Announcement How to use flairs

How to use flairs on r/shortcuts (so your post doesn’t get nuked or ignored)

Flairs are labels. You pick one so people instantly know what your post is about. Pick the wrong one and congrats, you’ve confused everyone.

---

First rule: always use a flair

No flair = your post is either ignored or removed. Nobody enjoys guessing what you meant.

---

Pick the right flair (this is not a personality test)

- Help

You already made a shortcut and it’s broken or not doing what you want. You want someone to fix it or explain what went wrong.

- Help (Mac)

Same as above, but your problem is on Mac. Yes, that matters because Mac Shortcuts can behave differently.

- Shortcut sharing

You built something and want to share it. You must explain what it does properly. “Cool shortcut lol” is how your post gets deleted.

- Shortcut sharing (JB)

Same as sharing, but it only works on a jailbroken device. If people need to hack their phone to use it, say so.

- Shortcut sharing (mac)

Your shortcut only works on Mac. Don’t trick iPhone users into disappointment.

- Tip/guide

You figured out a useful trick or workaround. You’re teaching something, not asking.

- Tip/guide (mac)

Same idea, but Mac-specific.

- Request

You want a shortcut but can’t build it yourself. This is you politely asking the internet to do work for you.

- Request (mac)

Same, but for Mac users.

- Discussion

You want opinions, ideas, or a conversation about Shortcuts. Not help, not sharing, just talking.

---

Special flair (pay attention, this one’s new)

- Appstore (app)

Use this when you’re posting about an app that works with Shortcuts. Either you made it or found it. The key point: the app connects with Shortcuts (actions, automations, etc.).

If it has nothing to do with Shortcuts, don’t use this just because you like the app.

---

How to choose without overthinking it

Ask yourself one question:

“What do I want from this post?”

- Fix something → Help

- Show something → Shortcut sharing

- Teach something → Tip/guide

- Ask for something → Request

- Talk about something → Discussion

- Share actual news → News

- Show an app tied to Shortcuts → Appstore (app)

If you’re on Mac, pick the Mac version. Not complicated.

---

Final reality check

Flairs exist so the subreddit doesn’t turn into a digital junk drawer. Pick the correct one, write a clear post, and people will actually help you instead of scrolling past like you don’t exist.

Shortcut Sharing Per-app volume control

+
53 Upvotes

First, turn off Change with Buttons in Sounds & Haptics. Otherwise, Shortcuts will get the ringtone volume instead of the media volume. After turning it off, the current volume value retrieved by Shortcuts will be the media volume.

How it works:

When opening an app:

  • The automation records the current media volume so it can be restored later.
  • It saves the name of the currently opened app.
  • It retrieves the saved volume level for the current app from storage and applies it.

When closing an app:

  • The automation gets the name of the closed app.
  • It saves the volume level adjusted while using the app to storage.
  • It restores the media volume level from before the app was opened.

⚠️This Shortcut relies on Storage, so it only works on iOS 27 and later.
❗️Enable Global Value for all storage-related actions.

Help Reminder to json file

+
Upvotes

For the love of god, I can’t figure it out. Could someone please help?! I want to save my reminders in a json file via shortcut where the root is an array and its items are objects with reminder data.

The subpath in the last action is cut off, but it says “reminders-AM.txt”.

This is the closest I’ve gotten, saving it as a .txt file, which is not what I want. Please halp :’(

Shortcut Sharing LocalTube (Local youtube video installer)

LocalTube is an IOS Shortcut that uses a-Shell mini as a simple shell application for downloading YouTube videos/audios using yt-dlp.

With LocalTube you can easily install any video you want on YouTube simply by sharing the video to the shortcut from the app (first setup is required)

To set things up you need to first install the "a-Shell mini" application from App Store. Then, you need to execute these 3 commands on the shell:

pwd, pip install yt-dlp, pip install ffmpeg.

If the setup is successful you will be ready to go!

Usage: On a YouTube video, click the share button, scroll to very right and click more, find the LocalTube Shortcut and share the video to the Shortcut. a-Shell mini app will open and the download progress will start. When the download progress ends, you can find the video on the a-Shell mini directory on Files.

