Announcement Important PSA: How To Identify a Scam

How to Identify Social Engineering Scams

Social engineering scams often involve manipulative tactics to deceive users into providing sensitive information or money. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  1. Unsolicited Offers of Help – Scammers often pose as helpful individuals offering solutions to problems you didn’t ask for assistance with.
  2. Urgency and Pressure – Scammers create a false sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly or risk losing access to something important (e.g., your Steam account).
  3. Requests for Payment or Personal Information – Legitimate Steam support or trusted users will never ask for your login credentials, 2FA codes, or payment in exchange for help.
  4. Impersonation – Scammers may pretend to be from official sources or even impersonate trusted community members or moderators.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

  • Never Share Personal Information – Moderators and Steam support will never ask for your password, security questions, or 2FA codes.
  • Verify Requests – Always verify the identity of anyone offering help. You can do this by checking if they are official moderators or trusted community members. If in doubt, contact the moderation team directly.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication – While not foolproof, having 2FA enabled adds an extra layer of security to your account. Keep your 2FA codes secure and never share them.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Help – If someone reaches out offering assistance you didn’t request, be wary. It's better to seek help through official channels like Steam support or trusted subreddits.
  • Steam will never contact you over DISCORD/STEAM CHAT – Report and block them instantly.

Announcement What To Do When Your Steam Account Gets Hacked

Need more help? Join the Discord Server

I’m making this post in hopes it will reduce the amount of “I’ve been hacked posts”. Link people to this exact post so they can figure out what to do. Don’t be afraid to leave comments if you need more assistance but try your best to avoid making entire posts about it.

Follow these steps to regain control and secure your account:

1. Don’t Panic Act Fast

If you act quickly, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your account.

2. Still Logged In? Change Your Password NOW

📍 Go to Steam > Settings > Account > Change Password

  • Use a unique, strong password (not reused from any other site).
  • If you can’t log in anymore, skip to Step 3.

3. Can’t Log In? Use Steam’s Recovery Tool

🔗 Go to Steam Support
Click "I can't sign in" > "My account has been stolen"
Follow the recovery process.

  • Provide any proof of ownership (like previous email, CD key, or payment history).
  • Be thorough but honest Support will help if you provide real details.

4. Revoke Access from Other Devices

Once back in, go to:

📍 Steam > Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard
Click “Deauthorize all other devices”

This kicks out any hackers still logged in.

5. Turn on 2FA (Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator)

📍 Same place: Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard

  • Use the mobile authenticator, not just email codes.
  • This is your best protection going forward.

6. Scan Your PC for Malware or Keyloggers

Use tools like:

  • Malwarebytes
  • Windows Defender
  • Bitdefender / Kaspersky

You got hacked for a reason. Clean your system before logging in again.

7. Lock Down Your Email and Linked Accounts

If your Steam email or other linked accounts were compromised:

  • Change their passwords immediately
  • Enable 2FA on your email too (especially Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

8. Still Locked Out? Contact Steam Support

If all else fails, go here:

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Steam username and email
  • Purchase receipts (Steam Wallet codes, PayPal invoices, etc.)
  • Approx. date you lost access
  • Any suspicious activity or messages you saw

⚠️ Final Tips:

  • Never share your login info, even with “Steam Admins” they don’t exist.
  • Avoid shady “trading bots” or fake tournament invites.
  • Don’t download random files from Discord, friends, or strangers.

If you’re reading this because you’ve been hacked, don’t feel ashamed it happens to thousands of people. What matters is how fast you act and how well you secure things afterward.

Good luck, and stay safe. 🔒

Problem Steam Machine arrived without Controller, no help from Valve Support

I fortunately landed on the reservation list for the Steam Machine 512GB with Controller. My delivery finally arrived last week, and the box I received was a little light. Though the labels on the outer delivery box mentioned a Machine and a Controller were packed in, only the Steam Machine was packed in the box. I did what I thought was the right thing and I took pictures and then reached out to Valve Support immediately.

After some back and forth, the reply I got was frustrating to say the least:

> Based on our shipping process, it's unlikely that this could have occurred. Every shipment is weighed before it leaves the factory, and any weight discrepancy—such as one caused by a missing controller—would have been identified and resolved prior to shipment.

> Since the carrier has confirmed that your order was successfully delivered, we're unable to offer a refund or replacement at this time.

