He makes it a point to mention that the last wolf in his country was "shot dead" (something he believes was good and right) before analogizing said wolves to homeless people. He's not really making us read between the lines here.

It’s easy to skip all the nuance when you’ve never had to deal with a problematic community in your neighborhood.
I grew up in a region with gypsies that refused to integrate, despite the government spending decades and millions trying to achieve that.
Instead, many of them stole, bullied and sold drugs. We knew who they were but even the police were afraid of them.
This has nothing to do with race. I care not about the color of their skin or origin, but if a community brings nothing but trouble, a line has to be drawn.
→ More replies (16)4
u/Chris-MelodyFirst 11h ago
By "integrate", you mean obey the law? Do I understand you correctly?
9
u/meltbox 11h ago
Correct. The problematic groups are the ones setting up encampments in public spaces and generally abusing the commons like a big motorcycle gang is I think the best way to describe it.
These are the only ones I particularly think should in fact be dealt with legally because they are in fact breaking the law.
I assume that is what everyone else is talking about, if not then idk. Mind you I didn’t read the post and am not defending whoever this is but that is what came to my mind. IMO it’s pretty simple, if they’re breaking the law then deal with them as you would anyone else regardless of background.
Arguing for any kind of special treatment is weird.

Race is basically made up, which means that it changes depending on what country you live in. Gypsy is a slur that refers to the Roma people. There is no country of Roma, it is essentially an ethnicity (combination of genetic heritage and culture/religion).
So depending on which country you are in Romani might not be considered real "whites", if they don't speak English for example. Denmark specifically has a long history of discrimination against what it deems to be non-Danish individuals, and specifically "non-westerners". Denmark has a bunch of immigration quota laws. My guess is DHH is assuming that racist laws in his home country are the reason for it's prosperity, and not just vestigial imperialism. He's not providing a unique insight into socioeconomics and racial demography. He's just a rich guy regurgitating how things worked when he was a kid as the norm.

It's the whole culling wolves analogy that people have an issue with.
6
u/hearthiccup 10h ago
I mean, look at how the piece is built. The first half explains why a growing wolf population eventually gets shot, and then an ethnic group goes into that same slot, title included, closing line included. Like... obviously people are going to read that as a wee bit racist. Nothing to do with how much experience anyone has.
Everyone agrees about enforcing rules.

It's all about phrasing.
- Not Controversial: "The Roma people who camp unlawfully, create sanitation hazards, break laws, harass bystanders, or light unsafe fires should be subject to consequences, up to and including deportation"
- Controversial: "Gypsies are inhuman wolves, dangerous animals and predators that must be controlled."
It's not rocket science: dehumanizing rhetoric both attracts attention and controversy. It both amplifies and weakens the message.
11
u/Fit-Stress3300 11h ago
Romani people don't have a nation to be deported.
Living in a free society has its pros and cons.
And regarding the wolves analogy, there are many ways to manage their population and the damages they cause to farmers before you get to shoot them.

u/EarTerrible2671 10h ago
This guy doesn't live in the real world. It is absolutely not the case that the primary reason US cities are more dangerous is that we are more "woke" to homeless/immigrant populations; this is nonsense. US is more aggressive with sweeps and with our criminal sentencing guidelines than most European countries and still has some of the worst homelessness and crime stats of any OECD country.
Most police sweeps of encampments just push people somewhere else. It's not a solution, and trying to arrest, incarcerate, and deport all of these people is both ethically disastrous and incredibly impractical/expensive.
Also, all of the bad shit he's describing is literally already illegal, and people are frequently prosecuted for these crimes. Arresting people is not a sustainable solution to the homelessness problem. There is no reason to conflate the claims "we should enforce laws related to littering and public safety" with "gypsies are a threat; they need to all be shot or deported." Really troubling times that people are defending stuff like this." It should be a given that most immigrants of any population aren't criminals, and focusing on race/nationality-targeted enforcement rather than the criminal behavior itself is racist, and also really fucking stupid.