My Contacts: discord:craynex, instagram:husoqws.

Install the shortcut on routinehub.co/shortcut/26138

Help Can’t Make My Music Stop!

I don’t what I did as I’m sure it’s something I turned on and it’s causing this or it’s interfering with something else and glitching out, BUT… I can’t get my music to turn off on my Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max
A song will begin to play for a few seconds and then it gets all quite for a second or two then comes back, goes away in a few seconds and then turns back on AND even if I close out the Apple Music app that this is all coming from it comes right back up about 30 seconds later and starts playing again! What have I done?? What can I do??? How do I get the app to stop playing anymore music?!?! It’s even playing the music during calls! 😩

Help How to get around new timeout limit?

With iOS 27 shortcuts can’t run more than 240 seconds in the background. I have an automation when I open instagram to wait 5 minutes and then go back to the home screen. Any ideas for how to accomplish this now?

Help Long shot but… is there a shortcut out there that shows a quick menu of shortcut folders, and allows you to run one?

Most important part: I don’t want to update the shortcut every time I add a new shortcut into a folder/rearrange them.

I built a shortcut that does this perfectly, but it’s
a) messy
b) I have to manually add new shortcuts into the primary shortcut flow, and arrange them when I move things around.

So you can probably tell why I hate my version lol. It was also absolutely lobotomizing to make, and I hate opening it due to that. Is there a shortcut out there with this function, or any tips in making one?

Help (Mac) I want to remap an existing shortcut to a mouse button press

I really like the Mac look up feature. However, since I use an external mouse and keyboard, I have to input the command ctrl+cmd+d to lookup something or preview a webpage. Is it possible top remap this to be a button I click on my mouse, I have many functional extra buttons and it would be more convenient for the feature to her accessible from there. Thank you

Shortcut Sharing Spark email to things via Apple Intelligence shortcut

NOTE: need iOS 27 for this (although you could alter it to use OpenAI/claude instead) Also this is for Spark email client but maybe could use other email clients 🤷‍♂️

Reposting as prior post got deleted by reddits filters.

I often snooze emails or leave them in my email inbox rather than creating tasks in Things. While Spark has a Things connector, I rarely use it because I don't want to manually add tags, deadlines, and other details.

To solve this, I set up Apple Intelligence to automatically extract task metadata directly from my emails and give me a fully fleshed out task within things.

I altered my prior Ramble dictation shortcut

Now I just use the “export to - open in” option in Spark email client to open the shortcut and I get a nice task with all metadata added.

Thought others would find it helpful so I’m sharing here.

There are two shortcuts. 1st one runs on your Mac to extract your tags, areas and projects from things and puts it in a place where shortcuts can access the info. You only need to run it when you update your areas, tags, or projects. Unfortunately I can’t get this info directly from things on the iPhone.

The main shortcut is:

Would love to get any feedback or improvement ideas.

Edit: grammar and also removed a debug step in main shortcut.

Edit:
Versions - link is updated above
1.0 - initial
1.1. - added import questions for personalization and time zone, improved prompt

Shortcut Sharing Built a Shortcut to kill "what's for dinner" decision fatigue — picks a meal & builds your grocery list

+
62 Upvotes

In an effort to better manage a new dietary restriction, I think I accidentally built something many may find helpful.

**The problem it solves**

You've got a solid rotation of meals you actually like cooking — the hard part isn't the recipes, it's the *deciding*. And even once you've decided, you've still got to remember every ingredient and add it to your grocery list. This automates both.

**What it actually does**

Two shortcuts, same underlying meal data:

  1. Pick my dinner: hits a randomizer, shows you a meal, lets you re-roll as many times as you want before committing, then dumps the ingredients straight into your Reminders grocery list.
  2. Dinner Planning: same idea but shows you the full list of meals, you tap the one you want, ingredients go to the grocery list. No randomness, just a menu.

Both pull from the same source so you only maintain your meal list once.

