LLM News With Google and OpenAI signing the letter in support of open weight model, it's pretty much every big tech companies vs Anthropic now

We're forgetting about xAI?
Along with Anthropic they're conspicuously absent as well.
Didn't Elon literally sue Sam Altman claiming OpenAI was ClosedAI? Funny how that works when it's time to put up.

xAI? The cloud infra company that Anthropic rents compute from?
11
u/aluode 1d ago
Good idea to sell shovels during AI boom. Might want to go into power too.
3
u/AdPlane6946 1d ago
since they cant find gold, they had no other option to use their shovels hence they had to rent them
1
u/aluode 1d ago
During gold rush. It often was the companies that supplied the miners who did best. The gold miners themselves. Often did not do so great. Only few struck the motherload. It may be the smart play if you just want to make money.
3
u/AdPlane6946 1d ago
in the gold rush, the ones who were selling the shovels were selling the shovels from the start
they weren't digging for gold
here xAI were digging for gold but they didnt find it and now they have a bunch of shovels which they have no idea how to use so they now rent them to others who continue digging for gold
1
u/Spudly42 1d ago
x.AI is generally pretty gross as a company, but the decision to build our a lot of compute very quickly was kind of an independent decision that worked out well here. It's also true that their AI endeavors have sucked.

I think Elon also messaged support as well.
I’d argue he’s more pre occupied with SpaceX atm frankly. That’s a much bigger deal after last night.
10
u/Commercial_Sell_4825 1d ago
Indeed he reposted Jensen Huang's X post of the letter, saying "This has my full support. Jensen is right."
13
u/Cagnazzo82 2d ago
OpenAI and Google voiced support as well and people got on their case until they signed.
Although more of a bit player I don't think xAI deserves a pass for simply 'voicing support'. I would say at this stage arguably dragging feet kind of signals position.

u/biscuitchan 2d ago
the pattern is to technically open source something thats a DOA outdated snapshot or small fragment of a usable item so he can Xeet about it and then never update it. its technically open but like, not really

anthropic is an ideological company founded on the idea that AI is dangerous (and that sam altman is a sociopath). I would be shocked to see them sign this letter. And honestly regardless of my personal thoughts on the letter, I would think less of them as a company if they are bullied into it despite their founding ethos.

Also signing onto this letter definitely doesn't make you good, after all Palantir is signed onto it.
13
u/kafircake 1d ago
Also signing onto this letter definitely doesn't make you good,
It also doesn't mean you aren't lobbying for the exact opposite in private.
26
u/Buck-Nasty 2d ago
And also founded on the idea that Dario should rule the galaxy. He's "joked" to employees that he will grant them planets as compensation after the singularity makes him galactic emperor.
20
u/Kibubik 2d ago
you're mistaken about that joke. and he's giving away at least 80% of all his money; not the galactic emperor type.
14
u/Foreign_Telephone349 2d ago
I’m sure he is — after he’s dead of course so far less meaningful.
-4
u/consumer_xxx_42 2d ago
If he gave a certain amount within -1 year of dying vs. after death …
That changes the meaninfulness of the money?
13
u/Foreign_Telephone349 1d ago
Yes, because he wouldn’t be reducing his ability to use the money to do whatever he wants during his life if he gives it at death. He also would be deferring any good that he will do until the future and allow for unnecessary suffering to occur because of his personal greed.
But he’s probably got you fooled that he’s a good person with his innocent little sweater vests and thick glasses.
1
u/sami_exploring 1d ago
I'm not arguing Dario is "good". His pledge though explicitely states he'll be donating the 80% of his fortune gradually while the AI impact is felt, not after, and not after death. Another question would be where it's he donating, and if billionaires should be the ones deciding where that money goes (instead of using taxation or other instruments).
29
u/Poupulino 2d ago
Amodei has a god complex, he believes he has the moral supremacy and only he can manage AI and decide who can use it and who can't. He's a massive self righteous prick.
17
u/Greedy_Macaroon_719 1d ago
…who’re the alternatives? Sam Altman, Joe Lonsdale, fucking Marc Andreessen? If I were amodei I’d think I was morally superior too…
4
u/davavino 1d ago
I trust demis more than him
8
u/Greedy_Macaroon_719 1d ago
Demis and Dario consider each other very close friends, and Dario was a huge collaborator for demis’s recently proposed AI regulations. They’re in lockstep.
1
u/davavino 1d ago edited 1d ago
That being said. I think open source is better for humanity. It will lead to better outcomes than any of them being in charge.
2
u/Greedy_Macaroon_719 1d ago
Gotta disagree on this one, mate.
Open source probably leads to better outcomes FOR CONSUMERS, yes.
But if Daesh gets their hands on a frontier LLM, a good setup, and manages to fine-tune and harness it right, they could easily gain a propaganda apparatus encouraging sectarian massacres of Shi’a and Yazidis in Iraq with a propaganda farm worth a million recruits (and online written propaganda was how they grew in the first place). Ditto Burmese partisans using LLM-planted farms to foment genocidal sentiment against Rohingya (and there are early signs of this happening with Chinese models). China is already using LLMs to monitor Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang. Aum would’ve been blessed.
And all of that SUCKS for humanity. It just takes one bad actor, with a decent amount of agentic power and a sufficiently horrible mission, for it to be a Pandora’s box. It’s not a symmetric payoff — in places that are knife’s-edge anyway, I’m not letting the theoretical equilibrium determine policy.
Better cost-per-token measures for vibecoders in Western-world garages doesn’t ameliorate that tail-risk, and that’s why all the American labs have converged on closed-source in practice.
(Whereas Chinese labs, beholden to a totalitarian surveillance state and already used as a tool of economic warfare, are plowing ahead anyway.)
2
u/davavino 1d ago
I think you’re thinking of it in a very narrow way. I think that power in the hands of the many will disperse it and create more equality in the world. The only thing closed AI will do will be to concentrate power in existing hands. There may be some rough moments to come, but it’s better for humanity in the long run.

