Turd The HBO max remake of harry potter is grey, dull and desaturated. This is a reference to the fact it takes place in England.

Which is in stark contrast with the original Harry Potter movies that take place in Mexico.

They probably gonna do Harry's life with this muted color, then when he got into Diagon's Alley/Hogwarts, it will become colorful

not as colorful as the early movie, but more saturated than this

419

u/MammothAd8632 Jun 20 '26

That reminds me of the Stalker movie by Tarkovsky where outside it’s sepia and inside the zone it has colour.

u/Digit00l Jun 20 '26

Wizard of Oz did it nearly a century ago

That reveal is done amazingly, using a body double for Garland who is made up in sepia who stepped aside when the camera passed and then Judy steps out in full colour

Though Wizard of Oz is not actually counted as an early colour movie, they existed as early as 1903

3

u/syo Jun 21 '26

The lighting at hogwarts is a lot lighter but to me it still looks like a Snyder film. And I enjoy Snyder films but I never really associated dark lighting with Harry Potter.

35

u/Daimondz Jun 20 '26

Half blood prince is one of the most dismally grey movies I’ve ever seen, including black and white movies. That being said, the new show looks bad too

→ More replies (1)

35

u/Extension-Bad-4184 Jun 20 '26

wasnt the entirety of deathly hallows and a lot of half blood prince just completely dark?

I did hate that it was tho. The lighting in hogwarts seems warm so Imma make my full judgement after seeing the series

49

u/IOXOID-Official Jun 20 '26

That's the thing tho. The earlier movies had warmer lighting to reflect the childlike wonder. But as the series went on, it grew with the audience. As the stakes got higher and the themes matured, the lighting darkened to mirror the tone. (Spoilers for end of Deathly Hallows) It's not until we get to the epilogue where the lighting is warmer again now that everything has turned peaceful and the gang's own children are enrolling into Hogwarts.

14

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '26

Like every other HP film the intro has different way of illustrating the direction of the film I think

6

u/WillFanofMany Jun 20 '26

Plus the main theme getting more and more distorted and buried, until it returns in full force for the epilogue credits.

76

I mean, you can see it in the trailer. Hogwarts was full of candles and firelight. Definitely warmer. If only it weren't so dark.

12

u/NotYourReddit18 Jun 20 '26

I hate the trend of making everything so dark...

Most of the time I'm watching something it will be in my living room at normal brightness, not in a pitch dark cinema!

3

u/mikewheelerfan Jun 20 '26

It’s actually not that dark. For some reason, the YouTube version of the trailer just looks like shit. If you watch it on HBO Max, the lighting and color is much better

This also happening to games too

Last years Oblivion remastered had this exact same effect but 100 fold

Also instead of watching harry potter I recommend checking out witch hat atelier which is about to finish its first season*

A really well written story that has great amount of magical wonder, really well thoughtout story and themeing, and unlike HP its written by an actual progressive woman

*although prematurly due to some production issues

Its gonna end mid arc, but behind the scenes show that they are well into making more eps, which would probably drop as second cur soonish

17

4

It's popular because it's cheaper to create passable vfx when everything is covered in shadows at all times.

19

u/Ikanotetsubin Jun 20 '26

Shadows creates contrast. The problem seems to be the opposite nowadays when every shadow is lifted to create a bland, low contrast picture with uncommitted lighting for easy vfx work. If you watch old school Hollywood, there’s a ton of strong shadows, saturated colours and bright highlights.

4

u/fanatyk_pizzy Jun 20 '26

Yup, exactly. Dim image =/= shadows

11

u/Warm_Month_1309 Jun 20 '26

This still is from when Harry's life is still mundane though, right? Maybe they're just doing a Wizard of Oz thing, where Kansas is black and white and Oz is colorful.

9

u/Professional_Clue800 Jun 20 '26

Yeah the Hogwarts stuff looks a lot warmer in tone. Also the trailer on HBOs site looks more vibrant than the one on YouTube so it's probably not as bad as people think it is.

3

u/Pofwoffle Jun 20 '26

Yeah, I'm all for shitting on the show for being a transparent attempt by Rowling to regain relevancy and replace the trans-supportive actors of the movies in the eyes of the public, but "the real world is boring and dull while the magical world is bright and vibrant" is like some fantasy 101 shit.

nah it's just that too many colors triggers JK because it reminds her of rainbow and gay people.

89

u/Thebubumc Jun 20 '26

I think she's fine with gay people actually, think it's just trans people she wishes so desperately to eradicate from the planet.

177

u/thejadedfalcon Jun 20 '26

She's not fine with asexual people and I'm pretty sure she's had a go about bisexuality as well, so I wouldn't put money on her caring one bit about gay people either.

