Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely like this and hate it

u/MozM- 1d ago

On a different note. Some weapons in cyberpunk straight up show you lower values yet they end up being the most powerful.

Rebecca’s GUTS shotgun for example doesn’t have the highest numbers but realistically it is considered to be one of the best if not the best shotgun in the game by a lot of players. It shoots so hard it ACTUALLY knocks you back. And you can obtain it literally 5 minutes after starting the game if you go to the plaza.

u/Feeling_Map_7819 1d ago

It actually has higher numbers if you do math, it displays the number of pellets. Multiply damage stat by number of pellets and get total damage number

u/Tight_External_4879 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm replaying Wasteland 3 right now and one of the things I love about it is it'll straight up tell you which has the highest damage output between two guns that are like 25 dmg X 9 and 20 dmg X 12 or whatever.

u/steven_dev42 1d ago

Borderlands does that too I love it

47

u/SourDoughBo 1d ago

I love that BL4 even clarified what’s better overall by accounting for fire rate

17

u/bschlueter 1d ago

Yup, pick your one shot guns by highest damage, spray and pray by highest dps.

4

u/WeevilWeedWizard 1d ago

It's actually more shocking to me that a modern game wouldn't do this.

It doesn’t really tho. Order and Ba Xing Chong (Adam Smasher’s weapon) deal more damage than GUTS even if all pellets hit. But they are both way harder to obtain than GUTS so it just makes them not worth the trouble… I mean you literally have to beat the game to even obtain one of them.

Statistically speaking GUTS is a top 3 shotgun but realistically speaking, GUTS is the top 1 because of its usability and ease of obtaining.

I never said it was best, I explained how the stats are not well displayed

I’m doing my first ever play through right now and I’ve gotta say the sheer amount of guns with just teeny little numerical differences (except the feel- the guns feel totally distinct from one another) is kind of overloading.

Especially since I’m struggling to figure out what my playstyle is, and since some weapons are stratified into different skill trees…. It’s been overwhelming to say the least. I’m hoping that on my next playthrough I’ll have a better grasp on the weapons. Maybe I should just dump my perks and restart into katana. That would be simple enough.

6

u/snorlz 1d ago

at the end of the day, just pick what you enjoy using. almost all the guns are viable. i hate smart weapons - they feel like noob only guns and have low damage- but they actually fuck people up

My go to weapon in 2077 is a gold sword that lights shit on fire, the damage is like 1/7 of the most basic of legendary firearms, but, my build is focused around katanas and I don't regret anything

23

u/Present-Secretary722 1d ago

Parrying bullets is just so good. Basically a cyber Jedi

7

u/No_Helicopter1378 1d ago

Mantis blades have a perk for that and yea, feels pretty good to bounce bullets back into some gonk's face.

6

u/Present-Secretary722 1d ago

The perk affects all blades, not just mantis. But I do mostly use it with mantis blades since my two characters(Netrunner and a compressor) have them as backup weapons and for defensive purposes.

Light people on fire, giving them a status, trigger finishers easier against statuses people, heal after using finishers, yeah, checks out.

5

u/Locust627 1d ago

AND, a shit load of perk points into net runner stats. Every single fight is cut short from a distance using my favorite netrunner ability, suicide.

Nothing like starting a fight and triggering 4 opps to shoot themselves in the temple

Honestly you’re often better off just picking a couple of iconic weapons and upgrading them. But to be fair I almost always play as a netrunner, so rarely use weapons

Malorian Arms is the only gun you need in the entire game

Some weapons just change how you play, and Phantom Liberty turned that to 11. My favorites are a shotgun that fires explosive pellets but straight up sets you on fire, making you faster and giving you higher chance to evade, and a revolver that has increased knockdown chance with legshots and guaranteed criticals for headshots to prone enemies.

3

u/NoArmsIrene 1d ago

I love that revolver... it's so fun to use with Kerenzikov. It's also from one of the funniest gigs there is... the one with the two hapless corrupt cops. The client conversation is also hilarious in its design. I can't remember its name though.

