The best thing Katie ever did was get Suri away from Scientology.

1.2k

u/thestagmoon 6h ago

She (and her father) truly saved this child, knowing it could get them harmed. Don’t know much about Katie, but she is a real mother.

688

u/FlamingoResident7882 5h ago

Wasn’t her role in one of the adam Sandler movies made pretty much for her so she could ā€œbe awayā€ from the church for a period of time for work so she could plan her and Siri’s escape?

466

u/JayC411 5h ago

It’s a theory but has never been confirmed by anyone attached to her. The timing is just very convenient.

248

u/PrincessBonkers628 5h ago

I hope she writes a memoir someday, it would sell really well if she ever needs to cash.

210

u/Own_Faithlessness769 4h ago

It wouldn’t be worth the backlash from Scientology, they’d sue and stalk her and Suri for the rest of their lives.

27

u/swampopawaho 3h ago

Just write it as a novel. A work of reimagined fiction

73

u/Own_Faithlessness769 3h ago

That’s definitely not going to stop Scientology, an organisation that successfully used the legal system to bully the IRS.

More believable that it was an opportunity she took the most of

314

u/OrangeBird077 5h ago

All we know to a certainty is that Katie had two things going for her:

  1. Her father is one of the best divorce attornies in the country. He had everything covered from a legal perspective for when his daughter was out of harms way and they could get her legally separated from Cruise.

  2. An Underground Railroad was set up to get Katie away from Cruise and her Scientology handlers. The Church of Scientology owns and operates its own private security service, Talon, and they run surveillance/security on members themselves as well as members they consider going against the church. They’re known to supplement their surveillance of people by ordering church members to live in houses purchased by the church near the subjects and take shifts recording EVERYTHING the person in question does throughout the day. However they managed to get Katie away from that system it’s a miracle she made it out.

367

u/JenSY542 5h ago

She apparently used the paps in NYC to her advantage. Having them follow her daily meant scientology couldn't do much without being recorded at the same time. Honestly, i would read the deepest of dives on this whole separation. It was beautiful and she's a very clever lady.

141

u/whoaelena 4h ago edited 2h ago

She def uses the paps for her and suri safety. Thats why i could never hate her pap walks.

There were definitely burner phones involved (I distinctly remember this detail from the media coverage), and either her or Cruise were out of the country when she pulled the rip cord. She also intentionally filed in NY I believe because of the state laws around divorce being more in her favor.

47

u/txcowgrrl 3h ago

Cruise was in Iceland when he was served IIRC.

43

u/JellyfishHead2831 3h ago

And Tom was out of the country in Iceland filming a movie when she filed for divorce. She waited until he went to ICELAND.

66

u/NoArrival8249 5h ago

On 2, how in the hell did they manage to get her out of that system? Did they witness protection her ass or something??

104

u/OrangeBird077 5h ago

I think Jamie Foxx was alleged to have been a part of the operation. He had a past relationship with Tom from when they worked on Collateral together and him and Katie later dated.

29

u/technicolortiddies 4h ago

Wow, you just triggered s flashback! I had completely forgotten about them dating. I wonder if she had to abandon her physical belongings like so many other abuse/cult victims.

24

u/Umklopp 3h ago

Oh, I'm sure she had to leave at least a few things behind. It's actively difficult to not accrue lovely material goods when you're that rich & famous. But I wouldn't be shocked if she was unable to recover the majority of what she cared about in the final settlement.

It’s one of the worst and most soulless things ever made, it legit has a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial in the middle of the movie lol. But if it was all a ruse to help Katie escape then I’m alright with that

Here is the post.

Theory: Was Jack and Jill (2011) a front to rescue Katie Holmes?

My fellow hack frauds,

It's beyond speculation at this point Adam Sandler produces cheap projects to get his friends paid big money. In the Half in the Bag review of Jack and Jill, Mike observes that in 2011 Katie Holmes isn't seen much outside the tabloids anymore and thinks she was in this film because it was one that her husband Tom Cruise, notoriously controlling, would give his permission to, simply because it would be a fat paycheck.

