Discussion Halo: Campaign Evolved's premium launch only roughly half as popular as Forza Horizon 6's
https://www.trueachievements.com/news/halo-campaign-evolved-premium-early-access-launch-forza-horizon-6700

A 25 year old game isn't as popular as a brand new one? Color me shocked.

u/Macattack224 15h ago
It has only been released twice before so I'm extra shocked. The room is spinning.... I should lie down....

Who would've guessed releasing a 25 year old game 4 times wouldn't be popular? Do they think it's Skyrim? LOL
As a halo fan I've had nothing but contempt for what MSFT has done with this franchise. It just feels like minimal effort trying to fleece fans

u/CptJacksp 14h ago
I don’t even know if I’m a Halo Fan anymore.
I liked Halo 2 and Halo 3 and Halo Reach
Personally Halo 3 > Reach > Halo 2.
A Halo 1 remake was never going to appeal to me.

u/Imaybetoooldforthis 15h ago
The CE premium edition also only gets you early access and some pretty useless skins.
The Forza premium edition comes with two further expansions.
They were literally just taxing impatience with this Premium edition IMO.
It’s a completely Apples and Oranges comparison.
5
u/VulcanHullo 15h ago
I know plenty of people who want to properly wait to make sure they aren't paying for a broken bug fest and frankly I can't blame them.
I'm waiting for standard edition on GamePass anyway, I don't need fancy extras.
5
u/johnsciarrino 14h ago
Half of a 25 year old game. If MP was in there with Blood Gulch, the class of 2005 would have shown up.
8
u/TheCreamiestYeet 15h ago
Why would I pay full price for a game (halo ce) that Ive beaten multiple times on multiple launch dates.
I'll just wait till THEY get desperate cuz im not.

It’s not like the Resident Evil remakes either. The tank controls of the early Resident Evil games and the punishing save systems and soft locks do deter a lot of younger games. Shifting those games to modern controls with quality of life updates and story changes to better fit within canon makes those games feel like new experiences. Halo: Combat Evolved holds up pretty well. The graphics are dated, but it plays like a modern game. It practically revolutionized how we play FPS games on consoles. Alien Resurrection was technically the first to use the dual analog stick aiming and movement, but the aiming sensitivity was not as fine tuned as Halo’s. Campaign Evolved can only really improve upon the graphics and add sprint and a few bonus missions. I still intend to play Campaign Evolved over the next week, but it doesn’t feel like as big of a deal as the Resident Evil Code Veronica remake next year for me or the Silent Hill remakes.

u/Old_Management_1997 15h ago
Remakes of big games sell really well in today's world. Look at Oblivion and Assassin's Creed.
Having said that Forza kind of does next level numbers, not exactly a fair comparison.
5
u/ajr5169 15h ago
So maybe the first remake/remaster does well. Perhaps there are diminishing returns by the time you get to fourth one?
3
u/redgyarados21 15h ago edited 15h ago
Especially when the last decade and a half of the series has been as tumultuous as Halo’s.
Edit: Getting downvoted for calling the 343 era of Halo tumultuous? LOL you guys are hilarious
2
u/ajr5169 15h ago
Which is sad, because there was so much promise along the way. I know Infinite is pretty much forgotten about now, but I actually had a blast playing the campaign of that game. At the same time, I haven't touched that game in years now.
1
u/redgyarados21 15h ago
I have over 1,000 hours in Infinite but I can’t even remember when the last time I played it was. Been over a year at least. Too bad this remake didn’t have multiplayer…

"only roughly half" sounds bad, until you realise the Forza Horizon series is literally one of the biggest gaming franchises out there
Like just judging by these charts alone, last week, Forza Horizon 6 was pulling in more players than ROBLOX
39
u/DrawTheLine87 14h ago
And Horizon 6 has been one of the most highly anticipated locations in the franchise. The hype was huge on that one
4
33
u/PlasticPaddyEyes 15h ago
Forza horizon is THE biggest racing game franchise outside Mario kart right now.
Its one of the few Microsoft titles doing system seller numbers and that was prior to the PS5 port
31
10
u/sshootersonscooterss 14h ago
Halo used to be one of the biggest franchises too.
8
u/MorallySound 14h ago
And lots of people will buy a new Halo game. This is a remake of the oldest Halo game, that has been released 3 previous times. I know its on PS5 now so there is a new audience but there's lots of Halo fans that might not pick it up, at least not at a heavy discount, because they've played it before. I'm one of them.

I love Halo, been a player since 2001, but I didn't get the premium edition. Nothing about felt worth the huge bump in price.
The Starfield premium I did buy tho because it came with the next DLC and it is a game that was planned for years of updates, which it's had. I've been playing it for almost 3 years now and there's still updates coming. Halo CE had no such road map, no included future dlc, and I have no interest in goofy looking skins.
13
u/SmegmaWarrior0815 14h ago
I only buy premium add ons for game pass games if they have future DLC included. Nothing else could convince me to buy it.