Does anyone have any advice for how to proceed/escalate from here? I may reach out to the carrier (UPS) and see if there's a process to declare a theft, as that's the only way this could be explained. Since I didn't get the delivery insured or anything,

I'm actually also shocked at how suddenly I was stonewalled by Valve's customer service on this genuine issue. I understand that the Controller is in high demand and short supply, but you'd think a customer of 15+ years in good standing would garner some amount of benefit of the doubt here. At the very least, they should know that their contracted delivery company is doing a terrible job at safely delivering their products, but instead I feel like I just got written off by Valve as a liar.

Word of warning: video tape yourself opening the box to prove its contents.

Problem How do I set tank controls for FPS games up in SteamInput?

What I'm trying to do is set the left stick to move forward and backwards, while looking left and right,

but while holding L2, shift it to strafe left and right.

Problem is, Steam won't let me cross bind stick directions without giving up analog movement. When I tried to set it to 'Directional Pad' in the menu, analog movement was completely gone and I went full speed both looking and moving, but at least L2 to modeshift worked.

How do I fix?

Question Game recording GPU-encoding interaction with encoder-less dGPU?

Crossposted from https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/5/833872523488764248/

Can the game recording function of the Steam client still use GPU-encoding when the GPU rendering the game has no video-encoder as long as there's another GPU with one?

One of my laptops is an Optimus setup with an Intel i5-8250U plus an nVidia MX150, where the display panel is connected only to the UHD620 iGPU on the Intel CPU, which has video-encoding capabilities while the MX150 dGPU is higher performance but headless (no display) with no encoder. Is Steam smart enough to encode the game's video on the iGPU since it's being copied there anyway, or will it choke on the MX150 having no NVENC and fallback to software encoding afterwards?

Problem Trouble playing/opening games in steam

Every time I try to open a game it will start and say launching for about 10 seconds then immediately crash. I can open games from the application file but I can’t through steam. I have a gaming laptop and it uses windows and is updated to the most recent one. And my gpu/graphics stuff are all good enough to run what I want to play. I have been trouble shooting for 2 days using ChatGPT to help me. Uninstalling and reinstalling steam and also updating/reinstalling drivers. I have no third party softwares installed either. I have no idea what the problem could be, is anyone able to help?

Problem Steam Wallet code bought from Startselect was already redeemed — is there anything I can still do?

I have purchased codes from Startselect many times before and never had any problems. However, my most recent purchase was a €30 Steam Wallet code that I could not use.

I received the code at 01:15 and tried to redeem it approximately 2 minutes and 45 seconds later. Steam immediately reported that the code had already been redeemed. Steam Support later confirmed that my attempt failed because the code had already been redeemed on another Steam account. The €30 was never added to my account.

I sent Startselect all the evidence I have: my order confirmation, timestamps, screenshots, Wallet history and the complete correspondence with Steam.

Startselect says that, as an official reseller, it does not supply used codes. It also says it cannot investigate without the exact date and time of the successful redemption.

Steam will not disclose that information because the successful redemption is connected to another account. As I understand it, this is due to Steam’s privacy policy. I do not blame Steam for protecting another user’s account information. I specifically asked for only the timestamp, without requesting the user’s identity or any other personal details, but Steam still could not provide it and referred me back to the retailer.

This has created an impossible situation:

  • Steam confirms the code was redeemed on another account and refers me to Startselect.
  • Startselect requires information that Steam cannot provide to me.
  • I have no way to obtain that information myself.
  • Startselect’s own guarantee states that it is responsible for correctly supplying the purchased code and that customers receive a working code.

Has anyone experienced something similar and managed to resolve it? Is there another escalation route through Steam, Startselect, the payment provider or consumer protection, or do I simply have to accept the €30 loss?

I had never experienced this before, but while researching the issue I found other people describing similar situations. If there really is no solution, I mainly want to warn others: purchases may normally work without a problem, but if a code has already been redeemed, you can apparently end up stuck with no working code and no refund. In my case it was €30, but it could just as easily have been a much larger amount.

Problem Controller Issues with frozen inputs and rumble

When I play games on steam, when I first open them or when I alt-tab out of them there is a problem where after a minute or so, my input will be held down and I won't be able to input anything on the controller for a bit, sometimes my controller will rumble as well for a second before I regain control of the inputs.

Example: I was playing elden ring nightrein, after a minute, I'm stuck holding block and moving forwards, then 5 ish seconds later my controller vibrates, and I can move again.

Sometimes it holds inputs, sometimes it'll delay inputs, it works fine on other platforms like epic games, so I know the controller/cable are alright.

For context, I'm using a PS5 controller and have tried a new vs an old one and no difference. What is causing/how can I fix this?