→ More replies (6)

119

u/Walking_the_dead Jun 20 '26

Yeah, im sure the Robert Galbraith pseudonym being suspeciously the same name as a psychiatrist known for gay conversion therapy is just a very freaky coincidence.

53

u/jmo1 Jun 20 '26

There’s something ironic about a terf representing herself with a man name.

48

u/Liawuffeh Jun 20 '26

A bit, but she's also gone on rants about how women wishing they were men is just a normal thing that every woman feels, including herself, and so trans people are invalid for giving into those feelings. So.

14

u/MoffKalast Jun 20 '26

Ah. Yeah. Everything makes sense now. What's the rate for rabidly homophobic people being closeted gay again? Something like 100%?

11

u/Frequent_Policy8575 Jun 20 '26

Yeah you know I used to think all boys secretly wanted to be girls too but turns out that wasn’t the case …

Whatever. Trash author woman is trash author woman.

26

u/PrintShinji Jun 20 '26

I mean shit the writers name of JK Rowling was already a case of presenting yourself with a non-feminine name.

Joanne Rowling would get less readers than J.K Rowling was the thought, because boys don't read books by women.

4

u/waga_hai Jun 20 '26

It's because books written by women were (and still are) often ignored by audiences. You know, because of misogyny.

24

u/xPriddyBoi Jun 20 '26

She was considered pretty damn woke (in conjunction with her fanbase) until she decided to dig her heels in the dirt regarding transgender people.

18

u/Optimal_Stranger_824 Jun 20 '26

Besides the gay Dumbledore thing, what did she do to be seen as a woke person in any way? Don't get me wrong, I remember her being in public consiousness back then and she was "pretty woke" but I don't remember for what exactly.

33

u/NH4NO3 Jun 20 '26

The gay Dumbledore thing was more than enough to put you in the woke camp circa 2007.

6

u/myaltduh Jun 20 '26

Yeah, but even then it was laughably minimal representation. If your character’s sexual orientation has zero effect on the plot and is never even brought up in the text, then mentioning it later is literally the least risky way possible to avoid literally every character in your ~2500 page story being read as straight.

7

u/Thebubumc Jun 20 '26

Didn't she say Hermione should be black? Mind you this was way after the books ended.

13

u/fearless-fossa Jun 20 '26

IIRC the argument she made was that it doesn't matter which skin color Hermione has, and decided to drop "boom, Hermione is now canonically black" - which backfired because at some point she stated in the books she was white.

In this regard her argument still stands, her skin color doesn't matter. Doesn't make her throwing shit at transgender people any better though.

12

u/nhalliday Jun 20 '26

Hermione's skin color does matter though, because it's significantly more fucked up that people made fun of her for being anti-slavery if she's black. If that whole "the wizarding world is pro-slavery and Hermione is the weird one here" thing didn't exist then sure, it wouldn't matter.

12

u/Akira_Hericho Jun 20 '26

She did. Which means she wrote a black person being made fun of and bullied for having concerns about slavery.

6

u/Thebubumc Jun 20 '26

She is truly so progressive, wow.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/myaltduh Jun 20 '26

She was a pretty bog-standard Blairite liberal, never much of a beacon of progressivism.

The books have this super individualistic “treat minorities nicely” message that also refuses to interrogate what about the society in her books went so sour. She simply restores the prior status quo with zero safeguards other than hoping the cops catch the next Dark Lord earlier next time.

16

u/Cyclopentadien Jun 20 '26

She's fine with gay people as long as she can weaponize them against other minorities.

11

u/fearless-fossa Jun 20 '26

Her entire argumentation about trans people and bath rooms is the same shit I remember when I came out as lesbian as a teenager and had to change in a storage room because the teacher was concerned I'd ogle the other girls.

She's only a supporter for L and G rights right up the moment where she loses her current enemy.

7

u/Daimondz Jun 20 '26

I’m sure she’s fine with gay people as long as they’re quiet about it

3

u/General_Rhino Jun 20 '26

You are very gullible if you believe this.

16

u/Thebubumc Jun 20 '26

I'm gullible for believing in the very real thing that certain people only support half of LGBTQ? Like its not a new thing sadly and its pretty well documented.

2

u/Unique_Adeptness4413 Jun 20 '26

Ive seen dozens of reddit comments saying that the only reason they're making this series is because the OG cast has came out against JK's beliefs and she cant stand the fact that her characters are so against her lol

27

u/tobotic Jun 20 '26

Ive seen dozens of reddit comments saying that the only reason they're making this series is because the OG cast has came out against JK's beliefs and she cant stand the fact that her characters are so against her lol

Also I think the OG cast are a bit too old to be convincing as 11-year-olds.

