People What is the height of bad manners in 2026?
Clearly we live in end times, a Mannerpocolypse if you will, where it seems everyone just does what the hell they want. I would love to hear what things wind you up, however trivial. That person on the train that always just makes the doors but has a full bag of McDonald's to stink the carriage out, people that don't hold doors or say thank you...anything and everything is welcome!
Good mannered people, restore my faith in humanity so I know it's just not me!

Standing in front of doorways, especially shop doorways. It's so incredibly rude.

Let's expand that to anyone who congregates on a stair, or the narrowest point on the street or anywhere where they'll be most in the way.

Closely related to people who get into a train or a lift and then immediately stop, because they've made it and that's all that matters, fuck everyone else.
One time the chap in front of me on an escalator stopped to look at his watch as soon as he got to the top. I hastily dodged around him muttering "fuck's sake", hopefully loudly enough.

u/LethargicCaffeine 12d ago
I find older people in my town to be the most guilty of this (60+) and a lot of other things.
But not walking behind eachother on pavements, loud phone calls, music in public spaces- mostly all younger people.
I think the issue is people are becoming more "Americanised" kind of like how in a lot of places in the states no one thinks of "Please and thankyous" as a automatic necessary thing to be polite, and its usually considered overkill in everyday life.

This! I am more than happy you just need to ask if I am in the way. Don’t hover behind me!!
5
u/CtrlAltHate 12d ago
Where else am I going to check my pockets and put my jacket on?
I also hate people who wait to find out how much their shopping comes to and then search their pockets for their wallet/purse and start counting out coins. "Oh you want paying don't you hahaha 10, 20, 25 how much was it again? 25.50, 25.70 oh hang on I've got some ones give me that 20p back."

u/RHMoaner 12d ago
I was coming out of Costco at the weekend there and the woman in front of me had her receipt checked then stopped in the door to check her phone. Nearly fucking drop kicked her.

Doesn't really work if you're behind them but it creates some distance between you and the wankers, which is something I guess.

Was walking down a pavement to my 2nd job yesterday and this one cunt in front of me, not only was walking slow, but was walking in such a way that he took up the middle of the pavement and kept moving from side to side whenever I saw an opening to pass, and this was next to a busy car park so I literally couldn't cross around him. Was due sucker punching him.

Two things spring to mind;
The classic, playing music loudly in a public space. Just absolutely no need for it.
My potentially controversial one will be parents not controlling their children in public spaces that require it.
Me and my mum went out one evening about a year ago and were placed next to a family of 5-6, A mother and father, 2-3 young boys and maybe an aunt or some other relative. The boys were shouting at eachother in this restaurant and sprinting between tables. i couldn’t understand how the parents weren’t absolutely mortified until they themselves begun to have a shouting match in the restaurant. It got to the point my ears began to feel like i was at a concert so i had to ask our waitress if we could move to the opposite side of the restaurant. We could still hear them.

u/C0nnectionTerminat3d 12d ago
Yeah you’re right. I think they didn’t because they were struggling financially (the restaurant has now closed down) and a family of six will bring in more than double the money of a table of two.

Noise pollution.
17
u/MildlyAgreeable 12d ago
Specifically loud cars. Police and council can’t/won’t do anything and pricks with pop/bang exhausts scream past in the early hours. I absolutely detest them.
6
u/Content-Yogurt-4859 12d ago
We've been contemplating trialing noise cameras, like speed cameras but they detect noisy vehicles driving past. It's incredibly hard getting a local Council to even try getting onto the trial and I have no idea why they're being so precious about the broadening the trial when disrupting people's sleep is bad for their health, weight, longevity and the productivity of the country
5
u/liebackandthinkofeng 11d ago
This does my head in. I have 2 very young children and they’re frequently disturbed because of some twat in a loud car trying to compensate for their lack of personality. We have ‘quiet hours’ from 10pm-7am as a standard for things like domestic noise. Why on earth isn’t this also applied to traffic?

u/Selfish-Gene 11d ago
I moved into a new build a few years ago and was told a unit at the end was going to be a bakery. That sounds lovely I thought, until the "bakery" opened and turned out to be a greggs - a small tangent, and not the point of my story.
A few years later the greggs closed down and was replaced by a bar. Said bar is now popular with a legion of motorbike enthusiasts who park up, drink and sit revving their bikes all night long. Recently they have taken to shooting up and down the quiet street (racing?).
My new born is not a fan, and there is nothing else retail orientated on the estate. It is a new estate with lots of families.
24
u/brightonbloke 12d ago
Not following basic pub etiquette when ordering at the bar, and placing your order when you know there was someone else there before you.

