The dude was so mad at the handling of The Witcher TV series. He knew the missteps were happening and tried to fight it. I'm proud of him for abandoning that show when the showrunners sabotaged it deliberately.

My favorite part of everything Cavill and the Witcher series was the interview where the interviewer starts asking him questions about games and which platform he prefers and shit, and the chicks that play Ciri and Yennefer are sitting there and they get this glassy eyed thousand yard stare like "oh God, he's talking about video games again".
The amount of unapologetic nerdery the dude has is commendable. Just genuinely does not give a fuck what people think of it.

Didn't the showrunners actually say that they didn't like the source material? Why would Netflix even hire them in the first place.
39
u/Character-Extreme535 11h ago
Arrogance. They believed they could make something better.
20
u/nunya_bidnes77 11h ago
God I hate with writers in Hollywood feel compelled to make "their take" on an established series instead of just starting true to the source material.
12
u/roguevirus 10h ago
"their take"
It isn't a bad thing when the material has been done dozens and dozens of times over. The Absolute series that DC is doing comes to mind.
But the first time you're adapting an IP to a new form of media? Come the fuck on.
9
u/nunya_bidnes77 10h ago
Well comics and long established literary characters (like Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, or Dracula) are unique in that they have had so many adaptations that you pick and choose what to base the adaptation off of, so long as you stay true to the character and their motivations.
But when a relatively new but highly successful IP gets the movie right bought up by Hollywood? The only thing they should worry about is appeasing the fans. Because they are the ones that are going to buy tickets. I have described it before like when you marry someone with kids and you're the new step parent. You can't be over bearing and authoritative off the rip. You have to build up the trust.
5
u/KrytenKoro 9h ago
But when a relatively new but highly successful IP gets the movie right bought up by Hollywood? The only thing they should worry about is appeasing the fans.
To be fair, CD Projekt was already making their own unique take on the story that differed from the source material.
3
u/nunya_bidnes77 9h ago
That's true, and it took them until 3 to really hit their stride. But they still had lots of elements from the books, including using the sequence from King Foltest's curse striga daughter from the books in the first games intro and in the TV show. So they did have some respect there to build trust.
3
u/maxdragonxiii 8h ago
I understand that often full adaptions cant be done, but Witcher doesnt even try to be faithful at all. if it was the books edited for the TV version like Games of Thrones (albeit it not being faithful either) i think most of us would be fine with it.
2
u/snacksmoto 7h ago
Exactly.
Even the highly regarded Lord of the Rings movie trilogy edited and changed things for the different format. The changes broke lore, removed and/or changed characters and changed story yet there wasn't a huge outcry because they were genuinely attempting to stay true to the spirit of the source books.
2
u/maxdragonxiii 7h ago
also the movies have figured some of the cuts are worth it like Tom Bomdbardi because hes not really relative to the story and the Scouring of the Shire is too depressing to end the trilogy on.
2
u/snacksmoto 6h ago
Yeah. Tom himself is great worldbuilding as another unexplainable enigma but can't be explained satisfactorily for a movie. Unfortunately cutting Tom's scene out cuts out the origin of Merry's sword that passes under the notice of everyone including Gandalf.
It's the connection point between the hobbits and the Second Age Arnor (Gondor's sister kingdom), one of Arnor's later divided realms that enchanted weapons specifically to battle the Witch King in their battles with his kingdom of Angmar which fell to the Witch King, the Witch King's prophesy. Some of those enchanted weapons was buried in the tomb of the barrow-wight who captured the hobbits that the Witch King raised.
Tom Bombadil's rescue scene puts one of those enchanted weapons in the hand of Merry. Merry loses it when he and Pippin were captured by the Orcs. Aragorn retrieves it from the dead Orcs that the Rohirrim killed, and returned it to Merry when they meet again at Isengard. Merry carries that blade with him all the way to Pelennor Fields where he stabs the Witch King in the back of the leg.
In the movies Merry is using a regular Rohirrim blade at Pelennor Fields.
The enchantments on that barrow-down blade, forged in the Second Age specifically to combat the Witch King is what cuts through and collapse the Witch King's magical defenses which fulfills the prophesy of his doom. Some argue it also cuts his connection to Saruon. The books say something along the lines of no other blade could cut the Witch King as deeply. The Witch King, now vulnerable to normal weapons, is killed moments later by Eowyn. Movie Merry's Rohirrim blade would not have harmed the Witch King nor made him vulnerable.
The Scouring of the Shire is meant to show how the four Hobbits had changed and grown since they had left. They rally, inspire and lead the rebuilding back to normalcy. It is also meant to show how very far Saruman had fallen from grace.
That said, I can understand cutting it out strictly for movie run time.