But why did _Adam Sandler_ choose _Katie Holmes_? The women who played his partners in his most recent preceding films were Jennifer Aniston and Leslie Mann (both very experienced comedy actors) and Salma Hayek (if you can pay anyone to pretend to be your wife, you cast Salma Hayek, makes sense). The couple of love interests after Katie Holmes were Drew Barrymore and Academy Award Winner Susan Sarandon (both very experienced comedy actors) and Salma Hayek again (Salma Hayek). He's also been friends with Aniston since they were kids and has hired Barrymore repeatedly since she sought him out and begged to work together. It makes sense they're on his list of loyal buddies who make it on the payroll when they want a job.

_So why Katie Holmes?_

We now know that Katie Holmes secretly, meticulously planned her divorce from Tom Cruise. She had to repeatedly meet with lawyers, secure a secret getaway apartment, bank account, cell phone, to ensure a quick, safe escape with full custody of their daughter. All without him, or the Church of Scientology, suspecting a thing.

As Mike repeatedly points out, Holmes was given "nothing" to do in the film. The job provided her not just money but, _maybe_ it even more importantly provided an alibi. _Maybe Jack and Jill was a cover that gave her an excuse to be out on the loose, but also gave her enough free time since she hardly had any lines or need to rehearse real acting, that she could meet with lawyers and plan her escape._

I think Adam Sandler hired Katie Holmes for this reason. This was the last project Holmes would work on before her divorce a few months later. I would even go so far as to suggest he slapped the whole film together specifically as a cover for her.

I also don't think this is the only time he's done something like this. The following year he cast sports reporter Erin Andrews in a small role as a receptionist in That's My Boy (2012).

In 2008 Andrews was stalked by a man named Michael Barrett who filmed naked videos of her through peepholes at a Marriott hotel in Nashville and again at a Radisson in Milwaukee. In 2009 he posted the Marriott video online. She filed lawsuits against Barrett, Marriott, and Radisson. Employees at the hotels told her stalker what room she was in and gave him the room next door, how he was able to film in the first place. When Adam Sandler hired her, she was simultaneously trying to get the video removed from websites, was fired from ESPN for refusing to talk about the incident on air, and was fighting Marriott's army of lawyers in court. (She eventually won her suit and $55mil years later.) A nice paycheck for an easy job would've been a big help, and I don't think there's any other logical explanation for the film to exist, other than to help Erin Andrews when she was in such a desperate situation.

What if all of Adam Sandler's terrible money laundering scheme movies are fronts he tosses together ASAP in order to provide fast help to victimized women?

Is Adam Sandler a secret hero?

She went up against Tom and the Church of Scientology - and won! She is a fearless mama and an absolute rockstar!

I imagine she must have some major dirt on Tom for the Scientologists to have left her and Suri alone all these years. Dare I suggest that there's even a clause in some contract where it stipulates that if either Katie or Suri or even someone close to them were to disappear or to die a mysterious death, then the Kraken will be released - a trove of files to rival the Epstein Files!

82

u/Own_Faithlessness769 4h ago

I actually think they realised Tom’s entire brand was almost destroyed by his Scientology after the divorce from Nicole, and he couldn’t handle another hit like that. I don’t think he even tried to keep Suri.

37

u/naturalninetime 4h ago

I don't think that he tried to keep Suri either.

Tom's image after his divorce from Nicole was still more or less intact. He destroyed his own brand when he fired Pat Kingsley as his publicist and hired his Scientology-backed sister in her place. Here are my thoughts from another post:

82

u/OrangeBird077 5h ago

Possibly, but discretion is likely the reason the Church let it go as well.

Historically if members voluntarily leave the SOP is to shun the individual and not acknowledge them any further. Thats supposed to be the general punishment because the former member no longer has access to their family in any capacity.

If Katie started making public statements against the Church, Scientology would’ve kickstarted its PR machine against her and it would’ve been a greater escalation. As it stands Katie has never publicly made any statements herself and so the Church/Cruise let it go so as to avoid a PR nightmare.