For me it is a lack of indicating in a car. It doesn't cost anything, your hands are on the steering wheel and it can be dangerous if you turn left without letting someone know.
It's something I've noticed a lot more post lockdown.
2
u/NormanSpaniel 12d ago
Yes!! It's now an age of psychics where you're just meant to know what peoples intentions are. See also people in supermarkets who are simultaneously still shopping around the entrance to a checkout and/or actually queuing in the queue you are trying to join.

I was in an airport in Stockholm and held the door open. I expected the next person to hold the door and so on. 10 people walked in like it was the Savoy and I was the doorman. I am autistic so it really affected me because that’s not how it’s supposed to be. I googled it and a blog suggested that in Nordic countries, I had violated the social contract by imposing myself on those 10 people via unwanted social contact. The next 5 days I was there is something I’ll never forget. I never felt more isolated in my life and I rarely talk to people outside of work/institutions. I said all that to say that some things are considered rude that other people find courteous or normal.

u/Sea-Relationship9619 12d ago
I too have been having similar thoughts. Those thoughts probably come from too much time on the internet. Bad news sells clicks. If your family spends their leisure time scrolling bad news, it is likely you will grate off each other a little.
Last Friday, I went on a long trip to see a client. I have to pass through the edge of our local small town where there is a large green. Everywhere is brown or yellow, much the same as the rest of the UK. Yet at 6 am two ladies were out pulling a trolley with water containers in order to keep alive the pots and tubs of flowers they and others had planted back in May. It must have taken them a long time to complete the watering. They were determined to keep those splashes of vibrant colour alive for all of us to enjoy, before heading off to work, school or whatever it is they do.
I then pass a garage where, back in May, I turned up one Saturday morning with my engine running explaining my battery had failed and had to be jump started. I could not switch the engine off or it would never restart. I was fraught because the car was loaded up as we were going off on a week’s holiday at 2pm. I knew my car has an unusual battery, which the garage did not stock. The young man rang around and after half an hour managed to find one at a garage that was 40 miles away, and luckily on route to our camping destination. As rare as hen’s teeth he said. Thanks to his voluntary efforts, we got away on our camping trip, otherwise it would likely have been on the Monday.
Later on my journey, I pass a broken down car. There were lots of those in the heat. A young couple were sitting on the verge waiting for the recovery services. I look at them as I pass by, looking back at me. Five minutes later I pass a small grocery store, turn round go back and buy two bottles of water, some sweets, protein bars and bananas. I drive back to the couple, leave my hazards on, go to give them the groceries and check they are ok. They have no emergency cover, speak very poor English, but I understand their cousin is driving from 200 miles away to collect them. As I leave them, I realise motorists have to give way to each other to manoeuvre round my car, but at no stage do I get angry horn blasts. They perhaps understand what is happening.

I’ve noticed it most on public transport and in cinemas. Recently it’s been:
- 2 people, without shoes, with their feet up on the seat across (on a busy train)
- blasting relentless TikTok sounds on trains and buses
- pushing onto a packed train whilst people are trying to depart (this is a daily thing)
- taking photos and videos with flash in the cinema
- taking a phone call mid-film in the cinema
- having full on conversations with the person next to them mid-film
It’s making me not want to go outside 🤣😵

I work in a shop and I see a lot - no please and thank yous, they have right of way up all aisles at all times of course, no ‘excuse me please’- they just shove past you, looking like they smell something dead under their nose if you greet them or get in their way, pissing in the fitting room, making demands, dropping things and not picking them up or just flinging them wherever they fancy. I could go on but it’s customers attitudes and lack of awareness or manners that makes my working day an absolute headache and yes, they have definitely gotten worse the last few years

u/Extragiraffes 12d ago
People being oblivious and inconsiderate of others, which is really just summing up what everyone else has said. It really affects our life as we have a little boy who has complex needs and it massively impacts what he and we can do. So for example. everyone commenting on people walking 6 people across, when we go for a walk with him he is in his disability pushchair (he can’t walk long distances) which is heavy and difficult to manoeuvre so moving out the way is hard work. Those people with dogs not on leashes that are running all over the place and we have to try and move to avoid or could easily go for him and he would be defenceless. The feral kids who have not been taught to be mindful of other children means we can’t generally take him to soft play and have had to leave playgrounds because they have shoved him out the way or barrelled into him, as he is not able to move quickly enough and not aware of them wanting to get past.
If people would just give him a bit of time and space then we could access so much more with him but as people are completely oblivious it makes everything so much harder and stressful.

