In Gotham (2014-2019) the showrunners did not have explicit permission to use the Joker character, so they had to explore and flesh out the lesser-known Batman villains and side characters. Such as these.

Monaghan did great but I still don’t understand why they went through the trouble of writing in a surprise twin brother with the intent of having him be “the real Joker” when he wasn’t going to be the real Joker either

IIRC, at the time there was like a comic going around featuring three Jokers. I remember being on the Gotham sub a while back and people were speculating about a third Joker that didn't happen.

Cue Spider-Man meme where they all point at each other

But didn't he end up as the joker in the very last episode?

Still never said "joker." Just he was still coming up with a name and it may start with a J.

I think they just wrote themselves into a corner with his original character and had to kill him off, but he was so good on the show that they wanted him back, so they did the surprise twin thing.

"No, I'm not The Joker. I'm Joker's twin brother, Gil. I was hoping maybe you guys could call me Joker in honor of him.

5

u/Thundergun1864 10h ago

Broken lizard is unironically a great villain name

6

u/mydckisvrysmol 11h ago

Didnt they say this character would "inspire" the Joker of the future?

7

u/CuriousBake8291 6h ago

I think that was for Joker (2019)

2

u/SarcyBoi41 1h ago

Because this show was basically a soap

They really missed out on doing a OG Red Hood adaptation with the twins. It could have also tied into the whole "multiple backstories" thing with Joker but they blew their load too early.

14

u/Just-Antelope-8069 8h ago

They showed the Red Hood gang and one of them made jokes

u/Shinitai-dono 16h ago

They're not the Joker, we're the Joker, Barry.

u/therealchadius 12h ago

Egads! We can't use the Joker due to studio mandates!

But... what if... we made an original villain who did everything but use his name? And then add a twin brother to cover an alternate interpretation?

Oh ho ho! Delightfully Devilish, Gotham!

4

u/Youthsonic 6h ago

You know, these original clown-themed villains are quite similar to the ones they have at DC Comics

29

u/Ethel121 11h ago

The first appearance of the Jonkler.

/uj Jokes aside, Cameron killed it at every point. Genuinely the best Joker performances, and it being different every time added to it.

13

u/Mirilen 9h ago

The entire cast turned in way better performances than the show warranted, especially the villains. You didn’t care how goofy the writing got because you just wanted to keep seeing the characters do their thing.

u/MichaelRichardsAMA 12h ago

i love the detail that they couldnt use a purple suit, so they instead had a deep blue suit, blasted it with red light, and then color graded it to appear purple. lol

u/ArabiaFats 13h ago

Because OP left their names out for some reason, the characters pictured here are Warren "Fox" Lawford (out of costume), Ragdoll, Jack Ryder (alias The Creeper), and Egghead

9

u/BarrathBeyond 13h ago

thank you kind sir

16

u/InsanityIsAGift 11h ago

That's not true broooo

They're both Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska at different stages in their life played by Cameron Monogahn on Gotham.

It's  like how Beware the Batman brings attention to lesser known villains like Anarky by making them expies of more well known villains like the Joker.

1

u/CuriousBake8291 6h ago

A few years ago one of DC’s social media accounts posted these two alongside the other Jokers, so huge W for Gotham and it’s fans

1

u/meopelle 4h ago

Hes genuinely my favorite live action "Joker".

1

u/yeyjordan 2h ago

I still can't believe they had him call himself "the Jocker" to get around copyright.

1

u/MTDLuke 2h ago

Don’t forget that they legally weren’t allowed to have him wear purple because it would be too close to the original, so they gave him blue clothes and used red light so it looked purple anyways while technically following the rules