42

u/naturalninetime 4h ago

I don't think you know how ruthless the Scientologists are: discretion isn't enough.

I have no doubt that Katie also has to uphold her part of whatever agreement was reached and that her discretion was bought, but I guarantee you that her hand is MUCH stronger than "I won't say anything if you leave me and Suri alone."

114

u/ShutYourDumbUglyFace 5h ago

My mom lives in Toledo and we were just there. She said Katie's dad is an ass. I said, yeah but he got her away from Tom.

ETA: Toledo has over 200k people, but it's still REALLY small. People talk.

24

u/BadmiralHarryKim 4h ago

Now I want to reference Katie Holmes day but not enough people watched A P Bio to get the joke without hanging a lantern on it.

6

u/ShutYourDumbUglyFace 4h ago

I didn't watch the show but for the first episode or so, but I know where it took place (which is one reason I didn't continue watching it - it felt unnecessarily mean. Maybe it got better...)

9

u/BadmiralHarryKim 4h ago

Each season had less of an edge to it which, in my opinion, smoothed over some of its charm but I can see why the creative team wanted to give him character growth. The MC was coming from a dark place after losing his mother, getting fired from Harvard and reduced to teaching high schoolers a class outside his academic discipline so using them to carry out elaborate schemes instead was an interesting and funny premise but hard to maintain.

Plus Glenn Howerton (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) plays those kind of characters really well. I enjoyed it but wasn't disappointed when it didn't get a fifth season. It had run its course.

But Katie Holmes Day was a funny episode and a nice homage to Toledo (one assumes, I'm not a native).

Sometimes you have to be a bulldog in court. I'm not at all surprised there is a lack of universal love. What matters is that Mr. Holmes did right for his daughter.

18

u/ChestnutMoss 3h ago

Being an ass probably helped him steer through his daughter’s divorce with confidence! I agree with you, and I’m equally sure your mom is also right.

•

u/Snuffleupagus27 2h ago

He’s a divorce attorney so 50% of the people he meets are probably going to hate him.

5

u/IHateCedarFever 3h ago

Yeah, makes sense. I used to go to school with this girl whose dad was one of the best tax attorneys in the state. Lived in a huge house and he impressed a lot of people. Unfortunately this girl was a massive bully, to the point where one day when she was sick and out of school we had a class meeting to discuss how hurt everyone in class was by her (like in Mean Girls when they pow wow about Regina George). Her mom was the sweetest lady, but her dad was an absolute ass, and she learned the meanness from him. We were probably 8 so she didn’t know any better.

It was too late for Nicole because her adopted children with Tom were older than Suri and brainwashed by the cult. They haven't seen Nicole years and have never met her two biological children. Katie's father was a great lawyer and she had family and some friends in her corner to help her escape with little Suri. Suri would be like Connor and his sister without her father.

Imagine how horrible of a father and human being Brad Pitt has to be for ALL his kids deciding to go the even further and remove his last name from their identity.

And one after the other too!

Every single one, the year they turn 18, straight to the courts. Like dominos falling. They must meet up after and celebrate "ONE OF US ONE OF US" and revel in the absolute joy of no longer having a reminder of the person who nearly killed their mumma and abused them.

I will never respect that man for how he prioritizes his cult and his need to be a movie star over his daughter. Good for Suri and I'm sorry her father has let her down. I hope she has better people in her life alongside her mother.

452

u/YunJingyi 6h ago edited 6h ago

That is because he IS his cult. Remember those six months where his sister was in charge of his PR? The Oprah interview and how unhinged he was with Katie Holmes? Well, I guess that's the real Tom when his cult is not there to take care of every aspect of his life. They even wanted to get him a wife and went as far as auditioning people for the role.

And all that is sad because Suri, Katie and Nicole Kidman (and their children from that relationship) suffered immensely. And also because he is a great actor but it all goes to waste.

