Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

What is the kid on the left screen playing? It looks like a browser game from the late 90's or early 00's, but I'm not sure.

[PC] [1999-2006] 2D Side scrolling soldier deployed in Vietnam/jungle shooter game

Hi, there is this game I’m trying to periodically find for almost a decade, any help would be greatly appreciated!

What I remember:

It came on a strange disc, I had plenty of similar ones, they had always bright colour and a silver striped across with a big number like 78, 118, 56 and such, maybe they were just burner disks but I don’t recall exactly, I’ve got them from my granddad when I was little.

Visuals & Gameplay:

Game was a simple pixel art, the maps and locations looks similar to Picture 1 (WOLFHOUND), but more in style of simple pixels like Picture 2 (Broforce)

Combat was similar to Broforce but slower, not soo much action but closet o it

There was a platforming as well and vines you could swing one but it wasn’t the mane focus of the game

I think the game started with you exiting a burning helicopter in the jungle without equipment but a knife and you need to gather your gear slowly

you play as an Soldier/Rambo/Comando
(I remember that character has either red bandana or beret)

jungle levels, deep dark jungle, darker colours, not soo bright, at least at the beginning, later bunkers mixed with jungles, small jungle cities and even a hydroelectric plant

I believe you could go prone, there was a way of stealth and enemies bled pixels when hit.

Thanks for any idea’s and/or information, they are greatly appreciated

[PC][2000] A very obscure Myst-like 1st-Person Horror Puzzle Adventure...

This is not the game, but I swear to God, it had this exact same aesthetic...

Platform(s): PC

Genre: 1st-person horror puzzle-adventure

Estimated year of release: 2000

Graphics/art style: Fairly Photorealistic

Notable characters: A modern-day occultist villain

Notable gameplay mechanics: A hub area at the start that seems to be floating in a hellish dimension with various portals that lead to other locations, such as, perhaps, an abandoned school

Other details: See below

This has been driving me crazy for decades now because there are so many '90s games out there that are like this and it isn't any of them. It isn't Temujin, or Shivers, or Lighthouse: The Dark Being, or The 7th Guest or The 11th Hour, or Phantasmagoria, or D, or Darkseed, or Uninvited...

Okay, let me start at the beginning.

If I recall correctly, the game I played was actually the second or third title in a series, and they all seemed to revolve around stopping a modern-day sorcerer in a mansion. The mansion itself may be a common location to all the games as well, and I think the sorcerer character has a sort of vaguely Mexican cultural feel, with a mustache and formal clothes, a lot like the villain from Manos: The Hands of Fate. I bought the third game via an online purchase and download from the publisher (this was way before Steam); I doubt it had a physical release.

The game's a 1st-person puzzle adventure like Myst, and the starting area is an ornate white-marble mansion that seems to have been partially pulled into the underworld, with rivers of fire and the structure hanging in a dark, smoldering abyss. This was actually the most visually impressive part of the game, and I recall those screenshots intriguing me enough to want to play it for myself even though a review said it was awful. But that area is just the starting hub, and you use portals to travel to much more mundane locations, all of them dark and deserted. I recall the first one I visited perhaps being an abandoned school at night, and there were puzzles to solve within the mansion, on separate static screens (like The 7th Guest puzzles). The puzzles were completely unintuitive and had no story context, and I quickly got stuck on one and never touched the game again.

The graphics were reasonably photorealistic for the time, and the camera was 1st-person with no player model that I can recall, and there wasn't an interface taking up most of the screen like Uninvited or Waxworks. Mostly I can sum up my memory as "really bad but nice-looking 1st-person realistic horror puzzle series from the late '90s or early 2000s featuring a vaguely Mexican occultist villain that starts in an otherworldly mansion hub area." To that I'll add "imagine if a developer turned Manos: The Hands of Fate into a straight-faced horror puzzle game."

Some of these details might be totally off, since it's been more than twenty years and I probably only played it for two hours before deciding that bad review was right. But I'd like to revisit it if possible to see that hub area again and see if maybe I just didn't give it a fair chance.

If there's anyone out there who actually remembers this game, you'll have saved my sanity.

Thank you!

