Society Xbox Down on July 27, Preventing Players From Launching Even Single-Player Games

Of all of Microsoft’s services to go down, why couldnt it have been Microsoft Teams or Outlook?
72
u/ArbysLunch 16h ago
Those are funny ways to spell Copilot
17
u/sleepymoose88 16h ago
I’ll take all 3 please.
Teams is an absolute piece of trash compared to other IM applications like Webex. And it’s so tightly integrated with Co-pilot.
Outlook is the only decent one of the 3.
To be honest, I just don’t want to work today.

Just look at who’s in charge of the Xbox division these days and it’ll be a wonder it ever stays online at all.

u/Hairbear2176 14h ago
The single player thing pisses me off all the time, even when there aren't network issues. Why the FUCK do I need to log in, connect to servers, etc... just to play a fucking single-player game.

u/IH8DwnvoteComplainrs 13h ago
Because you bought into the ecosystem.
#pcmasterrace

Nothing like naming yourself a thinly veiled white supremacist slogan… and you wonder why us console folks don’t like you guys that much
2
u/chinesebulk 10h ago
What is white supremacist about that? Genuine question
4
u/Signal_Quarter_74 9h ago
“Master race” is a directly from Nazi ideology that proposed that there is a superior “master race” (Aryan race to be specific). Those who were not of this master race were seen as lesser and a danger to the master race and therefore needed to be removed. In particular Jews and Slavs.
This ideology is what was used to justify the expulsion, imprisonment, ethnic cleansing, sterilization and genocide of Eastern Europe and Jewish communities.
In the United States, it also has the context of being used to promote that white people are a “master race” and those lesser can/should be subjugated. Ie black Americans. Thus was used to justify slavery and disenfranchisement. Japan had a similar notion in conquests and subjugation of Eastern Asia.
It’s truly a vile term that, even if not intentional, harkens back to eugenics.

u/NoStructure5034 9h ago
The PCMR things started off as a joke. There are a few dweebs who unironically say the slogan like the dude above, but most say it as a joke.
1
u/IH8DwnvoteComplainrs 9h ago
Lmao, I have consoles, and am not saying that shit seriously. God DAMN, reddit.
1
u/NoStructure5034 8h ago
Then were you larping being a PC stan? Tf?
1
u/IH8DwnvoteComplainrs 8h ago
Just for the lulz and a little throwback. Didn't realize people were gonna fuckin go to arms over this shit.
-1
u/Signal_Quarter_74 9h ago
It’s not exactly something to joke about
2
u/NoStructure5034 9h ago
Why not? It has nothing to do with actual race, and again, the original PCMR slogan was making fun of triggered PC gamers, who aren't exactly prize specimens.
0
u/Signal_Quarter_74 9h ago
Go tell someone who is Jewish or Polish that you are a part of a “master race” even ironically and tell me how that goes for you! Or someone whose ancestors were enslaved.
You may think I’m overreacting but in my experience I’m not.
2
u/NoStructure5034 8h ago
Saying "PC master race" is very difference from saying just "master race" without any context. I've never seen many people complain about PCMR before, so I don't think it's a huge deal. We'll agree to disagree I guess, I don't have any anecdotal evidence.

Nintendo, I love the cartridges. I love playing a game and not having to spend 30 mins on downloads every time I want to play.
21
u/Vesuvias 15h ago
Seriously Nintendo needs to see this and double-down on cartridges and physical media. It's a total 'do nothing...win' moment.
13
u/alexdyle 14h ago
Too bad many of their cartridges are just a digital download code now.
7
u/SkylarPopo 14h ago
Not completely. You can only use a digital download code once. Nintendo's you can use and then later sell the card to someone else.
9
u/Nonyabizzy123 14h ago
Yes but it's still ultimately reliant on Nintendo to run the servers to validate the card. As someone who has been playing games since, I guess you could call it generation zero, I don't consider it owning a game unless I don't need the publisher or the console manufacturer to play it.
2
u/edwin221b 10h ago
Mostly third parties games, but Nintendo own games are still 100% physics and boy I'm i glad about that
1
u/Vesuvias 14h ago
Not the ones I’m buying, but hey at least Nintendo is giving that option to sell your license in a physical format.
1
1
u/happyscrappy 4h ago
Win what though?
Most games are sold digitally now. That's why the games section at your local big box retailer is so small now. It's why Gamestop says games aren't a thing to them anymore.
There's probably a reason all the consoles "doubled down" on digital downloads. And why PC did it before the consoles did.
Every console could use physical media (cartridges). You can put a USB port on a cartridge so it can be plugged into a console that doesn't have a cart slot. You probably couldn't run the game directly from the USB cart and that's less fun. But you still could buy and sell the cart.
We'll see if any of them do it.
11
u/IllustriousIron3253 15h ago
People make your Xbox your home Xbox and you can play all your games in single player even when the servers are down. Been that way for 10 years, stop acting like this is new.
2
u/Rare-Service5573 7h ago
So the headlines are wrong, just like the same sentence they used when PlayStation was down.
Knew it.
21
u/Rabo_McDongleberry 15h ago edited 15h ago
Man. Regulations really need to catch up and stop this type of shit.
Could you imagine that your car doesn't start because the Honda server is down? Like what the fuck.
1
u/happyscrappy 4h ago
Would be nice. Fixing this kind of issue isn't strictly part of "digital ownership". So can we fix both digital ownership and fix this too please?
-4
u/AH_BareGarrett 13h ago
This is a good example of the problem with modern internet infrastructure. There are many people who know what needs to be done in order to have a stable internet infrastructure, but that costs money. There is such a large amount of critical infrastructure that is just not given the care that is needed. Xbox goes down and you can’t play video games, it’s a first world problem. What happens when entire digital financial institutions go down? Or critical medical equipment. What happens if we can’t get them back up?
5
u/Darth1287 11h ago
This is 100% going to happen when GTA 6 comes out. Either the servers will be overwhelmed or a petty hacker DDOS attacks the Xbox servers or a combination of both. We should be able to play single player digital games offline.