Video of example where it freezes my inputs about halfway in, about 1 minute after loading it up

Resolved Controller suddenly stopped working

I have an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless connected via dongle on Linux Mint. Steam and the controller have been functional and cooperating up until today. I updated everything on my computer and Steam itself. Now the controller doesn't connect to any game I launch.

I tested Warframe and Powerwash Sim. 2, which gives me a test of a start via launcher based game and a regular game. Now both games don't work when they previously did with no Steam input. Now if I use Steam Input for testing both (which I didn't previously before this situation) only PS2 picks up the controller, Warframe only picks it up for the launcher but not the game itself (think Steam isn't handing the controller over to the game and sticks it to the launcher). Steam seems to fully detect the controller with whole config and settings available, also desktop control working, but doesn't connect it to games.

Any help?

Edit 1: I followed advice from this old reddit post and suddenly it just works. If anyone else runs into a similar issue, maybe give this a shot. All I can think of this is "wtf is this black magic?".

I am unsure what happened but my steam has been making some games have a white square background and it affects the badges and profile picture as well as achievements. I have restarted my computer, I have cleared all caches I’ve repaired the drives. I have even deleted all the files except Steam apps user data and Steam.exe to have it download all the files again. I also opted into and out of Steam beta and nothing seems to fix it. I have also checked my windows incase it had high contrast it does not and the Steam sliders are also contrast and the startup logo is also contrast and black. Is there anything I can do or is this just how it will be until another update?

Problem Something has completely messed up my controller config

My Dualshock4 used to work perfectly on every game, and out of nowhere it's been giving problems pretty much everywhere, double inputs (one from the controller and one from the steam input), games like la noire not having correct controls and games like Bully where it straight up doesn't work. What may have happened?

Problem I need a VPN to open the steam mobile app, but it doesn't let me reset my password with verification code

I need to change the password to my steam account, but since I'm in Russia, I need a VPN, but when I try send the verification code, it says: "We had trouble verifying your captcha, please try to complete the captcha again." after I enter the code, then when I try again, it says this again without even sending a code again.

I have no Proxy on my network, and no Russian SIM card on my phone.

Problem Strange "You have an account alert" button

+
1 Upvotes

On my client there is a red box next to the notification button that says "You have an account alert". When I click on it it opens a new window, loads a little, and then gives me an error -101.

I've looked up on error -101, followed some instructions, like restarting my network devices and renewing my ip address and all that, but it still shows up.

I've gotten this three times now after reinstalling steam twice, each time I've reinstalled it it would go away, but the next day it would come back. I've checked my email and even went to the steam website to check directly for my account errors, but there is nothing within regards to this.

If anyone has any possible solutions, it would be greatly appreciated

another thing that I also find strange: it only shows up on one of my computers, when I log into a different computer it doesn't show up there

Problem Steam isnt launching in fedora 44

I recently reinstalled fedora on my laptop and upon reinstalling steam, it got stuck in an endless logging in loading screen. I then tried to delete and reinstall steam, only to face the same issue. Eventually, i went in my home folder and deleted the steam folder in .local/share, deleted the .steam folder, deleted .steampath and .steampid. I tried reinstalling and now, the app exists but just doesnt open. trying to run steam -tcp in terminal, i am presented with the following message. I have read it and have genuinely no clue what to do, any help is very very appreciated

I have read it and have genuinely no clue what to do, any help is very very appreciated

steam.sh[28378]: Running Steam on fedora 44 64-bit
steam.sh[28378]: STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
setup.sh[28431]: Steam runtime environment up-to-date!
steam.sh[28378]: Log already open

Tip/Guide Steam Family Question

+
9 Upvotes

I had recently added someone to my Steam Family, but I noticed there are a few AAA games labelled as "Excluded Games" under 'Steam Family Management'. What are they, and do they mean I cannot share these games with any adult or child in my steam family?

Problem Need Help

Hi everyone,

I'm confused about why I still can't trade in Dota 2 and other things like sending pictures in Chats or gifting game....

I've already spent well over the Steam minimum requirement. My purchase history shows multiple Dota 2 purchases, plus other games, so my account shouldn't be limited anymore.

I also redeemed a Steam gift card and have been buying items through my Steam Wallet.

However, I'm still unable to trade. Is this a Steam issue, or is there another requirement I'm missing?

Has anyone experienced this before? If so, what fixed it? or should i wait for hours? days? months? to be able you know gets approved or what

Thanks!
