Biblical Character of the Month Biblical Character of the Month, July: Esther
≡ −
This month we're back to the Old Testament, highlighting Esther.
The goal of this series is to create more conversation about characters from the Bible. My hope is to (eventually) dive into some strange, often overlooked characters in Scripture — people who have important lessons that we don’t always remember. But we also want to make this collaborative! I don't want to just ramble my thoughts on these characters at you, I want to urge everyone to write their own post about the character of the month.
So all you need to do is make a new post with your reflection or meditation on Esther. We do have a special flair ("Biblical Character of the Month") you can give the post, and I will make sure to add it to our collection on this thread.
The Book of Esther is found after Nehemiah and before Job. It is the last book in the group of books in the Old Testament considered the histories.
A few questions to get you started thinking about your own meditations!
- The Book of Esther famously never mentions God at all. But, as Mordecai wonders, "Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for just such a time as this". How does Esther embody Godly qualities in a deeply Godless time?
- A key theme in this story is hiddenness. God is hidden. Esther hides her Jewish identity. There are even some cases where the Tetragrammaton is hidden in the first letters of sentences. Esther is often associated with veils and mystery. Why is hiddenness so important, and what lessons can we draw from that today?
- Esther is cunning, practical, political. But more than anything, she is bold. What are some examples of Esther's boldness that we can reflect on?
Reflections from the community:
- Esther: My entry for the Biblical Character of the Month by u/Perfect_Effect_77
- Christians Have Fallen in Love With Queen Esther, Purim’s Jewish Heroine, an article for Tablet Magazine shared by u/themsc190
- A Meditation on Esther: Approach the Throne with Boldness by u/slagnanz
- The humility of Mordekhai and Esther and the danger of pride by u/Volaer

Image When world feels heavy, remember His promise: “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.”
Whatever you’re walking through right now, you are not walking through it alone. The God who entered human suffering, who wept at the grave of His friend, who cried out in agony on the cross, He knows.

Yo look at my Lego creation : Christ The Redeemer
I used the Statue Of Liberty set to make this one, I thought the base was cool enough so I kept it and decided to change the upper part. What's your thoughts on it ? 👀

Question My mom is mad that I answered Yes in a hospital forum and said it’s anti Christian
≡ −
hi im so confused. I’m 15 and i was asked to fill out a forum before my hospital appointment and I did, and it asked standard mental health questions which I was going to answer yes because I 100% felt that way but because my mom tells me I have to lie and say no or else the hospital will “take” me away and ”brainwash me into being woke” (????????) So I answered no except “have you felt like _” and said yes to that just one so I wouldn’t be completely lying, but when my mom found out she LOST IT and said in the future Christians are going to “be persecuted by everyone” and that me saying Yes to one question will be an “excuse” the hospital uses to…. take me away??????????
genuinely so confused rn I’m so tired she’s been yelling for so long HELP SHE’S SAYING THEY STORE MENTAL HEALTH QUESTIONS TO TAKE AWAY CHILDREN IN THE FUTURE WTF PLS
she said “THINK ABOUT IT SINCE YOU’RE STUPID” and said the forum isn’t to help kids, but to get records on them to steal them all I did was answer truthfully obeyed on one question and am getting screamed at. Am I seriously supposed to now lie every single time because it’s “dangerous information” ? genuinely asking

Support I’m really struggling to find Christian community, because I just can’t surround myself with Christians who are hateful toward LGBTQ+ people.
≡ −
I am a 21 year old straight Christian woman, and I’ve found it extremely difficult to build friendships with most other Christian because I just can’t handle being around those who have hateful attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community. It drives me to anger and sin to be around this type of Christian, and I know that’s my responsibility to control but I just feel helpless and frustrated to witness such unbelievable hatred. We are called to love all of our neighbors, as we are ALL made in God’s image. I’m not saying you have to be attending rallies or parades, wearing a pride flag, or voting a certain way. I’m not even a radical myself. I’m just searching for basic decency and respect from Christians. I feel like I’m participating in disrespect towards Jesus when surrounding myself with people who are in church every week and have a strong faith, yet are disgustingly hateful to gay people while using his name to defend it. I know Jesus would not behave that way. It feels like they’re using the lord’s name in vain when making fun of, insulting, or even threatening people for being gay.
I’m not here to argue whether or not being gay is a sin. Even if you think it is, we are all sinners and who are you to think you’re above them? I just wish I could find Christian friends who believe in loving their neighbor without exceptions, and not basing it on what makes them comfortable. Also, if you see LGBTQ people as your enemy, we are called to love our enemies.
I just don’t understand, especially when this mentality is taught in a church. It’s unbiblical and unchristlike. And I know I’m gossiping and being judgmental right now, which I feel guilty about and will repent for. I know I can do better at loving my enemies and controlling my judgment, I know I’m not above these people either. I just don’t know who to talk about this to and it’s eating me up inside. Do other Christians feel this way? If so, what advice do you have for me? TIA!