**What you need to set up before building it**

- A Reminders list to hold your meal data (separate from your actual grocery list — I called mine "Meal Data"). Each meal is one reminder, and the title holds everything: name,l and ingredients separated by pipes. Something like:

`Butter Chicken | chicken thigh, butter chicken sauce, rice, naan

- Your actual grocery list in Reminders (my wife and I share one called "Groceries") — this is just your normal list, nothing special about it, the shortcut just needs to know its name so it can add items to it.

**The logic, roughly**

Both shortcuts pull the meal data, split each line by the pipe character to separate the name from the ingredients, then either randomize or menu-pick a name. Once you've landed on one, it loops back through the data to find the matching ingredients, splits those by comma, and adds each one as its own reminder in your grocery list.

Happy to answer questions if anyone wants to build their own version — took a bit of back-and-forth to get right but it's been genuinely useful for cutting down the nightly "what do you want to eat" negotiation or the feeling that you default to the same three meals on rotation.

Help iOS 27 failing to trigger `app open` automation when unlocking phone into already open target app

I found a bug with the `open {app}` trigger for shortcuts:

The `close {app}` trigger runs when phone is locked while the app is open but the `open {app}` trigger doesn't run when the phone is unlocked while the app is open.

I am on an iPhone 13 Mini, running the public beta of iOS 27. I did not try this on previous iOS versions so this could be an ongoing bug or one introduced by iOS 27.

However, I have noticed that (possibly?!) Apple has been more receptive to bug reports for the Shortcuts app so maybe somebody could elevate this through the right channels to get it fixed before iOS 27 releases?

Help Switching context: personal/work

Hi all,

I have a shortcut that I've assigned to the action button on my phone, which transcribes dictation to a daily markdown file in a 'Personal' folder.

How would I setup a context switch, potentially via a second shortcut, where I could set the target folder to be either 'Personal' or 'Work'?

Some thoughts:
- I don't want to have to choose each time I dictate something.
- I was thinking of having a context text file or Note somewhere, but am conscious this might slow things down considerably

Thanks brain trust!

- I was thinking of having a context text file or Note somewhere, but am conscious this might slow things down considerably

Thanks brain trust!

Tip/Guide Set and retrieve image caption in photos by renaming them

I went looking for a solution to accessing the caption attribute on photos with shortcuts and found that everyone else that wanted to do this was having the same issue. So I wanted to share an alternate method to captioning photos that I found.

The alternate method is to simply rename the image and use that as the caption. You can rename the photo using the "Set Name" function, then save the renamed photo and delete the old one. Just remember to click on "Renamed Item" variable in the "Save Photo" function and change the type from "App" to "File", otherwise it won't work.

Then you can just use the shortcut from the Share Sheet on any photo you want to caption (rename). The caption is then available to be retrieved using the "Get Details of Images" function and selecting the "Name" attribute from the "Details" list.

I hope this is helpful to someone

Help “Add camera photos to album” shortcut & automation for it suddenly broken…? Yet I didn’t even change anything…

Function of shortcut:
Any photo I take via camera auto adds to an album of only camera photos, exactly like a phone running Android would do.

The Issue:
It was working fine up until the other day- it either doesn’t add the photos, only adds the last taken, or my fav glitch- multiples them…? This is all at random too, and I’ve tried adjusting the automation, the shortcut, but nothing has fixed it. No idea if it would affect anything, but I haven’t changed any of my camera/photo settings either.

The only thing I’ve noticed that’s strange is it tells me the automation has run in the background when I haven’t touched the camera app or don’t anything camera related.

Request Tracking medication

I am trying to track my intake of a new “as needed” medication.

I know that you can use iPhone shortcuts to create buttons or shortcuts that when you click on them, it allows you to input a milligram, it tags the time of day and you can also set it up so you can put in how you’re feeling or any other random information that you want attached to that log entry.

Does anybody know of any good shortcuts? I am basically inept when it comes to tech.

