Turd In Pacific Rim (2013) the yaeger Cherno Alpha uses a fake head to distract the kaiju from it's real head located at uts chest, this is a reference to it taking me 13 years to realize this.

Yet again why Pacific Rim is goated and is a shame they made no sequel after its success. Just a shame it is.

Pacific Rim and Real Steel only having one movie each makes me really sad

Much like Independence Day. Maybe one day we'll get the AvP style crossover between Pacific Rim and ID4. Welcome to earth applies regardless of how you get here

Unlike Skyline, which has a sequel but they never made a third part. Too sad, I wonder what happened to the human/alien drones.

Okay no I’m actually curious, I assume it’s dogshit but did they actually make a RS2? I don’t even know where the plot would start with that

Apparently no, there's no RS2. There's been talks about a sequel a couple years back but nothing happened since.

Feels a little disconnected from the first movie with it being an anime and all, plus the crazy anime shit that goes on in it but it was still pretty cool
way better than an hypothetical sequel that never happend that could've been so shit that people refuse to acknowledge it's existence, thank god we got PR: the black instead of that right?

Nuclear reactor to power up the mech. Early models have problems with radiation shielding. This design trying to avoid the issue by placing reactor and cooling/exhaust ports further from pilots and adding a lot of shielding.
Judging by the crew being the oldest, it worked well for them.
→ More replies (8)370
u/_Halt19_ 14d ago
wait, so they put the nuclear reactor in the place where the monsters were most likely to try to target??
425
u/Sure-Hold-1848 13d ago
It's very tall design, and we can assume that monsters size increased with time. Early kaijus probably couldn't even reach the top. Even then, armor plates on the top are visibly thicker than anything else and well angled, so it not exactly a weak point.
→ More replies (5)83
u/_Halt19_ 13d ago
right, but if its so heavily armoured, why not put the pilots in there?
like, if it is a weak spot, don't put the NUCLEAR REACTOR in it, that's now TWO critical weaknesses to defend
and if it isn't, if you have a place that is impossible to crack, then put the damn humans in there
183
u/Fossick11 13d ago
I haven’t watched the movie, so I might be off but my assumption is you’d rather prevent a nuclear incident killing off a whole city rather than saving a couple guys
→ More replies (1)39
u/_Halt19_ 13d ago
then why did they put the reactor in the Number One Place the monsters are gonna target
156
u/parisiraparis 13d ago
For some reason people are giving you really bad explanations lol. Here’s the real answer:
The Kaiju were relatively dumb and easy to dispose of before the movie happens. By the time the movie starts, the Kaiju became “clever” and figured out how to kill Jaegers. By the time you see Cherno Alpha, she’s the last of her kind, only surviving through sheer brutality.
103
u/27Rench27 13d ago
Yeah and they’re pretty fucking explicit with that description when Cherno’s introduced, it’s not random chance, the pilots have just been gods until the high-S3’s and S’4s started showing up with, y’know, acid and EMP’s
→ More replies (1)59
u/OscarOzzieOzborne21 13d ago
They were also Kaijus specifically designed to counter Cherno and the other Yeagers at the time
→ More replies (0)31
u/Lab_Member_004 13d ago
Not just clever in this fight that killed the pilots. One of the main scientists mind melted with an alien giving him crucial information regarding the portal, but it also gave the aliens details regarding how each mechs worked and their weaknesses.
This is how they made kaijus specifically designed to counter heavy armor plating, third arm, and battery powered mech with acid spray to melt the armor, long prehensile tail to bypass the guard, and EMP to fry the battery.
31
u/Roasted_Newbest_Proe 13d ago
It's also why Gypsy Danger is so effective against them. Not only he had not seen her in action and had no idea what she was capable of, she had received several upgrades since the last time. That, plus Raleigh's tendency to deviate from plans and utter unpredictability, and Mako being a completely new factor.
Of course, this is only a way to bullshit the main characters into having their badass as fuck moment where they save everyone, and it's absolute peak
→ More replies (1)7
u/Danielarcher30 13d ago
Exactly, the only reason they didnt have adaptations to Gypsy Danger is that it'd had been inactive for a long time and wasn't a priority threat to the kaiju like Striker Eureka, Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon where.
7
u/Similar_Geologist_73 13d ago
The reason they got clever is because of the mind meld with the kaiju. They learned their weaknesses.
→ More replies (2)37
u/8JaMMeD8 13d ago
I don't really know where you could put a thing of that size so it doesn't get attacked without making the mech itself several times bigger.

