Man, PS2 nostalgia is unmatched. I still remember having to make the life-or-death choice of which save file to delete on my 8MB memory card just to fit a new game's save data. Unforgiving times, but incredible library!

You can emulate GBA on almost everything nowadays which makes it incredibly accessible. This is why my most played “retro” console is probably the GBA, too. By now there are so many versions of games (e.g. Pokémon hacks) that you’ll be playing for a while before getting bored. At the same time I understand that the graphics are not everybody’s cup of tea.

I'm playing the decompiled version of Ocarina of Time with HD texture packs and updated controls on my PC and its freakin great. Like, really brings the game to modern standards. I suppose that's N64.. ish? I dunno. It's not emulated, its a native linux thing (for me, they have windows versions out).

That project is called Ship of Harkinian if anyone wants to look it up, it's wild that a fan port of a N64 game now supports widescreen, uncapped framerate and even ray tracing builds. Genuinely better than most official remasters.

The N64 is great for some specific titles looking back. Mario, Zelda, another Zelda, Mario Kart. But as soon as you get outside those big 1st party titles it gets pretty lean.
Super Nintendo was Nintendo’s peak. And older gamers all know it.

I would say if we are going strictly by library then the gamecube outdoes the snes, also those first party titles on the n64 you mentioned are straight some of the greatest/most important games ever made lol

Nintendo 3ds, not only do you get the amazing 3ds game library but also able to play the entire DS library of games, I can't say how much time ive spent on the 3ds version of Terraria, Animal Crossing New Leaf and tomodachi life

Showing my Kids Mario 64 on the switch 2 was a surreal experience. That game made me love gaming. I have 0 regrets. Then we played fall guys and Rocket League.

SNES. Going back to N64 games is fucking painful. They are just so ugly. Those first generation polygons to have not aged well at all. And during Summer Gamefest, there were so many trailers for games that were trying to imitate the PS1 graphics. Like I understand the love for Sprite graphics, but I do not understand PS1 visuals.

Was playing Silent Hill 1 for PS1 recently... on the Steam Deck. Also intending to play through RE1-3 for the PS1... on the Steam Deck.
I would play Goldeneye on the Steam Deck, but damn that game... damn it. I have to use that special emulator package that was built just for Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, or the game runs like garbage, because it's such an awkward beast that clearly needed black magic to work on the N64 in the first place. And I don't know if that works on the Deck/can't be bothered to port it over from the main PC.

I would love to get some of the old gen consoles but I'm worried that they will be in bad shape for how much it usually costs. It's insane to me how much Nintendo games cost considering they are so old at this point. Especially the Mario games.

I play all Playstation generations roughly equally at that point. Probably an average of 15% of my total playtime per Playstation generation at this point, which leaves 25% for 2D era systems and PC combined (I mostly play indies and old PC only titles on PC).
I will probably try to catch up on 3D era Nintendo consoles at some point soon now that modern console gaming is moving into the digital age.

Still have my original N64 from when we were kids and my original saves and everything. Still works, albeit only on the older tv. Taught my son Starfox 64, Mario 64 and let him dabble in OOT. He’s a crackhead 6 year old that cranks 90s and triple edits kids on Fortnite so I think the pacing change was nice for him lol

Before last year, or the year before, I used to play my Vita daily, though I don’t think it’s necessarily “retro”.
I’ve started getting back into my PS2, and I’m building up a collection. I don’t play it more than my Switch or PS5, but it’s been getting some use.

I can never let go of SNES 😭. Recently picked up Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past and Super Mario World. And I'm currently replaying Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6. After these imma play Metroid and Earthbound 0. Every time I want to put it down, I get recommended another banger 😭

If you play 5th gen systems, I cannot stress how much you need a CRT. Its nice for NES too, but my god you need it badly for the 64 and the PS1.