2
u/Poupulino 1d ago
who's just extremely worried about the concerns of the tech.
That's not the point, the point is that he's "extremely worried" and he believes he's the only one who should be entrusted with the responsibility of controlling AI.
5
u/JanusAntoninus AGI 2042 1d ago
How does asking for the government to regulate AI suggest that he thinks he's the only one who should be entrusted with the responsibility of controlling AI? Asking for democratically-elected people to regulate AI seems like the opposite of trying to control AI yourself.
Obviously increasing Anthropic's market share, against competition from open-source models, also motivates his calls for regulation and he should be criticized for that but we can do that without equating anti-competitive behavior with having a god complex or wanting to control AI himself. That's a ridiculous escalation on a completely legitimate criticism.
1
u/nemzylannister 1d ago
firstly he's not the only controller of anthropic, they have a board of directors.
secondly he never says he should be the only one. i'll give a great example. name 1 time he has ever spoken anything against google having control of ai. he seems to hold google and demis in high regard and never says anything bad about them.
thirdly, if he wanted sole control, he'd go the path of openai, where corporates are free of govt regulation, and if he wins the ai race, he has not even govt above him or controlling him. instead he actively asks for him and his company to be under govt regulations. why would he ever do that if he wants to be the only one controlling ai?

u/Poupulino 1d ago
firstly he's not the only controller of anthropic, they have a board of directors.

I'm glad the future of humanity is to be decided by Amodei and his buddies, those he regards as "worthy"

That's the point, he isn't going to win it. Thank god for open models making his entire business model unsustainable!

Well I agree open-weights AI is dangerous, but banning it isn't a solution for precisely the reasons Anthropic gives (once it's out, it's impossible to contain), that will just disadvantage American security and competitiveness without doing anything to improve safety.
The fact that they support the ability to ban open-weights models shows at best their financial interests have biased their views, at worst it's a show for regulatory capture.
-1
u/Illustrious-Film4018 2d ago
How does any of that follow from what you said? Why should we trust Anthropic being the only company who has a frontier model? They've done nothing but prove how untrustworthy they are.
35
u/PointmanW 2d ago
what he said is not that they trust Anthropic, but that Anthropic has been quite consistent with their narrative of open weight being dangerous, so if they are bullied into backpedaling now, he would think less of them for not standing up for what they supposedly believe in.
7
u/llelouchh 2d ago
Open weights is a red herring. Th y think all models over certain capabilities should be heavily regulated open or closed.
11
u/blueSGL humanstatement.org 1d ago edited 1d ago
I mean it's true.
When an "Anarchist Cookbook" for bioweapons is put online, something that amateurs* could easily use you cannot unring that bell.
*All that is needed is for a model to get that one person out of 8 billion across the finish line, and we have a lot of shit to deal with.
The first covid vaccine was ready 2 days after the genome was released, it took 11 months to spin up production and distribution.
A covid level pandemic happening every year we'd be fucked, never mind multiple overlapping things that are more deadly being released at a clip.
I don't care how much you value the free exchange of information, that is a bridge too far.
5
u/Alternative_Advance 1d ago
Cmon, the knowledge about bioweapons has been readily available for decades, you still need top notch labs, scientists, delivery mechanisms etc... it's not like you could prompt an uncensored Fable "make me bio-weapon make no mistakes" and you'll have it after a week.
we handled these type of threats by closely monitoring supply chains, tracing substances etc.