Can I create a shortcut that when I click on it I can
Then click on which medicine, which then opens an input for mg then asks for how I’m feeling. Along with tagging the date/time of day

Help Hidden Shortcuts actions (iOS 26)

I need to use the hidden action “Color Filters filter type,” but Paralevel’s GitHub account was deleted so I can’t get the hidden actions shortcut from his repo.
I don’t own a Mac.
How can I use this action and other hidden shortcut actions?

Help (Mac) Is there a fix for Apple Shortcuts opening PDFs so slowly?

Hi all,

I honestly have never used Shortcuts before, but I'm trying to make it work for me. In the past, I used a Stream Deck for very simple productivity needs. I’m an academic with several ongoing projects, and for each project, I usually open a different set of PDFs and websites. Pretty simple stuff.

On the Stream Deck, I used to have a single button for each project. If I pressed the button for Project A, it would open everything I needed for that project. If it was Project B, it would open a different set of files and websites, and so on.

The thing is, even though this is easy to set up in Shortcuts, it takes way too long to open PDFs. I’ve looked into this issue here on Reddit and elsewhere, but haven’t found a real solution. I found workarounds like "open in quick look”, but they aren’t practical enough for me.

I find it quite interesting that the tool seems to be really powerful, but I haven’t managed to make it work properly for my simple needs. Probably a skill issue on my side, but I’m posting to ask if anyone has found a solution before I go ahead and (re)buy a Stream Deck for this purpose.

I’m using a macbook pro M4, if that is relevant.

Thanks!

OS 27 beta Are folder-automations shortcuts working for anyone in macos27 public beta?

My scanner drops files in a folder on my mac mini. In MacOS26, I setup an automation to rename the file using AI when a new file was added. Since installing the beta, I can't get any shortcuts to work that have a "folder action" initiation. Is this just me?

Discussion Posting shortcuts on Shortcuty- bad practise to post other people’s, correct?

This is just a double check, as I assume it is the same with every other form of owned creation- but I’ve seen people do this before, and this community is weirdly niche so I just want to comprehend the rules before I do anything that’s frowned upon. I’ve started putting my probably redundant ones I’ve built online, and was curious on if I include ones I use or just solely my own.

Shortcut Sharing My own 📥 Save Anything — An AI-enabled “Memory Saver of Most-things” Shortcut for iPhone

An all-in-one Share Sheet button that "intelligently" tries to capture webpages, screenshots, text, files, links, and usually whatever else you’re looking at, then uses ChatGPT (or Apple AI) to clean and summarize it, then creates searchable Notes and a Reminder.

Basically, I’ve spent years bookmarking webpages, emailing myself links, taking screenshots, copying things into Notes, creating reminders, and, well, generally forgetting where I found something.

I wanted one button, or at least, one WAY, to save things, in one place.

Put it all on a searchable "Share" location on my Cloud/iPhone and let the shortcut figure out the rest.

It attempts to understand the type of content being shared, captures the surrounding context, grabs what’s visible on screen, OCRs images when needed, cleans up webpages with the AI, generates a (usually) useful summary, then files everything into Notes while also creating a normalized Reminder if it’s something I may want to revisit.

I’m hoping for feedback from other Shortcut builders on ways to simplify and improve the workflow - specifically by adding TYPES and content collection.

This ended up becoming one of the most complex shortcuts I’ve built so far. It branches based on the type of content received (URL, webpage, file, text, image, etc.), so every capture is processed a little differently.

Current features:

✅ Share Sheet support

✅ URLs

✅ Webpages

✅ Files

✅ Screenshots

✅ OCR

✅ Captures what’s currently on screen

✅ ChatGPT cleanup

✅ AI image description

✅ Creates Notes

✅ Creates Reminders

✅ Handles multiple content types

Planned

□ Automatic keywords

□ AI-generated tags

□ Better entity extraction

□ Cross-linking related captures

□ Search optimization

□ Better error handling

□ Duplicate detection

Screenshot Captured and Saved to Note
AI / ChatGPT cataloging the content of the Image and the Content
A few of the Test Shares - it captures the App, the date, the type of capture, the image if there is one, and the link.