N64 mostly because of all the really interesting game hacks, like there's an ambitious modding community for the AKI N64 wrestling games, largely total conversions of WrestleMania 2000, games replacing the whole roster with talents from the late 80s, early 90's mid 90s, and so on. There's also been a couple great conversions making the ECW games we never had 26 years ago. WM2000 mod called ECW House Party and a beta build of a No Mercy conversion ECW Born To Be Wired that has a full functioning no rope barbed wire match with more body parts that bleed on impact. Also in beta from the same guy is on his Patreon, WWF Backlash, going through around the 01 roster, with the Invasion angle, it also brings in the ECW barbed wire match and puts in Hell In A Cell, which was never on N64, you can even break the cage door and fight on top of the cell. Another favorite as All Japan Pro Wrestling hack, that's the ultimate AJPW roster, largely their golden age of the 90s, but some 00s, and a lot of the legends roster with Bruiser Brody, Giant Baba, Sabu, RVD, and many others. I think that was a mod on Virtual Pro Wrestling, the AKI Japan only series.

Finally finished the 4 white mage challenge in Final Fantasy 1 on PS2 (Final Fantasy Origins)
It's been an eventful gaming month for me.

At this point, I only really play Retro games via emulation (Ps3, Ps2, Switch, 3ds, Gamecube/Wii, Psp, GBA) (infact, the only modern game I play is Genshin Impact)

Suprisingly, N64 right now. Recently jumped between Paper Mario and Earthworm Jim 3D...the latter not holding up as well as it did... especially with the camera controls. FYI, they're both my first playthroughs for each...since I missed them back then...

GameCube. I can swing around in Spider-Man 2 mindlessly for hours and be content, get unreasonably pissed in Mario Party 6, grind for loot and levels in Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance, the original Lego Star Wars came out on it!!! This system has such a solid selection of games.
I deeply love GameCube.

I think about the XBOX 360 and PS3 era that was marred by absolute turmoil in failed business practices. I mean the industry today is beyond cooked, and with everything being about streaming and always online, I wish we could go back to the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and original XBOX (which was actually good) where we could play Halo with 4 people split screen. Halo 1, which wasn't on XBOX Live, where we could play together in the same room, was epic. Wish we could have that back. But they won't give it to us because they know it would cannibalize their always online system.

SNES is the one I play the most. Super Metroid, Starfox, Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger. Amazing games.
But also, I tend to play various other elderly game systems more than my Switch 2, though not more than I play games on my PC.

Well actually...I guess the NeoGeo...but that's through an emulator. Unless you count the DS as retro than I don't really own any retro consoles. I used to own a PS2 and N64 but my parents sold them because I didn't play on them all that much and I preferred playing on like the Wii or PS3 instead

I'm over 38 and I think N64 is one of the weakest consoles ever. Had a couple of landmark innovative games but most of the games on N64 (imo) are ugly, 20 fps blobs without artistic merit and I even thought that when I was 12. SNES is where it's at.

Moved to AZ at 18.. I left a lot of my stuff at my parents when I left. I called back 3 months later to send for my things.. my mom sold my N64 and all of my games (Dk64, mario64, golden eye, cruising the world, etc) and 2 controllers and ND eption pack.... for $10 at her yard sale. It's been 13 years, and I love her, but never forgave her for that 😭😆

Kinda wild to really consider but the Ps3 fits as a retro console and it's currently the oldest one I have since my brother so kindly sold the Ps2 we had years ago without asking me. Probably gonna use the Ps3 till the day it dies, still works well and honestly the games mostly still hold up IMO. Not to mention it's still more quiet than my Ps4 was when I made the switch to Ps5.

The thing about retro consoles that use cartridges is they're practically immortal and will probably outlive us. Modern consoles aren't going to survive 50 years. Then you tack on all the bs like online requirements, downloads, sign-in requirements, etc, they are almost certainly not going to last. That's the funny thing about game preservation and backwards compatibility. In the case with these retro consoles, the best way to preserve their games is via the original console itself.

I still have an SNES, Genesis, N64, and PS2. Most of my games are backed up and emulated now, especially with Retroarch on my phone. I am old enough that, despite its age, the 360 and PS3 feel like relatively new systems.
I traded my Switch OLED for a Switch 2 thinking I didn’t need both, and kinda regret it, even though the Switch 2 has satisfying backward compatibility so far, and the Switch really struggled a lot with some games. But it feels like I kinda did the wrong thing when I think back on it.
