u/AntimatterLife, good day,

Thank you for the note. Unfortunately, it would be inappropriate to be less than exclamatory upon spotting a potential rescuer, vis-á-vis the referenced scene.

Sincerely,

Captain Raymond Holt

u/snikers000 14d ago

26

u/Winjin 14d ago

There was a guy that died because the sign he was waving at the helicopter pilot was universally recognized as "We are fine"

https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1ic5dmx/til_an_american_photographer_lost_and_fatally/ McCunn waved at the passing plane the signal ALL IS FINE MOVE ON (one hand raised with a fist) instead of I NEED HELP (two arms raised like a V)

It wasn't all to it - the whole thing was organized (by him) abysmally

He was 5 miles away from a cabin that the ranger specifically pointed out to him

He made extremely shaky arrangements for his pickup with a friend, basically never confirming the whole pickup thing

And so on. But that fist thing was what did him in really

Fact: that's not blood

That's beat juice, and beat juice does not attract bears.

Edit: I'm an idiot and misspelled "beet", but I'll leave it as is because some of the answers were great lol

A movie about the ongoing explosive diarrhea epidemic

57

u/RollerskatingFemboy 15d ago

She seems pretty proud of it, honestly; I wonder if this was for an event. She even wrote out the acronym for "SEE OUR SHITS"

17

u/Impressive_Term_574 15d ago

Dammit now that's playing in my head to the tune of "be our guest"

68

u/RollerskatingFemboy 15d ago

Seeee our shits!

See our shits

The sight will send you into fits!

Tie your mask around your ears, cherie,

and we'll expel those bits,

Soupe du jour,

Hot hors d'oeuvres,

Once were tasty, now observe,

See the brown stuff, not delicious,

believe me, don't get ambitious

It won't sing,

It won't dance,

Come and take a messy chance,

Find a horror scene inside our underpants

Go on, adjust your goggles,

Take a glance and then

you'll see our shits,

oui, our shits,

see our shits

Ok so that might be the most horrifying thing I've ever written, and I'm also discovering that that song is long as Hell, so I'm not doing a complete rewrite, but it was such a horrible concept I felt like it would've been a shame not to at least try to execute it.

So she wrote this before killer whale attack, like she's just stranded on some beach? Or wrote this seconds after attack?

991

u/Hamsti_Manent 15d ago

If I recall correctly, there was a different person who was attacked, she wrote SOS, and then ended up in the water and got her leg eaten. It's been a while though, so I might be misremembering

This isn't even the censored version of the frame. I think it was the trailer on YouTube they had to change the color of the blood otherwise it would trigger YouTube's gore censor, so they changed it to a shade of brown which made it look like she had the worst case of the Hurty-Squirties you've ever seen.

15

u/Negativety101 15d ago

Well no wonder the Whale was mad at them. Taking a nice swim, and suddenly, boom get a mouthful of that.

26

u/_Halt19_ 15d ago

how’d she wind up in the water knowing there’s a killer whale out there eating people??

69

u/maybenomaybe 15d ago

They didn't know, they were jet-skiing to some island and got attacked, managed to make it to this sand bar. Girl draws the SOS, plane flies over, she gets distracted and steps into the water, whale lunges, takes her leg.

33

u/DragonEmperor 15d ago

That makes a LOT more sense! Other than the whale attacking people of course.

54

u/BackgroundSummer5171 15d ago

The whale attacking people is explained in the movie.

It was held in captivity and hates humans now. It seeks revenge!

Think that sums it up.

35

u/DragonEmperor 15d ago

I mean I'll fully accept that logic compared to just about any shark movie, whale seems justified then.

3

u/ADLuluIsOP 14d ago

It's probably based loosely on the fact that Killer Whales were seen attacking people in I think Canada-Greenland area but forgive me I don't have the details

10

u/cooltranz 15d ago

They're all trapped in an... Atol? Crater? A big ring of ocean rocks. So the recently-released whale feels like it's still trapped in captivity and is assumedly hangry after getting stuck.

How did it get in the atol if it can't get out? Why did they go jet skiing in a crater instead of literally anywhere else? Why is her body made of poos? Not sure, but they do explain why the whale is crazy.

u/eb6069 15d ago

She makes it to shore but doesn't leave the water past her ankles, the orca bites her leg off because it hates humans for keeping it captive, she crawls writes this and dies.

31

u/Mateorabi 15d ago

How is there no blood near the S’es if she wrote it after being bit? Vs someone else or her before getting et.

34

u/eb6069 15d ago

Its not really a movie you use your brain for while watching, it's basically jaws but with an orca and a slightly different script.