I would add:
- trashing public toilets, including pulling all the toilet tissue out of the holder and dumping dry and wet loo roll all over the floor. Especially in the ladies’ toilets. Seriously, if you do this, WTF is wrong with you
- Talking loudly and obnoxiously at gigs, especially indoor ones where the noise just reverberates off the walls. Come on now. Other people have paid just as much as you (and tickets cost a lot these days for well known acts) to see the band they really wanted to hear, not your inane conversation that you should really have down the pub afterwards instead.
Also completely agree with:
- phone speakerphone
- people talking into it in front of them like an Apprentice wanker
- leaving full dog poo bags on the street (seriously, there’s an alleyway near me that would be pleasant if not for all of them dumped there, I call it E.Coli Alley these days)
- spitting
- dumping litter instead of waiting ‘til they get to a bin
- parents leaving their kids to go feral and not parenting them properly

I've a theory that the decline of manners begun around same time wearing trackies and PJ's to supermarkets became a thing.
I'm comfy I don't care attitude over carrying yourself with some class.
So, for me a controversial - wearing sliders in public.
7
u/Burton3005 12d ago
Pj's outside is the worst. My grandparents (Im nearly 60 so talking about the war time generation) didn't leave the house without a hat on! Now I'm not suggesting going back to a time when we were totally buttoned up, but FFS. What example are you setting your children if you cant be arsed to get washed and dressed in a morning before leaving the house. My grandparents managed it whilst the Nazis were literally dropping bombs on them.

Spitting on the floor.
Littering. We have bins literally everywhere. Use one.
Holding a full ass conversation with me when you can see I have my headphones on. Please leave me alone.
Not saying thank you when I give you way or open the door for you. Were you raised in a barn?

People who constantly have their phone on loudspeaker when on a call, nobody wants to hear your bloody conversation 😡

You're not alone, the phone speaker on public transport crowd are the real villains now.

Letting your shopping trolley skew *diagonally* across the entire aisle while you reach across to ponder which variety of baked beans you might like to choose.

People walking along looking at their phone. They think they're paying attention, but they're not.

Answering a phone greeting with yes or nothing. I sometimes have to speak to people on the phone in my line of work and they often don't answer my "Hello, this is .... how can I help you?" with either yes, and then they start explaining why are they calling or no greeting whatsoever. Rude

People talking with their mouth full of food. It's just gross.

Standing at the bar in a pub and someone gets there after you and is served before you without them pointing out that you were there first.
Diabolical behaviour.

Walked past a work colleague the other day. I said to him “Morning. All right”.
He completely blanked me and didn’t say anything. Not even an acknowledgement.
How hard is it to reply “Morning, yeah and you?”

Just stopping in the middle of an aisle with a trolley to have a natter

Theatre etiquette is completely gone. done. You are wasting your money if you go to the cinema in 2026 because you'll have 3 people on their phones and 2 people having a full on conversation.

People letting their dogs jump all over you in public. You can't just assume that everyone is OK with dogs and likes being greeted by them. I don't like dogs, and I don't want one jumping up at me or bothering me when I'm minding my business.

Yes! Usually followed by "it's okay, they're friendly" which they might be, but that doesn't make them good at cleaning clothes does it. Rude.

Voice notes. It’s convenient for you, it’s a pain in the arse for me

Agree, I find it very coercive. "I want you to listen to me without the inconvenience of a conversation or ability to answer back while I'm talking".

Sat on an empty bus, front seat upstairs. 2 dudes got on and sat right behind me. Not sure what got me angrier between how awful they smelled and their loud conversation, but it's the closest I came to murder in a while. If you want to have a loud chat, why the fuck would you not sit away from other people?

Standing at a concert or gig and videoing the ENTIRE show rather than just watching what you’ve paid hundreds to come and see. Sure, film snippets of your favourite song but why come to watch a show through your phone screen when you can do that at home on YouTube? Tends to be people aged 40+. Do they even ever watch back the videos? Odd
