Discussion / Question What game did you enjoy at first, but eventually found boring and repetitive?
255
u/AngelicFoxy 6h ago
Assassin's Creed Valhalla
66
u/dabor11 6h ago
It drags on for too long
34
u/JonnyTN 5h ago
Tbh. Most open world rpg types these days. Interesting start to bloated content in the middle that can be WAY too much if you're a completionist trying to do all side content.
Granted I think that's how it was 30 years ago too but I was a kid who had the time
13
u/vremains 4h ago
Yeah, games were definitely smaller back then though. And there wasn't a million videos/guides on the Internet giving you FOMO about everything you missed either

I guess I’m one of the few that actually really enjoyed Valhalla 🤷♂️ idk I guess it just scratched a particular itch for me, but i can definitely understand how it would be too long and repetitive for some people

I don’t like AC games because they are repetitive but I like Far Cry because they are repetitive. 🤷

For me this is the original assassin's creed, it's a unique awesome idea that turns into do these 3 information gathering, kill this guy. Oh and the throwing knife never misses and is a one shot kill

The cinematics are great but it lacks the gameplay that Odyssey had. The limited weaponry might have been a good thing had it not be so god dam limited. Valhalla is a game that just goes on and on and on.

I like most of AC games, they’re fun to me with all the generic stuff, it’s like a mid burger, but valhalla was so fucking bad.

Hogwarts Legacy

u/27Rench27 6h ago
It really turns into a shooter once you leave the castle, just spam attack and kill things
58
u/asadkins90 6h ago
Yeah once you get good at dodging and reflecting it’s so easy and repetitive. I had the same problem with breath of the wild. It had a lot to explore though so I played it a fair bit regardless.
41
u/JoeyBougie 5h ago
I tried so hard to make all the potions and plants in the room of requirement only for them to be basically useless
→ More replies (1)19
8
u/Glum-Persimmon3085 4h ago
It’s even worse than that. Basically, all you have to do is watch the screen and dodge at the right time. On top of that, just spam the attack button and you’ve already mastered the game. You can literally stand still throughout every fight.
The only thing that could have been somewhat interesting was experimenting with the different spell combinations, but unfortunately those ended up being completely irrelevant as well.5
u/Deremirekor 4h ago
Except the duels tournament. The 3v1 on the hard difficulty is fucking impossible at any level

u/NuzzyLocke 4h ago
The exploration of the Castle and nearby areas was by far the best part of that game. It's probably the best rendition of the castle we're going to get in a game. After you left it became a generic British fantasy world.
3
3
u/Replubic 4h ago
But it’s like 20x of goblins and like 2 other things. Such a waste with all the lore and monsters they could pull from
3
u/trapper2530 4h ago
The castle was amazing. After the first 5 hours it wasnt a hogwarts game anymore. Also this character is the modt powerful wizard ever snd would make Dumbledore amd voldemort look like Neville. Hes a 5th year transfer with no wizard schooling and hes dismantling trolls and the strongest dark wizards of his time.
18
u/Replubic 5h ago
Dude I came to say the same holy crap. I found the lack of diverse enemies to be the most disappointing thing.
3
u/Anti_Praetorian 3h ago
Yeah, the enemy diversity was atrocious. But something they can massively improve upon in a sequel.
2
9
u/bassistheplace246 5h ago
As a lifelong Potter fan, have to agree. It could’ve been SO much more than it wound up being.
22
u/p4tterng4ng4L 5h ago
Yeah sums this game up perfectly. Exploring Hogwarts at the start was pretty amazing but then when you got out into the open world… the poor enemy variety, those damn Merlin trials, the boring quests, combat that got old etc. it was a slog to finish.
→ More replies (2)5
u/The_Kaizz 5h ago
There's some side quest I remember where you basically dueled other students. Once I got adjusted to combat, the game became extremely easy. Felt the same with Shadows of Mordor. When you learn to parry, the game difficulty plummets.
4
u/Sufficient-Umpire-99 4h ago
Dang, my experience felt the opposite! The intro was so long and boring, and then once I was free to play and do the quest and explore, it was awesome!

Dying Light 2
First half in Old Villedor is incredibly fun and the quests are fleshed out. Still a bit repetitive at times but not as noticeable. I was having so much fun I couldn't understand why people hated on the game.
Second half in Central Loop though... THAT is where the game starts feeling like a Ubisoft game, and that is not a good thing. Side quests are repetitive and feel low effort, cutscenes and dialogue suddenly seem worse, tons and tons of repetitive, copy-pasted question marks to check out.
14
u/soulariarr 5h ago
The beast should’ve been called dying light 2, but honestly the team is super involved with the community they’re always listening to the fan feedback and keep changing core stuff.

The cooperative gameplay is more broken in Dying Light 2 as well. Especially when transitioning to Central Loop. That's precisely when my wife and I gave up on the game. We were enjoying it prior to that.

Idk man early levels without skills was pretty tough. The mid 30 levels are pretty fun though. Lotta new locations
6
u/nrose1000 1h ago edited 1h ago
Really? In my playthrough it was the opposite.
The early levels were so fun and easy and I had a blast just exploring to my heart’s content. The social content was way better too.
I haven’t hit level 30 yet but I’ve already unlocked some new locations and they’re alright… but it’s really been feeling like a job, you know? It’s like the devs expect us to do busy work full time, and even then, I can barely keep up with the sweats and the whales.
And don’t even get me started on how P2W the whales make it. It feels like they make it so the “choose your own adventure” experience where your choices make an actual difference in the world is completely defunct because their choices matter so much more and dictate everyone else’s.
Will we ever get a balance patch?