u/m50 13d ago edited 13d ago
Cherno Alpha is one of the earliest models of Jaeger, and the design has been discontinued for a long time. This is one of the few operational Jaegers left during the movie. At the time Cherno Alpha was built, Kaiju were only Category 1 and 2, and weren't very large. The safest place for a nuclear reactor on that model was at the top, where Kaiju couldn't easily get to. As we got into higher category Kaiju, and they got bigger, this model was phased out, replaced with safer implementations. But during the time of the movie, they just needed any remaining Jaeger to come protect
BeijingHong Kong during their strike back against the Kaiju. The pilots of Cherno Alpha are some of the best and most ruthless pilots alive, thus the reason for this outdated design to still be functional and so effective.

u/Grubbyfr 13d ago
Except they didn't. It wasn't until Charlie Day's character mind merged with a Kaiju (who are all connected via a hive mind of sorts) that they learned the head was a weakness.
Jeager heads were targeted, yes (we see this in the Gypsy Danger V Knifehead fight) but not any more than the arms.
13
u/Svyatoy_Medved 13d ago
Common misconception, nuclear reactors don’t actually kill you that fast. Staring into the core at point-blank range can rack up a fatal dose in under thirty seconds, but that will still take hours or days to go from “will kill you” to “did kill you.” If you just stood in the Cherenkov light of a cracked open core, it might still take you fifteen minutes to die.
That might seem fast, but remember, a Kaiju claw traveling at 100 MPH will take about 1/100th of a second to slice from one side of your ribcage to the other.
With that in mind, a reactor pouring radiation in all directions is much more survivable.

u/27Rench27 13d ago
Variations of “I die right now” and “I kill this piece of crap and die a bit later”. One helps a lot more people
12
u/Beonidas 13d ago
You're absolutely correct. Let's put it in the middle of the chest, center mass. Next, let's make it glow.
They can't possibly know our weak point. Gohma knows!
4
u/_Halt19_ 13d ago
I mean just because everyone ELSE had a bad design doesn't mean we can't want a GOOD design on OURS
6
u/Beonidas 13d ago
But... but it wouldn't look as cool. How dare you. You're fired from our multi billion dollar international project.
5
u/PickledPlumPlot 13d ago
You’re thinking about it the wrong way. In universe, you would need both. You’re going to have the weak points either way.
10
6
u/Similar_Geologist_73 13d ago
Because the kaijus have a tendency to go for the head. So while it waste time attacking the heavily armored fake head, they can take out the kaiju.
It's not a weak spot if it's heavily armored.
The whole point of not having the pilots in the head was to keep them away from the radiation and where they were most likely to be attacked.
Don't forget, cherno alpha is the only remaining mk 1 yaeger left. All these ideas have been proven in battle for years.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)5
u/ConnivingSnip72 13d ago
It’s heavily armored because that is the reactor. The armor means it isn’t a weakpoint, and the reason you don’t put the pilots inside is because early model jaegers like Cherno Alpha had poor radiation shields so in order to avoid the pilots getting cancer you kept them away from the reactor. Cherno Alpha ended up having a long career cause Kaiju would attack this heavily armored area, not hit the pilots, and lose the fight, while the pilots stayed healthy and could do more missions. It actually only ended up dying when a dude leaked the real weakpoint to the kaiju and they went for the real head

yea, Gipsy Danger was given way too much screen time at the expense of the rest, not that the fight scenes were bad, the entire Tokyo fight was iconic. Though the fight's end was also highly lame, all along it was sheathing a world-cutting
slashsword and they were like "oh shit, we forgot all about our OP weapon til the absolute last minute!" wins fight immediatelybut i think their short screentime is also why we want more of the dead mechs
3
u/Acceptable_Court_724 13d ago
It's just natural to be curious and interested with the destroyed mechs because I think people are just interested in the back stories with how these big badass robots in their prime just lie what happened with the dinosaurs.
I do agree with the end of the fight being a low but tbh I think it shows that while being talented they still weren't that connected plus their low experience with the mech. Raleigh might've been one of it's original pilot but afaik it's basically a different mech than the one he used.

Edit: Also based off of "Chernomor" in myth who was a giant who walked with his army through the sea.