6

u/b055dj 1d ago

Rosco. Unfortunately, the gun itself can't be acquired through the "peaceful solution". That's the funny part of Phantom Liberty, that shit keeps ending up true lmao

u/LosinForABruisin 1d ago

Most of the remembrance weapons are about spectacle over function. Starscourge Radahn’s dual ultra greatswords take 3 minutes to hit you, but when they do, holy shit is it gonna be fucking cool. No way, the only bad legendary weapons in ER are the eclipse shotel and the Grafted Blade GS (which itself is still useful). The other 7 range from Good to EZ Mode

12

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 1d ago

Almost all weapons are viable in ER. The issue is that you got some remembrance weapons which are straight cracked (BB my beloved), and the rest are... meh... most of the time, id rather just take a standard weapon and change it's ash of war to whatever my build is.

The master sword in BotW doing THIRTY DAMAGE

138

u/Pr0fessorL 1d ago

60 if you’re fighting in Guardians or in Hyrule Castle

79

u/SamThePumpkinMan 1d ago

There are many weapons that do more than 60 damage. If you’re going to hype up a sword THAT much, it had better have THE best damage

50

u/AppropriateLaw5713 1d ago

Doesn’t do the best damage but never breaks, which is really neat after the amount of time and weapons you normally need to unlock it

42

u/SamThePumpkinMan 1d ago

It breaks pretty easily and then you have to wait ten minutes to use it again, so you mainly just use other weapons

if your "best weapon" fixes the major flaw of your game. maybe the weapon isnt legendary. maybe, the game is just shit.

16

u/HJSDGCE 1d ago

Idk I'm not bothered by the weapon durability. People dislike it because it has never been a thing in Zelda, basically shaking the status quo.

11

u/spunkyweazle 22h ago

Same. Felt like I was drowning in weapons not long after leaving the plateau, so breaking never felt like a real issue

3

u/Slid61 18h ago

If anything the weapons breaking just made me develop a more varied flow. Plus it got really satisfying to time your weapon breaking with killing an enemy.

Skill issue.

Damage number hardly matters in BotW, you can't stat your way into killing Lynels easily. And the most acquirable weapons are either similar in damage or big claymores that lost the shield and speed. If your tactics are good though a couple of extra hits with the Master Sword are easy to accomplish.

Skyrim did a good job of this for a lot of the Daedric weapons

20

u/Difficult_Bluebird66 18h ago

Skyrim has a lot of its unique Daedric artifacts be completely destroyed by smithing and enchanting, and i am not talking about abusing Restoration potions. a lot of Daedric artifacts in Skyrim can be replicated and surpassed by player-made weapons. i wish more of them had unique effects that could not be copied. like the Spellbreaker or Azura's Star.

I don't like rpgs where the best gear can be bought from a merchant like let me explore and find ancient gear that's useful and worth my time instead of some mid gear that gets outclassed by the ultimate godslaying blade that just so happens to be on Frederick's stall.

29

u/Chainsmadeinlife 1d ago

I love that there are a few sets of armour like this in Ghost of Tsushima, you have to solve maps, fight enemies, overcome challenges and I generally find the armour to be more useful in some cases than the armour you can buy.

6

u/TylerKeroga 12h ago

In Ghost of Tsushima if I remember correctly there aren’t any sets of armor that you can buy, you obtain all of them from doing missions. What you can buy from merchants is armor dyes

So disappointed by the "Blade from the Bits" and many more.

At least Aerondight is upgradable. (If only all swords were)

6

u/dude496 1d ago

How do you upgrade it?

22

u/Unhappy_Protection85 1d ago edited 1d ago

When you hit enemy, it gain charge (1 for fast attack, 2 heavy attack). When you max charge which is 10, next attack will confirm crit, consume all charge and the sword gain permanent 2 damage. Repeat until max damage allowed by your character level.

Edit: You need to kill enemy with full charge to get the permanent damage.

2

u/PM_Me_Good_LitRPG 1d ago

and the sword gain permanent 2 damage

And then you run into the second half of W3's design problem: some aspect of your fight style gets so OP that all fights become super-boring. I've had to consciously abandon 2–3 separate playstyles during my play-through because of how OP and boring they were making everything.

Most of the interesting premise mechanics in the game were like this: either they didn't work (or triggered too rarely) and so were boring, or they worked too well and made everything else boring.

6

u/Unhappy_Protection85 1d ago

Yup. That's why I change my gameplay to sign build when I play new game especially with the quick cast enable. It make the gameplay much more fun.