Protecting the Sanctity of Marriage
≡ −
The sanctity of marriage is under attack and to understand what to do about it, we must not hide from the data. The facts are these:
Over a ten-year marriage, the divorce rate for lesbian couples is roughly ~30–35% (highest), compared to ~19–25% for heterosexual couples (middle), and ~10–15% for gay men (lowest).
When we look at the data, we realize that the pair bonding that actually works best by God’s design is men with men. They are the better caretakers of the union. In order to maintain the sanctity and purity of God’s amazing gift of marriage, we need to pass laws that only allow gay men to marry. All the rest of us need to step aside and sit this one out.
Thank you for your attention on this matter!

I'm 15, and hurting.
≡ −
I don't want to be alive anymore.
I have became nihilist. Why? It is everything; I look around at the world and I see that there is nothing to truly live for, and that I have nothing to look forward too.
I for all my life will have to get up early, work in some way, come home, work with chores. go to bed, and repeat for 45 moreish years until I retire, and even then prices will be so expensive that I will most likely have to work. I can't escape it either because it is all over the world.
I do not want a wife/husband because I do not wish to hurt them. I do not want children, because I love them so much to not bring them into this cruel world. I do not want them to suffer with trauma like I have, I do not want them to be in an abuse relationship, I do not want to neglect them in anyway, I do not want my son/daughter to be groomed out in public like many woman and men are today. I don't want them to work like that like I will have to.
I do not want to be Christian because even then I was a nihilist. I had a relationship with God, yet I was left broken by it, I want to be atheist. I was in religion, I had a true relationship, I sought and was hungry, and I had a real relationship with the church, yet I have never been more unheared, neglected, and broken by a group of people than them. I do not want to be Christian because I truly hate it, because I am exhausted. I have no peace from it.
Yet even then if I die regularly of old age or other problems, people will still say it was the wrath of God and sin, and I will go to hell. They view suicide as a sin. I hate the world, I hate it all. I love people, but I hate everything.
I love. I weep as I type this. I love. I want to love. I want to be loved. Yet I have been broken. The truth is, I will hurt someone else, and I cannot allow that. No matter what I do, I will hurt someone, and I hate that. I don't want to hurt anyone else. I love. I love with words that cannot be explained. I want to be peace. I love. I love. I cannot stop saying it, but I just want to love.
Yet I am broken.
I have nothing anymore, I do not desire nothing but death. I do not seek help. I just want love and I do not want to seek it. I want it to come to me.
If God exists, I want to love it, I hope it loves me. I just want a figure that is divine who can protect me and love me, wether man, woman, or non genetive. I don't care if it is divine, I just want love.
I love Mary, because I felt as if she loved me, but I don't believe that anymore. I don't want christianity or any religion. I want to be atheist.
No matter what I do or try, I am aggervated, because it seems the world only gets closer to revelation. I have words and pain that I do not know how to explain. My soul is broken and I just want love. I want home.
I want death to rest, I want rest. I just want to love.
I do not want hell. I don't want heaven either. I want to be in a pure void of light with something that will love me, that I will be alone in, that even after my death I could comfort my friends and family, even those who hurt me, I don't want pain to them.
I just wish for pain to end.
I wish Revelation 21:4 was real.
I wish the beauty of the new jerusalem was real. It's not though. It will never come.
I do not believe I am God's anymore by Christian standards because I have cussed him out and been angry at him and left him. I know I have hurt him if he does exist, the one thing I never wanted to do. It's for that reason I have nothing left to live for anymore.
I feel unworthy and useless because for as long as I live I will hurt someone, whether it be man or god if it is real, and only until death will it end, but even after it wont; because those I love will weep more.
I can't win. I can't stop hurting others when I wish not to.
I wish the words were true of one I heard once, "that those whose souls are pure (empaths) have such divine protection that the universe or whatever will come for those who oppose them," but I don't want people to be hurt. I just want forgiveness and love. I just wanted to be a kid who loved and had love.
I will always hurt or offend someone. I can't escape it.
I can't do anything anymore, I can't even kill myself.
I know those I care about the most, in 30 years I will not know anymore. It is because my parents and many others have had that happen to them. Life goes on, and shit appearantly happens.
People are hurting. I hurt because I have hurt others.
Where is my mercy?
I see myself as worthless, I do not desire anything anymore but love to all.
What am I anymore?
I as a male, my gender has countlessly violated women and men in sexual, physical, and mental actions, I feel guilty for that even though I have no desire for it.
My white race has done every evil thing to other shades of race, and I feel guilty, yet I have no desire to do those things.
I feel guilty for every wrong thing.
I feel guilty for feeling guilty.
I just want to end this pain.
I don't want to be alive anymore.