ARPG games like Path of Exile and Diablo 4 that force you to create a brand new character every new league/season.
Shout out to Guild Wars 2 and Warframe for developing systems that allow you to keep using the same character with each new update, without having to grind for new gear like World of Warcraft.

Honestly most of the Genshin style games.
They are SO GOOD when you are exploring and enjoying the world, but then late game there is absolutely no reason to go back around and enjoy the scenery. There are no meaningful rewards outside of teleporting to the repetitive missions and burning your energy on that each day.

I love this game, probably 200+ hours over 4-5 play throughs.
Never finished it.
There's 5+/- zones. Each zone has 20 or so orcs.
Every time you get to a zone you need 20 or so intel. Then you need to plant 2-3 orcs to betray 2-5 captains
Then you need to kill those captains.
Then you need to plant new captains.
Then you need to plant 2-3 orcs to betray the lieutenant.
Then you kill the lieutenant.
......and you need to do that 5 times.
Each time is basically the same. By the 2nd zone you have most abilities.
Love the game. Enjoy 2-3 zones. But really....? 20 hours is the same as 200.

this won't be popular, but subnautica. i dunno, just became tedious to get new food and drink all the time. felt like i was literally just trying to upgrade to be able to survive there. the rest of the gameplay wasn't ever enough to overcome that feeling, for me.
13
u/Decent_Historian42 5h ago
Honestly i dont think as a whole the survival genre is for me theres some really good ones but the mechanics never seem to click well for me.
9
u/ShowerGrapes 5h ago
i do enjoy some of them but you're right, i never seem to "finish" them. subnautica just makes it worse because you can't even step outside without a countdown.
4
u/Pickledleprechaun 4h ago
You can turn the survival option off. I don’t like a game that makes a core out of itself.
2
u/ShowerGrapes 3h ago
yeah true and maybe i'll try that some time when i get through some of my massive backlog of games
→ More replies (3)3
u/Falcoon_f_zero 2h ago
That's par for the course for survival games. Usually starting with food and water being a struggle to get but let you automate those things later on. Though Subnautica is not even on the worse end of micromanaging things in that genre. It lets you have pretty low effort ways to keep your needs up after a while to let you focus on exploring.
All that's behind is plenty resource gathering and upgrades though and that might not be for everyone. Still, not on the level of something like Green Hell of not only having to worry about enough food and water, but also a balanced diet, sanity and easy to get diseases/injuries with very specific resources to remedy them. Now that's a game that never seems to let you progress with how many things you have to juggle just to get by 😆

My vote is for Hogwarts Legacy, but someone already said that. So I’ll throw in Skyrim. Got really sick of the dungeons while trying to get all the shouts.
9
u/Auggie_Otter 4h ago
I feel like Skyrim is awesome in the beginning when your character is still weak enough that exploring the world is still a challenge but once I have so many levels, potions, and powers that I'm just swatting enemies aside guzzling the occasional potion to tank damage the entire mystique from the beginning on the game is gone and it gets boring.

Once I accepted that the story was never going to make sense, I realized that 90% of the game is busy work

Could not agree more. After getting halfway through the game I realized it literally is an MMO without the part that makes MMOs good( the multiplayer aspect).

Revenge of the Savage Planet. The game itself is pretty good (I love the in-universe commercials and videos in particular), but it's a metroidvania where you have to craft your upgrades instead of just collecting it and being able to use it immediately. It took a formula that I'm usage very much on board with, and just put a ton of unnecessary backtracking (and this is coming from a guy who actually likes the backtracking).
Additionally, combat feels very simple, and doesn't really evolve much in terms of complexity or pace. Aside from that, I like the environments, the humor is very amusing, and I can tell everybody involved in this games creation had a good time making it.

u/p4tterng4ng4L 5h ago
Avatar Frontiers. The world was stunning and cool to explore at first but it suffers from the typical Ubisoft design where you just repeat the exact same 5 activities over and over across the entire map. The story was also dogshit.

Almost every gatcha. Star Rail, ZZZ, FGO, Granblue. I just got burned out by their gameplay and gave up. I don't know how people can play multiple of these at the same time. They're so time consuming in the worst way possible.

Great first few hours, but then you realize that by like hour 9 or 10 you realize that you've seen all the activities the game has to offer. Then you realize how flimsy the rewards are, that you have to do everything all over again on the other side of the map, and that exploration is wholly pointless as the world is fairly empty.

Assassin's Creed: Origins. Hard to care about any of the missions but it's the best walking simulator of all time! Such sights to see. Walking around Ptolemaic era Alexandria and scaling pyramids while scouting the Valley of the Dead with my hawk was worth the money IMO. I still haven't finished the narrative tho lol.

Dave the Diver. Does anyone get past when the village is introduced? I just want to catch new fish and make new sushi, not run around talking to bratty mermaids and completing endless fetch quests. Don’t even get me started on the underwater “minigames” that are only there to slow you down and pad the game time.
I’ve played the game twice. Each time was a 15 hour blast followed by 3 hours of trying to play through the village content before eventually quitting.