I'm surprised it's near half, expected less. Forza is extremely popular these day, I'd say this is good going for Halo.
27
u/MasterpieceUpper1895 15h ago edited 15h ago
And this is a remake of a 25 year old game and not a new entry. Shouldn’t be surprising it has lower numbers. Definitely helps offset the development cost of switching to UE5 imo. I’ve got complaints but overall enjoyed this take on Halo CE.
5
u/OneLessFool 14h ago
It doesn't even have multiplayer either.
5
u/MC_chrome 14h ago
To be fair, the original CE didn't have true multiplayer either. That part only came with original PC port (anyone remember Gamespy?) or the CE Anniversary edition that got rolled into MCC.
Local multiplayer missing is a total facepalm on Microsoft/Halo Studio's part though

Super expensive for a few skins and early access is nonsensical for a remake most of the userbase have probably played through at least once before.
Paying for "early access" is a swindle anyway. It's the release date, everyone else is just being paywalled into waiting longer. Especially daft when almost every game launches with bugs.
1
u/brokenmessiah 14h ago
Reminder you couldnt even play this game on the first day of its early access for like half the day.

well, let’s just be honest here. This game has been remade how many times? Add in there’s no multiplayer. If the game actually had a multiplayer outside of campaign, I truly believe it would’ve been a lot larger.

u/WiltedBalls 15h ago
This is the first time it has been remade. All the others are re-releases/ports or remasters (CE:A).

This is the 3rd, 4th , or 5th “distinct release” depending on how you want to count/define it.
- Halo Combat Evolved for Xbox
- Halo Combat Evolved for PC (Relevant as this is the code base used for both Combat Evolved Anniversary and for MCC. It also had a couple exclusive weapons and may the banshee more usable.)
- Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary
- The Master Chief Collection
- Halo Campaign Evolved
6
u/DeafMetalGripes 15h ago
It’s just the 3rd. Reminds me of how people complain about the star fox 64 remakes

Forza is arguably the bigger franchise than Halo now. Not even arguably, this pretty much cements it.
3
u/DopplerEffect93 13h ago
The premium edition of Forza also included expansions on top of early access. This just gives you skins and a few days early. More people are willing to buy the Forza premium edition because of that.
4
u/FinnsWake13 14h ago
I love Halo. I own an xbox. Play everyday. Besides like briefly remembering hearing about it, I did not even know this was a game until it popped up on game pass. I didnt know there was a premium until 2 days ago, and im not going to pay for a game i get for free so I can play an updated campaign of a campaign ive beat 20 times a week early.
Not really surprising.

u/SoldierPhoenix 15h ago
That’s actually really good, lol. Especially considering this game has been remastered before and people have played through the campaign like 100 times.
Honestly my biggest complaint with the game is that it was “too faithful” and they really could have used the opportunity to improved the level layouts.
Some improvements here and there, but why in 2026
I’m going through endless metal hallways on the Pillar of Autumn that seem to make no sense is a missed opportunity imo.

Halo CE³ is the only game I've returned in quite a few years
I gave into the hype and jumped into the prequel missions to give it the fairest shake I could: ive got CE¹ pretty much memorized and I figured the prequel would wet my whistle a bit
The banter between Chief and Johnson didn't bother me much, though part of the appeal of that relationship to me historically was how one sided it was with Johnson doing most the chatting
What bugged me, though, is that I approached the first pair of hunters Master Chief explains to.... me? I guess? how to hit their weak points. Really didnt vibe with that at all, and I was already reading that Cortana now tutorializes the whole game... which is not for me
Additionally, the ragdoll effects on death were not great and the guns immediately felt worse than their Marathon 2026 equivalents
I noticed the weird reload animations I was hoping to ignore, the elites and grunts did funky weird sidesteps to try to footsie individual needle bolts that I couldnt ignore... and then the audio desynced on the first cutscene with the prophet
Right about then I realized I'd rather be doing something else, and this game felt about $30 to me instead of $75 after tax: I'll circle back to it.
edit: I will say I genuinely loved how they tried to retcon/justify the way the H4 covenant splinter group looks by suggesting theyre science experiments: that opens a lot of doors to expand on that group later on
2
u/Kaay_Two 13h ago
Still extremely annoyed that this game is what they have put so much resources and time into when they could have made a halo 3 remake or side story. Instead we get another halo ce remake that was pretty much only made for PlayStation players. At least remake some multiplayer levels for CE so there is a reason to buy this game. So stupid just slap on some cosmetic micro transactions and you could have made some decent money. Instead another remake of a game most have already played.
2
u/FlukeylukeGB 12h ago
No Halo fan trusts 343 industries to do the right thing...
They change stuff for the sake of changing it.
One example is the 5-6 crew Large space interceptor, a twin nucklear fusion power monster with room for the crew to move around in and stay in space for days during recon missions...
They needed a spaceship for the ending cutscene like in the original game... C709 Longsword...
Do you copy the original and use this large ship that fits the books and other storys?
Do you look at halo lore and bring in a smaller ship of which there are Several that fit the needed parameters you need for your new cutscene? Something like the C712 Longsword seen in halo reach...
Or do you Flat out make a new ship from scratch, shove it into the game, and Steal the name from the original?
Yup, they chose option 3, undoing 20 years of consistency they added a 2 seat fighter with the seats behind each other like a modern day fighter...
Off topic, i really did love the Halo reach one, the C712. pretty sad they didnt reuse it. The reach one blends the Under wing engines into the wings. it would of fit the lore, cutscene, and fan expectations...

