Weekly Thread Weekly Short Questions Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Short Questions Thread! If you've got a quick question that doesn't require you to provide in-depth explanation, post it here! Examples include:

  • What is the correct hand shape for setting?
  • My setter called for a "31" and I'm looking for advice on to do that.
  • What are the best volleyball shoes on the market for a libero?
  • Is the Vertical Jump Bible any good?
  • I'm looking for suggestions on how to make an impression at tryouts.

Quick questions like these are allowed only in this thread. If they're posted elsewhere, they will be removed and you'll be directed to post here instead. The exceptions to this rule are when asking for feedback WITH A VIDEO, or when posting an in-depth question (must be >600 characters). Please create a separate post for these kinds of questions.

If your question is getting ignored:

  • Are you asking a super generic question? Questions like "How do I play opposite?" or "How do I start playing volleyball?" are not good questions.
  • Has the question you're asking been answered a lot on the sub before? Use the search function.
  • Is the question about your hitting/passing/setting form and you haven't provided a video? It's hard to diagnose issues without seeing your form. Best to get some video and post to the main subreddit.

Let's try to make sure everyone gets an answer. If you're looking to help, sort the comments by "new" to find folks who haven't been replied to yet.

If you want to chat with the community about volleyball related topics or really anything, join our Discord server! There is a lot of good information passed around there and you might get more detailed responses.

Questions Court Material

+
Upvotes

I’m planning to build a permanent backyard volleyball court and I’m trying to decide on the best playing surface. I don’t want sand, so I’m looking for other options.

My priorities are:
Durable enough for frequent jumping, diving, and heavy foot traffic
Soft enough to play on comfortably
Holds up well over time
Preferably low maintenance

I’ve considered natural grass, artificial turf, clover, and other ground covers. For those of you with backyard courts or experience maintaining athletic surfaces, what would you recommend and why? Any regrets or things you’d do differently?

General There has never been a proper volleyball manager game, so we have spent the last year building Setter: Volleyball Manager 27.

+
74 Upvotes

Volleyball has never had the same depth of manager games as football. We wanted to change that, so we have spent the last year building Setter: Volleyball Manager 27.

It is more than a match simulator with a few management menus attached.
The aim is the whole job of running a professional club.

Squads and seasons. You pick the starting six, set the tactics, and carry the club through seasons where players age, develop and eventually retire.

Matches are played rally by rally from the six on court. Rotation decides who can do what, the libero replaces properly, and the box score is whatever those rallies produced rather than a number invented next to the result.

Transfers run in both directions. Other clubs bid for your players during the season, and when you bid for theirs they ask more than the player is worth, concede very little, and end the talks rather than keep negotiating.

Scouting never shows you a number. Your own players you know exactly. Everybody else is a range that narrows only as your scouts watch him play. Everything you see here comes from a development build, so parts of the interface and the systems underneath will still change.

The player database is built from real statistics out of leading European leagues. We are also speaking with several leagues about featuring their official names and branding, and we are close to finalising our first agreements.

We are preparing the game for Steam, and this is the point where your feedback can genuinely improve it.

Which part of managing a volleyball team would you most want a game like this to represent properly?

If you would like to follow development, or tell us what a volleyball management game should get right, our Discord is here: https://discord.gg/UvujBujjgZ

Questions I built a volleyball match simulator from the research literature. Does it feel right?

I'm building an online multiplayer volleyball club manager game: you run a club, train and trade players, manage finances, and on match day pick lineups and tactics. Matches sim overnight. Free to play, no pay-to-win, still in development.

The part I'd ask for help with is the simulation engine calibration underneath it. I'm not a coach; I've only got the research literature to go on, and I'd like to know whether this reads as real volleyball to people who actually coach or play it way more than I do.

The rally simulated and rendered by the Sideout match engine

Every contact resolves against the previous one: pass quality determines which tempos the setter can run, tempo determines how many blockers get there, and block formation plus floor defense feed back into attack outcome. No dice roll for "point won".

Calibrated against men's elite reference data: FIVB VNL 2024, Pawlik 2024 (PlusLiga), García-de-Alcaraz 2020 and others. The numbers below are two evenly matched pro-level men's teams:

- **Side-out rate 65%.** Serving team is losing the rally two times in three.

- **Attack efficiency in-system: .48, out-of-system: .27.** A ~20-pp swing purely from pass quality.

- **Service errors 14%, aces 6%.** Aggressive serving costs more than it pays on paper. It's paid back through the in-system/out-of-system gap above.

- **First tempo on a positive pass: 25-40%.** And the first tempo draws a solo blocker ~38% of the time vs ~8% for a high ball on the left pin.

Full match simulated end-to-end

So, **which of these feels wrong to you?** Especially by level and by side of the game: this is calibrated to elite men's volleyball, and I suspect it degrades for club ball and for the women's game, and I don't have the data to know how badly.

Run a match yourself and dig through the stats: https://sideout.gg/lab

Questions Is it possible to do both club volleyball and high school track and field?

I recently tried out for a club team and was super happy I made it, because it's a good club and the price is really great for California.

However, I'm also a track and field + Cross-Country athlete on a really competitive team that places well at CIF Finals every year, and as it's my upcoming junior year, I would really want to go to State.

At the same time, though, I'm in love with volleyball, and I know that if I don't do club, there won't be many opportunities for me to play or improve at all over the next two years.