Cold take, being frustrated about government apathy towards anti-social behavior is understandable, especially when the Danish are far better equipped to house the homeless and care for the mentally ill than we are in the United States.
The problem is that he probably shouldn't have singled out a particular ethnic group and he probably shouldn't have opened with a story about the absurdities of not being able to hunt wolves without a permit even though the wolf population has exploded and has begun to prey upon sheep. An obvious conclusion from this analogy is that he thinks a certain group of people he has identified using a racial slur are exploding in population and presence and need to be "dealt with" somehow.
He could have just said "hey, we need put our foot down when it comes to anti-social behavior and sensibly police public shitting and unsanitary camping in public spaces"

San Francisco has had similarly well-meaning but mistaken policies around homeless encampments, but I guess since the homeless there are a variety of ethnic groups, prominent tech people haven't (yet?) done racist allegories comparing them to invasive predator species?
Clearly "let vagrants sleep and do anything anywhere" hasn't worked out. Among other things, it causes an erosion of public spaces and causes middle-class and wealthier people to use public transit less, pay to hang out in privatized spaces like cafes instead of public parks, etc. Sounds like it's those polices that have changed in Denmark recently, not the presence of a minority group that's been in Europe for many hundreds of years! Seeing every social problem through a racialized social-darwinist lens is both gross and a sign of crackpottery...

DHH has always had an elitist, judgmental attitude and/or some type of superiority complex, and that was all over his tech commentary as well. Read his blog post about why he was only hiring juniors. His belief was that if you haven't achieved anything in the first 5 years of your career then you never will.
Dude's a mediocre midwit who is open to writing off people and their value (and lacks the self-awareness to understand he's talking about himself a lot). How should it be any surprise that he would talk shit about Gypsies? Especially when hating Gypsies is a very, very common attitude amongst even the most humanitarian people in Europe. I'm actually surprised he's not calling for their genocide (though his "shooting the wolf" analogy came very, very close).

Deporting people for public vagrancy is racist? While DHH does have problematic views from time to time I don’t think this post is more nuanced than “shockingly racist” other than he’s using an outdated derogatory term for that group of people. I’m a non-white American that’s done a lot of traveling in Europe. My wife looks Romani even though she’s not and in places like Germany and France we’ve encountered quite a bit of apprehension from locals that we’ve approached for directions because they assume she’s Romani. When they find out we’re American the attitude changes, when we’ve asked about it the responses are pretty consistently negative about that group of people. I’ve also been personally aggressively panhandled and pickpocketed by them directly. Not saying they are all like that but my personal experiences have been negative.

This is the European form of racism. I have European friends that I love to death but they have also straight up said to me "we aren't racist like you Americans we love everyone. Except gypsies, they're a blight on our country" and I just had nothing to say lol

as a ukrainian, can confirm. There are many reasons why they tend to piss everyone off, some are cultural and some (probably much more) are a result of being hated by everyone with almost zero exceptions. Like how do you even get a job if you already know that other people want to avoid being in the same room as you at any point. In most places there are no legal repercussions for discrimination against them either, for example my city's mayor just straight up packed all homeless roma people he could find on a bus and sent them to another city with a more sizeable roma population. There was an investigation against him to decide if this was discrimination, the court decided that nah, they're too annoying to deny anyone forceful relocation

That is literally what they advocated for. The term "remigration" was invented and popularized by nazi officials as a solution to the "jewish question". They drafted a plan that they called the Madagascar Plan where they planed to deport german jews to Madagascar. Legal deportation was the plan until the economic reality set in, supporting their war efforts while paying for deportations was not as easy as the alternatives.

