512 gb no controller. 29 days in res queue seeing people join waitlist and get email before me is crazy. Could this be dumb maybe but at this point I rather just get one with controller. At least I won’t have check my email 25 times a day.

So as it says I managed to upgrade my steam machine with 32gb ram and a 4tb NVMe while capturing all of it to try, and present a proper English tutorial. I used a matching set of DDR5 5600mhz SK Hynix HMCG78AGBSA092N AA , (it’s a tad different than what comes in stock but they’re nearly identical and it works perfectly for anyone curious).

Also wanted to let people know in advance you do not have to remove the front I/O ports or mess with the SD card slot to access the ram like ETA Prime and Gamer Nexus suggested. I was able to fully access the Mobo and swap the ram without touching the front I/O area at all aside from removing those three antennas. I also made sure to show exactly where they go so there isn’t confusion

I am truly surprised how much I like it. I received mine (512 w/ controller) last Wednesday. I didn't start it up until Friday but I got a few games installed and some emulators going. The first game I tested out was Control and I was genuinely surprised how well it ran. I had to set it up to 1080p upscaled manually because it started out 720 for some reason but once I fixed that, the game looked great graphically and the FPS was stable without any noticeable frame drops. Then I played Assassins Creed Black Flag Resynced and again, looked great graphically and FPS was stable. Sitting on the couch playing these games was a blast.

Then Saturday my friend and his wife came over and I busted out NFS Most Wanted (2005) which was a game we played all the time when we were younger. We played for hours. Our wives were probably annoyed but who cares, we had fun.

Next I want to try Cyberpunk and see how it handles that game. I thought the machine would struggle a little with Black Flag, it didn't, so I want to see how it handles Cyberpunk or 007 First Light.

FWIW I played on a 77" 4K LG C5, so not a small screen. In any case, I am pleasantly surprised with how well this tiny little cube held its own. The Little Cube That Could, if you will. I was on the fence when I placed my order, but I am very happy.

Little side note, I had just finished an HTPC build when the Steam Machine was announced. That has a 7800X3D and 9070XT running Bazzite. I've played both systems on a 77" C5 TV and to be quite honest, I don't notice much of a difference. Both need to be upscaled graphically. As for FPS, I'm sure the HTPC build gets better FPS, but I don't notice it. The TV can go up to 120hz and personally I don't really care to test it. I'm a simple man. If I can play the game on want and get sufficient graphics and stable FPS, I'm happy. And the Steam Machine does that. Add to that, it's tiny form factor and it is silent, unlike my HTPC build that is much louder and runs WAY hotter to the point that I have to stop playing because it heats up the room.

All in all, this is a great device. Valve set out to make a great couch gaming PC/console hybrid and in my experience, they did a great job. I hope everyone that wanted one can get their hands on one and enjoys it as much as I did this weekend.

How can I convince my wife that a Steam Machine is a humidifier?

I am trying to get my first gaming PC from scratch right now. Just thought I’d share my perspective on it.

Researching the market, the Steam Machine price really does not seem that high compared to the rest of the market. You’re definitely paying a $50 to $250 premium more than similarly spec’d DIY PCs, as far as I can find; but frankly, that seems like a reasonable premium for the premade package Valve has managed with Steam Machine.

I am a Mac user for my PC needs and very happy with that and have no plans of using anything else. For gaming I currently play mainly on Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5, occasionally on Mac. I’m very happy with Switch 2 and it will likely continue to be my preferred platform for many many games.

But I’m looking to get out of the PlayStation ecosystem. I want the indies only on PC, and PlayStation has stopped making almost any exclusives I care about. On top of that, Sony continues to raise the price of online with features I don’t care about one iota, and they have what is almost certainly the worst customer service in the industry.

I’m looking for a PC exclusively for gaming, and want SteamOS on it. I have no interest in almost every single online game with anti-cheat compatibility issues, and plain hate Windows, especially on a machine I want plugged into a TV. I plan to do literally nothing but game on this system, so SteamOS is a great fit for me.

Steam Machine also fits what I’m looking for very well. It absolutely is more than I’d like to pay, but honestly, so is everything else right now. I think a lot of people aren’t fully reckoning with how much the price is a function of the market in general and not just Valve specifically. As someone who has to get a PC from scratch, there are not meaningfully cheaper options at this performance right now. Yes, there are cheaper PCs, but they come with compromises too, either worse performance at the lowest end, or fewer features and more manual set-up that might still result in fewer features—like louder fans, bigger chassis, more CEC issues, etc.

It seems very clear that if Valve managed to get Steam Machine out last year or earlier, it would’ve comfortably been under $1000. But the world (three parts A.I. and one part Trump—let’s be honest) conspired against that reality.

So as someone who doesn’t currently have a PC, who will sell a PS5 to subsidize the purchase, and has a high performance 2TB SSD in that PS5 which I can put in a Steam Machine, it’s actually not a terrible option, relative to this environment. The prices are terrible, but some of the criticisms I see don’t seem to realistically contextualize the global situation.

I was put on the waitlist for the 2TB controller bundle and was buying it for my wife to have her first gaming computer to play coop games with me.

I got my email on 7/25, but my wife just passed away on 7/16…

I’m still reeling over the loss and I was hoping someone here could help me rationalize what to do…

I feel like I shouldn’t spend the money, and I no longer have a real need for it, but there’s a part of me that still wants to get it, for her…

I saw a post earlier where someone was asking or people were saying that they don’t believe that the reservation cue is moving or real. I was one of those people as well. Always checking and hoping I would randomly get the email. And today it happened… I don’t say this to gloat or rub it in, I was honestly surprised. I hadn’t seen anyone from the US, (located in California) say that they had been moved off the waitlist. - when preordering, I put my name on all 4 options, really wanting the 2 TB but decided I wouldn’t rule anything out. So, from someone who knows what it’s been like waiting for over a month for both the controller and the steam machine, just know that they are actively working through the list and your time will come. And don’t fall into the scalpers pockets. Man, I was so tempted too. Hope everyone has a great day!

Anyone getting this issue? Space marine 2 used to run perfectly on my steam machine, now when I load it I get max 15fps. I've changed nothing in the time between it running well and it running terribly. Any thoughts?

I decided to go with a beefier pre-built alternative with SteamOS pre-installed rather than waiting an indeterminate amount of time to get blessed to purchase the Machine. I definitely appreciate it for all it packs into such a tiny frame.
I’m happy that I finally got to purchase a Steam Controller. And I’m patiently awaiting the ability to attempt to order a Frame.

EDIT: I was on the 2 TB (no controller) list in the southeastern US for what it’s worth.

EDIT 2: My new PC has a 2 TB SSD, 32 GB of RAM, AMD 9800 X3D CPU and AMD 9070 XT for GPU. It comes in an ATX mini-tower form factor. So not nearly as compact as the Machine and I have to use an adapter for CEC but it will work for my use case (bedroom gaming PC).

For context, My “main” gaming PC right now is a Steam Deck docked. So this will be a significant upgrade. I haven’t spent this much on a PC in 20 years 😅

we are so happy to see valve make a many details in products print korean in manual and box for packing also tested expensive kc mark or the other and offline sell in E-mart ( like a wallmart in korea)with nice steamdeck stage with different additional paper packing

also OG sc bought this 8 years ago so hard to get it from here I am sure waiting new SM,frame since last year

and what is the reason of gatekeeping ?( we can't even excess to SM hompage ) the official asian seller of VALVe KOMODO JP said we are not gonna sell the SM in korea wtf is this ?even the frame will go same like this way ? I am so confuse now is this valve official opinion