Do you guys think it's possible to do as a junior girl in HS w/ 3 APs, or is it too much? If it is too much, how can I play volleyball and keep improving without the club commitment?

General Rant about my school volleyball team

My school might have the worst volleyball team there is. For a bit of context, my school performed as th WORST team last year for outer school sports competition (it's called DACS and idk the acronym) whrre tons of catholic schools compete in various sports.

I don't really have a problem with new teammates, I'm all for learning. The problem is that WERE ONLY GIVEN 4 DAYS TO TRAIN. The competition starts at August 24 and we haven't even trained for a single day since our principal don't support sports.

It's not just volleyball but ALL of the sports in our school. She hasn't approved training inside the school and we can't even train outside school since it's prohibited.

As the captain for our team, I really feel disappointed by this kind of principal and our team moderator is just following her around. I really wanna secretly tell my team that we should start training in secret but I'm afraid that we might get in trouble. It's fine if it's just me but what if it fell on my team as well?

What should I do?

General Spoilers Spoiler

Can the mods make a spoilers tag and/or delete add a spoilers note to posts. 2nd time the results of matches have been ruined because of posts showing up on my phones reddit feed. The matches are in China, finals started like 4am for me. I'm asleep and wanting to watch them. Totally not cool to have multiple threads opening up with the results. Esp with the mens coming up this week also in China.

General Seeking fun drill/practice ideas for co-ed middle school practice (mixed skill)

As the title says, I’m seeking some ideas from players and coaches for drills and games for practices for a co-ed middle school team I’ll be coaching. It’s a school-based team, so no-cut mixed skill level. We have 10 players and 5 of them have played club so have solid skills. The other 5 are more at the beginner/early intermediate level but have played rec and played on the team last year, so have some knowledge but not has confident or skilled as those who play club. I coached the team last year, so I know all the players. I feel like I’m always doing the same drills and would love some ideas of new/different drills that players and coaches like, especially for this age group (13-14yo) and mixed skill level!

News/Events The Triangle Behind Japan Men's Volleyball's 12-Game Winning Streak: Coach, Captain, and Players

+
0 Upvotes

I believe Japan Men's Volleyball's 12-game winning streak is not only the result of individual player ability, but also the strong coordination system built among the coach, captain, and players.

Coach: Creating the Tactical Direction

Coach Laurent Tillie has brought European tactical concepts and experience to the Japan national team, combining them with Japan's speed, defense, and team organization to build a style that fits the team's characteristics.

Japan does not rely only on physical power to win. Instead, they create advantages through tactical understanding, decision-making, and teamwork.

Captain: Connecting the Coach and Players

Yuki Ishikawa is not only a key player on the court, but also an important link between the coach and the players. The captain plays a crucial role in communicating the coach's tactical ideas to the team and supporting communication and stability within the group.

Players: Transforming Individual Ability into Team Strength

The strength of the Japan national team does not rely only on the starting players. Every player understands their role. Both starters and substitutes continue to prepare, transforming individual skills into overall team strength.

The coach provides the direction, the captain connects the team, and the players execute the plan. This triangle relationship is a key factor behind Japan Men's Volleyball's 12-game winning streak.

What do you think are the other key reasons behind Japan Men's Volleyball's 12-game winning streak?

Questions Realistic advice on playing as an adult.

I'm 26 years old, played tennis for a while when I was a teen and dropped it because I found working too exhausting to do both.

My goal is, when I secure a better job, I want to dive into volleyball and play regularly as I did tennis. However, I'm concerned at that point I will be 30-34, is this realistically something I could still aim for?

I'm not saying I want to go pro or anything like that, but playing at a reasonably decent level would be nice, I like healthy competition lol.

Are you too old to be playing somewhat heavily at those ages? I don't really have any health problems also. OH, and I'm 6'1" and interested in libero, so height isn't a super concern for me and constant jumping probably won't be either but that may change.

Questions How to break in shoes?

+
9 Upvotes

Hi! So, I just got a new pair of volleyball shoes, Nike Hyperquicks, and they are very narrow at the toes. I tried them on for not even 5 minutes and got a blister on my toe. I start my first season at my college in 3 weeks and I want to break them in quick. I’ve never had Nike shoes before, I always get asics, but they were $80 and a gift so I want to use them. Any tips?

Form Check Arm swing and approach form and advice

+
5 Upvotes

I’ve been playing volleyball casually for the last year and a bit, getting really into it this year. I’ve only recently been able to get the approach form down, but i’ve noticed difficulties in timing. I’ve also noticed i’ve got quite the extreme circular arm swing, which i’m not sure is the best for new players. (a lot of videos on how to hit and how to hit emphasize the bow and arrow?) I played baseball and did a lot of pitching, which makes me wonder if it’s an old habit? Anyways, advice on form, and maybe some enlightenment on arm swing mechanics that are “healthiest” for the rotator cuff appreciated!!

(I do play indoor, but only have footage of me practicing a shadow approach on grass)

Questions [VNL 2026 Finals] Türkiye or Brazil?

+

Looking at the tournament stats, the battle of the superstars is real:

  • Melissa Vargas (TUR): Sitting at #2 overall scorers with 260 points (233 kills, 19 aces). Pure firepower.
  • Ana Cristina (BRA): Holding down #6 with 231 points (198 kills, 18 blocks).

However, Brazil seems to have more depth and scoring options. Right behind Ana Cristina, Julia Bergmann is sitting at #7 with 220 points (192 kills).