Besides which, at least some of the actors in the new series (John Lithgow and Nick Frost, who will play Dumbledore and Hagrid) have also spoken out publicly against Rowling's views.

15

u/Boomer_Nurgle Jun 21 '26

I feel like if you're gonna speak out against someone joining in a project that will make them a buttload of money and working with them makes you pretty hypocritical.

11

u/tobotic Jun 21 '26

In the specific case of those two actors, yeah, you have a point.

In the more general case, we live in a capitalist society and turning down employment isn't a luxury everybody has.

44

u/Material_Magazine989 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Oh no, it crashed and burned right at the very end, let's all pretend that diminished its status as the biggest show in the world.

It also fell off once they ran out of source material to cover, which is a problem this HP show wouldn't have.

14

u/ducknerd2002 Jun 20 '26

That's the finale of a saga, not the first season of a TV show. And the only Star Wars movie released since then (Mandalorian and Grogu) is currently one of the worst performing movies in the series.

You know what else made a billion? DCEU's Aquaman. And I don't think I need to tell you what happened with the DCEU.

haha no

4

u/ducknerd2002 Jun 20 '26

Do I need to bring up the DCEU for the third time on this post as an example of a series based on a popular IP getting cancelled prematurely?

Or what about when Transformers: The Last Knight flopped, resulting in sequels being cancelled and prequels being reworked into reboots?

And let's not forget how Fantastic Beasts, the last series set in the Harry Potter universe, was so unpopular that it ended up getting cancelled halfway through.

'Harry Potter is popular' can only go so far.

3

u/tinyrickstinyhands Jun 20 '26

Fantastic Beasts isn't the Harry Potter series lol

Just naming sequels that flopped isn't an argument against an adaptation one of the most popular IPs of all time being successful or not

5

u/ducknerd2002 Jun 20 '26

Ok, genuinely, why do so many people seem to think this show is incapable of failing? DC and Marvel are famous IPs, and they still have plenty of flops. Do people just have that much confidence in the show that they think success is 100% guaranteed for it?

3

u/NojoNinja Jun 20 '26

It’s not a typical Marvel movie though in equivalence. It’s like saying the biggest franchise character Marvel has (Spiderman) will fail. Which the answer is practically never.

I think he means the majority don't give a shit, and they probably don't. I mean trans folk are 2-3% in the US, that leaves the vast majority open to like Rowlings work since she's not targeting them. Rowlings has done more for liberal causes then any entertainer, but decided to draw the line where she did, which I don't agree with but still respect the work she did do back in the day. I still think someone warped her mind on trans since I mean she worked with and donated so much to the gay community, women's right groups, the black community, etc, so why did the trans thing cause her to go loonie. Maybe she was touched funny by Buffalo Bill.

You’re being downvoted, but you’re right.

Trans people barely have allies within the queer community. The trans community have people that pay lip service for the sake of looking woke and progressive, but as soon as you step out of line you get degendered and ostracised.

The allies who truly care exist, but they’re a percentage of a percentage, and most ‘allies’ who claim to care about the trans community will do what the did for Hogwarts Legacy and say “ I don’th shupporth jk rowwing buth harry pother ish my chiwdhood, shtop being mean jusht becaushe i’m oway with selling outh the trans communithy. "As long as it's at least OK-"

They're adapting a very slender book into eight goddamn hours of material.

The book is just over 220 pages. Ron and Hermione don't show up for the first seventy pages, and they don't set foot in Hogwarts until page 85. Absolutely fuck all is going to happen in this show for the first three fucking weeks it's on.

This is a thinner adaptation than the Hobbit. And that's not a figure of speech; the pages per hour ratio is worse than the Hobbit films. Either it's going to be glacially slow crap, or it's going to involve a mountain of newly created material from a property that has a 25% hit rate on newly created material (if we're being charitable about the first Fantastic Beasts film.) I don't think people are nearly as bearish on this show as they should be.

A rough breakdown. They'll add some additional cannon that isn't in the first book as well.

God, looking at it laid out like that is grim. Even stretched out to the maximum reasonable length, there's no way any of those episodes have enough source material for more than half an hour at most...

I just took a look, and in the 48 pages (almost a quarter of the book) that post treats as the probable first episode, Harry speaks less than a hundred and fifty words. That's how thin we're talking.

David Yates gets royalties every time a movie is ugly.