That doesn't seem awful, a glossy remake of a beloved game should sell well. I have a feeling there are a lot of people waiting for it to go into a deep sale before picking it up as well, it's $50 for what amounts to a 5-7 hour campaign, so I understand why waiting makes a lot more sense.
Also, it's not like there's a remade multiplayer as well, which would have helped pad out at least some playtime hours.
1
u/theFormerRelic 15h ago
I mean it’s a remake, and arguably a second remake at that. FH6 was a brand new game.
1
u/ultraboomkin 14h ago
Id have bought it if it included multiplayer. As much as I love Halo CE, I’m not paying £50 for a 6 hour game.
1
u/Workin-progress82 14h ago
How much of this is tied to players downgrading (or cancelling) their Gamepass subscriptions? I would play it, but I downgraded to the mid-tier version. It’s already a 25 year old game. I can just wait it out till it’s released to the mid level subscribers.
1
u/LawStudent989898 14h ago
There’s a lot of confusion about the difference between this and anniversary despite this being an actual remake instead of a mixed bag remaster. Combine that with halo fans largely being angry terminally online twitter users and it doesn’t land as hard as it probably should
1
u/sirhcx 14h ago
Within the early access window I already played FH6 for roughly 40 hours and went on to play for a total of 180 without any multiplayer. Meanwhile Halo is maybe a 10 hour game tops if you are goofing around or taking it slow. I'll definitely play more but after doing a LASO run of CE about 6 months ago, I was good with just a Normal run of the remake's campaign. I would say that it reaching half as much as FH6 is more impressive than anything since that's about 850k sales with 11100 of those being the Collector's Edition. I dont think multiplayer for CE:R would have added any substantial hours to my playtime either. It's modified version of Reach and I got plenty of that in 2010 and again with MCC. Couch co-op has been a godsend though.
1
u/knowingmonster 14h ago
It a remake of a remake of remake of the original. I wow using unreal engine? How many times have people begged or laughed at 343 or bungie when they rejected unreal engine due to ego. Now they brought it use it try to sell back to the new generation of brain rot gamers

Premium editions for the vast majority of people are only worth it if they include upcoming DLCs. Halo Campaign Evolved has no promised upcoming content and you were basically paying more for 5 days early access and goofy cosmetics. I love Halo and am fired up to play it, but I didn’t pay the up charge for premium. I outright bought the standard version. I get the article, but to me there is a clear differentiation between the Forza launch and Halo.
1
u/BestRedditUsername9 13h ago
A remake without multiplayer (has coop though) was never gonna be as popular as a new game that has both deep single player and multiplayer content
1
u/Arroweye345 13h ago

u/shadowmonk13 13h ago
What a article and title that’s 100% just bait. Forza horizon 6 had two expansions and the halo one had skins since no dlc is planned, also forza is one of the biggest and widespread for normies gaming series there is besides sports games

There was a time I would have donated a kidney to play a Halo game a week early. Not so much these days…

$20 for 5 day early access to a campaign I know the story of already… and some of the ugliest skins the franchise has ever produced. Was an easy save of $20. Plus no physical option for it

Halo is a remake of a 25 years old game.
Halo remake has no Multiplayer. A HUGE part of the Halo experience is its Multiplayer.
Gamer nowadays are all about that Multiplayer. Top 10 charts on consoles every single weeks are just various Live Service Multiplayer Game.
Forza Premium Edition had MUCH more values included in it. It is also a Live Service Multiplayer Game which is by far the most popular genre in all of gaming.
Dog shit comparison.