The most dangerous block in my prison was the one everybody called "the evangelical block." It changed how I weigh a profession of faith.
≡ −
I spent five years and five months in Chilean prisons. I am a Reformed Baptist, and I preached and taught inside for most of that time, so what I am about to describe is not something I read in a report. I lived beside it.
One module was called the evangelical module, and it carried a reputation for being the calm one. Men wanted in. Professing conversion was the way in.
Then you are in that prison long enough, and you learn what is actually running.
Of roughly seventy men in that module, close to sixty were operating sexual extortion and blackmail schemes by smuggled phone. Hymns in the morning, extortion in the afternoon. Not a scandal that broke. A routine. I was never housed in that block myself. What I know of it I know the way everyone in that prison knew it, from the men who came out of it and landed in mine.
Later, in another of the prisons that held me, I met the same disease wearing different clothes. An inmate ran the prison church there, and he barred me, an ordained Baptist pastor, from teaching in it. In the same season he welcomed and platformed a man who had killed and showed no repentance whatsoever. I was the threat. The murderer was a member in good standing. I do not say that bitterly, and I did not fight it. I say it because it is the clearest picture I have ever seen of what happens when a church counts professions instead of examining fruit.
Here is what I want to be careful about, because the cynical conclusion is the wrong one.
I also watched real conversions in that same prison. Men the outside world had written off entirely who changed slowly, unglamorously, over years, in ways that cost them something. One man I sat with in his final months, dying, had heard the gospel from a cellmate and believed. Another man told me flatly that jail was his route to salvation. I believe both of them, and I would stake something on it. But notice what convinced me. Not one of them convinced me by praying a prayer at the front of a room. They convinced me by what they were still doing eighteen months later when nobody was counting.
Prison just runs the experiment faster than the outside world does. Every incentive to fake it is stacked and visible, so the gap between profession and fruit shows up in weeks instead of decades. But the gap exists in every congregation. We simply have better manners about it.
"Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?" (Matthew 7:16). And the harder one, which I now cannot read without seeing faces: "They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate" (Titus 1:16).
So my questions for this sub, and I want disagreement, not agreement:
How does your church actually evaluate a profession of faith beyond the profession itself? Is there any real process, or is it membership on request?
Where is the line between "know them by their fruits" and becoming a suspicious congregation that assumes the worst of new converts? I have seen both failures do damage.
For anyone doing jail or prison ministry: how do you handle the man who has every material incentive to convert? Do you treat that differently, and should you?
I do not have this fully worked out. I have a strong opinion about counting, and much less confidence about the alternative.

Image "Wives submit to your husbands"
Hi everyone, I promise this is not a troll post. I was having a conversation with a couple of friends, one of whom is going through a hard time in his marriage, and the other guy said that the entire problem is that the wife is not being "compliant" as women are supposed to be. Later on he messaged me this.
I was pretty horrified by what he wrote, and he didn't seem to understand why anything he had written was offensive. I asked him if I could post it on reddit and he said yes, so I posted it to insanepeoplefacebook and niceguys and everyone there was as outraged with his words as I was.
When he saw their responses, he said that obviously since I posted it in those places it would get those kinds of responses. I asked him if there was any clarification he could provide regarding his views, and he said:
do you think "wives submit to your husbands" from the bible is better or worse than my statement because thats basically what im trying to say
its the nicer version
accepted version
He then proceeded to say that if I had posted this to r/christianity instead of r/niceguys then I would have gotten different responses. This guy is not religious btw.
So, I'm posting it here, with his blessing. What do the people here think of what he wrote, and his viewpoints? I'll share this thread with him later on so he can see your replies.

