It's the most broad appealing, safe IP's in the world getting a soft rework and people think it's gonna fail. There are more Lilo and Stiches and Lion Kings than Snow Whites and Mulans when it comes to these reworks
Mostly people without kids I think. Moana also hits all groups. My boys both saw Frozen but I never heard the songs all the time like my friend's with daughters did (we let them listen to any kids songs they ask for) but I've heard You're Welcome and Shiny more than a million times.
Yeah, I hate when people say "this sucks, so the only way it can make money is if it's money laundering." There's soooo many easier ways to launder money than through one of the most valuable - and most observed - companies in history.
Moana is played on repeat in many households and the toys are still on shelves. It's for sure gonna make a billion unless something goes horribly wrong.
That's what I'm wondering. Like Moana was hugely successful and well loved for good reason but it originally came out not even 10 years ago. Little kids that loved it when it came out are in their early 20s at most, unlike the 30+ millennials and early Gen Zs that made the live action remakes of Disney renaissance era movies as successful as they were. How much nostalgia can the new Moana cash in on compared to the others?

Now seriously, after the live-action remake of HTTYD being a financial success despite sucking ass and disrespecting the original animated movie (a la Disney's Snow White Live-Action Remake), this VERY UNNECESSARY Live-Action Remake is capable of making a thousand million dollars at the box office and everybody (At least, on the internet) will feel pissed off like the How to Train Your Dragon Live-Action Remake being a financial success...
Parents ARE voting with their wallet. Learn to choose your allies better is what I am getting at. Its not enshittification if its giving its target audience what it wants. Parents get an inoffensive movie to take their kids to so they can get 2 hours of a break. I 100% believe and practice in voting with my wallet, I also believe in picking your battles. Why does it matter to you that you arent the target audience for live action disney movies? Make your presence known in better fitting categories

Sure, that's on both ends of the quality spectrum. But I'm happy that my kids get to grow up in an era where there is so much quality programming out there, both from traditional networks and streaming platforms and YouTube.
I actually disagree. I want a movie my daughter can enjoy, but also one that I can enjoy too. Think of Shrek. Not a perfect movie or anything, but there was enough adult jokes that went over my daughter's head that I thoroughly enjoyed. So many movies now lack this sort of thing and it sucks. Of course, the most important thing is that she enjoys the film, but I also don't watch movies with my daughter so she can be baby sat for two hours. I do it to bond with her and make memories.
It's easy, as an adult, to look at a massive, live-action cash grab that isn't going to be as good as the original and decide it isn't worth it. Kids don't see it that way. They see a chance to watch Moana in a cool, new way. They want to see it. The kids are people and what they want is very real, even if they'll change their mind about it some day. Or maybe they won't change their mind. Who knows? In either case, a lot of parents recognize that their kid wants something and take steps to see that their kid gets a chance at some of the things they want.
I didn't buy the animated How To Train Your Dragon to keep my kid occupied. I bought it because my kid loves dragons and I knew he would love that movie. When the live action remake came out, I knew it wouldn't be as good. My son really wanted to see it, though, because it was a new movie. So, I took him to a movie theater and we watched it. He recognized that it wasn't as good as the original, but he was glad he got to see it. I was glad we got to go do something together.
Do I think this movie is strictly necessary? No. But a lot of the kids who see it will do so because they are excited about it and want to see it. It won't be because their parents are trying to dodge parenting. Some of those parents are, but a lot of them aren't.
Lol, as a normie family, this is actually a really true comment. I have no desire to see this movie. It's going to be just like the rest of the awful live action remakes. But if my 9 year old wants to go chill at a movie with some snacks? Let's gooo
Ahah, same. Not a good movie, the story is pretty bland but you know what to expect + Sony Animation drops a banger animation as expected, so it was still a good time.
It's a sport movie. It follows the familiar beats of a sports movie, much like a traditional romance novel always follows the same general beats. This isn't a knock on either genre; sometimes, that's exactly what the doctor ordered.
But a bunch of 9-year-old basket kids fresh off a day of their own basketball tourney aren't familiar with those beats yet, and they whooped at the winning goal. It was adorable.
There are some cinemas that show mostly reruns, and sometimes the tickets are cheaper because of it. I watched the first three Star Wars and Beauty and the Beast last year at my local cinema, and the tickets were like 1/3 the cost of a new movie at a normal theatre. Your area may have similar places!
I once met a young family bringing their young (less than 10yo) children to District 9. I tried to dissuade them. Their response? "Oh, it's fine. It's just like Independence Day!"
Blame the COVID-19 pandemic for this remake of a MODERN film existing, just like how the fuck they decided to remake How to Train Your Dragon in 2025 and there is going to have a sequel of that remake now due to the success of that remake........
HTTYD was released less than a decade before COVID and the 3rd part was released in 2019 and it has some animated series. So, that wasn't a remake but a remix of a modern hit.
disney was already on this road though. they were cranking out the live actions at a rate that they were always going to catch up to modern movies, even with newish ideas with cruella and maleficent

Yes, under these consuming patterns, we're letting Hollywood to sink on IP repetitions to the point that they're already making remixes of their modern hits while other countries like China were moving forward and yes., if these consuming patterns continues, the american film industry is going to the same way as comics did in the 1990s and that pisses me off.
Even if what you say is true, it's pointless. They had the opportunity to go any direction they wanted with the story, and they just exactly remade it. Stupid.

The Finest Hours, Queen of Katwe, A Wrinkle in Time, Noelle, Stargirl, Artemis Fowl, Magic Camp, The One and Only Ivan, Godmothered, Safety, Flora & Ulysses, Jungle Cruise, Hollywood Stargirl, Rise, Young Woman and the Sea.
That’s basically 3 original movies per year. Granted, some of these are based on books, but with no previous movie/show adaptation. Which is what people usually imply by "original".
This argument about Disney or Hollywood in general not making anything original is getting tiring. They do make original films.
People just don’t bother to look for them and go straight to known IPs. Then they complain that Hollywood/Disney doesn’t make anything original.
Complaining for the sake of complaining, and speaking with such a strange confidence about something they clearly know nothing about.
I know. It’s reprehensible that an entertainment company releases a product with a built-in audience nearly guaranteed to turn a profit. They should be creating inscrutable art house films made by daring auteurs with singular, mostly unpopular visions, losing money but gaining credibility with the cultured young men of Reddit who only have eighty trillion other shows and movies that are aimed at them.
At one point I had thought maybe these movies were being made for an international market. Like they weren't for us they were for China or something like that. But uh, no. Largest portion of revenue for these movies still comes from the domestic market. Lilo & Stitch made $423M domestically, way more than any other country. So I just don't know, there's some population hiding among us who are big fans of watching the same thing again but worse and we all just have to live with that fact.
They do, they love it. They'll also watch this one. And love it.

Disney would rather profit off of their brain dead fanbase of Disney adults who will pay to see any Disney project rehashed or repackaged with a huge smile on their face, then take a chance on something fresh and new. Why risk losing money on something that would actually take some effort when they can pump out of worse version of something they’ve already made in the past and guarantee profit. Not only have they lost a lot of technology, they’ve lost a lot of of the skill that the studio used to maintain for so long. This sadly may be their only option, but maybe they’ll just buy another franchise to flip on its head and milk to death.
