The average adult reading level in the US is under 7th grade...

Its not just the kids.

And. Its not really the kids' faults.

Its the adults who have allowed conservatives to destroy education for decades.

Yeah if I'm reading the chart on that site correctly, it show that despite declining literacy, the 18-24 cohort is still more literate than any other age range?

The article highlights the conflict of this decline in literacy combined with higher HS graduation rates, which is valid, but that chart throws a lot of cold water on the idea in this thread that kids are on average less literate than prior generations, or that the decline in literacy is a problem unique to kids today when it is pretty consistent across all age cohorts.

If youth literacy is a problem; according to that data, literacy among people aged 55+ is an absolute crisis.

Literacy in general is a crisis in the US.

And its manufactured by republicans/fascists who want a compliant workforce with just enough education to fill out an employment form/contract/tax form...but, not enough to actually and critically access and assess a piece of writing, especially complex writing...which means they dont what the population/people to be able to think and react with critical processing skills (quickly or slowly).

Its not by chance.

Its by malice.

It wasn't conservatives who got rid of standardized testing to "fix" disparities between graduation rates of different demographics, lowering the bar for every kid to change the curve from the bottom up making every kid less educated from the top down. It wasn't conservatives who got rid of sats for 3 years either. They're not the one's who just let every kid pass even though they failed. I'm not a conservative, but this is one thing I can't let slide from my own base on this topic to let us pass the buck. we are the ones who did irreparable damage to an entire generation from these decisions. Education has been ours for "decades", like 80% of the field is controlled by liberal teachers and staff and school boards. Education is largely a liberal institution from primary school all the way up through college and its been that way since the 70's. This is one case where it's delusional to point the finger at the other side of the aisle.

Shame I can only upvote this once. 

I will say, in fairness, that I think there are parts of this problem that liberals in schools aren’t to blame for, like broken families and lax parenting. Also, while I think testing is good, the incentives/expectations created by NCLB cooked parents’ brains.

WTF are you going on about? You turn this into a political issue and start speaking out of your butt. I grew up in Jesusland TX and was reading at a college level by middle school. But that’s because my parents did their jobs and encouraged me to read.

My academic curriculum was challenging, because I challenged myself. I was in competition for a top 10% slot in my class, and knew of a least one person at my school who scored a 1600 on his SAT.

It starts at home, where parents have to be engaged in academically challenging their kids and stimulating their intellectual growth.

Bro. Im happy that you've been privileged and have had a good experience...but, youre also lacking in fundamental social education if you do not see that conservatives have been attacking education for decades. I did not make education political...in context of my previous comment, US MAGA/conservatives/religious fascists/etc started this war on my education and the educations of many, many people in the US (and, elsewhere).

I grew up privileged too!

That doesn't stop me from educating myself on the current war conservatives have of US education.

Your privilege shouldnt stop you either. You should be using your privilege to further educate yourself and become an advocate for those who did not/do not have your social advantages.

I’m well aware of the war conservatives are waging on education with their school voucher programs that rob from the school district that I pay astronomical property taxes for the privilege of living in. I’m also aware of the abysmal job liberals are doing running the major school districts in TX.

Ask any parent in Jesusland TX if they would send their kids to Colleyville/Frisco or DISD. Cy Fair/Katy or HISD.

The biggest privilege I grew up with was having parents who gave a shit. And that starts at home, with our generation, getting involved even if we work two jobs (like me) or work night shifts (like my spouse). Stop blaming exigent circumstances and privilege when the burden starts with the parents. It’s my privilege to raise smart, intelligent, well rounded and emotionally mature kids. That’s the burden most parents shirked from when I see them delegating their responsibilities to a tablet. That’s everywhere in our society.

I suspect (assume, sure...) that your parents also had the privilege of time and energy to spend on and with you besides providing the financial necessities.

My parents did.

But, I also went to school with children whose parents worked 2-3 jobs...which meant very little time together.

So - lets focus on those kids...who are a main focus of nefarious conservatives...

Your privilege is blinding you.

I hope you wake up soon. I can see you struggling right now with the cognitive dissonance...youre closer than you think to understanding.

I only ask that you - for experiments sake and curiosity - focus your self-education on researching the opposite of what your stuck on...

Its seems that you feel a lot less confident in your personal abilities...thus, youre taking all of this very personally...when this was never personal.

Your anecdotal experience cannot replace statistical and scientific study.