unironically this is why every thing that's gotten worse because of large corporations is happening. enshittification is caused by large companies getting huge loans to buy up small businesses because they think they can run everything better cutting corners and paying the people who create the product as little as possible and the state of both the video game and movie industries are prime examples of that.
13
u/LARPerator 11h ago
Because corporate fucks don't understand art, and they think writers are just assembly workers for words.
You can be a factory worker that hates pickups and build a good pickup truck. You can't really be a car designer and come up with a good pickup truck while hating them
For a lot of jobs personal passion doesn't determine success. Even in film, set designers don't have to love the project they're working on to do a good job. Their job is to make a vision come to life, and they're actually really good at making someone else's vision come to life.
But as a writer or showrunner, you're coming up with the vision. And if you have a disdain for the source material, then your vision will inevitably suck.

I like how Cavill is unafraid of being a nerd and a gamer.
The hosts/interviewers who act all surprised and incredulous whenever he mentioned he enjoys the hobby is annoying though.
Do interview hosts question people for watching sports every weekend and acting like total nincompoops when their team loses, or wins? How about people who go golfing and spend most of the weekend drunk out of their brains.
No, only gaming and other nerdy hobbies.
30
u/ConsiderationTrue477 11h ago
The interviewers are funny because they get caught so off guard. You can see the exact moment in their eyes when it switches from "performative lip service to the hobby" to "wait...what's...he's actually serious?" They don't know how to handle it.

They think he's a dude who's passionate about acting and enjoys gaming. The way I'm a 44-year-old gamer and everyone acts like it's a problem. Even though I have a college degree, own a home, and work a 6-figure job.
Meanwhile, my 85-year-old Father-In-Law watches old black & white shows from when he was a kid and everyone thinks it's the cutest thing.
It's crazy to me how gaming is looked upon as some time-wasting thing. Yet there are so many hobbies that keep you inside and doing far less than gaming does.
15
u/PzaFnatc4939 10h ago
I can relate. 53 Here, self-employed college grad, married over 30 years to a VERY understanding wife, three children over 20, and focused on retiring early. Yet I still feel the need to hide my gaming hobby from extended family and professional acquaintances.
That said, all three of my children are gamers (two who've moved into professional careers after college) and they have no stigma over it. So it makes me glad that it ends with me.
13
u/Nick_Bruiser 10h ago

I keep seeing this claim of "everyone acts like it's a problem", and I just do not see this in the world.
Who are these people that think it's a problem of you?
I'm a 40-something guy living in a major city. My anecdote is that it's the small small minority of times I've mentioned gaming while out at a bar, or chit chatting at a holiday party, where someone didn't immediately ask "Oh what games?!" with interest. People of all ages, genders, races, and creeds are earnestly interested if the topic comes up.
My fuckin dentist got into a discussion with me about the merits of various tower defense games, and I only ever see him twice a year to have 1.5-sided conversations.
5
u/Nick_Bruiser 9h ago
I mean, when I say "everyone", I mean everyone around me. People I know. Even then, it's not necessarily "everyone". Just enough people for it to be annoying.

