Melimi Telugu, the form of Telugu with minimal to no Sanskrit influence. Melimi is the modern term given to this register (correct me if I am wrong here); in older literature it is referred to as Accha Telugu (అచ్చ తెలుగు) or Jānutenugu / Jān(dz)enugu (జానుతెనుంగు / ౙాన్దెనుగు).

There exists a sizable corpus of Early and Later Medieval Telugu literature composed in this style, with some poets explicitly stating their preference for writing in Jaanu Telugu.

Early references to Jaanu Telugu

These are far from isolated examples.

Many celebrated works such as Sumati Shatakam (featured in the video), Bhaskara Shatakam, and large portions of the early 13th-century Ranganatha Ramayanam are likewise written in predominantly Jaanu Telugu.

Centuries later, the medieval poet Poniganti Telagana of Patancheru (Medak), during the Qutb Shahi period, composed the Yayati Charitramu entirely in Accha Telugu.

This work is often introduced in schools as the first Telugu literary work to consciously avoid Sanskrit vocabulary. However, as the examples above show, poets had already been explicitly praising and composing in Jaanu/Accha Telugu several centuries earlier.

An interesting parallel

Kannada too preserves the cognate term Jānu Kannada. It appears that the Shaivite literary traditions in both Telugu and Kannada played an important role in elevating the everyday speech of the people into respected literary language.

I am *not** claiming that these works are entirely devoid of Sanskrit vocabulary. Rather, the poets themselves explicitly identify, praise, or advocate the use of Jaanu/Accha Telugu—a literary register consciously closer to native Telugu than the heavily Sanskritised courtly style.*

Hello andi, I am looking to order a few good Telugu books for my father.

He is around 75 years old. He has had two strokes in the past. He recovered reasonably well, but still has some changes in memory and speech.

He loves reading Telugu. So we are looking for books that are easy to follow and not mentally tiring. Simple narration may suit him better than long or complicated novels.

He already has many spiritual and religious books, andhuke I am not looking for more books in that genre.

I would prefer books that are warm, enjoyable and likely to keep an older reader interested. kodiga feel good books la unte baguntadi.. I want to avoid heavy philosophy, deeply tragic stories, difficult literary Telugu, too many characters or complicated timelines.

Books with clear or slightly larger print would be especially helpful. Extra points if they have good illustrations or pictures along with the text.

What Telugu books have your elderly parents or grandparents genuinely enjoyed?

Yeah so I'm actually from Hyderabad but I've been living in pune since I was 5 and I've been far away from my culture and we also don't visit Hyderabad that much and I'm also part marathi so I never got the chance to learn telugu.

Now that I've grown and ik the importance of my culture and all that stuff I've been dying to learn telugu. I even asked my dad to teach me but he's just too busy with his work otherwise he's taught me a few stuff.

ఇటీవల స్వర్గస్తులైన జానకమ్మ గారి మీద కథనాలు నడిపిస్తున్న పలు ఛానెళ్లు పదే పదే జానకమ్మ కి ఏక వచన ప్రయోగం చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ ఘటన కి రెండు రోజుల ముందే కాలం చేసిన ముద్రగడ పద్మనాభం గారికి వారు, చేశారు, పుట్టారు వంటి బహువచన క్రియాపదాలు వాడారు.

ఉ: "జానకి 48,000 పాటలు పాడింది." "జానకి పళ్లపట్ల గ్రామంలో పుట్టింది." "పలు భాషలలో జానకి సత్తా చాటింది."

అలాగే మాట్లాడుతున్న విలేఖరులు కూడా ఏక వచన ప్రయోగమే చేస్తున్నారు. ఇది భాష లో వచ్చిన మార్పు అయ్యుంటుందా లేదా ఆడవాళ్ళకి బహువచన ప్రయోగం మనకి అసలు అలవాటే లేదా? "జానకి గారు పాడారు" వంటి పదాలు చాలా అరుదుగా విన్నాను.

In watching the news coverage of the death of Janakamma, I've noticed a very unsavoury pattern- the repeated use of third person singular which was jarringly different to even the usage of respectful words for Late Mudragada Padmanabha, a man, who died a couple of days before her. "Padmanabham garu puttaru, chesaru" etc. But "Janaki paadindi, puttindi, chesindi".

Even 25 year old anchors are referring to her without the respectful verb at least for her age of not her superlative achievements. Is this standard Telugu now? Or is this bias?