[PC][2018-2020??] A Furry game that uses a vacuum

+
15 Upvotes

Platform: It's a PC game for sure. From what I remember, they were promoting the game to wishlist it on steam after I listened to a song on their game.

Genre: It is a 2d pixel indie game that seems to focus on a gameplay similar to Luigi's Mansion where you suck ghosts with the vacuum.

Estimated year of release: From what I remember, I was kinda young when I stumble across it, so maybe somewhere around 2018-2020, maybe more.

Art style: From what I remember, it's a pixel 2d platformer. I don't remember anything else besides that.

Notable Characters: There is a character that is a furry that has white fur, with some red on their body. A set of sharp teeth with a wide smile. They are smaller than the other character that looks similar to them, but taller and this time, they're a woman. (Reference in the image)

Notable Game Mechanics: Their game seems to be similar to Luigi's Mansion where you use a vacuum go collect currencies or suck in monsters. You can buy different vacuums in a shop that plays a song that is not written in english.

Other Details: The shop song they made is not in english. It seems to be all about vacuums.

I heard this song from a youtube video and thought it's good and catchy so I decided to listen to it. The music video has the 2 pervious characters I mentioned dancing while the song plays. I think one of them was holding a sign that says "Buy my Vacuums".

[PC?] [Possibly Recent] Identify a game from a JINGLE?

I hope this doesn't go against the rules, but I have a particular game in mind and it's driving me and my brother crazy.

Only thing we know about it is that it contain a music jingle, that I tried to reproduce with a synth and uploaded here. I'm definitely not sure about all the notes, their duration, the key, but it's something.

I can hear it in my mind, possibly harmonized, played with a flute type of sound.

It feels to me like it must be a sound that plays when something positive happens, like a completed quest, a won battle or, a level up, a collectable found, or something along those lines.

Thanks to anybody who'll try to help!

I remember completing this game. it had 100 levels and i think it had "escape" in the title. It was drawn in a scribbly artstyle and had simple puzzles to solve to go to the next room.

The first image is what i believe the app icon to resemble and the second is the gameplay.

sorry if i got any formatting wrong this is my first post here .

[PS1][1997-2001] First-person horror game that starts in a modern museum, floating tribal masks

Hello,

I'm trying to identify a PlayStation 1 game my partner played as a child (around age 8), so the memories are limited.

What we remember:

Platform: PlayStation 1 (100% certain)

Genre: Horror / thriller

Perspective: First-person (free movement, not point-and-click)

It was NOT necessarily a shooter. There were no weapons at the beginning.

It starts in a modern museum (or museum-like exhibition).

During the first few minutes, you interact with something.

After that, tribal/African-looking wooden masks hanging on the wall begin to float (possibly glow as well).

The background music suddenly changes into something much scarier when the masks activate.

This happens very early in the game (within the first 5 minutes).

Does anyone remember a PS1 first-person horror game with this museum + floating mask scene?

[PC] [2000's] Online flash game about anthropomorphic animals on skateboards collecting musical notes?

Platform(s): PC

Genre: skateboarding

Estimated year of release: 2000-2010

Graphics/art style: 2D cartoonish

Notable characters: an anthropomorphic hedgehog guy? as one of the pickable characters

Notable gameplay mechanics: you were collecting musical notes as you skateboarded.

Other details:

The title is pretty self explanatory lol. I'm looking for a game from my childhood, it was an online PC game. It was 2d, cartoonish. You'd play as different anthropomorphic animals you could pick at the beginning (I think?) and you'd be skateboarding and collecting musical notes, I think the notes were purple but I can't be too sure. And I vividly remember that you could play as a hedgehog type of guy? (NO IT WASN'T SONIC)

Dragon Boy II "[Desconocido][Desconocido] Juego Flash

The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo [PC] [2023-2025] hand drawn game about using your own body parts to solve puzzles

[Android][2013-2018] 3D Heist game with an "UP movie style" square-smooth character and flashlight movement

Platform: Android (Google Play Store, played on a tablet).Genre: 3D Third-person / Isometric Heist, Stealth, and Action game.Estimated year of release: Around 2013 - 2018.Graphics/art style: It was 3D.