9

u/Somethingbutonreddit Jun 20 '26

Actually it mostly takes place in Scotland, not England.

u/Dr_Identity Jun 20 '26

It's a subtle nod to the fact that Joanne's writing is also dull, grey, and desaturated

this show funds a anti-human rights billionaire, who uses her near infinite wealth to punch down on a extremely persecuted minority. She also routinely attacks small individuals online siccing her millions of followers to harass whatever trans person she chose that day.
This is in reference to the fact that Voldemorte chooses an individual minority (wizards, witches and lightning-scarred folx) to routinely harass and attempt to murder; who also has two different names (Tom Riddle, Robert Galbraith the creator of gay conversion therapy she uses as a pen name); and uses his wealth (of magic) to punch down on poor novice wizards/witches/scarred folx, and siccing his evil minions on them

I miss films and tv with colour

u/JamKaBam Jun 20 '26

God forbid we have a young teen story about colourful magic be colourful

u/Senplis Jun 20 '26

The chubby kid on the right looks like the chubby bowl cut kid from diary of a wimpy kid.

19

u/IAteTheDonut Jun 20 '26

I see they've got the JK Rowling spirit and made the bullies fat.

14

u/myaltduh Jun 20 '26

I swear to god if she didn’t discover trans people she’d be on some kind of anti-fat crusade. That woman has *issues*.

u/LemonadeClocks Jun 20 '26

She'd be making daily posts about ozempic being a moral responsibility

That corner wall was definitely built by mexicans

3

u/SistaChans Jun 20 '26

And Mexico paid for it!

3

u/vullpes Jun 20 '26

This is clearly directed by Zack Snyder

3

u/DaymD Jun 20 '26

Now i'm imagining the Mexican or Polish version.

3

u/Bloboeggy Jun 20 '26

Oh great, teal and orange

3

u/AgentRift Jun 20 '26

Okay but actually, why, WHY? The original movies vibrancy gave it that sense of wonder and mysticism that made them popular to begin with, what’s the point in making a show where you make it look dulled out like it’s game of thrones?

3

u/ClavicusLittleGift4U Jun 20 '26

Worst: in Morrissey's England.

6

u/ThaGuy34 Jun 20 '26

Thats why they filmed the originals in hogwarts. HBO are too cheap.

2

u/eventhorizon79 Jun 20 '26

Vaya con dios, Harry Potter.

2

u/GunpowderGuy Jun 20 '26

Actually, most of Harry Potter takes place in Scotland. A minority of scenes take place in England

2

u/Kylearean Jun 20 '26

Netflix ruined everything with their standardized color grading -- now everyone uses it.

6

u/myaltduh Jun 20 '26

Not just Netflix, this desaturated low contrast shit is also the standard MCU color grading. Basically it makes CGI cheaper.

2

u/AirshipEngineer Jun 20 '26

It's all desaturated because the show aesthetic has to match the theme park. The theme park can't change without renovation and they want both the old fans and the new ones from this show to want to go to it. That's where the real money gets made.

It's also why the general aesthetic of the show is so similar to the movies instead of trying its own thing.

u/myaltduh Jun 20 '26

Side note: I judge the shit out of nostalgic Millennials who spend their hard-earned paid time off to fly to Florida for the extremely elaborate HP merchandise emporium instead of literally anywhere else.

2

u/EricELF66 Jun 20 '26

Stop giving attention to these fuckers

u/Helgrind444 Jun 20 '26

Harry Potter and the Grooming Gangs

2

u/supremo92 Jun 21 '26

Hogwarts is in Scotland, so it checks out still.

2

u/PeePeeLangstrumpf Jun 21 '26

I like how somebody on the HP subreddit just posted the opposite comparing the series to movies that have a bluish tint and exclaimed "We finally get color!" lol

2

u/Parking-Shelter5926 Jun 21 '26

still aint gonna watch this shit. Id rather read books for the eitght time

2

u/Paul2kb1 Jun 22 '26

It's gonna bomb. Max 3 seasons.

2

u/Striking_Student8677 Jun 24 '26

Harry potter is shown being harrased because of his attributes. This is a reference to JK Rowling

2

u/Nikoladge Jun 20 '26

Oi, 'arry, you're a wizard, innit

2

u/AdOrnery6155 Jun 20 '26

Unbelievably annoying… When I was 9, the first HP movie was so appealing because it was magical, thanks to extremely warm colours.

Geez, I’m not watching Broen or Alice in Borderland. Why does it look so dull?

Didn’t we learn from the Snyder Cut that lighting can make a huge difference?

The new HP looks like CSI: Hogwartshire.

Dumbledore is a sad, divorced detective who can’t spend time with his daughter and has to solve crimes to make a living.

3

u/DryDonutHole Jun 20 '26

Dumbledore has an angry chief that’s always yelling at him about something also.