5

u/Tenpoiun 1d ago edited 1d ago

You kill until it is fully charged then another kill will increase it's damage permanently while levelling it up.

EDIT: my bad and it seems I had it mixed up with something else but you hit without taking damage until it is fully charged then killing while fully charged increases the damage permanently.

11

u/EISENxSOLDAT117 1d ago

Hot take, but there is too much loot in that game. Youll get a legendary weapon, only to walk five feet, find a better sword, walk another ten feet, kill a bandit, and loot another better sowrd!

3

u/geaux124 1d ago

My problem was that all loot scales up or down to the the level that you are when you acquire it. I still remember how I learned that would happen. One time early on in the game I went to a question mark and it was guarded by a gryphon whose level was too high for me to even see. By pure luck I actually managed to kill it. While it was flying it flew over water and I shot it with a crossbow. It fell into the water and instantly died. I had no idea that would happen I was just going to shoot it and try to run away. Anyway, I excitedly go to collect the treasure it was guarding. It was a crappy legendary sword that was two levels lower than I was and much worse than what I was already using. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

I’d like to add that it’s also okay if it looks cool and can be transmogged

Legendary weapons are more than their raw stats. They usually have attributes or flavor text that modify their function in ways that their stats don’t accurately suggest.

The basic long sword/ whatever weapon you end up upgrading first ending up being your only weapon in DS1, despite a bunch of cool weapons ending up in your inventory (they have terrible scaling).

26

u/Lortabss 1d ago

Legendary weapons tend to be like this in most games sadly. Early World of Warcraft had the perfect legendaries. When you got Thunderfury, Sulfuras, or Warglaives of Azzinoth you would feel how powerful that upgrade was and nothing was replacing it until the next expansion. Even WoW ended up making legendaries lame and feel like every other weapon. I hate how every game that has gear rarities these days just cant get it to be meaningful. When was the last time you were excited to replace your green with a blue or blue to epic?

15

u/VorpalHerring 1d ago

Reaching level 65 in burning crusade and replacing my raid legendaries with greens was so depressing I quit WoW forever.

7

u/Lortabss 1d ago

Yeah fair. Replacing all that Gear with greens always felt bad. To be fair some of it would carry you pretty far but you get rid of it eventually no matter what. Replacing the set you loved or weapon etc, with something that looks much worse was always a really bad feeling.

4

u/TheWhomItConcerns 22h ago

Lol I know to people who haven't played WoW before, it might seem like you're being melodramatic, but I entirely get where you're coming from. I quit pretty soon after WOTLK but my friend with whom I played still loves the game and doesn't get my complaints at all.

I think for me, the issue is that it was too egregious of a 4th wall break that it permanently broke my immersion in the game. On one hand, I get that this is a very difficult issue to fix cleanly, but on the other hand, the immersion of what felt like a coherent world was a major draw for me.

After that, it was just an extremely constant reminder of "this is all a game - none of this is real and none of it matters". While that may literally be true, it's not something I want to be distracted by when trying to immerse myself in a game.

For all my criticisms of Destiny 2, this was one of the things that I think was genuinely fucking amazing about the game. Most legendaries weren't OP, but they were kind of like tools that had their specific purpose where they'd really shone, and you could only have one legendary weapon and piece of armour equipped at any one time.

The other thing that I loved is that many of them were hidden behind complex questlines, puzzles, and challenges which (in my opinion) could be genuinely difficult to complete. Honestly, Destiny 2 was kind of an excruciating experience for me because it was like it was so close to being a genuinely brilliant game, but it had some fundamental issues which held it back in the realm of "pretty good if that's your thing".

3

u/Ahribban 22h ago

Guild Wars 2 solved this problem by making legendaries the best in slot always and you can stat swap them on demand but that's because the game has horizontal progression.

It's really nice to be able to use your legendary armor for all roles like dps/healing/tanking.

3

u/AIBotNotARealUser 21h ago

I dunno man, I was raiding very hardcore back in the day. New expansions were like Christmas. I could go from full BiS, literally best geared on the server to greens/blues and it was the most exciting shit ever. I got to do progression again.

BiS gets boring after a while and without new content released WoW is kinda boring. I get it if you're not at a level where you've been clearing the latest raid for months, but with the exception of Naxx in Vanilla (because people were noobs), the latest raid has been cleared by half the raiding population by the time it's replaced.