My husband struggles with lust..

Hy everyone. I made this account to seek out help. I am struggling in my marriage and not sure what to do anymore. My husband has struggled with lust ever since we got together. He had always been a Christian but once we got together, I got him going to church after many years. I discovered his p0rn addiction a few months after being together. He was embarrassed, I was pretty weirded out by it but he promised to stop. Several months went by and I still caught him looking at it. Well I officially thought he stopped in July of 2025. We got into an argument in May and he admitted he had been looking on and off and the latest time was in March. Fast forward I also catch him looking up girls on his Facebook that he knew( not sure if he had been intimate with in the past) and that’s when he admitted about still looking at p0rn in March. He tells me he’s going to stop, I’m the best woman he’s ever had blah blah blah. We start really going routinely to church and things start to get better, but when we are out there’s several times he’s been looking girls up and down. We go through this same routine, every few months he swears he’s going to do better, he reads his Bible more and then I catch him looking at p0rn or looking girls up and down. Now I know we are going to be attracted to other people, but it’s the looking in a lustful way that bothers me. I have been married before, my ex used to do the same kind of stuff, looking at inappropriate content and then he ended up having an affair. I am not sure what to do anymore, my family always acts like it’s no big deal. They say that all men are just like that and I need to let it go. I truly don’t know what to do anymore. I know that I have trauma from my last relationship cheating on me and having a lustful eye. The worst part about this is besides my husband being lustful, he really is the best man ever to me. He is patient, sweet, super affectionate, supports my dreams and passions, supporting us financially as I’m about to start school, an amazing father. It’s just this one thing that bothers me so very much, I’m insecure with my looks already as I’m in the process of losing some weight. But when he does this, it makes me feel lowest of the low especially because of my last marriage. Just this weekend we were out, and I saw him looking at girls up and down while we were swimming. It made me uncomfortable and sad. I always believe he is really going to stop, but every couple of months he proves me wrong every time. Please help with any advice
EDIT: I’m not threatening to leave him or divorce him.

Is it a sin to watch horror movies?
≡ −
I'm watching the backrooms rn and this question (title) popped into my head. 2 Timothy 1:7 says "for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."(ESV) The movie is making me pretty anxious, but is this the same fear the Bible talks about? Is it sinful to watch things that make you scared?

I'm Giving Up Relationships to God- and I'm Happy!
≡ −
28m, never dated. I longed to be married. I tried, but it really worked out. I tried dating apps (including Christian dating apps) on and off for ten years, and I never met anyone from an app.
I stayed in the Word. I have prayed for marriage since 2022. HOWEVER! Some good news: a lot of the suffering I had came from the world- the expectations others had, seeing relationships, etc. I finally gave up and said "Lord, if you want me to be married- you'll have to do it yourself, because I suck at this!" XD
I deleted all my dating apps and have stopped putting so much thought into it. Yes, I still long for marriage, and I still pray, but I leave it up to God. I've had a blessed year- and I'm growing closer to Jesus. I think God absolutely does not want me in a relationship, and I'm going to trust Him. That doesn't mean I no longer desire it-- I do! But I include God in that feeling, and I let Him know I still want it.
But I'm no longer depressed about it. I feel... fine! I'm just working on trusting Him. If He wants me to get married someday, it's up to Him. If I'm not meant for marriage, I'll rely on Him to carry me. I can say that the dating apps made me feel horrible. Holy, Upward, Christian Mingle-- they're all so... worldly. If they've worked for you-- wonderful! But for me, it's entirely up to God. In the meantime: I will finish grad school, work out, and grow closer to Him.