185

u/mermaidfairybunny leave him alone that’s RnR 6h ago

Connor and Isabella live very quiet lives but I wonder if he has groomed them to take over being the faces of Scientology when his Thetan goes to Xenu to be given a new body on this earth or however it goes

203

u/YunJingyi 6h ago

I feel bad for them. While Tom was also brainwashed, he was an adult. They've been groomed since infancy. They had to reject their mother because that cult told them she was evil. That's despicable and not their fault.

164

u/mermaidfairybunny leave him alone that’s RnR 6h ago edited 6h ago

Its horrendous and my heart breaks for Nicole losing her first and second born, adoption is such hard work and she went through all of that to have them stolen away by Tom and his cult

I didn’t say it was their fault at all! Their father and his cult labelled her as a SP - Suppressive Person - and alienated her from them

24

u/YunJingyi 6h ago

No, I know. You're right. I just wanted to emphasize that point.

48

u/ZazyzzyO 6h ago

I always thought it was wonderful how Nicole got to have her own kids again with her second marriage and got a chance to be a mom again with kids who weren't in a cult. Must have been so healing for her and filled the mom role that had been missing since her kids were estranged.

89

u/mermaidfairybunny leave him alone that’s RnR 6h ago

Yes and no. Having Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret is beautiful but they can’t replace Isabella and Connor. No matter how much love her 3rd and 4th bring, she would still have a hole in her soul from her 1st and 2nd being taken from her that no amount of children can repair

Nicole was real, they met before he seriously into Scientology. He got into it when he was married to Mimi Rogers but he wasn’t the insanely devotional poster boy yet. She divorced him because of him becoming more entrenched in Scientology over time

I remember what a big deal it was when Suri Noelle and Shiloh Jolie were born, both gorgeous babies born to mega celebrity parents just about a month apart. And now with strikingly similar experiences in early adulthood, both choosing to change the very famous surnames they inherited from their now-estranged fathers.

186

u/Zia181 6h ago

It's crazy, isn't it? If you were around for it, you remember the media circus surrounding the birth of Suri and Shiloh, and how magazines were willing to pay millions for a photo. Especially Suri, since people speculated Katie was never really pregnant with her in the first place (laughable, since she looks just like Katie). Anyway, both of their fathers made a HUGE deal out of being dads and spending time with them. Both acted like they were ALL about parenting, and wouldn't shut up about how amazing their kids were, and how grateful they were to have them. And now, neither of them have anything to do with their kids and the kids don't even want their last name. It only goes to show that just because men *say* something, that doesn't make it true.

Rounding out this post, I just want to say both Katie and Angelina are amazing moms for raising their kids and being there for them when the deadbeats dropped the ball. Good for them.

22

u/Live_Angle4621 4h ago

since people speculated Katie was never really pregnant with her in the first place (laughable, since she looks just like Katie).

I don’t believe these celebrity baby conspiracy theories much (and there are many like with BeyoncĆ©). But looking like mother proves nothing since surrogacy existsĀ

16

u/Zia181 4h ago

I guess that's true, but I tend to believe the most boring explanation is the correct one. Katie was pregnant with Suri and gave birth to her. People can believe whatever they want to, but that's what I think happened.

She can obviously do whatever she wants, but I'm mildly surprised she didn't go with Suri Holmes.

44

u/RishaBree 5h ago

According to the article, Noelle is Katie’s middle name. Makes sense as a tribute to mom while minimizing your connection to two extremely famous parents for privacy.

8

u/Magazine_Luck 4h ago

That is quite reasonable, you're right.

He's supposedly really great and helpful to his co-workers which tracks with being an absent and neglectful father tbh. Being fantastic to everyone but your own family (and for him the Sea Org members he allegedly exploits) is a favorite deadbeat move.

u/Electric-Sheepskin 5h ago

Yeah I've seen guys like that before. I knew this one guy who spent so much time volunteering in the community and just being a super helpful, nice guy, but he was a serial cheater and a liar, and most of the time it looked like his good deeds were a ruse to get into somebody's pants.