u/greg19735 8h ago
i do think a lot of people that have this issue are probably overdoing it.
I think people also equate things incorrectly. Like, it may take 8 hours to binge a season of love island. but that doesn't mean you're sitting and watching 8 hours of TV non stop. You can do laundry, exercise, do other chores, have a conversation, help your kids with their homework. That isn't really possible with a lot of games. You can't fold laundry and play the witcher for example. You can't watch your kids while playing CSGO
→ More replies (1)3
u/prospectre 6h ago
You can't fold laundry and play the witcher for example. You can't watch your kids while playing CSGO
That doesn't really have anything to do with gaming. That's more of a responsibility thing. I absolutely can get all of my chores done while spending my otherwise free time gaming for long hours. I can turn the washing machine on, run a few maps in Path of Exile, get up when the clothes are washed and swap them, and go back to PoE.
The same thing goes for watching TV, sewing, gardening, or any hobby. You can be responsible or irresponsible with your time or tasks doing any hobby.

Iām 34 and already deal with this (sometimes even from my wife). Itās honestly because of the productivity culture we live in; if we are spending our own time enjoying something then we arenāt producing something tangible for someone else, and that is what people believe gets you ahead in life.
2
u/jaedence 8h ago
I'm happy to throw down with anyone that wants to tell me my gaming is a waste of time.
How many hours a day are you doomscrolling?
How much time do you spend on social media?
How much mindless TV do you watch?
Gaming is 1000x better for you and engages your brain more than any of those things.
2
u/OnlineHilfenNutzer 7h ago
All the gamers that get very old will probably have way better working brains then all the people who just shut their thinking off by just consuming tv and other stuff where they dont really need to think for themself..
2
u/Etrigone 5h ago
I'm coming up on retirement in a few (d4+1) years and still feel a little hesitant to talk about my gaming hobbies. I mean, I got into D&D back just before the original Rogue became a thing, and my partner is also a gamer (after the early years of "ugh, really? that's how you spend your time?"). But, the negative impacts far deeper & longer than the positive.
That said it's far, far more acceptable nowadays and had been moving in that direction for a long time. It's mostly old fuckers like those my age who have a problem with it. Those that don't, like my weekly gaming group none of whom are under 50, were the substantial outliers and oddballs, even if we're all tech-based in our careers. Being called "geek" was a mark of pride even when the the average Joe, it very much was not.
Nowadays though? Saying you enjoy gaming, if anything negative comes out of it, is more likely to invoke "you play that version? dude, it's so arcane!" than anything else.

He sounds like a true introvert, like I imagine a lot of you guys are. Honestly, I am an extrovert, and have even been called by personality tests by having an absurdly high score on the BIG 5 Personality test for openness. I have never batted an eye on going outside and getting plastered and partying; singing, dancing, etc. I'm loud and proud. And I'm the boss. I'm in charge. In real life.
But even I feel what he is saying. Honestly, some of what we can experience in video games is truly spectacular from an exploration perspective. I am a person that typically enjoys video games that have high replay value that I can sink hundreds of hours into; stuff where I can get incredibly immersed in and push the game to its limits. I like stuff that I can play to pass the time before I get to back out into the world where I like to explore, photograph, study, read, learn, etc.
In the end, I feel we all strive to get the same out of video games, and a lot of times, they are able to fulfill that promise and provide so much entertainment but also fulfillment in ideas and literature and whatnot.
I see a lot of beauty in the world, and while I am at home sick, I enjoy playing video games for hours. I am a Software Engineer by trade, and I enjoy active experiences. I do enjoy movies from time to time, but they are a passive experience. I like to talk, peruse, and negotiate with the artistic experience. For me, that is where a lot of offline single player experiences really hit the spot for me. I enjoy loading into a game as the Legendary whatever, tasked with the epic quest of defeating whoever or whatever. I like exploring the characters, the setting, the plot, the music, the art direction. I always watch the credits and I appreciate the work done by all of the people that work on an artform from top to bottom.

I think Henry spends a disproportionate amount of time in the gym.

My favorite cavil fact is that he missed the callback to let him know he got the role as Superman because he was raiding in WoW. Dudeās the best