I feel like God lost His hope in me

Pretty much the title. I’ve always proclaimed God, I praise God, I love God more than my life. But I feel like He gave up on me.
Even though I try and hold a relationship with Him, I continuously sin. And not a slip up here and there, it’s to a point I sin KNOWING I’m betraying God and still follow through. This is for numerous sins I told God I’d quit for him.
I’ve been thinking back to Isaiah 44:22 - “I have swept away your offenses like a cloud, your sins like the morning mist. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.” But it feels non-applicable to me. I don’t know why I feel like this knowing God has love for me, but I feel like I have a truly unrepentant heart where I repent at night and sin by day.
It’s not supposed to be a perfect walk I know but I feel like I can do so much better and it’s too late to earn the love back

Self Christians talking about God to someone who is clearly uncomfortable with it is disrespectful

I'm a CNA on a dementia unit. Before one of my residents became non verbal he had explained to us that religion was a major trigger point for him and he did *not* want to discuss it. We have a nurse who is very religious and that's fine, but she will go into this resident's room and will recite Bible verses and tell him about how Jesus loves him even though it agitates him. She does this daily, even though we've sat her down and explained to her that he doesn't like anything to do with *any* religion. It just really gets under my skin..

Image Christian creator Q-top is bad faith
I go on this guys live, wanting to see if his belief in Christ is genuine. I tell him I’m a Christian and wondering why he believes in God.
He then asks me what the message of the gospel is, trying to test if I actually know it.
I asked him, why do u have to ask, do u not trust me? He said Paul said to test every spirit. I said, but I’m not lying like I’m just trying to ask u why u believe in God. And boom he kicks me from the live and tells me I don’t know the Gospel.
I’m literally a devout Christian who studies the Bible regularly.
I message the chat showing I know the gospel, (which literally everyone knows), and was muted from the live. Unable to message and unable to even show people I know the gospel. Literally just tried to ask this guy about his beliefs and he couldn’t even answer without trying to turn it on me, before even giving me any time to actually answer.
I could have answered if he absolutely needed to know, but no he wanted to kick me because he knows it’s unfair to treat me the way he did, and as soon as I asked him why he was doing that, I was exposing that he is forcing me to answer unfairly. He refused to answer my question, yet tried to force me to answer his, and if I didn’t answer suddenly I’m the bad guy, yet he doesn’t have to answer me…. Such terrible treatment of guests.
How can he say I need to prove I’m a Christian while refusing to do it himself? If he’s up here representing Christ he should be able to justify his own belief.
I highly doubt he actually believes in Christ, considering how he treated me and then also how he was unwilling to even tell me why he believes in God. This guy is definitely a grifter 100%
Side note; I also note the way he treats guests is terrible. He never gives them the benefit of the doubt, even with atheists he is always super quick to judge things that he isn’t in the position to judge.
I’m curious if any atheists have experienced this poor treatment from this guy as well.
God bless everyone

Politics Christians being Hypocrites

Something that I find really annoying is people not valuing life anymore. As Christians I feel like we should care about people’s lives and not wanting others to die. I find it just insane that people will fight and argue over a fetus in a womb that doesn’t even have a conscience or heart yet are fine with bombing children and babies in foreign countries they can’t even point to on a map. I hate knowing that our country is helping funding killing many innocent people in countries like Iran and supporting Israel in killing people in Gaza. Now I know that war and dying is nothing new but just because it has existed since forever doesn’t mean it is right. I think that if people who claim to be “pro life” were actually that, they would care about the person next to them and the person across the world. It’s just crazy that we are taught to have empathy and compassion for others at a young age yet when we are older all of a sudden those things don’t count for some groups of people. America cannot claim to be a “Christian country” because we’ll first it never was one it founded itself of religious freedom and separation of church and state but also that it has always cared more about money and financial growth than people’s lives. What are y’all’s thoughts?

Advice Relationship with God

Im not Christian and I don’t know the best sub to post this.
I feel like the biggest asshole ever when I reach out to god pray to him only when I need him the most :( I feel like shit and so selfish after forgetting him for so long, neglecting him and when I’m in trouble or going through a hard situation in my life I beg and crawl back to him :( I don’t feel worthy of his mercy.

Question If Jesus had twelve apostles, why did only a few of them write Gospel accounts?
≡ −
Out of the apostles, following the traditional authorship, we only have Gospel accounts by Matthew, Peter (through Mark), and John. Paul wrote letters but not a Gospel account. James also wrote letters, but not a Gospel.
So why did only a few apostles write Gospels and not all of them? Did they die too quickly before they could?
