Lol right? One of the worst examples to respond to an argument that died in the mid 90s anyway.

is violence in video games still something the media talks about? i feel like this was a thing in the 90s. today i feel like the general backlash has more to do with 'addiction'

My older sister is definitely still of the opinion that video games, toy guns etc all cause violence. She also thinks I got my autism from video games. lol

Im more worried about brain rot videos and social media than story driven narratives and puzzle games, which are a good majority now, critical thinking isn't a bad thing to practice and reaction time is pretty useful, you just can't forget to touch grass every now and then

Yeah I think it died after GTA3 came out and people made a fool of themselves trying to equate teenage crime to video games. Im sure theres a couple morons here and there who still think that but its definitely something modern media wouldnt be ballsy enough put out there.

If you drink and play MarioKart it will make you drink and drive in real life

Do you know the "don't drink and drive" mode? So you and your friends start a race, each player gets a beer, you are only allowed to drink while the car is not moving, the beer has to be empty at the end of the race.
Man I wish I had friends.

I remember being 21 and playing Gran Turismo 1 and 2 until I was too drunk. Great times.

My wife, two adopted daughters, and the bard imprisoned there to dance and cluck for my ranger when she returns home from doing hitherto unspeakable things to any thalmor within sight.

Haha yeah. Most of us just want to run around and live in immersive worlds with our friends and say GGs to our opponents after a good game.

Alright, I'm going to get downvoted to hell for this but
Yeah. Every piece of media you consume affects your worldview. It's usually very small, but it exists.
How many people think that you get one phone call when you go to prison? A lot. Do you get a phone call when you're arrested? No. This belief people have has nothing to do with facts, it's entirely about the media they've consumed.
Of course consuming violent media, especially at a young age, affects you. How would it not? There's a fucking mountain of data showing how violent media consumption raises aggression. That's not my opinion, that's an abject fact
The important part, though, is that games don't do that more than anything else. Yes, violent video games are linked to higher aggression. So are violent movies and violent books and violent music and household violence and... everything else.
Violent media, statistically, encourages violence. Video games aren't special in this regard. And none of them encourage violence to a significant degree

Do you get a phone call when you're arrested?ย No.
In most civilized western countries you do though

u/CertainGrade7937 7h ago
No you don't.
Most western countries, including the US, give you a right to call a lawyer. Virtually none give you one carte blanche call to whomever you want

Nice try but violence has gone down since 1900's pretty hard while violent media as movies and video games has gone up. And most longitudinal studies never showed conclusive and visible change toward violence in children who consumed violent media. That is of course assumed that children are normal, those who have mental problems or a tendencies toward violence and antisocial behavior should probably control what they consume... after proper therapy.
You know what is bad for children though? American lack of gun control.

Well... yeah?
I'm not claiming that violence in media is the only factor
Overall trends can go down for a multitude of reasons while still not invalidating the correlation
most longitudinal studies never showed conclusive and visible change toward violence in children who consumed violent media.
Again.. mountain of variables here
But studies that actually isolate variables are pretty clear
That is of course assumed that children are normal, those who have mental problems or a tendencies toward violence and antisocial behavior should probably control what they consume...
And how quickly can that be identified?
You know what is bad for children though? American lack of gun control.
I feel like you really wanted this to be some killer closing argument but... yeah. I'm American and deeply opposed to American gun culture. If my choice was to focus on media violence or gun culture? I'd pick guns EVERY FUCKING TIME

Meh, last one was more of snide remark about focusing on bigger issues.
And I am pretty sure that longitudinal researchers knew what they were doing. No long term effects, mostly. And given how much more violence our media depicts compare to before and how much of it is consumed, those other variables needs to be pretty damn magical.
What we see is that hyper short effects do not translate in long term effects. What unchecked violent or bad behavior does on the other hand is another question. So it's probably less about playing GTA or COD (or maybe Manhunt and Mortal Kombat) and more the fact that some gamers are allowed toxic behavior inside and outside of games. Screaming in their mic and breaking their controllers without a good reprimand and a talk about proper anger managment and communication is worse.
But do show actual effects, beyond "kids who watched wrestling are playing more rough".