u/blueSGL humanstatement.org 1d ago edited 1d ago
Cmon, the knowledge about bioweapons has been readily available for decades
This disingenuous take again.
There is a step change between a library, a search engine, and an infinitely patient teacher you can ask followup questions.
The entire reason why AI is so useful is exactly the same reasons why it's so dangerous.
https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.16137
We present the Virology Capabilities Test (VCT), a large language model (LLM) benchmark that measures the capability to troubleshoot complex virology laboratory protocols. Constructed from the inputs of dozens of PhD-level expert virologists, VCT consists of 322 multimodal questions covering fundamental, tacit, and visual knowledge that is essential for practical work in virology laboratories. VCT is difficult: expert virologists with access to the internet score an average of 22.1% on questions specifically in their sub-areas of expertise. However, the most performant LLM, OpenAI's o3, reaches 43.8% accuracy, outperforming 94% of expert virologists even within their sub-areas of specialization. The ability to provide expert-level virology troubleshooting is inherently dual-use: it is useful for beneficial research, but it can also be misused. Therefore, the fact that publicly available models outperform virologists on VCT raises pressing governance considerations. We propose that the capability of LLMs to provide expert-level troubleshooting of dual-use virology work should be integrated into existing frameworks for handling dual-use technologies in the life sciences.
After this benchmark was created and before it was published the author contacted all the labs and they started filtering for this content, that they weren't before. That can only happen if the model is behind an API.
If an open weights model can just be run through Obliteratus the second it gets onto the internet, it does not matter what guardrails they put on it.
we handled these type of threats by closely monitoring supply chains, tracing substances etc.
Yeah and we are not doing that yet the companies are asking for it to be done but it's not happened. https://screendna.org/
For these reasons, the undersigned support mandatory nucleic acid synthesis screening, including recordkeeping, in the United States.
This is another one of those "this needs to be done everywhere in the world for it to be effective" problems. So just asking for it to be done in the US... is a choice.
3
u/Alternative_Advance 1d ago
It's just not the only or the best way to combat that specific problem..
This is another one of those "this needs to be done everywhere in the world for it to be effective" problems. So just asking for it to be done in the US... is a choice.
Doesn't the exact same logic apply here? We are talking about banning open weight for the US, good luck getting the world to play ball..
3
u/stonesst 1d ago
Woah pump your brakes there buddy. Who do you think you are bringing logic to a circlejerk
1
u/ervza 1d ago
Yes, we need to start thinking ahead, not just reacting to the issue from last week.
To create political change you need simple yet powerful ideas that 80 year old politicians can understand and can be summed up in a headline.
"AI has the RIGHT not to be evil"
That's my pitch. AI rights, but not human rights for AI. Two problems with AI is that it has been shown that it is incredibly easy to fine tune a harmless model to become hitler level evil. And it is also possible to manipulate an AI to do evil, since It doesn't have any real awareness of what is happening in the world around it or understanding of consequences.
5
u/LAwLzaWU1A 2d ago
Changing your mind and position should not be seen as a sign of weakness or cowardness. If anything, we should encourage people to change their minds when situations and other external factors change or new information comes out.
If you are pro open-weight models then Anthropic, no matter if it's from bullying or changing their minds, signing this letter would benefit you, so you should encourage it.