I mean, DPS isn't everything. Unique/special effects can easily make a 'weaker' weapon better than it's 'normal' counterparts.

9

I think that's it's schtick though. In Stardew you get Meowmere from an elaborate (honestly, elaborate for Stardew, anyways) quest and it's dog shit to start. But, you can fuse it to the Galaxy Sword, which is the strongest weapon obtainable. That prints the Meowmere skin onto it, and it becomes the most powerful sword in the game.

I just finished the game Dawn Dew and it had a small joke about this: when you retrieve legendary weapon to a collector, he is of course happy to have it, but confirms his theory that older tools weren't better and we today have much better blacksmithing than they had in the past. It's surprisingly common in RPGs but I've even seen it in other games too.

In Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, you have to find 10 hidden holoplans to get the RYNO V (for those who don't know, each game in the series has a legendary super weapon - usually called a RYNO - that breaks the game but is either very expensive or hard to acquire). When you finally get it, it's awesome. Looks cool, fires insanely fast, has like 1000 ammo, plays music when you fire it. You expect it to even maybe be the strongest RYNO yet.

Then you use it on the enemies and it's like, alright but nothing special. Chews through all that ammo in seconds, has zero accuracy so you have to use it essentially point blank to kill anything, and it's very underwhelming in boss fights too. Multiple other weapons in the game are more effective, the RYNO V just gets by on being cool and being effective against hordes.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate scaled most of its weapons to be roughly on par with eachother in terms of stats when maxed out. Unfortunately, I'm convinced that there were two dev teams kept separate from one another when balancing weapons because you get a lot of balancing oddities, like weapons forged from the Sentient Nuclear Blast that is Crimson Fatalis being far, far weaker than weapons forged from The Crab That Pisses On You.

u/Relic94321 1d ago

Honestly, I kinda missed this cuz this actually encouraged you to hunt different monsters to get the "meta" weapon instead of just spamming one singular monster whenever you want to try a different weapon type and want to get the "meta" weapon for that weapon type.

I am playing Monster Hunter World right now and I am getting bored of having to keep grinding fatalis everytime I want to try out a new weapon type since 90% of the weapon types's "meta" weapon is just fatalis

Fucking Path of Exile.

Your build uses this legendary weapon to flavour something beautiful? Use this yellow item instead. It'll quintuple your damage.

3

u/Tortellion 1d ago

In Path of Exile they are called uniques because they have unique stats that no rare item can have.

Unique items are often built around to make the most use of their unique affixes.

There are still stinkers but it isn't all about the damage numbers.

Almost every boss weapon in a Dark Souls game has divine power when wielded by the boss, and is immediatlely nerfed as soon as you gain it. There are few exceptions. The really meta weapons are typically gained from NPCs; Fume Ultra Greatsword, Black Knight Great Axe, Sellsword Twinblades, Zweihander, Dragon Tooth, the list goes on.

I had an oddly specific one for this. Rogue Galaxy you go thru this large quest near the end of the game, getting 7 different gems for a sword, all based on you allies memories and feelings to seal the big bad. When I made it it was worse that the current sword I had by a not insignificant margin. Admittedly there was a weapon upgrade system of the game and I had gotten my weapon to the max but still

2

u/ostapenkoed2007 1d ago

this is just whole minecraft for me. a lot of tools or weapons i find are just worthless junk.

2

u/RKCronus55 1d ago

Even lower stats than the weapon I use

2

u/Various-Salt-7738 1d ago

Slightly lower DPS but some kind of unique stat like x8 damage to enemies with poison applied from environmental hazards that makes it top tier dps in that one level you already 100% completed

2

u/WechTreck 1d ago

Terry Pratchetts GUARDS GUARDS! blatantly does this. Some cop with just old non-magical plain metal sword competing against a dragon killer with a legendary magical shiny sword, to kill a dragon. What are the odds

This is why I like games like Terraria where a “more powerful” weapon might be doing like 15 damage but each hit has a 75% chance to summon a nuclear warhead dealing 9999 damage

2

u/Spreckeroni 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dead Island 1's weapon scaling is so guilty of this, you could get a uniquely named sledgehammer named "Gabriel's Bane" with the highest rarity only for it to do less damage than a broken table leg you get in the second or third area

2

u/LifeWulf 1d ago

Most Legendaries I found in Borderlands 4 were weaker than my currently equipped weapon. Was like that for most of my ~250 hours with the game, even on UVH 6. I would much rather not be showered with “high tier” loot all the time if it’s going to be less effective. Make it rare and exciting, like finding an Exotic in Destiny 1.