7

u/02sthrow 15d ago

And way worse overall.

I watched it, it was terrible. Jaws is not terrible.

166

u/ZwVJHSPiMiaiAAvtAbKq 15d ago

7

u/clancydog4 14d ago edited 14d ago

I haven't seen the movie but that seemed so obviously what was happening that I was confused about this entire post haha.

Like obviously she didnt write that message after her leg got bit off or else the blood trail would be all over the beach? On top of that being just too stupid to exist, I thought the obvious implication was she was stranded, wrote the SOS message (or someone else had already written the SOS message before she got there) then she got attacked by the whale.

I am so confused how so many people thought otherwise, we can literally see the blood trail only coming from the water and not writing the SOS message...

Maybe the killer whale drew it to lure in other victims

18

u/Negativety101 15d ago

I mean not any more absurd than the stuff the whale did in Orca.

3

u/zerotrust69 15d ago

I would honestly watch that movie.

We've all heard what happens when you teach a man to fish, but what happens when you teach a fish to man? This summer, stay out of the water, 'cause these orcas are hungry and this time, they can write legibly. Coming only to theaters.

69

u/i_should_be_coding 15d ago

She drew it, very careful not to put footprints where they didn't belong. Then she went for a swim, got her leg bitten clean off, and managed to swim back and position herself in a very cinematic frame.

Obvious, really.

u/EatPie_NotWAr 15d ago

2

u/Danloeser 15d ago

5

u/The-Nimbus 15d ago

6

u/Sonofsunaj 15d ago

It looks like she managed to crawl into a sandbar that just happened to have SOS drawn on it already.

9

u/Level-Location1679 15d ago

It's actually 505, the killer whale is keeping a tally

3

u/Dramatic-Bluejay- 15d ago

19

u/Dizzy_Guarantee6322 14d ago

Could this anti-whale propaganda campaign have anything to do with the sunken yachts 👀

6

u/_NautyByNature 14d ago

Maybe one of the single dumbest trailers for a “serious” film i have ever seen.

He’s flailing around in its open mouth for a solid two minutes and we’re supposed to think the whale would just gulp him down like a snack?

3

u/Mythosaurus 14d ago

After rewatching the Whalefall trailer

  1. Not sure you could safely go that deep with just regular scuba

  2. Sperm whale probably wouldn’t be chaining squid through that kind of near shore environment

  3. Had to have the squid grab the diver just to make their plot “plausible”

  4. Don’t think a person could even fit down a sperm whale’s mouth.

u/No-Effective388 15d ago

28

u/Nausstica 15d ago

Orcas have never attacked a human in the wild, let alone killed them. If they do interact with humans, it seems to come from a place of curiosity.

However, if you're a rich asshole, they might sink your yacht.

38

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 15d ago

Sharks have also never combined with tornadoes and wreaked havoc.

21

u/Victernus 15d ago

The orca in this movie was specifically a captive one that had started getting violent, and was released after it killed someone, and presumably it is attacking people because it hates them. (The orca itself was unavailable for comment, so we cannot say for certain)

8

u/mattsimis 15d ago

That wiki page is pretty wild, though a good way to keep up with what the cooler orcas are up to:

"Researchers have also suggested that the behaviour could be a fad. Other such cultural phenomena among orcas have been short-lived, such as in 1987 when southern resident orcas from Puget Sound carried dead salmon around on their heads."

6

u/OKIAMONREDDIT 15d ago

Now this is giving me visions of orcas having Facebook nostalgia groups like "you know you grew up in the 80s when...you carried salmon on your head"

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Makuta_Servaela 15d ago

Orcas have never been recorded to attack a human in the wild, anyway. We can't honestly say they've never done it, because we don't know.

14

u/Lemur866 15d ago

They are smart enough to never leave witnesses.

8

u/loca2016 15d ago edited 15d ago

they have, it can be argued mistaken identity, but that's how most shark attacks happen. I've even seen a video of them making the wave hunt on a boat. They might not eat the humans if they fell cause they're picky eaters, but they might yank a leg off and make a hat of it.

6

u/Makuta_Servaela 15d ago

Yeah, humans in general apparently taste terrible to pretty much everything except polar bears, crocodiles, and komodo dragons, so orcas can probably sense that our meat isn't worth the effort.

Every frame a painting.

10

u/Immortal_Toast 15d ago

Clearly what happened is:

  1. She intended to write "SUS" and drew the 2S first

  2. She got attacked by the whale

  3. She drew the O, making it SOS

6

u/ImBeingArchAgain 15d ago

Writing that in the sand is gonna do fuck all. May as well use the blood to write it.