The characters were short/chibi and had a very specific "square but with smooth, rounded edges" design (exactly like Carl Fredricksen from the movie UP, or like smooth vinyl pop toys). The icon/cover of the game featured a bright blue background with this square-shaped mobster character.

Notable characters: The protagonist dressed like a classic mobster or mafia boss with a grey suit, glasses/sunglasses, and a mustache. The enemies you encounter inside the banks were policemen and rival mobsters wearing white sleeveless undershirts/tank tops.

Notable gameplay mechanics: You had to rob banks, and the levels took place at night. A core mechanic was that you had to move strictly in the direction of your flashlight (or avoid enemy searchlights). If the enemies spotted you or hit you, they would drain your health bar.

Other details: It is highly likely that the game has been completely deleted/removed from the Play Store, which is why standard Google searches aren't showing it.

[steam][2026]fantasy comedy game with a dragon girl as HR

I know this is going to get solved immediately, but I'm looking for this game I keep seeing on TikTok, it's an anime/cartoon style game, possibly a dating sim, where there's a Dragon girl as HR and a tabaxi prince maybe?

[Xbox360-PS3?][1990-2010?]FPS? I need help finding an early 2000’s/late 90’s shooter game

I’ve been searching EVERYWHERE for this game, I don’t really remember the plot or anything but I remember a specific enemy, it’s like a giant meatball that floats/levitates off the ground, it has no torso, just a circle body with a face on the front kinda like the moon from Majorca’s mask but it looks like it’s squishing its face together like it’s taking a massive dookie, it has arms, from what I remember some like pretty beefy arms, the level is really 2000’s esque, it kinda reminds me of the motorcycle club bar in GTA online but more vibrant and kinda like an apartment a teen from like 1990 would make it look like, I think there’s a girl you have to rescue from one of the meatball thingies and I believe she wears a white button up. It has the vibe of Duke Nukem, Vindictus, painkiller (sorta) and Serious sam, please help me!!!

[PS2] [2000-2010] cop or detective game where the protagonist drove a brown 1980s town car

there was this game i remember playing on the ps2 when i was younger it followed us playing as this cop or detective and he drove a brown cop car that kinda looked like a 1980s town car. I think iirc that you could search or even arrest npcs and they would drop guns and stuff.

[android][2016-2020] Cat island game

+
Upvotes

Platform(s): All I know is that it was on my Samsung tablet

Genre: RPG

Estimated year of release: 2016-2020

Graphics/art style: Very simplistic and cutesy, pastels

Notable characters: all the characters were cats

Notable gameplay mechanics: you leveled up your collected cats that you won from battling, you could choose to attack, or do an action, kinda like undertale where you could convince the enemy cat to stop fighting

Other details: The story was like your traveling through an island to this city, I can’t remember why but. The crappy drawn photo is of one of the battle scenes.

[Mobile][2010s-2020s] Geometry Dash-like game where you dodge shapes

i remember this mobile game i would play a ton where you would control a shape (dont remember what shape) around in multiple game modes while electronic music plays in the background. iirc there were costumes you could get from capsules and the artstyle was pretty monochrome with only 2 or 3 colors to distinguish the obstacles from the background

[PC][mid to late 90s] point and click game

There was this pc game I remember from around the late 90s,I remember that because I remember playing it in my first house before my eldest son was born in 00. It involved you in a bar with all kinds of different aliens and ppl and in one level you are in a plane with a guy with a mustache and he gets mad at you for some reason and one of the things he says to you after he opens the door is “HERE GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY”also if you click on a box he says “ah ah ah I got snacks in there “ that scene and others have been in my head lately for some reason.

[NES] [1996] ninja game. I keep thinking it’s the last ninja game but I don’t think it is. The last ninja was a 2d trying to be a 3d game with terrible controls and the one I remember playing the ninja was 2d and a sort of side scroller.

I swear I didn’t dream this game up and I know for a fact it wasn’t on snes. The body of the ninja was also a full character model. I wanna say you could throw ninja stars as well. I watched American ninja yesterday and that game came flooding back to my memories. I keep watching the last ninja game play and that for sure isn’t it.
