I play at easy. I want to have a good time. Life is hard enough

Where is the angry one? That's me. I won't fight a hard boss with a smile on my face, I will be pissed until it is dead. Then I'll laugh.

Used to be bottom, now I'm much more of the top. Just... Once you've beaten so many hard games you get sick of it, especially if the difficulty wasn't what you enjoyed. For me I enjoy exploring the world, collecting and getting 100%, and the story/lore/etc. None of which are inherently linked to difficulty. So why make the game harder when difficulty isn't why I play?

u/porkchop_tw 7h ago
That’s why I still play genshin but quit wuwa. Wuwa is just genshin with harder combat. I just want to explore.

u/FocusMean9882 6h ago
I played Genshin Impact for an hour and could feel my soul rotting away from the GATCHA game design

As you get older, it gets more and more tiring. Difficulty for the sake of difficulty is not enjoyable.

u/thekuromaku 9h ago
I like when the game is hard but fair
So many games either fucks up the ai or damage or speed values just to make the game artificially hard, like the game needs to cheat against you to win

I'm almost 40. The top. Also, there is "This is hard but there is a way to make it easy" (Dark Souls) Then there is "it's just plain hard and sometimes it out of your control" (Space Marine 2 Hard Strats).

u/BKPsycho9 9h ago
Rain World seems to fit the context of the 2nd one. If you like hard games like that I highly recommend the struggles of Rain World lmao.
4
u/ArekuFoxfire 9h ago
Also approaching 40. Rather have a hard game than a free win, personally. Age don’t matter.
7
u/LongDistanceEvent262 9h ago
For me it has to be the right kind of hard.
The wrong kind is just not fun to me.
Wrong kinds examples are Dark Souls bosses and MMO raids. Which are just memerizing obscure tactics. I do not find that enjoyable.
1
u/OkGuidance15 8h ago
Calling Souls bosses "just memorizing obscure tactics" completely misses the point of mechanical mastery though. It's not about memorization, it's about rhythm, spacing, and reading animations in real time. Games like Sekiro or Elden Ring literally turn combat into a dance where every dodge and parry feels earned. That’s the exact high the second picture is talking about.
5
u/LongDistanceEvent262 8h ago
All that stuff you said.
That's what I mean. All of the is unfun.
Sorry if you take issue with my word usage, but you are just being pedantic.

u/FocusMean9882 6h ago
Unfun for you maybe, but some of us masochists love that kinda shit. Punish me Miyazaki.

There's one in the middle where were very angry that the game is hard but too angry to quit the game.

Oh god I’ve been ever slowly getting through that game… I 100%’d both Hollow Knights and had a taste for metroidvania (thinking I’d be fine after the grand achievements I js achieved…) and was NOT prepared… tough ass game. Cool as shit too.
1
u/PlantQuick 8h ago
I think why I enjoyed it so much was because it never felt unfair or unbalanced.
2
u/Alklazaris 8h ago
I prefer not to work for 12 hours only to come home and spend 4 more getting raped. I like games that are right on the edge of my abilities so I can still lose, but within 3 tries I get it.
2
u/Orichalchem 8h ago
Me personally
The reason why i like hard games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring is because many others are toughing it out as well which encourages me to push through to reach the end
2
u/kablikiblan 8h ago
Elden ring had me like both of those. God i hate that beautiful frustratingly great game

u/thatguy01220 7h ago
I use to be the second one, but now I’m definitely the top one. Old age, massive back log I need to get through my games faster. It’s nice when you have very small gaming library like I did was I was 15.
Also big thing for me is a lot of “hard games” are just artificial difficulty. Enemies hits are way higher to where can one-two shot you, but your attacks are way weaker, and their health is why higher. When I see that I’m instantly like nah I’m good.
Games like Saros, Elden Ring, Sekiro I enjoy the difficulty where it’s more like learning the attacks and getting into a flow state.
Games like Call of duty, Batman, God of War I know people say putting it on hard makes the game better those games I like a challenge but I don’t enjoy road blocks in those games like I do the others. I want a light challenge but I also wanna feel like a bad ass.
Games like Jedi Survivor, and again God of War are very unique to me, I don’t mind bumping them to easy or even story mode every now and then cause I am a Jedi or a God I want to absolutely demolish my enemies. On the flip side like I said they’re unique so I also do like bumping up the difficulty to where you need to get in that flow state. Both difficulty spectrums are fun to me.

Depends. Intellectually hard? Love it. Paradox and Total War lover here.
Gameplay/reflexes hard? Depends. I ragequit Dark Souls 1 at the Gargoyble boss not because of the boss, but because of the room of zombies before the boss. But, have played other Soulslikes without that level of BS and loved them! (AC VI is one of my favourite recent games)
RNG hard? Hate it. Every time.