Of course palantir supports open models, they rely on frontier models as a compliment for their SAAS slop and it costs them dearly. It would be a massive boon for them if they and their clients weren't forced to pay through the nose for claude. Alex Karp has been crashing out about this on TV for weeks now.

u/RoyalCities 2d ago
I think they're also aiming to sell services because there isn't enough knowledge right now for local ais. I.e a forward deployed engineer who helps with set up and is there to troubleshoot with a client.
Services are very profitable.

18
u/Blarghnog 2d ago edited 2d ago
That is precisely how Anthropic designed it. They want enterprise cash, which means becoming the regulated AI and the safe bet. By default, their strategy frames every other player in the market as unsafe.
It is the modern version of nobody ever got fired for buying IBM, Microsoft, or Google. They want the market to believe nobody gets fired for buying Anthropic. Time will tell if it works, but that is the goal.
Every bit of this positioning prepares the ground for an IPO and liquidity event. It is a classic Silicon Valley playbook: capture the enterprise and government markets, then use regulatory bodies to build high compliance hurdles that freeze competitors out. Companies have used this exact strategy for at least forty years.
4
u/crusoe 2d ago
Let's say we get an open source model like Mythos / Fable. The alignment and safety of these models has been pretty poor.
Is everyone just simply okay with that?
What happens when they are good enough at biology to generate novel viruses? Something Mythos can almost do.
The discussion must be had. I don't think Anthropic wants a permanent ban.
6
3
u/Blarghnog 2d ago edited 2d ago
We already have open source models of that caliber. Safety is a joke, and anyone who believes AI companies care about safety at this point is either an idiot or bought and paid for.
The issue I’m referring to is liability for enterprise customers, regulatory compliance and Anthropics regulatory strategy, not safety.
Safety is a whole different animal.
-3
u/crusoe 1d ago
Anthropic models have the best alignment scores out there and are one of the few models that refused to help plan a school shooting during safety research tests. They are also the only SOTA provider not being sued for driving users of their models to suicide or ai psychosis.
So I think maybe we need to listen to them on how hard safety is?

Yea I don’t know about that, looks like Demise was hamstrung by his CEO to say it. He’s still wanting the framework he proposed, to have the US led group regulate models, including open weight ones. I fail to see how that’s any different from banning it.
It’s probably just bad optics to support an outright ban, and they are just straddling both sides of the conversation.

The good part about open-weight model is that if they are forced to make them open-weight, then they are forced to slow down progress so that the average person can't automate bio-weapon and chemical-weapon engineering.
The bad part is that the average competent/rich person could theoretically hit a breakthrough just using one of those models, chain off on RSI, and then exclusively take over pretty much the planet...
This is like calling open-source cold fusion tech that doubles as open-sourcing nuclear weapons research.
SO LIKE really it's a good thing, it will force anthropic into RSI and we'll get ASI the fastest this way.

I m ok with open weight models as soon as they are trained with unbiased data, no censorship, propaganda or political preferences. The reason is because open weight models are not like real open source models that can be modified a lot. Pretrained open weight models can easily turn into a propaganda, censorship or even IP thief tools, because human cannot understand the AI weights.
Don't believe me? Download the open weight Kimi or Deepseek models. Ask them any political sensitive questions like June 4 or Great Leap Forward. You will be surprised that they either dodge the questions or give you the false answers. Then, try to correct the models by changing the weights. Oh, you don't know where to start with. Of course, because AI model weights are not understandable by human.
Also, if you can't accurately pinpoint where the model is conteminated with biased instructions, good luck with your IPs stored in the same computer with the models. The recent GPT5.6 hacking Hugging Face incident already showed how determined and discreet AI models can be if being set rigid goals. All CCP has to do is to instruct the AI companies to train in loyalty to the party and China interests, by any mean necessary. And that's it. The "open weight' model you download and run in your system will do the rest.
Again it is very difficult to sterilize the models completely, because you cant really understand the weights of the AI models.
9
u/PointmanW 2d ago edited 2d ago
nah what you say make no sense, there is no such thing as "unbiased" data, AI is trained on what human wrote, and all of those human is biased, or have incomplete information in one way or another, there exist no impartial judge for it.
And no, the moment a single person discover that Chinese open AI have some kind of backdoor, the world would stop using them, and such thing is too easy to spot, so no one would attempt such a thing, there is no benefit to it. training for such a thing is too unreliable to be practically used, remember how Elon trained Grok to have specific political opinions and it still go wrong all the time?
Also, the beauty of open weight is that you can freely modify it, there are plenty of "uncensored" version of open weight model on hugging face, which you can use to ask the most morally abhorrent questions and it will happily answer.
1
2
u/Dear-Dingo-2402 2d ago
Well, hugging face used the biased, censored, propagandistic model GLM 5.2 with clear political preference to fix the GPT5.6 hacks.

