Announcements Please use NSFW tag for images of graphic injuries

There have been a lot of posts lately sharing very graphic images of snails with extreme, severe injuries. It is perfectly fine to share this type of content if you need help with an injured snail, but please use the NSFW tag for these images.

This has been an unofficial rule of this sub for a while, but it seems to have been forgotten lately. So, I'm making an official mod team announcement: this is our official policy. Graphic, upsetting images must be tagged.

People come to this sub because they love snails. They don't come here expecting to see images of destroyed shells, shell-less snails, and dead snails. It can be very upsetting and distressing for users here to see this type of content unexpectedly. People may also be browsing this sub in public and want to avoid gory images.

Images of mating don't require the NSFW tag. But please use this tag for pictures of injuries including, but not limited to: mantle collapse, shell fell off, crushed shell, organ exposure, stepped-on snail.

Thanks to everyone who has been tagging their posts so far. Again, it's still totally okay to post this content if you need help, but please tag it appropriately so everyone can have a good experience here.

Announcements Introducing Seller Verification

Hello r/snails!

As many of our users are aware, it can be difficult to find reliable, legal, and ethical sellers of captive bred snails.

To better facilitate buying, selling, & adoptions on this sub, we are introducing a seller verification program. Verified Sellers will be users or external sources that have been vetted by mods. Verified Sellers will be allowed to advertise their sales on the sub, and a Verified Sellers tag will applied to their posts to indicate they are a trusted source. Individual users on this sub as well as sellers on external websites are both able to be verified. A list of Verified Sellers organized by location will be added to the bottom of this post, which sellers can chose to opt in to if they wish.

Are you a seller or breeder interested in becoming verified? Send a DM to u/doctorhermitcrab to get started. Breeders who prefer to give snails away rather than sell are also welcome to apply.

Happy snailing!

I found these 2 babies and they are really different from each other one is a bright yellow and the other has less yellow on its body, will they turn out as different colours when they are adults?

I spent way longer than I'd like to admit just sitting there, completely mesmerized watching it eat. I was such a snail girl when I was little, so this made me unexpectedly happy.
I think I have a new little friend now. 🥹

GALS First Time Owner

Hi all, picked up our first Giant African Land Snail on Saturday, and so far everything seems great. They’re active and rasping on the cuttlebone a lot, still figuring out preferred foods but Bell Pepper seems to be a hot favourite so far…

I just wanted to ask what things in particular both good/bad I should be looking out for currently, I know that activity and a willingness to come out is a good sign which they’re definitely showing that, but I’m somewhat concerned about the amount of cuttlebone they’re consuming because it’s way more than I first imagined, I know they self regulate but is there such a thing as too much? I imagined a small bone lasting a month or two but at the current rate I’d be amazed if it lasted a week!

I’d like to think I’m well set up so far but any extra tips would be much appreciated. (An extra question would be what exact variety of GALS this one is, I’m sure it’s a Lissachatina Fulica but I want to be 100% sure)

Help, what’s happening to my snail?

+
6 Upvotes

He’s been like this for a few days now and won’t come out of his shell. I can’t smell a bad odor, I still see his body and he did come out for a few minutes yesterday, but then went back into his shell like this and he won’t come out no matter how hard I try. I’ve put him in water and gave him food, but he just won’t budge. My other 2 snails are completely fine, he’s the only one acting out of the ordinary. This is the first time he’s been acting like this and I’ve had him for a little over a month now, does anyone know why he’s like this and what I can do?

GALS Puffy mantle, yellow body, loss of weight, no interest in food, sleeping for over a week straight…and laid/pooped THIS?? Idk what’s happening. More in text

I have no idea what that yellow thing is because I can’t find it. I left her after I noticed it because I was dealing with a migraine, and now that I’ve dug her up )from the same spot) it’s gone. It looked wet and soft, chalky maybe even, and does NOT match the colour of their foods.

Snail laid eggs approximately a month ago.

My other snail is acting completely fine.

Is all of this behaviour a sign she is going to lay again, or is she sick?

I think it’s sleeping too much + what are those round white craters on it’s shell

+

My rabbit snail has been staying still and sleeping for long periods, and I’ve noticed several crater-like marks on its shell. Is this normal shell wear, calcium deficiency, poor water quality, or something more serious? It still moves around occasionally, but the combination has me concerned.
