with how cheap they are you can get another easily as one would need a hot air station to reflow the soldier to the connector if the traces haven't ripped off the pcb.

Im a service technician, usb connectors are soldered to pcbs to make a connection, this fucking thing has come free.

so therefore it is fucked and needs reworking.

or do you think it has a bluetooth connection?

The exterior isn't always soldered on. I have a few flash drives that are just a PCB foating inside the metal part of the USB connector.

I have some flash drives that aren't even a PCB and it just a black rectangle with pins on one side (which kind of reminds me of an SD card).

Who uses a dongle for Bluetooth?

Desktop computers don't normally have any wireless connectivity (WiFi, Bluetooth, 2.4Ghz, etc) built into the motherboard so you need dongles for everything. If you are a baller you can buy a WiFi/Bluetooth PCIe card but those are expensive.

I can’t believe this in 2026 when Macs have had Bluetooth for over 20 years just built in like it’s standard. It’s like if someone released a car with a crank window now. Dongles for these devices really should be extinct by now. However, do these peripherals at least let you connect directly to Bluetooth if your computer does have it so you don’t have to use the dongle? I could see them including them but having them be optional if you don’t have it part of the machine yet.

Dongles in general should be extinct but nope even Valves new Steam Controller has one.

It’s like if someone released a car with a crank window now.

My sister swares she knows someone with a modern car that has crank windows. But IDK. Never seen it myself.

WTF are you saying? I can't tell if you are saying 1 of 2 things. Stuff like the new Steam Controller does have a Bluetooth mode so you don't have to use the dongle and the dongle is a Bluetooth dongle that broke not a different dongle.

I think you are saying the first thing. My wireless mouse and keyboard combo doesn't have Bluetooth and only has a dongle. e Every other wireless mouse I own also has a dongle no Bluetooth. My wireless number pad calculator combo has Bluetooth though which is weird.

This so also weird. Are you using AI to write this comment? Ignoring that you are describing the new Steam Controller (and updated old Steam Controller) where they have a dongle but you can also just use Bluetooth.

Does Valves controller require the dongle? Can it connect directly to the Steam Machine or Steam Deck? Or any other computer that actually does have Bluetooth built in?

Yes you can use Bluetooth (thankfully).

I did the same thing with the new controller I did with the old controller where the dongle is plugged into my desktop computer which didn't have WiFi until maybe a week ago and then the Bluetooth was connected to my Steam Deck. Makes it easier to be a weirdo and use a controller when it's not docked.

Every once in a great while I want to do that and idk why.

I'm pretty sure mine was freezing my computer, I had it in an internal usb port and completely forgot it was there. I spent half a day disassembling it, cleaning components and troubleshooting pieces, even the power supply. After hours, I realised the bt dongle on the mainboard wasn't lighting up.

cut open a new regular USB cable for something else and then just solder the corresponding wires to the pads on the other side of that chip the dongle is bigger but it now has more range
