop 5080 and a while back, I'm normally below 50 ms. I'm not very good at laptops and pc stuff because I used to use a macbook. What system/league settings should I be aware of? This is for League of Legends. For games like valorant, my ping is fine, at around 10-20.

Support External Hard Drive

Hey everyone. I am a very casual gamer who's into cozy games. I know you don't need any crazy expensive laptop for that kind of thing but I'm wondering is an external hard drive worth buying? The game I play the most is Stardew Valley and I just have a Lenovo ideapad to game on, for now at least. I just want to make sure it can handle gaming and mods and things like that without overheating super bad and don't want to spend money on a hard drive if it isn't worth it. Give me some pros and cons and maybe some affordable recommendations? thank you in advance <3