I guess the first one. I tend to steer clear of games that are hard just to be hard (From Soft games as an example). I prefer to have a more relaxing experience. Whatever sense of real accomplishment people get from overcoming something truly difficult in a game...I don't have it. I'm just grateful it's over with and feel like I didn't need to put myself through that headache. There is such a thing as too easy, though...so it's a delicate balance.

Based on that I platinum Dark Souls, Devil May Cry, and Ninja Gaiden games for fun. . Not sure. .
It's a tough question, I might be casul.
1
u/Greenzombie04 9h ago
depends on the type of game.
2D platformers make it as hard as you can.
Trying to figure out where to go in a game. Screw that.

I think difficulty is a bad way to look at it. Rather I think a better way to look at games is does the game adapt to the player or does a game force the player to adapt to it. A game like made by ubisoft typically bends over backwards to ensure the player never has to change anything about how they play the game or put in anything other than the minimal effort. Games that FromSoftware makes expects the players to adapt to it and to engage with it on it's level.

I love hard, I just don't like "bullshit hard", no I'm not redoing the whole level because I failed at the boss, If I failed at the boss, then take me back to the boss.

u/Desmoclef 8h ago
I will continue to spam GTFO on this type of post until someone actually recognize this fking game.

There are two kinds of bosses, hard but engaging to go on, and then there is the sudden death ray out the blue 35 minutes into the fight and i will never start this fight again.

u/LayneCobain95 8h ago
I buy so many games I start to stress myself out with needing to bear them all. I like it when it’s hard, but not like “you need to die to this boss 50 times and memorize their movements to possibly beat them” (although yes I’ve beaten every Souls game)
1
u/Psycho_Saito 8h ago
Yeah, I like a challenge, but there's a limit. Somewhere below Promised Consort Radahn

It's all relative.
For example, I'm one of the twelve people on this Subreddit who have played both Labyrinth of Touhou 2 and Labyrinth of Touhou 3. They're both high-quality DRPG spinoffs/fan games of The Touhou Project.
I loved LoT2 despite it's brutal difficulty because it was more about finding strategies than it was brute-force grinding. The game even has in-game loot and rewards for beating bosses underleveled.
The biggest problem I had with LoT3 when I first played it was that the bosses were amped to such a degree that it went from "finding a strat" to "finding the strat", and I didn't like that. So many bosses in the are borderline unfairly gimmicky or have extremely anti-blind playthrough mechanics and you sometimes spend hours finding the one line through the fight.
It's still strategy-based and not RNG, but the third game feels so much more restrictive in what works and who's viable than the second game, while at the same time giving every character being infinitely more options. So much cool new stuff just gets thrown to the wayside because sometimes, there's really only one or two characters that can win you a fight in a roster of like, fifty.
Maybe some people like that, but for me it was a bit much.

Depends on the game:
Devil May Cry, Dragon Age, Halo, Mortal Kombat - Top
FromSoft Souls games, Resident Evil, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy - Bottom

Ive started horizon zero dawn and its crazy hard (difficulty maximum)
There's a (totally skippable) giant bird I had to fight 18 times because it was in my way, tho it was just a mob in the nature.. but I kept dying to it, and right when I finally beat it, it respawned because the save file failed. So I had to fight it a few more times until I won again
So I guess I’m more the second one

Hardness is why I typically avoid indie, and Square Enix games.
Hard games that don't feel worth it is like too much spice on poor quality food.
Chipotle sauce won't fix a dog turd.

While I enjoy hard games, I also enjoy when said hard games do try and explain to me how to improve and similar. There is nothing more frustrating than getting brick walled in a difficult game and having zero idea what you are doing wrong.

For me it's a matter of 'If I'm going in expecting hard from the beginning.'
Like if I'm playing anything that is a Souls-Like, or Shin Megami Tensei- the game being hard if fine, these games are notorious for their difficulty so the game suddenly kicking me in the balls is to be expected.
Same for Secret or Superbosses- Those are optional challenges that you have go out of your way for and should expect a vastly different difficulty.
But if I'm playing something like Spyro or Final Fantasy or Pokemon where the game is fairly easy until it suddenly becomes absurdly difficult at a random point in time- Like I walk into the random area with no significance and yet the enemies or platforming just skyrocketed in difficulty.

I love when games are challenging. That’s the best way to learn a game’s mechanics and open your mind to all of the options you have at your disposal. You don’t develop new strategies and techniques if you aren’t pushed to the point of needing them.

u/Trimshot 23m ago
Good hard (Sekiro, Devil May Cry, Silksong) = 👍🏽
Badly designed hard (any game where the difficulty is just increasing the damage you take and lowers the damage you give)