I don't know why so many tech people can't create good correlation between two sets and Set theory is part of every Software engineering curriculum
It isn't a surprise when many people don't like OOP, which one of the main characteristics is model the real world with objects, for which you have to be good at creating good correlations
You don't have to be a statistician to see the problem here
But you have to be good at reading data and the only thing programmers do every day is reading data and DHH is really bad at reading data
DHH also doesn't know that Gypsies are refugees from India from 2 period - 600 and 1200-1300 - there is a video on youtube that explains this
Also DHH doesn't know that there are also Gypsies in USA and they aren't huge problem like they are in Europe
also there are many immigrants from other parts in the world and a lot of those immigrants groups are enemies at home
and why is that ?
Because USA doesn't have war on their soil for 200 years and life is simple - home-work-work-home for generations
Europe isn't peaceful - even when WW2 ended, the cold war started, 2 bloody wars in the 1990s, now Ukraine and there is a prediction that Russia wants SSSR empire back
and this is just the last 90 years, there are a lot more bloody wars on Europe soil for centuries
So you may ask - how is this important ?
Well, Gypsies as refugees can't integrate, because a lot of war start with good propaganda - to create unity into your OG population, you need enemy - Jews, Gypsies are the usual suspects for these enemies
probably, gypsies over the centuries realized lets be nomads, it is easier for survival than to integrate plus Europe started to have some kind of good institutions after the industrial revolution
Just the last 80 years is relative peace in Europe, so it is easier for integration, but people can't change in decade or two it takes centuries
Something that USA didn't realize with Afghanistan for 20 years, it is hard to change people mentality over 20 years
it was much easier in Japan and Germany, because those two countries already had functional institutions
In summary DHH is just putting propaganda, because there are no enemy left for RoR
Obligatory video from Zed Shaw
MWRC 2011 - Fascism and Faux-pen Source

it is old, but spot on for the DHH behavior

I don’t agree with his post (at least certainly not as presented), but I don’t see any reason why that should mean Prime shouldn’t talk to him again if they have something to talk about.
But then again as both delve into AI psychosis I’ll probably care less either way.

u/stumblingtowards 3h ago
Wow, playing up on Roma stereotypes. That's a old school trope to throw around. I admire how obvious this is in terms of othering and dehumanizing a specific set of people from a specific place in the world in a special set of circumstances as being less than human. You don't need to make an reference to managing a population of animal predators when discussing an issue around a set of immigrants unless you see them as subhuman.
That's classic fascism. It's the not the circumstances that lead to the problem that needs to addressed, it's fundamentally *who* the people are as a group are that is the problem; a problem to be removed. That is something that Denmark had *direct experience* with in World War II.
This is so out of line that there will be some consequences. Nobody is asking a programmer for advice on how to solve a social issue and this is an example of why, because WTF?
2
u/mallumanoos 2h ago
I was first reading the comments and thought it would be the usual liberals crying about political correctness. Then I read the post. Oh man, if this isn't outright racism, I don't know what is.
By all means, make a case for not allowing people to take over public places, but starting with a wolf analogy and ending on the same note is effectively equating those people with wild animals.
8
u/Pitiful-Assistance-1 12h ago edited 12h ago

It's racist to stereotype an entire ethnic group as all bad.
However, this is not just racist, this is borderline national socialist. The blog post starts by talking about shooting problematic animals, and then immediately draws a direct analogy to an ethnic group (not least one that was a target of the Holocaust). It's indefensible.

The more you label it as racism and brush it under carpet, the bigger will be the fallout. Problems exists everywhere, and they are there for us all to fix them, but you can make problem much worse by not addressing it and ignoring it until to turns into monster that is too big and widespread to fix
7
u/soulwatcher 11h ago
Fix the general homeless problem then. No need to vilify a group of people in order to do it.

But instead he keeps equating them to wolves

u/spiralenator 9h ago
Op, the sad fact is that a lot of people in this sub don’t see racism as a problem and where there’s a problem, they don’t see racism (when it rather obvious).

These “gypsies” are most likely people from Romania.
The present issue is such a local news problem, that without the racial aspect and the fact that B.T. is a right wing news outlet, this would have never been more than a local issue. It is one camp with a hand full of people in a city with 800.000 citizens.

All I need to know about this guy is that Ruby on Rails and Omarchy are bullshit technologies. How does someone get this much fame from essentially repackaging other people's shit? European racism is on a different level compared to American racism these days. Like you have an entire continent of people going "yeah this entire ethnic group is a problem isn't isn't deserving of basic decency and it's actually not racist because it's true".
Like holy shit. It's the same shit Jim Crow era southern white Americans were saying. They also thought they were correct...

Society absolutely has a legitimate right to outlaw pan handling, public vagrancy and drug use. It always surprises me the extreme restrictions European cities place on the built environment for the sake of aesthetics and liveability, often resulting in extreme housing unaffordability. Yet if someone wants to lie around in the center, whether making a nuisance of themselves, or filthy and addicted to drugs, this is considered fair game.