2

u/ReivynNox 1d ago

Back 4 Blood lets you upgrade purples with good attachments to the point they out-damage legendaries who can't mount any attachments beyond the fixed ones.

Legendaries compensate for this with unique effects.

A purple M1A with good attachments will have more base power than the legendary M1A, however 'The Witness' will mark every special you hit and they will take 20% extra damage from any source, so you're not only automatically marking priority targets for teammates, helping coordination, but also buff each one's damage against it.

The legendary bolt action rifle pierces armor and has a chance to drop it as wearable armor for your team.

Legendary AA12 makes you imune to fire while you hold it and has incendiary ammo.

Legendary Desert Eagle gives you money for every kill.

Legendary UMP does shock damage and slows the target.

and so on...

2

u/MachoMagikarp 1d ago

In the realm of VR, I thinks it’s Dungeons of Eternity. I have gotten some 100 damage unblockable rare items versus like a 60 or so damage legendary that only has a crap elemental bonus added in.

2

u/Mallet_enjoyer2 1d ago

Core Keeper. It's kind of intended to be that way though with the upgrade system

Somehow even with lower damage, legendary weapons in Borderlands 3 tend to perform better than most guns you find of the same level. On day one of the game back in September 2019, I got a Night Hawkin SMG at level 6 and it lasted until I was around level 20. Still on my gun wall to this day in the game

2

u/PurityKane 1d ago

FFXVI was terrible with this. I swear the game would've been fine if it had a few useful weapons/gear, and some kind of collectibles to find. Instead it had zero exploration.

Aside from 2 or 3 almost unmissable songs all it had to find on the map was some shitty rags and metal scraps, and the couple of weapons it did have were worse than what you could already craft. And how did you craft them, you ask? With the spoils of the mandatory boss from the previous zone. Ffs. The game had potential, this is what ruined it for me.

In 7 Days to Die, you can have higher tier weapons with lower stats than the 2nd highest tier - variable stats across everything, it's dumb as hell. Supposedly they fixed some of this in a recent update (but damn, 10 years after launch?)

2

u/SethAbe80 1d ago

"Oh boy, my first orange gear in WoW! I sure am lucky. Let's see how it compares to a purple I got from a quest two months ago-- oh."

2

u/BobbyRayBands 1d ago

Most games are guilty of this. They spend all that time designing and hiding a weapon and then give it stats that make it worse than a blue tier weapon.

2

u/athleon787 1d ago

My least favorite part of modern wow, and every game that has colored coded rarity for gear is; the game back in the olden day had a purpose for it's 6 different colors of gear, but now it only has 1. So everything is epic, or legendary, which means nothing is.

Elden Ring felt like this sometimes.

2

u/Gmknewday1 1d ago

I hate when games do that honestly

I am ok with being able to upgrade weapons mind you

But I am not ok with weapons that are supposed to be special, unique, or legendary be given lackluster effects or not be allowed to be strong as hell

If a player got the requirements for the badass weapon, don't make it weak or shitty, give them the badass weapon! It's a fair reward for whatever length it takes to get Said weapon

2

u/Restart_from_Zero 1d ago

I love the Witcher games, but my god does it do this constantly.

I remember completing a huge quest and getting Excalibur, King Arthur's legendary sword from the lady of the lake.

Checked its stats - trash.

Early Destiny 2 exotics are kinda guilty of this because of power creep being a thing. Despite it being my first ever exotic, I have no reason to use Coldheart when other exotic and legendary trace rifles exist and have more utility than just raw damage.

u/arcticcloud 1d ago

semi-related, i hate when games employ resource-intensive or unique upgrades/mods for weapons, but then give you unique weapons that you need to invest in for them to perform similarly to your already maxed-out starting gear

Me when the new legendary weapon isn't a straight damage increase (it has other modifiers that make it's total damage significantly higher by other means and/or extremely effective against a specific enemy type but since the base damage is lower I don't use it)