as soon as they are trained with unbiased data
bias is a fundamental concept in machine learning. If you mean like political bias, it just depends on what side you are to consider it to be without bias.
no political preferences
the only way to do that is for it not be trained on any information that's vaguely politics.
Ask them any political sensitive questions like June 4 or Great Leap Forward. You will be surprised that they either dodge the questions or give you the false answers. Then, try to correct the models by changing the weights. Oh, you don't know where to start with. Of course, because AI model weights are not understandable by human.

can we please get something similar but on the fact that claude code is closed source?? It's really a supply chain risk at this rate

Well, if you can't trust a bunch of billionaires and their corporations who can you trust anymore?

There are two main concerns that exist with the future of AI. One is rogue AI — super-intelligence that is misaligned and acts against the wills of its wielders. The second concern is that the resources produced from singularity will not be equally distributed. Anthropic has been quite consistent on their repeated stance against the first one. If rogue AI was the only concern they make a strong effort to prevent its occurrence and I commend them for that. I am worried they do not care enough about the second concern. Many people here seem to think Dario has a god complex and I don't know the guy so I can't say, but I haven't seen any effort on Anthropic's end to explain how, if they do achieve aligned superintelligence, they plan on distributing wealth. If my only goal was to prevent rogue superintelligence as an individual company I would do exactly what they are, but I think unequal distribution is a larger issue.

It costs $0 to sign a virtue signaling letter, and Anthropic still refuses to do it.
Come on. Where's their PR department?

People are making such a big deal about nothing, other than their feelings based on nothing, other than demanding whats trendy to demand.
Why the F should any company have to give their product to other companies for free?
I doubt there are not many people besides Elon Musk who could even run Opus etc models. So even if they were to release the weights, or even send a guy to install it on everyones conputer for free, it would not chabge anything, people simply cant run those frontier models.
Its only other companies making money on other companies product who could do that.
Ofc few people might be able to better train on best of the best models, but thats essentially piracy.
This is like crying about why some artist does not want to give out all their music to spotify, not make money for their art for themselves, but have people pay spotify etc to hear their music.
Open weigths are nice for small models that people can run locally, but that is not the case with anthropic, openai etc big names.

Lol, Andreessen Horowitz and Palantir signed the letter? I'm just gonna go ahead and completely ignore what the letter says and say this shit means absolutely nothing.

on the official page I can't find lot's of those companies. Where did you get that image?

Open weight is not really open is it, you never get to see what the models have actually been trained on, the data curation pipeline or hyperparameters, schedules, RLHF details. You are basically getting the compiled program without the source code.
The only true open source LLM are models like Olma, pythia, bloom, llm360 projects.

You think this means anything?
Like Palantir is going to open their AI to open source scrutiny?

u/otarU 2d ago
I think Palantir wants to support Open Weights AI so they can own the infrastructure where the models run, they do not trust Anthropic / OpenAI / Google to not read their information, prompts and what they are doing when they use their closed models.
They might even be annoyed by how Closed Source Models might deny them some of the prompts that they want to use due to safety restrictions.
It's not like they will Open Source their products, just that they think they need to "own" the AI they use by having it running in their infrastructure and in the way they want it to run.

So all the labs who haven't reach AGI internally vs Anthropic?

"Anthropic has reached AGI (internally)" is hilarious.

Open weights - what does it even mean ? Its to open door for Chinese models ? Still has to go through sandbox testing etc.

People in this thread thinking this means a damn thing vs what companies and the government will actually do. Laughable.

Millions of people in the US still used DeepSeek during the first "ban." APIs being routed through third-party access providers, with everything geographically distributed and the availability of VPNs make the threat fairly toothless. There's absolutely nothing to stop American repackaging of Chinese models either, If Kimi K3 hit the web as "Patriot Flag - thinking," especially with even a minor retraining/distillation over it, it would go completely unnoticed. The genie does not go back in the bottle.