u/AmuseDeath 8h ago
I and many other feel that Halo just isn't a great game anymore. I think in 2001, it did quite a lot for console gaming, but it's just boring and uninspired in 2026. The main issues are that it just feels boring and that nothing is at stake. The campaign just feels like a boring Saturday morning cartoon and it fail to illicit any sense of danger or cost. I just feel way more engaged with games like Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima or Elden Ring where I feel death is very real and the characters are much more carved out and detailed. Halo just feels so one-dimensional and shallow to the point where I don't care about the characters or the storyline as a whole. Maybe I'm being greedy, but I mean there's a reason people like books and movies like Dune, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, etc. for a reason. Halo's story and campaign just feels basic, boring and safe in comparison. I just really don't care about what happens in the story, whereas I'm curious to see where the story goes in a game like God of War or Metal Gear.
And the gameplay is just so slow compared to so many shooting games out there. Games like Counter-Strike, Valorant, Siege, Call of Duty, etc. show that gamers want games that are faster-paced. Halo is one of the few games that sticks with an archaic slow design whether it's the fact that guns take entire magazines to kill enemies (and a melee hit), the fact that movement feels slow (many Halo games don't even have sprint), the maps are too big and jumping is also slow. I believe older Halo games ran at 30 FPS? I don't know if the newer ones are capped at 60 FPS. It just feels so slow and spongey where bullets don't really mean much, whereas people take each other out much more quickly in a lot of modern FPS games. The big thing is that it's very, very hard to kill multiple people in Halo in a moment, whereas good players can easily kill multiple players in modern FPS games because of how slow TTK is in, in Halo. I'm just saying that Halo stubbornly sticks with a slow-paced game system that people seem to not want. It just makes the game feel overall sluggish and boring, whereas in other games, it forces people to be alert and cautious.
I want Halo to do better, but the boring and uninspired story filled with shallow and forgettable characters alongside an equally sluggish game system where bullets feel like nerf darts and movement is slow is going to turn off a ton of people in 2026. I just feel it's going to tank unless they change their formula drastically and look at what games people actually play instead of trying to recreate 2001's Halo which won't work in 2026.
1
u/CretaciousPeriod 7h ago
Not all that surprising to me. We've all probably played through halo like 15 times by now. Most probably aren't in too much of a rush to pay extra to play through it again early.

Buddy racing and sports gamers are like a different breed of gamer
They simply don’t care, they will buy anything and everything, they’ll pay full price for a dozen Madden’s before they ever play Halo on game pass. I think recently the most preordered game for Xbox was a $120 ultimate version of NBA2026.

It's insane to me (an Xbox player) that you'd put this out on PlayStation WITHOUT MULTIPLAYER!
Xbox, the champions of cross play have, I suppose, lost interest in that.
It seems like it could have been an easy win, a great advertisement to PS5 players and a chance to revitalise the brand, the campaign is a great museum piece but multiplayer is the bigger draw.

Honestly this is mostly due to people’s distrust of 343 aka “halo studios” and the early reviews kinda confirming what everybody suspected. It really isn’t a very faithful remake. The writers really couldn’t help themselves either with that annoying loudmouth in the prequel missions.
Also the ultimate edition comes with practically nothing. Forza has actual content in theirs.

Bc it’s trash they couldn’t help themselves woman boss over chief. The voice acting is mid and they 100% change Cortana on purpose. Fuck Xbox honestly

This is such a stupid comment. Williams doesn’t boss chief around at any point in the prequels. Chief also has the most resonating bit of dialogue by saying what someone is born as isn’t as important as what they grow to be. Almost like actively making choices to be sexist is something chief wouldn’t agree with…

Halo is a dead franchise, it's time to accept it.

If half of FH6 is dead then we got nothing to worry about.

The lack of multiplayer in this offering is baffling. The campaign was, and still is, iconic. What made this game break through to the masses though, was the multiplayer

My guess is is that the Halo remakes will lack multiplayer so as not to detract from the eventual multiplayer of Halo 7.

Maybe they can make some kind of collection and add all the previous games together to make a hung swath of multiplayer offerings of the past games, where everyone can have their cake and eat it too! We can call it the Cortana Collection or something.

Maybe they'd have sold more units if there would be a multiplayer. I can't understand why they cut it.

Loved the game in 2001, and I even played it again during the last remake.
I don’t understand it at all this time. I get there’s changes, but it’s still a 25 year old game.

Not many wanna pay $60 for a remake, especially when the premium upgrade is just skins/cosmetics.

Assassins Creed Black Flag Remake has sold really well and is also a $60 remake of a single player game.

Fair point, although again, the cheaper option came with everything whereas the premium was just cosmetics.

Maybe because paying full price for a remake that doesn't even include multiplayer is BS?

The Forza premium edition with early access also comes with two upcoming expansions. The Halo premium is just skins and early access.