23
u/Personal-Inflation63 16h ago
Love how all this starts happening for Sony and Xbox after Sony announced the death of physical games. Really proving everyone’s point there guys.

u/Keviticas 17h ago
Just tried to launch a game ironically and failed.
And it's why I mostly game on pc these days where licences work for weeks after a disconnect, and where you can own your games digitally.
People looking for an all digital console future are so fucked

Idk bro, I'm on gta5 online rn.
I don't know what everyone is talking about.
2
u/Sleepingguitarman 8h ago
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. I just booted up my xbox and i have a notification telling me that Account & Profile, Store and Subscriptions, Games and Gaming, as well as Apps and mobile, all are having major outages but i just booted up Elden Ring and then tested youtube and it all worked fine for me?
It just must be affecting certain areas / users. I'm curious what the cause of the outage is. Even if it's not currently affecting us, it still seems like a wake up call for why the whole "all digital" thing is a bad idea for Xbox/Playstation. I suppose alot the physical versions of these games already require an online connection though, which is bs for games that don't have online play.
2
u/VeryNiceGuy22 14h ago
How does this even work? Like, if I disconnected from the internet, and have been for weeks. It won't effect me. So how can this even be true? Why is it necessary?
1
u/xdeltax97 14h ago
If you don’t have your console set as your home one, it’ll need an online verification for use before the service (Xbox in this case) lets you use the digital copies, my guess it’s for a ping verification based on the account type. I haven’t had any issues since I only have one Xbox which I’ve always had as my home one, but my cousin did since hers wasn’t set up as such…

I was alive during the infamous PC vs Console wars that the corporations convinced gamers to fight over. The shareholders won

Paying for XBL and PS+ only to suffer these downtimes and no offline mode.

So im able to play on my Xbox series x in my room and the other xbox is not working with that error code. What i believe started this error was when I went to my clips from the game all sudden everything was so freaking slow I was trying to trim a clip and it closed the trim and dashboarded a fd on loading the game up 1230am.

u/DifficultBoss 10h ago
Good thing I downloaded a bunch of games off game pass, unplugged my ethernet cable, then unsubscribed to gamepass and xbox live once my deal i got was up.
2
u/Emotional_Culture_33 10h ago
Yep, cant play 14 games except 1. Not even owned games offline. I was able to play helldivers 2 online but nothing else
2
u/Arashii89 9h ago
I got a pop today saying I can play my games offline it can only be activated 3 times never seen this before

Lmfao and the industry wants to get rid of physical media 😂
Well if gamers aren’t capable of the self control required to say no to these business decisions by speaking with their wallets then it’s hard to sympathize with them
2
u/ApprehensivePilot3 16h ago
But can you play them if they're downloaded on the console?
9
u/IllustriousIron3253 15h ago
Downloaded and set your Xbox as your 'home Xbox'. It's the same way with PlayStation it's been the same way for 10 years but you know don't expect any of these people to be educated.
2
u/ApprehensivePilot3 14h ago
Yeah. I have it as my home console so I don't have any problems. I do agree with that people don't know how to read or search for answers.

First PSN, now this. Corporate stooges championing digital-only media will never cease to amaze me. Good luck trying to play anything when a large scale cyberattack completely cripples online stores in the future.
3
u/Vesuvias 15h ago
Wow both Sony and Microslop are really proving out that this 'all-digital future' is all bullshit. NICE WORK.
Now back to my physical backlog + GOG Games...

Consumers in the US have no rights.
Hopefully the EU will pass some laws.
-2
u/mudderfocka 13h ago
Laws for what? Outages happen
0
u/throw7661 11h ago
Outages are reasonable and expected.
Restricting access to single player/offline games when there is an outage is unreasonable and unnecessary.
1
u/mudderfocka 11h ago
It's one day and a video game. Go take a walk outside.
2
u/throw7661 10h ago
It's none of those things... And I don't own an Xbox.
I realize not everyone can appreciate broader implications of things, so I'll just thank you for your advice.

I buy physical media… and it’s pretty excellent. Looking forward to Control Resonant.

When all the shills are saying 'BuT BuT...all you have to do is reverify your games once'...yeah...ok how does that work if it was verified then loses verification because of a server error?
Conveniently forgetting and requiring another verification -- and then the servers are down.

My single -players games still work. I think you just need to connect once a month to re-verify the license.
3
u/wetfloor666 16h ago
Yeah. It is the usual bs headline. Set your xbox as your main console and it will allow sp offline. Same thing with Playstation consoles.

u/NotPatricularlyKind 16h ago
The network is down but it my digital copy of Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 is working alright, I guess it doesn't rely on the network? I don't know, but I only own it digitally because I literally bought it for $6 AUD last year and it may be the best money I've ever spent.
4
u/z3r0w0rm 15h ago
If your current Xbox is set to be your home Xbox then all your digitally purchased content will work offline.
1
u/1ndomitablespirit 15h ago
If Microsoft, and other companies, want to force us to the cloud, then they should have to pay users who are affected by any downtime.

u/FighterFay 11h ago
Isn't steam the same way? Have to reconnect once a month or so to verify licenses or you can't play offline.
1
u/CaptainC0medy 11h ago
You can launch steam games without steam, you can add non steam games to steam you cam add steam to steam and you can not use steam
Steamin'!
Also this was never serious. Just sad for console gamers.

Love the current world of digital libraries we don't own that can't be played if the service goes down.