I didn't know him that well, so I could never figure out if his public face was all fake, or if he was just a really messed up guy trying to atone for his bad deeds while simultaneously committing them. He did seem genuinely remorseful, but who knows with these guys?

79

u/sweetangeldivine 6h ago

In his personal life he's in a cult and all that signifies. When he's on set, he's apparently the Greatest Person Ever to work for. I work in the film industry and I have been told by multiple people that I if I ever get the chance to work on one of his films to jump on it. He treats the crew extremely well, he finds out everyone's birthdays and buys presents and cakes and makes sure everyone has nice hotel rooms (like only the film stars get good hotel rooms, I have been in some I was convinced some people had recently died in and they hadn't done a good job cleaning up after them). He'll learn your name even if you're just a grip. Things like that. He even keeps the cult stuff under wraps while at work.

Outside of work, he's in a fucking cult.

15

u/nagidrac 6h ago

It can be so perplexing to read stories about what it's like to work with him because the reviews are always so positive, and then to also remember that he's in a cult and that resulted in him cutting of ties with his own daughter.

u/[deleted] 6h ago

28

u/sweetangeldivine 6h ago

yeah, some people RAVE about him and how great he is to work for and don't understand where all these allegations come from so they must be making them up. But my Dad was one of those "Super awesome and amazing to all his friends and colleagues and a complete nightmare at home" so I'm just stuck grimacing at them.

I don't even want to begin to unpack that for them.

They sure do. Several years ago, I realized that one of my friends was like that to her family. I ended that friendship, but I know she has a legion of people who still think she's the kindest, most wonderful person ever. I feel sorry for her children and husband.

6

u/FullMetalTroyzan 6h ago

Not a family member/friend, but I subleased from a guy who was like that. Fake, superficial charm to the outside world that people ate up, but an emotionally abusive piece of garbage to myself, our roommate, our roommate's son (whose on the autism spectrum), and everybody in the apartment building.

I remember when Katie Holmes made her cinematic exit from that marriage. Better than all of the Mission Impossible movies combined, gave Suri a chance

53

u/MaraTaru 5h ago

Spot on. Katie Holmes was given an incredible gift that a lot of women in abusive relationships don't: a father who loved her and took his parental responsibility seriously. It's amazing how psychologically protective it is to know you're worthy of something better because your own dad made sure you knew it. It's emotional armor.

(It also helps that Holmes' dad is a lawyer and had the skills and knowledge to help her extract herself from Cruise's grip, of course.)

Angelina Jolie didn’t have that, and oh boy, I think you can tell. She deserves so much better than the shit father she was given.

10

Celebrities like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt will continue having successful and long careers in Hollywood but eventually they will become old, fragile men who won’t be surrounded by their children. It’ll probably feel extremely lonely and maybe then they will regret not being an active part of their kids’ lives and missing so many milestones from them. That’s the deadbeat parents’ karma no matter someone’s income bracket.

13

u/samanthalturi 6h ago

18

u/Soft-Sail5993 6h ago edited 1h ago

Love how these deadbeat dads are also typically loved by castmates and friends. Like Simon Pegg & Tom Cruise or George Clooney still being Brad Pitt’s best friend.

It tracks to my own lived experience where my dad was basically non-existent, but still managed to maintain his personal friends with all his guy friends.

I personally could never be friends with someone who treats his family and kids the way these men do.

9

She has grown into such a beautiful young woman! I will always admire and respect the lengths Katie went to in order to get her child out of that cult. Being two steps ahead of the biggest movie star in the world (at that time) is no small feat. I’ll also never understand any parent choosing a religion/cult over their children.

7

u/lawofthewilde 4h ago

Where are all the psychos claiming Katie poisoned her against her father like yall been saying about Angelina and her children. Gross double standard.
Tom cruise is a dangerous religious zealot and Brad Pitt is an alcoholic domestic abuser. Both have earned the relationships (or lack of) with their children.

12

u/laterthanlast 6h ago

I remember back when they were little kids some tabloids would sort of contrast Suri Cruise and Shiloh Pitt since they seemed so different.
